All about the Sony Xperia E5 phone. Sony Xperia E5 - an inexpensive but worthy device from Japan

The Japanese company Sony has not been famous for its affordable devices in recent years. Things aren't going well for the corporation's mobile division, so to keep it afloat, the Japanese put a hefty markup on their phones. However, this is not Apple, and compared to its 2016 counterparts, the Sony Xperia E5 F3311, released in May, looks affordable. Its price starts from 190 US dollars.

The device has very budget-friendly characteristics, as at first glance, but it also has positive aspects. How does a smartphone differ from its twice cheaper Chinese counterparts, are there any clear advantages over them, and is it worth buying? Will help determine the review.

The characteristics of the Xperia E5 F3311 are not surprising. A Chinese chipset, a standard screen - all this is also available in “nonames” for 80-100 dollars. At first glance, the smartphone does not live up to its inflated price tag.

Design, case materials, dimensions and weight

The appearance of the Xperia E5 F3311 can be added to the list of advantages. Although it does not have metal body parts, it looks good. Externally, the smartphone is somewhat reminiscent of the flagship Z5 series, and the name echoes it. The dimensions of the smartphone are 14.4x6.9 cm, thickness is 8.2 mm, and the device weighs 147 grams. Typical indicators for a five-inch device, if not for one “but”: there are no buttons under the screen. Taking this fact into account, the “chin” looks unreasonably wide.

The design of the rear panel (non-removable) is laconic. It is flat, slightly rounded at the edges, and in the middle there is a not very noticeable manufacturer’s logo. Material: plastic, gray or white. In the very corner there is a camera with a single diode flash (like an iPhone).

There is nothing on the front panel below (standard 3 control buttons are on the display). At the top there is a speaker slot, a camera and a window for light and proximity sensors. The frames around the screen are wide (3-4 millimeters).

The side ribs are designed non-standardly, as for Sony, but typical for other brands. On the right is the power/lock button, above it is the sound control rocker. At the top left is a slot for MicroSD and NanoSIM cards. At the top end there is a 3.5 mm headset jack and a second microphone. On the bottom there is a speaker and a MicroUSB port.

CPU

Sony has previously practiced installing chipsets from Taiwan, so the presence of a MediaTek processor is not surprising. It’s a little disappointing that this is a quad-core MT6735 with a frequency of 1.3 GHz. It is a cheaper competitor to the American Snapdragon 410, and the Chinese even put it in handsets for 80 USD. The processor is not a slowdown at all - it renders the interface smoothly, and even copes well with more complex tasks, but compared to more advanced models it looks modest.

The Mali T720 graphics processor is responsible for 3D processing. It is quite capable of handling modern toys, but high graphics settings can only be a dream. The smartphone is clearly not made for gamers. In AnTuTu 6, the smartphone scores about 27 thousand points.

Memory

The amount of RAM on the Xperia E5 F3311 looks decent for a budget employee. But for 2 hundred “green” 1.5 GB LPDDR3 may not seem enough. But what can you do: the Japanese need to liquidate 512 MB worth of chips from warehouses, and 1.5 GB is better than 1. At the start, the system consumes around 800 MB, 600-700 free. This is enough to ensure normal multitasking, programs do not crash out of the blue.

The built-in storage has a capacity of 16 GB, up to 10 are available to the user. There is a slot for a memory card, it is separate. MicroSD modules up to 256 GB are supported. Unfortunately, there is no USB OTG.

Battery

Sometimes Sony sins by installing small-capacity batteries in the hope that Stamina (proprietary energy saving mode) will save the day. But the Sony Xperia E5 F3311 avoided this problem; its battery has a capacity of 2700 mAh. The only pity is that it is not removable. Because of this, the question arises of how, in case of wear, replacement can be carried out without tearing apart the monolithic plastic body.

The battery life of the smartphone is quite typical and not far from the statistical average. The battery will last up to 5 hours in games, about 7 hours – playing from YouTube, up to 10-11 – watching movies from the memory. In standby mode, you can count on two days, with gentle use. The charger is 1 A, with it charging lasts up to 3 hours.

Cameras

The main camera of the Xperia E5 F3311 has a 13 MP matrix, supports autofocus, and is equipped with a single flash. The lens aperture is f/2, the matrix size is 1/3", pixels are 1.12 microns. Everything is standard and unremarkable. Taking photos during the day allows you to get acceptable quality, but in the evening there are problems with this. The quality of the images, in general, is at the level some Xiaomi Mi4c, which is acceptable for this price category, but not ideal.

The front camera is 5 MP, with an f/2.4 aperture, you shouldn’t expect a miracle from it. It's great for video conferencing, but you can only take a good selfie during the day. In the evening there is a lot of noise and artifacts, which is affected by a slightly degraded aperture ratio.

Video recording is carried out in 1080p, with 30 FPS. Video recording at low level. Autofocus works every other time. The dynamic range of the video is narrow, there are white spots instead of the sky, and you can’t see anything in the shadows.

Display

There are usually no complaints about Sony screens (they use high-quality IPS JDI matrices), the Xperia E5 F3311 was no exception. The five-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels is easy to read in the sun and at an angle, the brightness is evenly distributed, and the color rendition is natural. Some may find the HD resolution low, but at 5" a pixel density of 293 PPI is quite enough.

The touchscreen is made of tempered glass (the manufacturer does not specify whether it is Gorilla or Asahi) and supports up to 4 touches. Oleophobic coating is available, its quality is quite good (better than that of the Meizu M2 Mini).

Connection

In the post-Soviet region, a version of the Sony Xperia E5 F3311 for 1 SIM card is available for sale, and this review is dedicated to it. There is also a model for 2 cards, but it is quite difficult to find it on sale. GSM, HSPA and LTE networks are supported, there are no problems with Russian operators.

Also on board are Wi-Fi operating in 2.4 and 5 GHz networks, and Bluetooth 4.1. The navigator supports GPS satellites. I'm glad that there is an NFC module on board, which is not bad for a relatively inexpensive smartphone.

operating system

The Xperia E5 F3311 runs on Android 6.1 OS. There is a proprietary Sony graphical interface, but this is just a shell, and not a big mod (like MIUI or FlymeOS for the Chinese). Overall, the system is very close to stock Marshmallow. The OS runs smoothly, without any brakes. For slowdowns in work to appear, you need to either load the memory with programs, or open a page overloaded with various elements.

Sound

The smartphone does not have a dedicated DAC, so you shouldn't expect fantastic quality from the sound. You can listen to music on the speaker, but you shouldn't expect a wide frequency range. In the headphones, the sound is typical of Sony (known as a "music" company). It is slightly better than the Chinese ones for $100-150, but weaker and poorer than models with a separate sound chip. There is an FM radio on board.

Pros and cons of Sony Xperia E5 F3311

  • successful design;
  • normal battery;
  • decent (for the price category) sound;
  • good screen.
  • understated (for a price of $200) characteristics.

Who is a smartphone suitable for?

The smartphone will appeal to fans of inexpensive Japanese devices, as it is the most affordable recent Sony device. It is designed for those for whom technical characteristics are not very important, the main thing is that everything works stably. The smartphone copes with modern tasks, but such users don’t need anything more from it.

Our review of the Sony Xperia E5 F3311

The review showed that the Sony Xperia E5 F3311 is a good smartphone, although not without its sins. It has a passable camera for its price, a good screen and a good design. The good news is that there is support for memory cards of almost any size (512 GB chips are not being produced yet, but they should also work). The only thing that upset me was the fact that the price is a little steep. Still, almost $200 is a bit too much for a device with a cheap Chinese processor and only 1.5 GB of RAM.

Used for 3 days. I was choosing between xperia XA and E5. The only choice was Sony, to replace the old xperia SP. There is not much difference between the XA and E5, only the processor. In general, I am very pleased with the purchase. Performance is excellent, it works quickly, the screen responds clearly. They really joked about the SONY battery; it could have been more powerful for such a model. I don't know if I took XA with 8 cores. There is the same 2300 battery, but 4 cores, 1.3 percent. In general, the battery lasts for a day or more with average use. In the morning with a full charge, in the evening 35-40 percent. Both calls and internet. In general, like all recent Sony devices, the battery is weak, but tolerable, especially if you know how to use it. The camera is a huge minus. I even had a camera on SP that was much smarter and clearer. The front is good. As for the Sound, the sound is high-quality, surround. I was shocked when I heard it. Usually the phone starts screaming and everything wheezes, etc. And here the sound is very high quality, but unfortunately quiet. Communication and microphone are excellent. And compared to early SONY models, there are no heaps of unnecessary factory programs. The case does not seem to creak, everything is clear and strong. In general, I am satisfied and confidently recommend it. Definitely worth the money.

Greetings, dear readers. Today we will talk about the spectacular relatively new smartphone Sony Xperia E5.

The stylish body, instant Internet and good characteristics make its purchase a tempting offer. Let's figure out what the secret of this inexpensive model is and what else interesting it can attract our attention.

So, go ahead!

What will we see when we unpack the treasured box, which will certainly be neat and equipped with recognizable Sony symbols?

A modest but high-quality set: a smartphone, a power supply and a USB cable. Of course, all the necessary documentation will be here.

Characteristics

Operating system, five-inch HD screen with a resolution of 720x1280 pixel, RAM - 1.5 GB and total memory 16gb with support for a microSD card of maximum capacity - up to 200GB.

For comparison, here is the same device from the previous C4 e5303 line, which only supports a 128 GB card. The latter, by the way, is just as good with its camera, which is why it is called a selfie smartphone.

When we pick up the phone, we feel the high-quality, lightweight (about 150 grams) plastic case and can immediately evaluate the screen resolution.

Thanks to IPS technology and HD resolution, the gray city turns into a work of photo art without much effort on your part. This is Sonya’s grandiose ability to make a holiday out of an ordinary picture, and turn the play of light and shadows into a “photo canvas.”

In general, our budget phone's 13 MP camera with built-in autofocus and flash still allows you more than what you might initially think about.

The very “heart” and the very reason for the low performance is the quad-core MTK6735 chipset with a frequency of up to 1.3 GHz and the Mali-T720 graphics processor.

The high-speed Internet of the model is ensured by working in 4G Lte networks. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 work quickly here for data transfer. Additionally, there are also sensitive proximity and lighting sensors and FM radio.

This device today can be bought on average for 9-10 thousand rubles in various stores.

Design and Construction

The smartphone is budget, but in appearance and tactile sensations it is perceived as a worthy rival to many well-known more expensive models.

The assembly and design leave a good impression. And so, flattered by its excellent appearance, you pick up a fairly light smartphone weighing 147 grams and overall dimensions of 144 x 69 x 8.2 mm, which also allows it to be very neatly inserted into a proportionate case without looking bulky.

The characteristic curves and contours of the body are similar to other smartphones, but at the same time original in their form.

The oleophobic coating on the screen makes your fingerprints on the surface virtually invisible. Moreover, smartphones in both dark gray and white versions are equally non-staining.

On the top of the case there is a 3.5 mm jack, as well as a microphone hole. Above the screen is a speaker in the shape of an oblong strip, and there is also a front camera with a proximity sensor and adaptive brightness adjustment. A green indicator light above the screen flashes when charging.

Let's go to the bottom of the smartphone. Here, however, there is a completely traditional bottom location of the microUSB connector, but without a plug. The main speaker is also located at the bottom. On the left side there is a slot for a microSD memory card, and for a SIM or nanoSIM card here.

You just hook the SIM card tray, and in response to this simple action, two substrates come out at once. Even more ideal would be spring-loaded trays with a “firing” SIM card.

The volume control buttons fall under your right thumb, which is very convenient. True, not really, on the other hand, it is located here below the power button. Not very convenient, in my opinion.

It remains to look at the back of the smartphone. Here, of course, the camera lens and flash immediately catch your eye. And of course, one cannot ignore the Xperia branding, applied, albeit without engraving.

Display

The five-inch display is small enough for a modern smartphone, but still not critical. The screen is easy to adjust color balance and brightness. Its viewing angles are very good, and the oleophobic coating allows you to always look clean and tidy.

The screen resolution is only 1280 by 720 pixels, which is enough for a 5-inch size, but not enough for 2017.

Smartphone performance and features

As mentioned above, the device runs on the MTK6735 chipset.

Of course, in fairness, it is worth noting that there are also slight freezes when many applications are turned on. But in general, the high-quality modern firmware of the smartphone does not let you down; it is simple and easy to “fly” and does not cause any particular complaints.

Of course, you can’t really play games on such a budget processor, and you’ll have to choose which game to install and which one you shouldn’t.

Working hours

The manufacturer promises us 1.5 days of stable operation of the phone. But with heavy use of the device during the day, the battery is depleted by the evening and not surprisingly, the capacity is only 2300 mAh.

Stamina and UltraStamina help brighten up this characteristic a little. When turned on, the phone's energy consumption drops, and, of course, to the detriment of some other functions. But there are quite ordinary or special situations when a smartphone should be a device for making calls first and foremost.

Cameras and outputs

Focusing is not too fast, by the way, but in good lighting you get very decent photos. Sony is a master at this.

In general, the gadget can be called very worthy for a low price. At the same time, it is quite stylish. Whether you choose the classic black version of the smartphone or the attractive and sparkling white, it will look very presentable.

For the price asked by the manufacturer, which is about 9,000-10,000 rubles, you can buy the following smartphones on AliExpress:

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X– from 9500 rubles in version 3/32

Xiaomi Redmi 4X– from 7600 rubles in version 3/32

Asusu Zenfone 4 Max from 9200 rubles in version 3/32

Lenovo zuk Z1 with Snapdragon 801— from 7900 rubles in version 3/64

Bluboo S8– frameless from 9600 rubles

That. you understand that for this price it is quite possible to buy a smartphone with characteristics a cut above those of our test subject. The choice is yours.

Mobile equipment from Sony are expensive and interesting models. As a rule, buyers do not look into the budget segment of the brand, since there is nothing interesting there for the savvy consumer. Sony Xperia E5 is an exception from this list, since at a low price you can get a fairly good processor, a high-quality front camera and a nice design. A review of the Sony Xperia E5 will tell you why the device is interesting and why it is worth buying.

Today Sony Xperia E5 costs 10 thousand rubles. The market has long since passed the point where this was considered an average price, and any buyer understands that it is difficult to find an excellent device at such a price tag. E5 has a chance to prove that not everything is so sad on store shelves, and even a budget model can show good results. The characteristics of the Sony Xperia E5 are shown in the table.

Characteristics Xperia E5
Frame Plastic
Screen 5 inches, IPS, 1280*720
CPU MediaTek MTK6735
RAM/ROM 1.5/16 GB
Interfaces Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, LTE, GPS, NFC
13 + 5 MP
2300 mAh
Dimensions and weight 144*69*8.2 mm, 147 grams

The performance of the Sony Xperia E5 smartphone is not amazing, but it often happens that high numbers in the characteristics result in something incomprehensible in reality. Therefore, judging a device based solely on its parameters is not logical. You need to look at everything in fact.

Sony Xperia E5

Design

If you look at the Sony Xperia E5, it may seem like a plastic iPhone 5C. This comparison is caused by rounded corners. It's no secret that Sony really likes sharp corners, but here for some reason they were given soft outlines. Visually, the phone looks nice, and comparison with Apple technology is not copying, but simply a similar design. The phone not only looks good in appearance, but also fits comfortably in the hand. There is a good oleophobic layer, and the plastic is not slippery. The device is available in black and white, both look nice.

Advice! Still, it’s worth purchasing a case for the model, since any plastic case gets scratched and worn out over time.

In terms of the placement of elements, everything is quite typical.

The build quality is at the highest level, no one expected anything else from Sony.

Screen

The phone features a five-inch display using IPS technology. After the first turn on, the picture is a little yellow, but there is a balance in the settings that corrects the situation. Present adaptive backlight. It works efficiently and optimally adjusts the brightness in different lighting conditions. It doesn't hurt your eyes at night, you can see everything in the sun. Viewing angles are above average, but not maximum. Overall, the screen quality is good, especially considering the price tag. In early cheap models the screens were very pale. In this case there is no such nuance.

Important! It’s a nice thing that the brand didn’t skimp on the oleophobic coating. The screen doesn’t get too dirty and can be cleaned without much difficulty.

Operating Parameters

Sony Xperia E5 (f3311) is equipped with an inexpensive quad-core processor from MediaTek. The maximum frequency is 1.3 gigahertz. The phone's performance is not bad, there are some strange stutters in unexpected places, for example, when launching the camera. But in general, the device deserves a four in terms of performance. It is not designed for games, only at minimum settings, you can surf the Internet. The device has a small amount of main storage memory; about half of the 16 gigabytes is available.

According to tests the device gains 30 thousand points. This is small, but not for the budget segment.

The Sony Xperia E5 phone received a 2300 mAh battery. The manufacturer claims that the phone will survive 2 days, but this is an obvious lie. This is impossible with such a battery, and real-life usage models prove that the manufacturer is wrong. Under heavy loads the phone works approximately 9-10 hours, that is, it is enough for a working day.

Advice! The model has a proprietary Stamina energy saving mode. Those who buy the device primarily as a phone can not turn it off at all, and the device will show excellent autonomy.

Camera in Sony Xperia E5 not bad for the budget segment, but to understand this, you need to follow three recommendations:

  • fast MicroSD;
  • disabled object tracking mode;
  • This is not a photo flagship - you don't have to wait much.

The phone does nice pictures during the day. At dusk and at night, you shouldn’t take it out to take photos. The main module is 13 megapixels, tracking autofocus (must be turned off), HDR support. The front camera is wide-angle and has a resolution of 5 megapixels. It takes quite nice pictures, but, again, only during the day. Noticeable facial enhancement effect, which works by default.

Conclusion

The price of Sony Xperia E5 is 10 thousand rubles. When purchasing this device, the user will receive a fairly high-quality phone with a good design and a wide range of wireless communications. The model has a good display for its price tag. Selfie lovers will appreciate the camera's performance. The device cannot be called very interesting. But this is definitely not a passing device. Whether it's worth buying depends on your attitude towards competitors. There are models from Samsung - these are the initial devices of the J series, and there are all kinds of Chinese ones. What to choose depends only on the buyer, but the phone is definitely not lost against the background of numerous competitors, which in general are not very different from this model.

Sony Xperia E5

A typical representative of the budget segment based on MTK6735 - interesting design, good front camera (and a strange main one), good display, you can buy it, but with reservations...

Design, construction

The device somehow reminded me of the iPhone 5C - the contours of the plastic case are probably similar, there are characteristic curves. Naturally, there is no question of any copying; modern smartphones are similar to each other, so my feelings can be chalked up as advantages of the device. It seems like a budget smartphone, but it’s nice to pick up and use every day. The screen has an oleophobic coating, fingerprints are invisible on a dark gray smartphone, the same applies to a white smartphone.

On the top there is a 3.5 mm jack and a microphone hole, above the screen there is a strip of earpiece, a front camera, a proximity sensor, and they haven’t forgotten about the adaptive brightness adjustment. At the bottom end there is a microUSB connector without a plug and the main speaker. On the left, a long flap covers the slot for microSD memory cards and a SIM card; a nanoSIM is used. The process of removing the card is interesting: you hook the SIM card tray with your fingernail, and both backings come out. In general, everything is quite logical, but it would have been better to make the trays spring-loaded, pressed and the card popped out.

On the right side there are power and volume buttons. It’s very strange that the rocker is located above the power button; at first, mistakes are common, you press it in the wrong place.

On the back there is a camera lens, a flash, an NFC area, the Xperia inscription is applied to the plastic in the usual way, this is not engraved. Probably, over time the inscription may be erased, but so far no one seems to be complaining.

There is a small dot indicator light above the screen that glows green while charging.

There are no complaints about the assembly, and the design, I repeat, is not bad. Exact dimensions – 144 x 69 x 8.2 mm, weight – 147 grams.

Display

The diagonal of the HD display is 5 inches, as I already said, there is adaptive brightness control. You can adjust the white balance, it’s worth doing this, initially the screen turns yellow, I liked the settings as in the screenshot.

Viewing angles are not bad, in general – the screen is like a screen. It’s good that they didn’t skimp on the oleophobic coating. Therefore, if you are choosing between the Sony Xperia XA and the Xperia E5, I advise you to try both in the showroom - no matter how beautiful the XA is, using the E5 in everyday activities is preferable.

Performance, features

The MTK6735 chipset is used, the main features are as follows:

  • ARM Cortex-A53 64-bit quad-core processor (1.3GHz)
  • ARM Mali-T720 GPU
  • Rel. 9, Cat. 4 LTE (FDD & TDD), DC-HSPA+, TD-SCDMA, CDMA2000 1x/EVDO Rev. A, EDGE
  • 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0
  • 13MP image signal-processor
  • 1080p Full HD video recording and playback at 30fps

Among the interesting things here you can see support for LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, FullHD video recording.

In reality, the device slows down in unusual places - when turning on the camera, when saving a photo, when launching some applications. Turning on and transitioning to the menu is fast and smooth, strange things appear when you turn on something heavy (and heating too).

1.5 GB of RAM, 16 GB of data memory are installed, about half is available to the user. It’s better to immediately rely on a memory card, fortunately they didn’t remove the slot, for which Sony deserves a big thank you. There is another piece of advice: use normal memory cards - this means the recording speed - then there will be no problems when used with the camera.

The version used is Android 6.0 with a number of branded additions, these are themes, a redesigned player, a number of pre-installed applications - the Sony Xperia store, radio, Xperia Lounge with various competitions, discounts and special offers.

Working hours

The stated operating time is about two days, in reality the device lasted until seven in the evening with heavy use right in the morning - sometimes charging ended earlier. The proprietary Stamina and UltraStamina modes help; if the E5 is primarily a phone for you, then it makes sense to always keep them on.

That is, there is nothing surprising here, count on a day of work.

Cameras

The first piece of advice is to disable object tracking in the settings; the device is slow, and this simply interferes with normal focusing. Second tip - use normal memory cards! The third piece of advice is that the E5 is a budget smartphone and doesn’t pretend to be a flagship camera, so don’t expect incredible shots. In normal lighting, you can still shoot something sensible, but in the twilight, trying to take photographs becomes torture.

The main camera is 13 MP, with autofocus and HDR support, the front camera is 5 MP, wide-angle, in my opinion, some kind of filter is preinstalled that smoothes the skin. A 3x Clear Image zoom is announced, which allows you to zoom in and shoot an object; honestly, I didn’t get a single normal shot.

conclusions

I would like to increase the volume of the ringer a little - but there is no room, the vibration is weak. The quality of speech transmission is at a good level, but the speaker seemed very quiet to me, I want to turn it up, but that’s it, the stock has run out. In retail the device costs about 13,990 rubles. In this price category the device has a lot of competitors, including Samsung smartphones, for example the Galaxy J5, which is a little more expensive, or the Galaxy J3, which costs the same. Or Meizu M3s - metal body, two SIM cards, good characteristics.

In general, in isolation from the market, the E5 seems to be not bad, but if you know about other devices in this segment, the budget “player” Sony looks weak, especially in the photographic aspect. But there is also Xiaomi and many other smartphones with little-known names.

Now about the advantages and disadvantages, I’ll start with the pros:

  • Not a bad design
  • Not a bad screen (adaptive brightness adjustment, white balance adjustment)
  • Decent front camera - selfie lovers will like it
  • Your own wallpaper, Stamina/UltraStamina modes, radio, good music player
  • LTE support
  • Slowdowns, heating - it all depends on what applications you use
  • It is difficult to get a normal shot - the camera sometimes behaves strangely, this primarily concerns autofocus. When you have time to master autofocus, and even if the lighting conditions are normal, then you can count on more or less high-quality photographs
  • The stated operating time - two days - can only be achieved if you do not use the device at all. In reality, this is a day, and then with reservations
  • I wish Sony paid more attention to speaker volume

I can give two pieces of advice about E5. Advice number one: if you don’t care about the camera’s capabilities, you like the design and screen of your smartphone, if you like Sony, then you can buy it. A friend of mine bought one for my mother, turned off all wireless interfaces (except for the phone, of course), my mother is happy - because she almost never takes photographs. Of course, this is strange in our time, but I don’t want to prevaricate, the E5 in this sense is not at all an outstanding gadget.

Tip two, unfortunately, in this segment (up to 15,000 rubles) it’s really hard to find something perfect from all points of view. Therefore, if you like Xperia, it is better to add and buy the flagship of previous years, some kind of “compact” with the letter Z.
