The Highscreen brand invariably pleases us with the fact that it tries to release smartphones with care for the consumer's wallet. Until recently, the positioning of brand devices was based on the [valuable feature] plus [the most affordable price, taking this feature into account]. Last summer, Highscreen presented two smartphones at once that implemented this formula 100%.

The first "swallow" was the Highscreen Spark, the most affordable 2-core smartphone in Russia (albeit with a reservation - if you do not take into account the ultra-budget operator models). By the end of August, the Highscreen Alpha Rage went on sale - at the moment the most inexpensive smartphone with a 4-core processor in Russia. Here, without any reservations. In addition, the model runs on Android 4.2, which also seems to be an attractive option, we still have fresh memories of the “creak” with which the popularization of Android 4.0-4.1 went.

Equipment

The eco-friendly recycled cardboard box contains a standard set of instructions, warranty, headset, charger and microUSB cable. Despite the fact that the headset does not shine with quality, it looks quite attractive. The warranty book reminds us again that Highscreen operates the so-called European service model. The brand has a single central service center in Moscow, where you can send devices free of charge from anywhere in the country - just use the services of the Russian Post. As a result, Highscreen seriously saves on costs, while simultaneously receiving, in fact, about 42 thousand services throughout Russia.

Appearance, connectors and controls

For Highscreen Spark and Highscreen Alpha Rage, it would not be superfluous to single out an independent mini-ruler. The fact is that when comparing live, it becomes obvious how similar these models are. By itself, Highscreen Alpha Rage looks in full accordance with its position. This is a discreet smartphone that is a classic of the "average" Android model. That is, there seems to be nothing to blame, but praise for the original design solutions will not work. Note, however, that the model demonstrates a sharp contrast to those "brick-like" dvuhsimochnik, which we saw until the end of 2012. Now, at first glance, you cannot determine how many SIM-cards the device supports, which seems to be an unambiguous compliment to the model.

Some dissonance is caused by the thickness of the case. When you hold the model in your hands or see it in someone else's hands, the thought of as much as 12 mm thick can never come to mind. The maximum is 9-10 millimeters. Another example of a competent design find, when strict right angles in the design of the case are replaced by fillets. By the way, due to them, the device fits perfectly in the palm, sharp corners, due to their absence, do not rest on the hand. The cover is made of a material with a matte surface and, oddly enough, protects against fingerprints better than soft-touch plastic.

At the front of the Highscreen Alpha Rage is a neat speaker grill, light and proximity sensors, a camera, and a row of three touch-sensitive keys. The backlighting of the buttons is, frankly, dim. However, this seems to be more of a plus, since users often complain about the too bright light of the keys. The available level is more than enough to "identify" buttons in the dark.

The layout of the physical keys should appeal to both right-handers and left-handers. In both cases, the volume and power buttons are intuitively located under the thumb and middle fingers. The elements are neither too low nor too high.

Above is a headphone jack, next to it is a microUSB connector. It is noteworthy that a sparkling strip insert runs along the ends. Some element of style.

Elements on the back cover serve as a decoration of the smartphone: attention is drawn to the "chrome" rim slightly raised above the camera body, and the vertical (instead of the usual horizontal) speaker slot.

The lid "sits" firmly, the body of the smartphone does not creak or play, here we see an example of a decently assembled budget model.

The slot for a microSD memory card is "stand-alone", you do not need to disturb the battery to insert a card. SIM card slots are organized in “two floors”. The original choice, more often slots in dual-SIM smartphones are located next to each other, and not one above the other.

Cameras

From the front, the Highscreen Alpha Rage offers a 0.3 megapixel module, from the rear - a more serious 5 megapixel (with autofocus). The shooting application turned out to be extremely well thought out. So, you can freely specify the focus point by touching the desired area on the screen. To zoom, it is enough to bring two fingers together or apart on the display - it is better than calling the slider and varying its position. The shooting menu is non-standard and we have already met several times in Highscreen smartphones, for example, in Alpha Ice and Alpha GTX. The most memorable moment is the side-by-side video recording and photo capture keys.

The quality of the photos "corresponds to the stated megapixels." There are typical "sores" like errors in the exposure determination, which causes a noticeable blurring of the picture. Of course, pictures will not work for a personal photo archive, but the images reduced to 800-1000 pixels look decent and are more than suitable for uploading "instant" photos to Instagram or social networks.

Screen

Looking at the price of the model, you immediately assume that there is no IPS matrix. Indeed, the usual TN-TFT display is installed. But there is also an undoubted plus, the front side is covered with protective glass to avoid the rapid accumulation of scratches. In addition, the 4.5-inch large smartphone screen for 4,990 rubles is a notable achievement for the Russian mobile market.

Did the resolution let you down? You can't say for sure, considering the price 480 x 854 pixels (FWVGA) are quite expected. Crystal-smooth pictures, like in HD, cannot be achieved, but the screen does not suffer from excessive pixelation either. I would like to see more natural color reproduction, although the observed quality is expected given the type of matrix. The viewing angles are average, with deviations, the brightness decreases. Inversion appears only on one side. The “non-standard” resolution caused some concern, but of the games tested, only Frontline Commando was “capricious”.

Performance

The 4-core processor is represented by the MediaTek MT6589M model with a frequency of 1.2 GHz and a PowerVR SGX544MP graphics chip. The bundle looks strong, although it is clear that in terms of total power it is inferior to the top-end processors of flagship smartphones. RAM is only 512 MB. Not the largest volume, but let's not forget that we are talking about a budget model. Just a year ago, in the budget segment, the amount of RAM was only 256 MB, so this was really not enough not only for running 3D games, but even for ordinary applications. Present in the Highscreen Alpha Rage "half a giga" - a level with its own characteristics.

The device is capable of handling almost all 3D titles, playing Full HD videos and solving other complex tasks. But only "solo", the limited amount of RAM does not tolerate multitasking. Therefore, if you turn on the player during the game or open many tabs in the browser - be prepared for "brakes", miracles do not happen. If you load the memory with only one main process at a time, there are no problems - the smartphone quickly scrolls through web pages, does not "dull" in the system interface and produces 20-30 FPS in 3D entertainment.

Of the benchmarks, we limited ourselves to two Vellamo tests - the Highscreen Alpha Rage hit the top lines in both tests.

As mentioned above, the smartphone does not experience any particular difficulties with games. The effect is that a low resolution a priori gives a lower load on the graphics subsystem in comparison with HD or Full HD screens.

System

Often, users believe that smartphone brands decide on their own which version of Android will be used on a device. In reality, only the chip maker is in charge of this issue. Therefore, for example, if Android 4.3 does not appear for the Sony Xperia M, then it will be Qualcomm's fault, not the Japanese company. MediaTek has a lot to praise in this regard - last year the company's chipsets gave a sharp boost to the popularity of Android 4.1. As for the MT6589M, Android 4.2 is fully adapted for it. This makes it possible to use the current platform in a smartphone at a modest price.

There is not much own memory in Highscreen Alpha Rage, only 4 GB. Therefore, the smartphone does not suffer from the dominance of additional applications, except that new wallpapers have been added. But the big plus is that in separate programs, highlighted demanded system options - system update, modem mode and Bluetooth. It turned out a kind of shortcuts to quickly access functions. Not without "non-standard" programs, there is a backup tool, a file manager and a client of the cloud service 4Sync. The latter gives the owners of Highscreen Alpha Rage 20 GB of space, while for free everyone is provided with only 15 GB.

Autonomous work

We immediately put the battery capacity as a plus for the smartphone. 2,000 mAh - 5-inch models and / or devices with "gluttonous" filling are often satisfied with this amount. Unsurprisingly, the Highscreen Alpha Rage lasted two full days in our high-load tests. When we tried to give up games and used only 30 minutes of 3G internet in total, the model worked for three days on a single charge.

Output

In 2012, we never dreamed of anything like that for 4,990 rubles. For example, from the start, for 6,490 rubles, a Higshcreen Jet Duo was offered with a 3.2-inch screen, 2 megapixel camera and a single-core 800 MHz processor. Compare to Highscreen Alpha Rage: 4.5-inch display, 5MP camera, 1.2GHz quad-core processor. And a design that at least does not evoke negative emotions. In fact, the shortcomings of the model fully fit into the compromises expected based on the price: an average screen and camera, a little RAM, and the display resolution is low. However, the combination of excellent performance and battery life alone is worth a lot. Although no, 4,990 rubles is quite inexpensive for such advantages.

Frankly, I'm not a fan of cheap smartphones. I prefer to pay dearly for "megahertz and megabytes", which will still be relevant at least in a year. However, the market is growing mainly due to budget devices, which no, no, and are in the focus of my attention. For example, I really want to try Xiaomi Red Rice and Motorola Moto G. However, so far these are only desires and, a little, dreams. But reality threw into my hands a completely different state employee - Highscreen Alpha Rage. Not being imbued at first with his appearance, he went to the Internet to evaluate what's what. It turned out that this smartphone, in general, is not so bad, and at a price of 4,990 rubles, it has few real alternatives (of course, in official retail).

Before going directly to the text, I would like to outline the audience that can live with Highscreen Alpha Rage. In my opinion, there are schoolchildren and students on one side of the barricades, doctors and teachers on the other. In a word, those who are accustomed to treating large spending with heightened responsibility. If only because he receives (earns) not the largest sums. Hence the meaning of the title of the review.

Unintelligible appearance

It is very difficult to make a frankly inexpensive smartphone attractive from the outside, but you can see it in Highscreen and did not try. Rounded corners, beveled side edges, pseudo metal edging around the perimeter - all this has already been seen a thousand times on smartphones from other companies. Especially Samsung.
The screen is covered with glass, quite easily soiled. The back panel is a cross between ordinary plastic and soft-touch. I don't really like the fact that a tide forms in the area of the camera lens - the frame of the "eye" painted like metal will quickly peel off.

Under the cover we can see the original system for installing SIM-cards - one above the other in two floors. Well, at least a microSD card slot is easily accessible. The battery is removable, with a capacity of 2000 mAh. The battery life with active use of the smartphone is a day, with moderate use - two.

I did not notice any serious ergonomic mistakes in the Highscreen Alpha Rage, because of the relatively small diagonal the device holds in the hand well, the buttons are pressed normally. There are only two last ones: on the left side there is a volume rocker, on the right - an on / off key. The headphone and USB cable jacks are located on the top edge.

In the original box, the appearance of which vaguely resembles the boxes of Xiaomi smartphones, there was a battery, a USB cable with a charger, a warranty card with instructions and a wired headset of poor quality.

Display - large

The display for a smartphone for 4,990 rubles is large, 4.5 inches. As mentioned above, the screen is easily soiled, and due to the use of the TN matrix, the viewing angles are very small. However, if you do not plan to often look at the display with someone else, it will do. Non-standard resolution, 854 x 480 pixels. I was worried about compatibility with games and programs, but the worries were in vain. The cache that I use with other MTK smartphones and tablets has not been naughty with the Highscreen Alpha Rage either. The margin of brightness is moderate, on a clear day you have to twist it to the maximum on the street. Which, in principle, is often characteristic of higher quality IPS matrices.

All the beauty inside

Highscreen Alpha Rage is built on the MediaTek MT6589M platform, which opens up the MT6589 series. It includes a 1.2 GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor and a PowerVR SGX544 GPU. In light of the recently announced eight-core MT6592 platform, of course, there is nothing remarkable here, but for an inexpensive smartphone, the presence of MT6589M is a bold plus, because it provides decent performance, which will be discussed below. Note that HTC, LG or Samsung devices, even more expensive ones, offer users very dull single-dual-core platforms like Qualcomm MSM7227A (HTC 200, LG Optimus L5) or STE Novathor U8500 (Samsung Galaxy Ace 2).

The smartphone supports GSM (850/1900 MHz) and UMTS (2100 MHz) networks. It provides Wi-Fi 802.11b / g / n and Bluetooth 4.0 adapters, as well as a GPS receiver.

The amount of RAM went under the knife to make the smartphone cheaper - only 512 MB is available. But the amount of flash memory is standard 4 GB, of which something about 2.6 GB is available to the user. Due to the presence of a microSD slot, which I already wrote about, the small amount of flash memory is not a problem. Actually, you can put up with 512 MB of RAM too. The main thing is not to load several games at once and control the memory load by other applications.

What do schoolchildren and students need from a smartphone? To "pull games and without lags." And here I dare to note that Highscreen Alpha Rage games are good. And not ordinary 2D like Angry Bird, Hill Climb Racing or Plants vs. Zombies, but also quite three-dimensional like Asphalt 8 or Modern Combat 4.
Benchmarks favor a low screen resolution and a sufficiently powerful GPU (despite the fact that it operates at a frequency of only 156 MHz). AnTuTu rated the Highscreen Alpha Rage hardware platform at nearly 14,000 points, confirming that the device is in the middle in terms of performance. The rest of the benchmarks are generally in solidarity with AnTuTu.

OS - "naked" Android 4.2

Clean and unencumbered by any add-ons, Android 4.2 is what drives the Highscreen Alpha Rage. With a small amount of RAM, this is a big plus, there is no unnecessary reason to unload unnecessary applications from memory.

From the programs installed by the developers, there is a file manager (not bad, but it was replaced by the more familiar ES Explorer), an FM receiver with good sensitivity, a video player (I did not use it, since I immediately installed BS Player) and a music player. The latter pleases with the ability to turn on the bass boost function and add depth to the sound (3D), but they do not add sound quality to the bundled headphones. There is also a program for quick access to cloud storage 4Sync (20 GB "exclusive" for the model, otherwise - 15 GB), if you suddenly find yourself running out of space on Dropbox.

Separate menu items allow you to quickly check for system updates, enable 3G sharing over Wi-Fi, and back up data to a memory card.

Camera

Cameras in Highscreen Alpha Rage shoot in satisfactory quality. Actually, the facial is forgivable, there is no special quality required, but I would like more from the main one.
With good ambient lighting on the machine, the pictures turn out to be good in detail and noise, but still a little dark - you cannot do without exposure correction. The color rendition is a little with a bias in cold tones, but this is more or less typical for almost all smartphones.
With a lack of light, the white balance suffers, noise and problems appear in the autofocus, which was also, in general, expected. What I didn't expect was the functionality of the camera menu. There is a smart auto mode, panoramic shooting mode and HDR! Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised by such an abundance of possibilities from such an affordable device.

The camera records video with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels at 30 frames per second.

Verdict

On the face of the terrible, kind inside - this is just about the Highscreen Alpha Rage. Repulsive in appearance, this smartphone has a good set of consumer qualities (no matter how hackneyed it sounds), especially given the low price. Therefore, it is not surprising that the target audience demonstrates (judging by the thematic forums) heightened interest in it.

Introduction

Today in the Russian market there is a huge number of inexpensive smartphones with interesting technical characteristics. Despite the fact that Highscreen Alpha Rage began to be sold a long time ago, at the moment it has not lost its relevance at all: at a cost of just under 5,000 rubles, it has a quad-core processor from MediaTek on board (with one caveat - the chipset with the M index ), a relatively large screen diagonal of 4.5 inches, an adequate battery capacity of 2000 mAh, and a completely normal autofocus camera. I feel that in a year, or even earlier, for this money it will be possible to buy a decent phone, practically not inferior to modern gadgets in the middle price segment.

Design, dimensions, controls

It is necessary either to speak about the design of such devices in a positive way, or not to speak at all, since some manufacturers try to somehow highlight their models, others simply rivet the same type of gadgets. Unfortunately, Rage belongs to the latter, i.e. it is a faceless piece of black plastic with an almost oval shape. I understand that such devices are cheap due to their simple appearance, but you can at least somehow distinguish phones from the “crowd” of similar ones.

The front side is protected by glass. It's not Gorilla Glass, but after several weeks of using the phone, not a single deep scratch remained on the display. The surface is non-marking, but traces still remain, they are erased very easily - undoubtedly a plus. The edging is made of glossy plastic. The back cover is made of soft-touch plastic. Thin frame around the perimeter - dark chrome-plated plastic.

The assembly of the device, in general, is not bad, but the rear center area slightly bends down to the battery. Otherwise, everything is fine: the case does not play, does not creak, and does not crunch when compressed. There are no slots or gaps. It fits well in the hand, since the shape of the back panel is sloping along the edges.

The dimensions of the Rage are as follows: 136x67x12 mm. Such a plump gadget, however, is almost imperceptible due to the thinning of the case towards the side edges. It weighs 145 grams.

The speech speaker is located at the top of the front panel. It is covered with a thin plastic mesh. The speaker has an average volume, mainly high frequencies are heard, the interlocutor is heard clearly, but the intelligibility could be better. At maximum volume, it wheezes slightly. Next to the speaker is a front camera, light and proximity sensors.

Touch buttons "Back", "Home", "Menu" are located under the display. They are applied to the body in white translucent paint. There is a backlight, it is dim, but you can see it well at night, it does not hit your eyes. The sensitivity is good. There is a microphone under the Back button.

At the top there is a 3.5 mm audio output for headphones and a micro-USB connector. On the right, just above the center, is the power button. It is a little concave, it is easy to feel with your fingers, the pressure is soft, the stroke is average, there is no click sound. The volume rocker on the left side is about the same type.

On the back of the device there is a camera module, a flash and a slot where the speakerphone is hidden.

To open the lid, you must pry it off by the notch on the bottom end. Bottom left, one above the other - miniSIM-cards (the one below - SIM1, working in 2G / 3G, SIM2 - only in 2G), on the right - a slot for a microSD memory card with "hot" replacement.

In this Highscreen model, the screen diagonal is 4.5 inches. Physical size - 56x99 mm, frames on the right and left by 6 mm, top - 15 mm, bottom - 22 mm. Display resolution is typical for such devices - 854x480 pixels, density - 217 pixels per inch. Pixelation is invisible, at least at a distance of 20-30 cm. The matrix is not made using IPS technology, therefore, when the display is tilted away from you, the brightness and contrast are reduced, and the colors are inverted away from you. The brightness of the matrix backlight is slightly higher than average. During the day, the picture is visible well, in the sun it fades a lot, in the room the brightness can be reduced to 50-60%. The backlight control range is narrow, the minimum value is not very comfortable for reading information at night.

The Highscreen Alpha Rage uses a removable 2000 mAh (7.4 Wh) lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery. The manufacturer does not provide data on autonomy.

The operating time of the gadget is exactly the same as that of any other Android smartphone of this class, i.e. "Lives" for about 7-8 hours in a relatively active mode with a 3G connection: 20-30 minutes of talks, about an hour of using the camera, the same amount of video viewing, 3-4 hours in twitter and mail.

Both the AC adapter and USB charge the battery within 4 - 4.5 hours.

I skipped the section with communication capabilities, since there is nothing original in it: support for two 2G / 3G SIM cards, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and so on.

The device has 512 MB of RAM, about 150 MB of free on average. Few people find one gigabyte for less than 5,000 rubles. The quality of the photos is very average (low detail, soap at the edges of the frames), but for a device for 5,000 rubles it will do just fine, besides, you can use focusing. The video writes in a resolution of 1280x720 pixels at 30 frames per second. The sound is relatively clear (relatively because there is some crackling and faint noise). In any case, the sound is clearer than on devices with the old MTK6577.
