Comparison of new generation consoles: PS4 vs. XBOX One. Xbox One vs PS4: The most detailed comparison between the two platforms Xbox or ps4 which is better

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One came out five years ago, but gamers are still debating which platform is better. However, it has always been like this - even twenty years ago there was no consensus on the choice of the best console - however, then the fans of Nintendo and Sony sorted out the relationship. In this article, we will analyze the main criteria for the quality of game consoles point by point and identify the key advantages of each of them.

Design

If it is important for you that the console fits organically into the interior, you should visit the store and personally check out the design and dimensions of both consoles, as they look noticeably different.

FAT versions

First, the Xbox One is noticeably larger (343x81x264 vs. 275x53x305mm), so keep this in mind if you have limited space near your TV. While the PS4's case is smaller and therefore heats up more, it runs quieter. Visually, the PlayStation 4 is divided into two parts - glossy and matte - between them there is a luminous strip that changes color depending on the mode of operation.

Slim and S

Perhaps because the original Xbox One is often compared to a VHS VCR, Microsoft brought in designer Andrew Kim to design the look of the updated console. As a result, the Redmond console received a stylish black and white case, got rid of the external power supply and became 40% smaller.

But the “thinner” PlayStation 4 has not so many changes: in the PS4 Slim, the Japanese made the entire case matte - according to the community, the glossy side was badly scratched. In addition, sharp corners have become smoothed and, of course, the console itself has decreased in size.

X and Pro

In the case of improved modifications, the situation is reversed. The appearance of the Xbox has changed slightly, and the PlayStation has changed quite noticeably. So, in the Xbox One X, in comparison with the Slim version, only the color has changed - it has become black, and the dimensions have remained the same to the nearest millimeter. In turn, the PS4 Pro has grown even in comparison with the FAT-coy and began to look more brutal due to the three-piece body (by the way, this is why the PS4 Slim, consisting of two halves, was called the "sandwich", and the Pro - the "hamburger").

Specifications

FAT

Early in their life cycle, both consoles were based on the same AMD Jaguar processor running at 1.75 GHz. Both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have 8 GB of RAM, but this amount is used a little differently: Sony allowed 5 GB for games and 3 GB for the OS, Microsoft saved a little on performance in games and distributed RAM in a ratio of 4 .5 GB for games and 3.5 GB for the operating system.

If you do not go into details, the PS4 outperforms the competitor in a number of less significant parameters: it has more render units, graphics card shaders and a higher frequency of RAM. All this allows the PlayStation 4 to outperform the Xbox in overall performance - 1.84 teraflops versus 1.31.

Slim and S

Smaller versions of consoles have changed externally, but inside everything remains the same. The only new feature is support for 4K and HDR TVs.

X and Pro

With the release of more productive modifications, Microsoft and Sony seriously upgraded their platforms, breathing new life into not the most recent devices, but against the backdrop of the characteristics of the fresh X, the PlayStation 4 Pro does not look so convincing anymore.

It is inferior in terms of the amount of RAM and its speed (12 GB versus 8 GB and 326 GHz versus 218 GHz, respectively), processor frequency (2.3 GHz versus 2.13 GHz) and overall performance (6 Tflops versus 4.12 Tflops) , only the minimum amount of ROM remained the same, which is now 1 TB. On the other hand, PS4 Pro has remained the same well-optimized platform, which has also become easy to handle VR projects.

Controllers

Microsoft decided not to reinvent the wheel and transferred the design of the Xbox 360 gamepad to a new generation of consoles, so here you will see all the same two sticks spaced at different ends of the gamepad, a cross at the bottom of the front panel, X, Y, A, B buttons, convenient triggers and a couple of small additional keys.

The Xbox One controller is powered by two AA batteries, but if you wish, you can purchase a rechargeable battery for $ 25, but in terms of autonomy, the first option is much better - instead of five hours of active play, you will enjoy your favorite games twice as long. In addition, there is a more advanced version of the controller from Microsoft called the Xbox One Wireless Controller Elite, which features design, better ergonomics, interchangeable triggers and sticks, rubberized grips and three times the price.

The Japanese are not looking for easy ways, so they changed the design of the previous generation of the controller, making the new DualShock 4 more massive, heavy, and at the same time, Sony reduced the body length. But its main difference from the Xbox One Wireless Controller is the presence of a large touchpad, built-in speakers and a gyroscope. The touchpad is used to simplify navigation in the browser and additional actions in games, speakers allow you to make gameplay more interactive (for example, in GTA V, the gamepad plays phone calls and conversations on a police radio, it turns out very cool in practice), and with the help of a gyroscope you can control the cursor when keyboard input and aim in some games like Blue Estate. The DualShock 4 is powered by a built-in battery, no replacement batteries are needed.

Accessories

The range of additional equipment for current consoles, frankly, is small: Microsoft only offers a contactless Kinect touch game controller, Sony has a station for recharging several gamepads at once, its own virtual reality helmet, PS Move controller and PlayStation Eye camera for motion capture.

Also here you can record a portable PS Vita console, on which, thanks to the Cross play function, you can play “adult” games on a small screen. However, PS Vita production in 2018.

Exclusives

When choosing a platform, many gamers are guided by the number and quality of games available only on this console. According to this indicator, Sony is the undisputed leader - in its arsenal there are such masterpieces as the zombie shooter The Last of Us, the bloody tale of revenge on mythical creatures God of War, the hardcore Action / RPG Bloodborne, the cult car simulator Gran Tourismo, the cartoon adventure Ratchet & Clank , action-adventure Uncharted, Spider-Man and many others, including a lot of VR projects. Including the latest, a review of which can be read on our website.

There's a lot to play on the Xbox too, but the quality of most Microsoft exclusives can't be compared to games on the PlayStation. And yet, Xbox One owners have at their disposal a series of shooters Halo, action Gears of War, platformer Cuphead and a whole scattering of simulators of anything.

Backward compatibility and online services

Xbox One supports compatibility with games from the Xbox 360 - that is, without the X360 itself, you can easily run blockbusters from five or ten years ago. The PlayStation 4 does not have such an opportunity, most likely, the Japanese will introduce its consoles, but this is not a fact either.

If Xbox wins in terms of backward compatibility, then in terms of additional gaming services ... Xbox also wins. Sony offers a PlayStation Plus subscription that gives you two major free games every month, access to Share Play (remote play on a friend's console to their games), great PS Store discounts, the ability to play online, and exclusive early access to closed beta tests.

The Russian representative office of Sony offers three subscription options: a month for 499 rubles, 3 months for 1599 rubles and 12 months for 3899 rubles. Users who have subscribed regularly to PS Plus since the console was launched in 2013 have already accumulated a huge number of first-rate hits in their library. For beginners, there is a free 14-day trial subscription, which can be renewed using special recharge vouchers, or by linking a bank card to your account.

Microsoft customers have significantly more freedom of choice, since Xbox Live Gold and . Microsoft's gaming subscription services have long been dubbed the "Netflix of gaming" for the ability to try any game available on them.

The most popular among those listed is the Game Pass, its cost is $10 (~650 rubles) per month. It gives a 20% discount when buying games from the current catalog 18 990 rubles

Conclusion

Xbox One and PS 4 are as similar as they are different. On the PlayStation side there is a rich library of well-known titles, high-quality optimization of cross-platform projects, a line of branded accessories and active work with the Russian-speaking community. Xbox can respond with an interesting subscription, backwards compatibility, and integration into the Microsoft ecosystem.

How do you like the current game console market? It's hard to choose, isn't it? What began as a naive two-year standoff between PS4 and Xbox One back in 2013 has now turned into a battle of six powerful hardware platforms, and that's not even counting Nintendo, which has hardly shown itself for many years.

Sony's console lineup currently consists of two models that are commercially available: the slim PS4 Slim, which replaced the original console back in 2016, and the PS4 Pro, which plays all the same games but is designed for use with 4K TVs.

Meanwhile, Microsoft's lineup currently consists of just one machine, the Xbox One S, which has now replaced the Xbox One as Microsoft's default console. It will soon be joined by the Xbox One X, along with themed variations in the form of Project Scorpio and Minecraft Edition, which is also a 4K version of the console.

In this review, we will not compare any models of consoles separately, but we will compare the two ecosystems of Xbox One and PS4 as a whole. We'll take a look at their respective specs, graphics, pricing, controllers, games, and even non-gaming features.

Obviously, in terms of sales, Sony has a clear lead. According to VGChartz, the company has already sold nearly 60 million consoles, more than twice as many as Microsoft's Xbox has sold.

Sony made sure that there were more than enough great exclusive titles for its console, and at the same time strengthened its position by launching a new model in a thin case, as well as an advanced 4K console.

By the way! It's also the only console to feature a fully functional virtual reality headset, PlayStation VR!

Not to be outdone, Microsoft bounced back (and new exclusives) and was able to substantially close the sales gap with Sony. In addition to giving gamers a nice selection of great titles, the company also offered them a thin Xbox One S console.

And while Sony thought it was safe with its PS4 Slim, Microsoft even took the lead by equipping its One S with an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive and upscaling games to 4K. And at the same time, it announced the Xbox One X, which already offers full-fledged (not scaled) 4K games on its own. Not only that, the company has big ambitions in ensuring Xbox One compatibility - Windows 10 (check!) and connecting to Xbox Play Anywhere services and Xbox Game Pass (mat?).
Yes, it will be very difficult to do this, but if everything works out, the “box” will definitely be able to rise steeply above its competitors. However, even earlier, due to the cross-platform PC / Xbox multiplayer, the company was able to attract many fans of the Minecraft universe, which will soon be supported and other company hardware.

Xbox One vs PS4:versions and design
  • As mentioned above, PS4 is available in two different versions: PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro.
  • At the same time, Xbox One has only expanded to Xbox One S so far, but the Xbox One X will soon join them, along with all of its "extra versions".
And where before you could choose from just two console options, now there are about half a dozen of them, as Sony and Microsoft have been updating their console offerings for the past three and a half years.

The original dimensions of the Xbox One make it a rather impressive gaming monster - 34.2 x 26.4 x 8.1 cm, not counting the huge "brick" of the external power supply with a bunch of vents. Meanwhile, the Xbox One S is a much more compact machine: only 29.4 x 22.6 x 6.3 cm without any external power supply. The console has roughly the same design as its "big brother", but at the same time it looks much more elegant. Meanwhile, the PS4 has gone through three different versions, of which two are currently on sale.

The original PS4 has a more distinctive angular shape with an overall stylish design. This semi-gloss console measures 27.4 x 30.4 x 5 cm at its widest point. A little later, the PS4 console became completely matte, while maintaining the same dimensions.

The slim version of the PS4 came out in 2016, shrunk to 26.4 x 28.7 x 3.8 cm, which is clearly smaller than the Xbox One S. In addition to the PS4 slim, the PS4 Pro was also released in 2016, who brought 4K support to the PS4 platform. True, even today, there are very few games at this resolution so far, with most of them achieving it solely by scaling, which looks far from the best way. In addition to the increase in power, the PS4 Pro is also a larger machine - 32.5 x 29.4 x 5.3 cm.

As you can see, the first consoles were really very different in size, while the current models are much closer in this regard. If you really don't have much space to put your console, that PS4 slim has a slight advantage, but that's about it.

The gaming industry has not yet grown up to Ultra HD 4K resolution (3840x2160): for gamers this is too expensive an enterprise, and developers do not really know how to score eight million pixels on the screen. You remember that FullHD monitors did not immediately come to every home.

Surprisingly, console manufacturers tried to make the new standard mass and affordable: Sony And Microsoft. Today we will compare PS4 Pro And Xbox One X, let's try to sketch out a plan for buying a PC of similar characteristics and answer the question of whether it is worth chasing 4K in a world dominated by 1920x1080 resolution.

PS4 Pro

Let's start with the one who first jumped over his head, that is, with Sony and its PS4 Pro. The system went on sale on November 10, 2016 at a price of 35,000 rubles. Compared to the regular PS4, the novelty is not far ahead: the same processor ( AMD Jaguar, eight cores), but with a frequency increased from 1.6 to 2.1 GHz, a modified graphics module (there were 36 computing units, the speed increased to 911 MHz), the same memory, only 1 GB DDR3 is now allocated to support 8 GB GDDR5 , and not 256 MB, but the throughput has increased from 176 to 218 Gb / s.

Which begs the question - how does the PS4 Pro handle 4K? And in a roundabout way - in particular, upscaling (scaling) the frame! Sony has adopted checkerboard rendering, one of the upscaling methods: in this case, 50% of the image is rendered, the missing data is taken from the buffer where the previous frame is stored, and neighboring pixels. Thus, the console honestly renders every second pixel.

Thanks to checkerboard rendering on PS4 Pro at 3840x2160, for example, Horizon Zero Dawn(at 30 fps), Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare(60 fps) and Rise of the Tomb Raider(30 fps). In individual games (say, in the same Rise of the Tomb Raider), developers offer users a choice - 4K at 30 fps, Full HD at 60 fps (recall that a regular PS4 is capable of a maximum of 1080p / 30 fps) or Full HD with elaborate effects . Something similar can be found in Nioh .

Checkerboard rendering isn't Sony's only trick. PS4 Pro also saves dynamic resolution. In Nioh, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor And Diablo 3 the quality of the picture changes depending on the workload of the scene - roughly speaking, if there are a lot of enemies on the screen, the resolution drops. In natural 4K at 60 fps, very few games function on the PS4 Pro: FIFA 17 , Mantis Burn Racing, PES 17 , Wheels of Aurelia and various indie projects.

Why is there 4K - PS4 Pro even honest 1440p overcomes with difficulty and groaning. And yet, buying a console can justify itself: if the “old” game received the appropriate patch, then on the “firmware” it will work in 1080p, maybe even at 60 fps and with ennobled visual effects.

Well, there are isolated exceptions like Horizon Zero Dawn, showing the fangs and muscles of the Pro version in all its glory. And although the PS4 Pro is selling very well, it should be noted that part of its success is due to the fact that the regular PS4 has managed to thoroughly become outdated.

Xbox One X

Microsoft condescendingly looked in the direction of a competitor for half a year and half-heartedly listened to not quite correct marketing promises in order to dot the “e” at E3 2017. Xbox One X, formerly known as Project Scorpio, left no stone unturned by the PS4 Pro.

The console is based on an eight-core processor with a frequency of 2.3 GHz (it is possible that we have an old familiar AMD Jaguar, carefully modified by Microsoft engineers), a graphics subsystem with forty computing units at a speed of 1172 MHz (slightly more than AMD Radeon RX 480) and 12 GB of GDDR5 memory with a bandwidth of 326 Gb / s. If developers under PS4 Pro have 5.5 GB of memory available, then in the case of Xbox One X, the situation is much more rosy - 8 GB.

To date, it is known that developers Forza Motorsport 7 , Project CARS 2 And F1 2017 aimed at 4K/60 fps. The teams responsible for Middle-earth: Shadow of War And Crackdown 3, requests are a little more modest - 4K / 30 fps. In the second category marks and Gears of War 4- Just like on PS4 Pro, many projects released before the launch of the console will receive special patches. We add that individual games (the same Forza Motorsport 7) will support HDR- a technology that emphasizes the transitions between shades of black and white.

But no matter how powerful the Xbox One X may seem, it also does not shy away from the “chess” rendering. Of the games presented at E3 2017, attentive journalists noticed the “corpse spots” of upscaling in Assassin's Creed Origins And Anthem .

In order not to mislead gamers, Microsoft will start gluing icons on games in the fall. Buyers may see the icons "HDR" (we explained about it a little higher) and "4K Ultra HD" - this will mean support for honest 4K, 3840x2160, using upscaling or dynamic resolution. There will also be a third icon, "Xbox One X Enhanced", which can be translated as "we did some work, but we didn't make it to 4K."

Xbox One X will appear in stores on November 7, the cost in the Russian Federation is 39,990 rubles. It turns out that the PS4 Pro song is sung? Well, she will have to make room in the market. Paying only $100 on top (exactly 5,000 rubles in the Russian Federation), you get an order of magnitude more powerful CPU and GPU, an impressive amount of memory, a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray optical drive (the PS4 Pro does not have one) and a faster hard drive. In addition, Xbox One X has added support for AMD FreeSync. The essence of this technology is simple: the display adjusts to the frame rate of the video chip, and there are no unpleasant picture breaks.

Why did we put the picture with Xbox One S? For some reason, Microsoft decided that the PS4 Pro is a rival to the Xbox One S. That is, the Xbox One X is no match.

PC

Microsoft is comparing the Xbox One X console to a $1,500 computer. Of course, the employees of the Redmond corporation are cunning. Do you want facts? Please.

From our last year test NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060, GTX 1070 And GTX 1080 it’s easy to understand that even the GTX 1080 alone can’t handle 4K at “maximum speed”. It would be a mistake to believe that inside the Xbox One X there are expensive “organs” like the GTX 1080. As the editors of the magazine correctly deduced PC World, Microsoft's "superconsole" is roughly equivalent to a PC tuned for 4K at 30 fps on medium graphics settings.

PC World assembled such a computer for $652 (the price is relevant for mid-June, when the cryptocurrency fever just straightened its shoulders). Processor included AMD FX-8300(eight cores, 3.3 GHz), motherboard ASRock 970 Pro3(with socket AM3+, support for DDR3 RAM and without Wi-Fi module), die Patriot Signature with 8 GB DDR3-1600 card Radeon RX 580 with 8 GB ( DNS indicates that now this will cost 30,000 rubles), a hard drive Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB (7200 rpm), power supply Thermaltake Smart(550 W) and case Thermaltake Versa H21. Excluding disk drive and license Windows 10 Home the assembly will cost you about 60,000 rubles.

Instead of the Radeon RX 580, you can take the GTX 1060 with 6 GB of memory (25,500 rubles). Or wait until the shelves are located freely Radeon RX Vega 56 And RX Vega 64. However, PC World is not limited to one configuration, but offers a more expensive one: with Core i5-7400(four cores, 3 GHz) and ASRock Fatal1ty Z270 Gaming-ITX/ac.

Not all the "iron" press is in solidarity with PC World (especially since a month and a half has passed since the publication), some put, for example, on a bunch AMD Ryzen 3 1200(four cores, 3.1 GHz), MSI B350M Gaming Pro,

The GeForce GTX 1060, 1070, 1080, as well as the Radeon RX 470, 480, 570 and 580 fell victim to the unquenchable crypto-currency itch of the miners - what do you want to play now?

It would seem simple to answer the question of which is better - PS4 Pro, Xbox One X or PC for 60-70 thousand rubles: take the PC "for growth" and consider the case closed. That's just... none of the three options will give you access to the world of real 4K, full disclaimers. The time to jump from Full HD or 1440p to 4K never came.

PS4 Pro is attractive because it fixes the mistakes of its predecessor: here you get stable 1080p / 60 fps, fast downloads, and an obvious hint to use PS VR paired with a more powerful set-top box. Sony has carefully taken a look at the 4K market, but isn't ready to jump head first into the water just yet.

The Xbox One X boasts "4K without compromise," but it has enough simplifications, otherwise there would be no warning icons. And the surge in mining had a bad effect on the PC segment - cryptocurrency miners stole all serious video cards. So for now, we advise you to wait until November, when the Xbox One X goes on sale, and hope that by then the situation has cleared up.

Grand Theft Auto 5 became available on the eighth generation consoles - PlayStation 4 and Xbox One - a year after the original release on older consoles. How does the famous game about car mayhem look like on new generation devices? Journalists from the Western site Digital Foundry, which specializes in analyzing graphics and performance in games, also asked this question and compared the two versions. In this article, you will find out what conclusion they came to and which version is preferable from a technical point of view.

American beauty

Undoubtedly, with the transition to the power of the eighth generation of consoles, GTA V has gained in beauty. Versions for both consoles are 1080p, and new in the enhanced release is a first-person camera mode so you can get a closer look at the brave new world of Los Santos. There is something to look at - the textures have been redrawn in high resolution, and in addition, the graphics engine has been replenished with new types of effects.

However, it's not just high resolution. The 1080p picture is supported by a high quality anti-aliasing effect. It makes distant details on the horizon easier to see, and road trips through the cities and wilderness of Rockstar's version of Los Angeles no longer cause textures and objects to load unevenly. The main resource required for the enhanced versions, a large amount of memory, is available in abundance on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and objects now load evenly as you explore the world.

The twilight effect in action

The powerful graphics processors of both consoles allowed for more visual effects to be included in the game. The depth of field has changed, twilight rays and volumetric reflections have appeared. After playing on newer consoles, it's hard to go back to previous generation versions. By purchasing this version, the owners of devices from both companies - Sony and Microsoft - will benefit.

New graphic effects

The video shows a side-by-side comparison of the two versions in slow motion for a better view of the details.

In short, both versions are graphically identical, with a couple of exceptions. The most noticeable difference is the less dense vegetation in the Xbox One version compared to the PlayStation 4. Of course, on the Microsoft console, the landscape of GTA 5 does not look like a desert at all, but a comparison with the Sony version reveals less density of trees and grass. However, this does not affect the enjoyment of the game in the Xbox One version. Players will hardly pay attention to such an insignificant detail that does not matter for the in-game mechanics.

Texture quality on both devices is identical. From the fabric of Michael's winter jacket to the gravel in his garden, Rockstar developers have tightened the resolution for all objects and surfaces. Some objects were given a three-dimensional shape by turning on the Parallax occlusion mapping effect. Individual branches and the shape of the trunk now stand out on the trees, and three-dimensional relief on the brick walls of the game world. Another change is the volumetric lighting system. The light now plays with shades on the character models in the game, and the shadows are more complex. Sunsets in Los Santos have become especially beautiful, thanks to the twilight rays breaking through the buildings. Added anisotropic glare effect when turning on car headlights at dusk.

Thanks to the effect of Parallax Occlusion Mapping, the stones in Michael's garden have become more voluminous

All of these visual goodies are best appreciated in first-person mode, an exclusive feature of the enhanced version of GTA 5. From this perspective, you will appreciate the depth and richness of detail. Sitting behind the wheel, you will be surprised to find that the car interiors in the game are also worked out to the smallest detail. In a new perspective, you can play the game from start to finish - a completely new experience of traveling through Los Santos.

Performance test

Both consoles are running at 30 frames per second in v-sync. The introductory game hour produces the promised amount, however, the fps parameter sags in later missions. On PS4, for example, it is possible to experience drops of up to 24 frames per second during races through the crowded main streets of Los Santos, which does not happen in the Xbox One version. The amount of traffic on the roads in both versions is identical, so here the advantage is on the side of the Microsoft console. However, the Xbox One version sags at other points - during explosions and water effects.

Verdict

Technically, GTA 5 was created with an eye on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, but the improved version brings enough changes to return to the world of Los Santos. Versions for both devices run at 1080p with sharper textures and longer draw distances. The only visual downside to the Xbox One version is the less dense vegetation, but that's pretty minor. None of the consoles are running at 30 frames per second throughout the game, but overall the performance of the updated version is noticeably better than the previous generation release. In moments of intense firefights, the number of frames drops on the Xbox One, and in high traffic on the PlayStation 4.

However, it is unlikely that players will notice small flaws in the updated version. The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages - updated graphics and a first-person perspective will show you the world of Los Santos from a new perspective.

You can buy GTA 5 for and in the PiterPlay store.

PS4 and Xbox One densely settled in the game console market, leaving all their competitors far behind.

While Nintendo re-releases old consoles from the 90s and diligently buys ads for Switch from bloggers, their competitors - Sony and Microsoft - are striving to to full 4K gaming, "stuffing" consoles with powerful iron.

It is about the technical aspects of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One that we will talk about in this article.

Console Models

Since the days of the PlayStation One, manufacturers have released several modifications of one console, which is observed now: PS4 Fat, Slim, Pro and Xbox One Fat, S, X.

Originally released Fat-versions of consoles. Later, they were almost completely replaced by the slim versions of Slim and S. After them, PS4 Pro and Xbox One X were presented - most powerful gadgets currently existing.

When comparing PS4 and Xbox One, I want to pay more attention to the very first versions, since they are the most common among users, but we will not forget about the latter.

Design

For some users, it is important to receive from the device not only its functionality, but also aesthetic pleasure, so we will begin to find out which console is better: PS4 or Xbox One. from the outside.

PS4 vs Xbox One

The network has been joking for a long time about the design and weight of the Xbox One. Many ironically point out that Microsoft's designers obviously didn't overwork themselves and drew inspiration from looking at an old VHS recorder. The output turned out to be a huge, noisy and heavy box that does not fit into the image of a modern console. The only plus is the console especially does not heat up and, as practice has shown, does not break.

The PlayStation 4 Fat looks fresh and even a little futuristic. The console is visually divided into two parts - glossy and matte. There is a light indicator on the dividing strip, which gives the console even more originality. Due to the fact that air exits from the end of the case, the prefix heats up more often, but works a little quieter than the competitor.

Xbox One Slim (S) and PS4 Slim

Thanks to the influx of "fresh blood" in the face of designer Andrew Kim, Microsoft was able to surprise users new Xbox One S. Made in white and black, the case looks neat and stylish. Moreover, Kim managed to figure out how to hide a bulky power supply inside the set-top box, and at the same time make it 40% smaller than the previous version.

PlayStation 4 repair

Sony, releasing PS4 Slim, decided to get rid of the glossy surface, which according to the community is the right decision, as it scratched quickly. So, the “thin” version became completely matte, and the smoothed corners gave the appearance even more sophistication. As it should be Slim-modifications, the console has become smaller and lighter.

Xbox One X vs PS4 Pro

If you do not peer into the details, the Xbox One X is almost no different from the Xbox One S.

The main difference is the color, X-modification has become black. And, perhaps, that's all.

If the PS4 Slim was jokingly called the sandwich by the people, since it consisted of two "halves", then the PS4 Pro is a hamburger. In fact, before us is the same Slim-ka, only it already consists of three parts. After looking at the concept art, users thought that the console would become huge, but in reality this did not happen. Yes, attachment bigger and heavier even fat version, but this is not at all critical, given what is inside.

Specifications

Now let's move on to the hardware and find out which is better: PS4 or Xbox One, — under conditions of direct comparison.

PS4 Slim and Xbox One S are smaller and lighter, but hardware and performance remained at the same level, except support for HDR technology(on PS4 it is present only when watching videos, and on Xbox One it is also present in games).

Fat versions

Let's start with the "heart of the console" - the processor. Both attachments work based on 8-core AMD Jaguar, built on the x86-64 architecture, and operating at a frequency of 1.75 GHz.

Computing processes are provided by the so-called "system on a chip". This means that the set-top boxes are equipped with one module that combines the central and graphic processors, the RAM controller and the video codec.

This is where the similarities between consoles in terms of hardware end. If you take a quick look at some PS4 or Xbox One parameters: the number of teraflops (1.84 to 1.31, respectively), the number of video chip shaders (1152 to 768), the number of rendering units (“ROPs”) on video cards (32 to 16) and the main computing units (18 to 12), it can be understood that PS4 is slightly better than its competitor.

In addition, the PlayStation 4 video chip works using an exclusive shader system- PlayStation Shader Language, which is superior not only to OpenGL4, but also to the better known DirectX11.

The PS4 GPU has another advantage - tessellation support, with which the textures of certain objects are displayed in more detail.

Controllers

We have already written about the PS4 and Xbox One gamepads many times, so we will quickly talk main differences without getting into small details.

Controllers from both platforms are different. Moreover, they are different not only externally, but also functionally.

At the center of the PS4's DualShock 4 is Touchpad, which helps to simplify navigation in the browser, and also complements the gameplay. The same functions are performed by the built-in sensor for determining the position in space. That is, for example, when typing in a chat, you can move the gamepad and thus select the letter you need.

There is also a small speaker that makes the gameplay atmospheric, transmitting some of the sounds, for example, phone conversations in GTA V.

Inside the DualShock 4 is built-in battery, which is charged when the controller is connected to the console with a micro USB cable. With active use, the battery is discharged in about 6-8 hours.

With the Xbox One, you get a Microsoft Controller that runs on batteries. 2 pieces are enough for a few weeks active use. In addition, for a certain amount, you can buy an external battery, which is approximately similar in characteristics to the DualShock battery.
