Mac does not turn on. Figured out why Mac won't turn on

Apple MacBook screen not turning on or turning on and off? Anyone can face this issue. Even despite the reliability of laptops, no one is immune from malfunction. Hundreds of people come to us every month with various problems, and MacBooks that won't turn on are one of the most popular.
There can be many reasons. In this article, we will tell you how to conduct an initial diagnosis of a MacBook and what can be done at home, and in which cases it is better to contact the service.

Why won't my MacBook Air or Pro turn on?

To begin with, let's not confuse the concepts "mac os does not boot" and "macbook does not turn on", these are completely different things. In the case of “does not boot”, the computer shows clear signs of life, but the operating system cannot boot for one reason or another.

When the Macbook does not turn on, it shows no signs of life at all, or they are minimal. Despite the fact that there are many reasons, they can be grouped, which we will do. We conditionally divide the problems with turning on the MacBook:

  • Defective battery, charger or charging connector, as well as peripherals;
  • Problems with the motherboard, moisture ingress;
  • Display, keyboard, touchpad, or hard drive not working
  • Does not turn on after updating from the button.

Faults caused by the battery, charger or peripheral.

To rule out a problem with peripherals, try disconnecting all Thunderbolt, USB, Mini Display Port, hdmi devices and remove the flash card if they are connected, and try turning on your MacBook again.
If the charger or charging connector malfunctions, the Mac may run out of power and not charge or turn on. It is easy to diagnose this - if you connect the charger, the indicator on the plug will turn green or orange. If this does not happen, then either the charging or the connector is faulty. Try finding a known-good charger and charge your MacBook.

Often macbook won't turn on due to battery failure. If the macbook is older than 2-3 years, then the battery could wear out and the controller is blocked, in this case, only the battery can be replaced. In this case, the Mac must work from the mains power adapter. By connecting the charger to the laptop, the green light on the plug will light up and the MacBook will automatically turn on. It is advisable to use the original charger. As a last resort, you can try with a copy of the same power. You can read more about battery failure in a separate article replacing a macbook battery.

Macbook motherboard problems.

Often the cause of a breakdown is a faulty motherboard. It is essentially the computer, the most important component. The motherboard fails for the following reasons:

  • Overheat;
  • Mechanical damage;
  • Damage to elements due to power surges;
  • Moisture ingress.

In case of overheating, the video chip (video card) of the MacBook may burn out. It is subject to the greatest temperature influence. In this case, it is possible to replace the video chip with a new one, or replace the entire motherboard, it all depends on the specific case. According to statistics, 80% of Macbook Pro 15s do not turn on precisely because of a video chip failure. This applies to models a1286 and a1297 of 2010-2011. If the MacBook heats up a lot, then there is reason to think about cleaning.

Due to mechanical impacts, such as falls, elements on the motherboard may be damaged. Such damage can cause a short circuit in the power circuits, and the Macbook pro or air will stop turning on. This will require a thorough diagnosis and repair of the elements of the motherboard. The same applies to the consequences of voltage drops, due to which any element of the power circuit can easily burn out, most often goes to the multicontroller.

If you have spilled liquid on the poppy, we recommend that you contact the service center as soon as possible. There is no difference if the macbook does not turn on or is still working. If you can, disconnect the battery immediately and turn the laptop upside down with the keyboard facing down. The liquid causes extensive and serious damage to the motherboard and other components. “It will pass by itself” is not the case. You can fully clean it only by completely sorting out the Mac. You should not risk a laptop for tens of thousands of rubles, believe me.

You can read more about moisture ingress in the article Filled the MacBook. By and large, you will not be able to do any manipulations with the motherboard yourself, so we recommend that you contact a specialized service.

Keyboard, touchpad or screen failure.

Your MacBook may not turn on even if your keyboard or touchpad is defective. The fact is that if the keyboard fails, the power button may not work correctly, or not work at all, which will prevent the Mac from turning on. This applies to all MacBook Pro 13 and Air models.

Separately, it should be said about the Macbook Air. In it, the keyboard, unlike the Macbook Pro 13 or 15, is not connected directly to the board, but first to the touchpad. And it, in turn, is connected by a special cable to the motherboard. Therefore, it may well be that the Macbook Air does not turn on due to a faulty cable or touchpad, and the keyboard has nothing to do with it. In this case, you can try turning off the keyboard and try turning on the MacBook by connecting it to the charger.

Screen damage is usually visible to the naked eye, but sometimes the screen may simply not turn on. In this case, the computer will work. You can understand whether the display is working by pressing the power button, after which you can perform several manipulations:

  • Listen for the sound of turning on;
  • Listen to whether the coolers (cooling system fans) are working;
  • After pressing the power button, wait a bit until the system boots, then try pressing the Caps Lock key, if the computer is working, then a green light will light up on this button.
  • On models a1278, a1286, a1297, there is a white LED on the front end on the right side, if the computer is turned on, it lights up or blinks white.

But even if one or more conditions are positive, the problem may not necessarily be in the display, these are also symptoms of a failure of the video chip or its power circuit.

The most common complaint when contacting a service center with a MacBook is that it won't turn on. If you haven’t spilled anything on it, haven’t noticed “pops” when using it, and don’t smell burning, you shouldn’t rush to the repair service. There are ways that can help correct this situation, of course, if it is not a mechanical failure.

What to do if you can't turn on your macbook? First, stop panicking. The first step is to understand the concept of "does not turn on." This means that when you press the power key, there is no reaction from the laptop. Often users confuse this concept with the lack of an image on the screen, the lack of loading. Due to the lack of prompts in the form of burning diodes, you can judge that the device is turned on by the operation of the fan. The sound of the system greeting can be considered as a starting identifier.

Why won't my MacBook Pro or MacBook Air turn on?

The simplest breakdown in such a situation may not be an air at all, but a power supply. When the charger breaks, it will not work to charge the laptop, and when it is completely discharged, it will not turn on accordingly. Try connecting another power supply and after a short period of time try to turn on the device.

Keyboard

On Apple laptops, the power key is one of the keyboard buttons. The health of the keyboard determines the health of that button. A frequent breakdown of this key is the ingress of liquid into it and further short circuit. The button, even when the gadget is off, is energized, so even a small amount of liquid will be enough.

Discharging or failure

If the laptop is completely discharged, then to turn it on it is necessary that it stand for some time on recharging to replenish the minimum energy level in the battery. If the problem is a power failure (the indicator does not light when connected to power), you need to disconnect the battery for a while. Then connect the battery again. If the laptop boots up, the problem is solved.

The lack of power may be due to the fact that the MagSafe connector has failed. If you have a suspicion that the reason why the laptop may not turn on is this, contact the service center.

Spilled liquid

The ingress of moisture into the product leads to the closure and oxidation of the contacts. As a result, not only the keyboard, but also the motherboard can fail. If you spill something on your device, unplug it and take it to a repair shop right away.

Screen

If you hear that the laptop is booting (you hear the sound of a system greeting, fan noise), but there is no display on the display, most likely the problem is in it or with the video card. If you doubt that the fan is working, press the "CAPS LOCK" key - if it lights up, then this is a display problem.

Part burned out

This part is most often the motherboard, due to the fact that about ten different voltages are applied to it. In addition to it, the chipset and microcontroller can also often fail. You can suspect such a malfunction after excluding the above breakdowns.

Diagnosis at home

It is difficult to diagnose at home without special tools. But you can check the battery discharge and the health of the power button. To remove the cover, you will need a regular screwdriver. To test the button, you need to remove the cover from the battery with a screwdriver. Then disconnect the battery. Detach the keyboard cable and connect the device to charge. This method works for models from 2011 release.

In a situation with a full dead battery, you must also remove the cover and remove the battery. Then plug in your device to charge. The laptop should turn on from the block. Often this procedure can be avoided by resetting the SMC. This reset must be done before you start disassembly.

System Multi-Controller (SMC)

The multicontroller provides power to all connections on the board. Switching on and modes are provided by SMC . His work is carried out even when the laptop is turned off. The multicontroller is equipped with its own firmware and has a reserve of memory where the settings are stored. Failures of this program lead to various "glitches". To resolve these failures, you must reset the settings to the original ones. You can do this in two ways:

1 Turn off the power supply. Disconnect the battery. The power supply to the multicontroller will stop and the next time it is turned on, the settings will be automatically reset. 2 Use keyboard shortcuts. For all Apple laptops, a combination is provided for this. When pressed, a signal is sent to the multicontroller and the settings are reset. For all laptops of the company, it is performed as follows: turn on the charger, press the "Shift", "Control" and "Alt" keys simultaneously. And click the "enable" button. If the charge indicator was orange, then after these actions it will be green. It is better to do this procedure with the gadget turned off.

If the above methods did not help you, and you still do not understand why the device does not turn on, take the gadget and bring it to an authorized repair center for diagnostics and further repairs. For residents of large cities, such as Moscow, finding such a service is not difficult.

If suddenly, no matter what you do, the MacBook does not turn on, it is not necessary to rush to the service center. It is quite possible to try to "reanimate" it at home - typical problems are known and fixing them is quite easy. The only exceptions are mechanical damage and flooding with any liquid, whether it be plain water, chemical liquid, alcohol or a sweet drink.

Another reason to immediately contact the service is the smell of burning and cotton.

Most often, the charger and the power connector, the controller suffer, less often - a short circuit and a system error. The most rare but severe case is a crack in the motherboard or hard drive.

Display Fault Exception

First of all, you need to check the screen - perhaps the computer itself is in order, but there is a problem with the display.

How it can be checked:

    • when you press the power button, you hear the noise of the fan and the operation of disks;
    • after pressing the power button, the OS boot melody is heard;
    • if there are on / sleep indicators, they are lit with the corresponding light;
    • if you press Caps Lock, the corresponding indicator will light up.

In this case, you need to check the operation of the display in accordance with the instructions on the Apple website, or contact the service center.

Nutrition problems

Much more often it happens that the MacBook has stopped turning on due to power problems.

If the computer does not turn on, then here is a simple check algorithm that you need to perform:

    • is the computer plugged in? is the socket correct? this is easy to check.
    • Are the power cord and adapter connected? ordinary forgetfulness and a loose connection can be the cause of the lack of charge;
    • is everything ok with the power cord? if you have a spare or analog charger, it makes sense to try to charge the mac with it;
    • Are there any accessories connected to the computer (printer, storage device, phone)? turn them off and try pressing the power button again;
    • after pressing the power button, hold it for 10 seconds, then press it again.

If these simple steps did not help, you will have to understand in more detail why the computer is not working.

No power supply

Most often, the problem is very simple and lies precisely in nutrition. Malfunction of the socket, uninterruptible power supply, "pilot" happens most often.

To check this, it is enough to connect a known-good device to them, and it is best to just reboot the uninterruptible power supply. If you're using an extension cord, it's a good idea to try plugging the power cord directly into a wall outlet.

It is also worth remembering that the excessive use of extension cords, tees, surge protectors and additional pads increases the load on the home electrical network and can cause a short circuit.

Charging not working

Sometimes the reason lies in the charger. Kinks and pinches due to a strong bend of the wire or pressing it, for example, with a door, make the power cord unusable. The most vulnerable places: the bends of the cord, connecting to the adapter, at the plug.

If everything is intact during a visual inspection, it is worth trying to clean the connector from dust and at the same time check the integrity of the connector itself: bending or falling out of the plug means a complete malfunction of the power cord. It didn’t help either - it’s time to change the charger or to a service center, there it’s definitely possible to diagnose the cause of the breakdown.

The battery has failed

If the computer is several years old, it may not turn on due to the battery being depleted. battery - usually it has an indicator that should glow during charging - with a fully functional charge, it makes sense to check this.

By the way, there are prerequisites for a battery breakdown - too fast discharge lately, a discrepancy between the data of the charge indicator and the real time of operation, and so on. In this case, the only way to fix your Mac is to replace the used battery.

Reset parameters

An error in a special area of \u200b\u200bmemory or a controller can also prevent the Mac from turning on. The fix is simple, just a key combination and a reboot.

System Management Controller (SMC)

Sometimes the system management controller is to blame for the refusal to work, you can correct the situation by resetting its parameters. To do this, with the power cord connected, simultaneously press the combination "Shift" + "Control" + "Option" and the "Power" button. All buttons must be released at the same time.

In this case, the light on the adapter either continues to burn without blinking, or turns off - this is normal. After such a reboot, you can turn on the computer.

PRAM and NVRAM (whatevertheyare)

A special area of PRAM/NVRAM memory can also create an incompatible error.

What to do then?

    1. press the "power" button;
    1. press and hold the "command" + "option" + "p" + "r" buttons until the gray screen turns on;
    1. hold the buttons throughout the reboot and until the mac again emits a boot melody;
    1. release the buttons.

power manager

If an error occurs while powering on (non-safe shutdown, emergency shutdown, short circuit), Power Manager, which prevents the Mac from turning on, can also be restarted.

    • first take out the battery;
    • press the "power" button;
    • wait a couple of seconds, let go;
    • insert the battery back;
    • press the "Power" button again. The computer should start downloading.

Other reasons

There are a lot of reasons why the macbook does not turn on. This may be damage to the power circuit, and soldering of the board, or simply that it is clogged with dust and overheated. Even an incorrect shutdown can make the subsequent inclusion almost impossible. But usually everything is much simpler.

Separately, it must be said about the boot error after the update - while the macbook turns on, but only to a gray screen or a boot screen that does not end.

MacBook won't turn on after update

If the computer has not been updated for a long time, and then you had to install fresh upgrades to the old version of the OS, the macbook may not turn on or turn on, but not boot.

In this case, it is best to boot in safe mode - to do this, just turn on the Mac while holding the "Shift" button. Did not work out? Then you will have to format the data using a special utility, instructions for using it can be found on the official Apple website.

MacBook overheated

If the computer is already several years old or it is hot outside, then there is nothing surprising in the fact that it refuses to turn on. He probably overheated.

If the computer is new, just let it cool down. In no case should you apply cold objects to it or put it in a cold room for this, this can provoke the appearance of microcracks in the boards due to temperature changes. After a couple of hours at room temperature, you can try to start it again.

If he is at least a year old, it makes sense to take care of his cleaning. You can do this yourself, if you have the necessary skills, or in a service center. But while the computer is under warranty, you can disassemble it only in the warranty service, otherwise free maintenance will be impossible. Regular cleaning to prevent such problems is carried out at least once a year.

There are connected devices

An abundance of connected devices can be powered by the Mac's battery, preventing it from turning on. These are smartphones, tablets, external hard drives, flash drives, external Bluetooth modules, webcams, printers and other accessories.

There may also be errors in their work that affect the launch. Checking this is simple - turn off all unnecessary and start the computer.

Doing a forced reboot

If the computer gives at least some signs of life, you can try to force restart it.

To do this, when connecting Magsafe power, you need:

    1. press the combination "shiftt" + "control" + "option" / "alt" + "power".
    1. if it's an old mac then use "control" + "enter" combination.

Video: MacBook Repair

Faulty northbridge or southbridge

If the MacBook overheats regularly, then it may not turn on due to damage to the bridge - this is the controller on the motherboard. There are two of them, they are connected to the board by buses, and the northern one is still directly connected to the processor. Damage to any of them requires a mandatory service call.

Only the diagnosis of a specialist and the replacement of the affected part will help here.

RAM module incorrectly installed

If there was an OP upgrade before the problem, then the module may not have been installed correctly. To check this, just pull it out and insert it again, referring to the instructions. Did not help? Then return the old module, as the new one may be faulty or incompatible. After this replacement, the Mac should turn on.

The reason that the macbook does not turn on can be due to many problems. The best thing to do is find out what preceded the breakdown: an unsafe shutdown, a complete discharge, overheating, a physical breakdown, or flooding.

Even if outwardly everything was normal, it is better to ask your family or colleagues if they touched the computer, if there was a blackout, a strange smell. Depending on this, different recovery methods are used.

The only exception is mechanical damage and liquid ingress.

In this case, you should not try to solve the problem yourself, but it is best to remove the battery and take your Mac to a service center as soon as possible. Sometimes repairs may not be required - a simple cleaning may well return the MacBook to working condition.

Mac computers with the macOS operating system on board are the standard of reliability and performance, but even so, no one is immune from force majeure, due to which the operating system may not boot (an apple on the screen) or freeze at startup. In this article, we will talk about typical malfunctions and how to fix them.

Mac not booting up or freezing during macOS startup can be the result of three main reasons:

  • a problem related to the software or its update;
  • a problem related to the technical component (SSD, HDD, RAM, processor, mother memory, controller, and so on);
  • new hardware (should be disabled). The reason may even be a regular USB flash drive or USB key.

If the process of starting and loading macOS has begun, but freezes at certain stages, for example, on the "apple", then you need to go through all the points in order below the algorithm of actions.

1. If MacBook, iMac won't start due to (after) installing an update

Any Mac user updates the operating system on their computer from time to time. First of all, it's free, and besides, the next releases of macOS provide new features, speed up the device and better reveal its potential. But sometimes, after trying to update their operating system, users encounter the same problem - the classic “apple” is on the Macbook (iMac or other Apple computers) screen, and the operating system does not start loading. This problem is known, fortunately, it is not difficult to fix it.

2. Immediately after turning on or rebooting, hold down the key combination on the keyboard Command (⌘) + R.

3. Select the desired language from the menu that appears.

4. Sign in disk utility.

5. The disk will appear in the left part of the active window. It is usually called Macintosh HD. In the case of the problem we are fixing, the disk will not be mounted. Its name will be displayed in light gray.

6. To mount a disk in the top panel of disk utility there is a button " To plug". Click it and enter your password.

7. The name of the disc will be shown in the lower right corner, remember it. By default this is - disk2s1.

8. close disk utility and in the top menu bar open the tab " Utilities". Select an application from the list of utilities Terminal.

9. In the Terminal window, enter the following command:

ls -aOl "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Recovered Items"

instead of Macintosh HD, you must specify the name of your drive, if it is different.

10. The line “ No such file or directory».

11. Now you need to enter the second command:

diskutil apfs updatePreboot disk2s1

and press the Return (Enter) key.

parameter disk2s1 is the name of the disk by default. In your case, it may be different.

12. It remains to wait for the execution of the command. After that, restart your Mac, it should boot normally.

2. Disconnect all devices connected to your Mac and try restarting your computer

We talked about how to force restart any of the Mac computers.

3. Booting macOS in Safe Boot or Verbose mode

Safe Boot or simply "Safe Mode" allows you to run macOS with limited checks and functionality. That is, only the minimum that allows the system to function is launched. We perform all actions from a turned off Mac. In order to turn it off, just hold down the power button for 2-3 seconds.

macOS in mode safe boot starts a little slower (if it starts at all), so do not rush to the next step until you are sure that this does not work. To start your Mac in Safe Boot mode, simply turn on the computer while holding down the key ⇧Shift.

There is also an analogue of the Safe Boot mode - verbose mode. The difference is that the latter allows you to display all the detailed information about downloaded processes, software and drivers. To start your Mac in Verbose mode, start your Mac while holding down the keys Shift + Command + V (⇧ + ⌘ + V).

If your Mac starts in Safe Boot or Verbose mode, then you need to click on the  menu and restart the machine in normal mode. A successful download indicates that we are lucky.

If the Mac does not boot, then smoothly proceed to the next step.

4. We resort to the help of Disk Utility (Disk Utility)

Our guide is designed to weed out the most common and easy-to-fix causes of Mac failure first. At this stage, you need to make sure that the cause of the problem is not the inoperability of the hard drive or SSD, but the standard tool in the face of Disk Utility will help us with this.

Shut down your Mac from any hung state. launch Disk Utility by turning on the Mac while holding down the keys Command + R (⌘ + R). Here you will enter recovery mode.

In the list that appears macOS Utilities» select « disk utility” and press the button “ Continue».

In Disk Utility, select the hard drive in the left side menu and start the scan mode by clicking on the " First aid» at the top of the window.

After the end of the check, in case of detection of malfunctions, the utility will immediately offer to fix them or fix them automatically. After that, restart your Mac. If it does not help, then proceed to the next step.

None of us will doubt the reliability of the Macbook from Apple, because even the 2008 models still compete well with some modern laptops. Therefore, we can say with confidence that the Apple Macbook works without freezes and practically does not break, however, this does not mean that in some cases the laptop will always work like clockwork. Answers why the MacBook does not turn on, and I would like to reflect the ways of their solutions in this article for our readers.

Firstly, a signal that the Macbook is not loading may be the appearance on the computer screen of an icon in the form of a gray folder with a question mark. But for now, there should be no reason to panic, as the reliability of technology allows you to save your data before the computer is turned off. If we assume that a system failure did not occur, then, in spite of everything, all the information was necessarily saved in the internal memory of the device.

How to perform a factory reset on Macbook Pro and Macbook Air?

If your MacBook has experienced a slight freeze and you want to quickly restore all data without loss, then you need to perform an EFI memory reset. To do this, turn off the computer, and then, while holding down the Command P R Option buttons, launch the power key, while continuing to hold all the keys until the next system greeting appears on the computer screen. This maneuver will help you avoid system freezes and save data stored on your computer, as well as completely restore work on your Macbook. In the future, it is better to back up your computer data in the cloud storage in case of an unexpected failure.

If, after the operation, your MacBook Air does not boot up on its own again, check the condition of the hard drive, as well as the moment the HDD is connected to the motherboard.

Rescuing data when your MacBook freezes is one of the main tasks, so you need to know the procedure for doing which, your computer will be restored again along with all the data. But first you need to find out why such a freeze happened? Firstly, there could be a problem with the computer, namely: a memory failure, an error in the processor, a controller failure, and other reasons. Secondly, a breakdown can also occur with the operating system, for example, when it is updated to EI Capitan. Thirdly, the reason for the freeze may be the emergence of new connections that are not always compatible with the computer. In the latter case, you just need to disconnect all additional device connections from the USB ports.

To correctly determine the cause of the failure, you need to check the battery and make sure that it is not discharged or has not stopped working, because if the battery runs out during the update of the OS program on the Macbook, then the entire system will most likely freeze. So, it is worth considering several ways to fix the freezing problem on the computer.

Method 1: Safe Boot - Safe Boot Mode

First of all, use the security mode, in which the MacBook will only download verified content when it starts. To do this, deactivate the MacBook to then turn it on while holding down the "SHIFT" button. Such a launch of the MacBook takes a lot of time, however, you should not rush, because it is more important to download with the least loss.

If you have to carry out a more detailed download with a full clarification of the cause of the failure, then you need to boot your Macbook by holding several buttons: Command + Shift + V. This will give you the opportunity to start Safe Mode on your Macbook and see the details of running Verbose Mode, including the causes of problems.

What does verbose mode mean? Downloading Verbose Mode is a way to boot the operating system, in which specific information about the downloaded files of drivers, programs appears on the display and all the processes that occur in the system during the Macbook boot process are displayed in detail.

If after the above boot your computer can fully recover, then perform a standard reboot of the operating system. If this method did not help you solve the Macbook freezing problem, then in the future we recommend that you refer to the next method to solve the problem.

Method 2: Download via Disk Utility

It is clear that the MacBook may not turn on and freeze for various reasons. Assuming that this is not a hardware problem, but the hard drive is to blame, then it will not be difficult to check the cause if you run Disk Utility or Disk Utility on your MAC.

First you need to turn off your computer. If your Macbook displays a blue, gray or other color screen with a spinning boot button, then, unfortunately, you will have to turn off your MAC forcibly by holding down the computer start button for 5-8 seconds.

Next, to activate Disk Utility, you need to open recovery mode on your operating system. You can do this in the following way. Hold down two buttons at the same time Command and R and launch the power key. Upon successful login, you will be presented with a screen named MAC OS X Utilities. Now look for the Disk Utility icon on the open screen to activate it. Next, click on the name of your Mac's hard drive, which is on the screen to the left of Disk Utility. Next, start the check by activating the Verify Disk line and wait for it to finish. Finally, activate the verification process by clicking on the Repair Disk line. The next step is to restart your computer.

Method 3. Starting an external drive

Sometimes it's better to play it safe so that you end up in a situation where there is not a single backup copy of your data, and your computer freezes inappropriately. Even if you have repeatedly backed up data, but how do you get to them now? This problem was easily solved by your Apple Macbook, as you can use the special external disk mode - Target Disk Mode.

The sequence of actions to start an external disk consists of the following order. To get started, you will need an additional MAC computer for a short period of time. When the second computer is found, connect them using a certified Thunderbolt cable. The next step is to turn off your MacBook, and if necessary, hold down the Power button for a few seconds until the laptop can boot. After your computer starts to boot, immediately press the "T" key and hold it pressed until the Thunderbolt entry appears as an icon on your frozen color screen.

This starts the external drive mode. In fact, the laptop plays the role of an external drive, and not your usual computer. If everything was successful, then soon an external device will be displayed in the Finder - a new hard drive. Using this unusual convenience, you can copy and save all your necessary data before the computer is restored.

After everything is saved to an external hard drive, you will have to move it to the Finder, as you would with a real drive. Then unplug the Thunderbolt cable and start the laptop while holding down the Power button again.

Method 4: Restarting the operating system

When none of the methods gave positive results, and your MAC is still “hanging”, the last method remains - reinstalling OS X. To do everything according to the rules, you need to turn on the laptop in recovery mode and exactly repeat all the steps indicated in the option 2. In particular, we launch the Macbook with the R + Command buttons pressed.

After the operating system starts, find the line Reinstall OS X and, guided by the instructions that appear on the display, follow all the steps to restart the operating system.

If, after all the work done, your MAC does not start again, then, alas, the problem may be in the hardware and you need to contact the service center, as some parts are out of order, or the cable is broken. However, such a failure could also occur due to the replacement of the old and the connection of new equipment that is not compatible with your OS X. For example, if you put someone else's memory module on your MAC. Therefore, carry out repairs of your devices only in certified service centers and do not be fooled by cheap prices.
