The cheapest tablet from a Korean manufacturer

Against the background of the presentation of the giant Galaxy Note Pro 12.2, the new Tab Pro line, various wearable electronics and other advanced solutions, Samsung's entry into the ultra-budget tablet market went almost unnoticed. At the lower end, Koreans have been developing the Galaxy Tab line for a long time, but that doesn't seem to be enough. The incomes of modest Chinese manufacturers do not let them sleep well, and Samsung is trying to take its own piece of this pie with the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite.

If you are not discouraged by the fact that a TN-matrix is installed in a Samsung tablet, then the rest of the characteristics will hardly be able to scare you away. Everything is to a minimum, there is no front camera.

Design

We got the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite out of the box, so let's jump straight to the tablet design. In addition to the completely black solution, there are models on the market with a white front and multi-colored rear panels - blue-green, lemon, white and peach. But we received a strict black modification for testing.

The Galaxy Tab 3 Lite almost copies the regular Galaxy Tab 3, which is to be expected.

The front panel lacks both the camera lens and the brightness sensor. This would have made it possible to shorten the tablet, but the manufacturer chose not to waste time on this. All the same, the budget model, there is no need for additional costs. Nevertheless, the Tab 3 Lite is slightly smaller in width than the competitors from the table.

At the bottom there are three standard Samsung buttons - touch buttons for calling the context menu and returning, as well as mechanical for going to the main screen.

The plastic rear panel has non-marking and non-slip "leather" texturing, but it is not done as nicely as in the older models. There is also no "seam" along the edge. In the middle is the camera lens, and next to it is the speaker hole.

The center baffle of the speaker is slightly raised so that it does not rest against the surface of the table. The speaker implementation is perhaps one of the most significant external differences between the Tab 3 Lite and the original Galaxy Tab 3, which had two speakers, and they were placed on the lower edge. The maximum volume of the tablet speaker is below average, and it starts to wheeze.

The Micro-USB connector, which is usually at the bottom, is moved here to the upper edge, to the headphone jack. This is somewhat unusual.

Only the microphone remained at the bottom. In this case, it is not particularly useful, but in the 3G version of the tablet you can make calls, and such a logical, "telephone" location of the microphone will come in handy. But in the photos of the 3G modification, the front speaker is not observed, so it will be difficult to listen to the interlocutor.

On the left, a cover is used to cover the spring-loaded memory card slot.

On the right are mechanical buttons - a switch and a volume rocker. Despite their narrow size, they proved to be very comfortable due to their short and precise travel.

We were pleased with the build quality of the tablet. It's difficult to find fault with something: all the parts fit perfectly together, and when you try to bend, there is no creak. As for the aesthetic side of the issue ... the Korean manufacturer is not famous at all for the originality of the design, and it would hardly go to experiments in a budget model.

Screen

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects the anti-glare properties of the screen are worse than that of Google Nexus 7 (2013) (further we compare with it). For clarity, we present photographs in which a white surface is reflected in the off screens of both tablets (Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite is on the right, then they can be distinguished by the size and presence of on-screen buttons on the Nexus 7):

The gray screen surface of the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite confirms the above. The reflection in the screen is tripled, which implies the presence of an air gap between the surface of the matrix and the outer glass. On the outside of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (not very effective, worse than the Nexus 7), therefore, fingerprints are easier to remove and appear at a slower rate than in the case of conventional glass.

With manual brightness control, its maximum value was about 320 cd / m², and the minimum is 14 cd / m²... The maximum value is not very high and, given the poor anti-glare properties, the image on the screen will be difficult to see in bright daylight. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. There is no automatic brightness control by the light sensor. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flickering either.

This screen is set TN matrix... The micrograph demonstrates a typical TN structure (or rather, no structure) of subpixels:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of photomicrographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles in the vertical direction (hereinafter in portrait orientation), but with the slightest deviation to the right, dark shades are inverted, with a deviation to the left - light ones. For comparison, here are some pictures showing the same images on the Nexus 7 and the device under test, with the brightness of both screens set to about 200 cd / m². Test picture perpendicular to the screens:

It can be seen that the colors on the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite's screen are noticeably distorted. And white box:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone on both screens. The brightness of the white field decreases faster when tilted in any direction than in the Nexus 7. For example, when tilting to the right:

Now the test picture is at an angle of approximately 45 ° to the plane of the screen when deflected vertically:

It can be seen that the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite's screen has even slightly better color balance at this angle. The situation is worse when deviating to the left:

The blockage in the lights is very strong. And it's really bad when you deviate to the right:

Brightness drops dramatically, colors turn inside out. The black field when you deviate from the perpendicular to the screen in any direction is not very highlighted, for example, when you deviate to the right:

When viewed from a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the black field is imperfect, since there are areas with a slightly increased brightness of the black field:

Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is acceptable - about 730:1 ... The response time for the transition black-white-black is 12 ms (8 ms on + 4 ms off), the transition between gray tones of 25% and 75% (by the numerical value of the color) and back takes 36 ms in total. Compared to IPS used in mobile devices, this TN matrix is relatively fast. The gamma curve, plotted using 32 points at equal intervals in terms of the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal a blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.44, which is higher than the standard value of 2.2. At the same time, the real gamma curve deviates little from the power dependence:

Color gamut narrower than sRGB:

Apparently, the matrix filters mix the components together. The spectra confirm this:

This technique allows you to increase the brightness of the screen with the same energy consumption for the backlight. As a result, the colors of images - drawings, photographs and films - oriented to the sRGB space (and there are the overwhelming majority of them) have a reduced saturation. There is no balance of shades on the gray scale as such - the color temperature is higher than the standard 6500 K and varies greatly from shade to shade:

The deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) on the white field is large, and varies greatly from hue to hue, which also impairs the visual perception of the color balance:

The maximum brightness of this screen is low, anti-glare properties are weak, as a result, the comfort of use on a clear day on the street raises serious doubts. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. The advantages of the screen can only be counted no screen flickering... There are many drawbacks: typical for TN color and brightness distortions when the gaze deviates from the perpendicular to the screen plane, narrow color gamut, disgusting balance of gray shades. Inexpensive version of the screen on the TN-matrix.

Operating system

The operating system of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite practically does not differ from that installed on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 - the same Android 4.2.2 in the proprietary TouchWiz shell. The main difference is the appearance of the multi-window mode. In this case, up to two applications are supported, which is quite enough with the available screen size

In addition to the Play Market, there is a branded application store Samsung Apps. The list of preinstalled software is formed, respectively, by standard Google and Samsung applications. In addition, there are several third-party free programs. Content transfer via DLNA is supported. Under the agreement with Dropbox, 50 GB of cloud storage is provided for two years after activation.

It took us some time to get used to the Samsung on-screen keyboard, or rather, to its small buttons and large gaps between them:

The operating system works mostly smoothly, but the animation sometimes slows down, especially in the Play Market. Due to the lack of updates, the basic version of the firmware was used for the tests. It takes approximately 28 seconds for the tablet to turn on. Of the eight gigabytes of internal memory, the system takes up almost three, leaving the user about 5.13 GB. But the microSD slot is in place, so there is no disaster for a budget tablet without ambitions.

Platform and performance

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite uses the same single-chip system as the regular 7-inch Galaxy Tab 3 - the Marvell PXA986.

Its characteristics are as follows:

  • Central processing unit: 2 cores ARM Cortex-A9 (architecture ARMv7-A) with a maximum frequency of 1.2 GHz
  • GPU: Vivante GC1000 800 MHz
  • OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenVG 1.1 support
  • RAM: LPDDR2-SDRAM
  • Support 1080p video recording / playback, cameras up to 16MP

The Galaxy Tab 3 Lite has 1 GB of RAM. By modern standards, the number of cores and the frequency of their operation corresponds to the budget level. Unfortunately, this may not bring the battery life bonus as it uses Cortex-A9 cores rather than Cortex-A7. The graphics processor is also capable of disappointing, since Vivante solutions are not particularly popular on the market and, moreover, one of the basic modifications is installed here.

But first, we'll evaluate the CPU performance using JavaScript benchmarks:

It seems that Marvell's lag behind Mediatek in Mozilla Kraken is due to the difference in frequency, and the MT8125 does not receive any dividends from an additional pair of cores. SunSpider confirms this. Whatever one may say, the usefulness of multiple cores in mobile devices is in doubt. The superiority in Google Octane is due to the browser.

Compared to the other 7-inch tablets we tested, the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite looks very unconvincing. And the lag behind similarly priced solutions on budget Mediatek platforms is, on average, 30-40%. The result in Antutu X is almost the same:

MobileXPRT has confirmed the lagging behind the Marvell platform. Note the low score in the gallery scrolling subtest.

The budget Tab 3 Lite falls behind all the competitors, but when used, this difference is imperceptible:

The final non-gaming benchmark, SuperPi, comes with no surprises.

Let's move on to gaming benchmarks. The low expectations from the PXA988 were confirmed immediately: the Epic Citadel benchmark based on Unreal Engine 3 did not start.

In 3DMark Ice Storm, the Marvell-based system lags behind even the budget Mediatek. As for the GFXBenchmark T-Rex HD scene, it turned out to be too tough for our hero:

At the average quality level in Basemark X, our hero overtook the Ritmix tablet, which can be considered an achievement.

Gaming benchmarks prove the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite's failure as a gaming tablet. Let's check the performance of real games.

More than half of the games in our test suite had problems. Which is not surprising.

Video playback test

To test the output of video files on the screen of the device itself, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see "Methodology for testing video playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)"). Screenshots with a shutter speed of 1 s helped to determine the nature of the frame output of video files with various parameters: the resolution varied (1280 × 720 (720p) and 1920 × 1080 (1080p) pixels) and the frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 frames / with). In our tests, we used the MX Player video player in the "Hardware +" mode. The test results are summarized in the table:

OKNo 720 / 25pOKNo 720 / 24pOKNo

Note: If both columns Uniformity and Skips green ratings are set, this means that, most likely, when watching movies, artifacts caused by uneven alternation and skipping of frames will either not be visible at all, or their number and visibility will not affect the viewing comfort. Red marks indicate possible problems with the playback of the respective files.

Interframe (or group of frames) spacing is a bit irregular in most cases, 50fps and 60fps files are skipped, and 1080p 60fps files are not played at all. When playing video files with 720p or 1080p resolution and 16: 9 aspect ratio, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly on the wide border of the screen. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - all shades are displayed in shadows and highlights.

To decode AC3 tracks, MX Player uses the Hardware + codec. For demanding game scenarios, our hero, of course, is not suitable, but he copes with the video display normally.

Support for wireless networks

Here, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite's problems only grow. Perhaps they relate exclusively to the test instance, but it is worth taking note of them. The Wi-Fi receiver is very unstable in the tablet. Communication was constantly lost even at a distance of 3-4 meters of open space from a very powerful router with three external antennas. The problem was solved trivially - by placing the tablet close to the router. But even in this case, the connection did not always take place, the victim of which was the game N.O.V.A. 3.

In addition to the questionable single-band Wi-Fi 802.11b / g / n, the tablet supports Bluetooth version 4, as well as GPS / Glonass. Connecting to satellites in the open air takes a few minutes, and the connection is quickly lost indoors. The Galaxy Tab 3 Lite is deprived of the proprietary IrDA, which Samsung continues to install in its tablets. USB OTG mode was also unavailable.

Cameras

Not only the infrared port, but also the front camera fell under the reduction. The rear has a resolution of 2 megapixels. For this resolution, the picture is not so bad, but the lack of megapixels is clearly felt:

The captured text is legible almost over the entire area:

The maximum video resolution (video: MPEG-4 (Base Media), 2553 kbps, 640 × 480, 23.912 fps; audio: AAC (LC), 64 kbps, 48 kHz, 1ch) is the normal resolution of the front camera. In contrast to the number of pixels, the frame rate is good.

Autonomous work

We were only able to test the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite in read and video modes, as, as mentioned above, Epic Citadel did not work on the tablet. The battery test in GFXBenchmark could have been used, but it also turned off after a while after launch. A power saving mode is available in the tablet, but it only limits the maximum processor frequency (which is already low) and the screen power level (it seems, due to brightness), so the table shows the results with the power saving mode turned off.

The graph of the battery consumption readings is almost uniform, there are no sharp falls.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite does an excellent job of reading mode, outperforming its low-cost Cortex-A7 rivals. But when playing videos, the battery life is significantly reduced. Limiting the maximum frequency of the processor did not save the day: the difference was several minutes.

It took us almost five hours to fully charge the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite. A third-party adapter was used because the tablet came to us without accessories. Tab 3 Lite cannot charge from a computer.

conclusions

Samsung has saved on everything. Outdated single-chip system, low-quality speaker, lack of a front camera and infrared port, small battery capacity and internal memory, and most importantly, the TN matrix is not of the best quality. Today, for the same money, it is easy to buy much more interesting devices that are inferior to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite only in the knowledge of the manufacturer.

As you probably know, Samsung is the world's largest manufacturer of Android devices, and the second largest supplier of tablets to the global market after Apple. We have already had the opportunity to make sure that the tablets of the Korean manufacturer have very good capabilities and are among the best options when the question of buying an Android tablet arises.

If you are looking for a tablet that combines the convenience of a large screen device that 10 "devices give us and the compact size that is a hallmark of tablets with a 7" screen, then you have surely paid attention to the eight-inch tablets from Samsung. We introduced you to one of them, Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 in this review, and today I want to present you with a review of a cheaper one. Galaxy Tab 3 8.0.

And before we start looking at the merits and demerits of this tablet in detail, let's brush up on its key specs.

Design, materials and build quality

Like its more expensive sibling, the Galaxy Note 8.0, the Galaxy Tab 3 is virtually identical in design to Samsung's smartphones and looks like a noticeably grown Galaxy S4. It has a screen with the same aspect ratio, its body has the same metallic bezel at the ends, and even the location and shape of the navigation buttons on this tablet are the same as on the Galaxy S4.

Also, the body materials that Samsung uses in the production of the latest models of its smartphones and tablets are no different. The Galaxy Tab 3 is half a millimeter thinner than the Galaxy Note 8.0 and weighs in at the same weight as the more compact 7-inch tablets.

The back panel of the tablet is made of the same slippery plastic that Samsung has been using for a long time, so you probably know the main drawback of this solution - it perfectly collects your fingerprints, and in order for the tablet to look neat, you will have to regularly wipe not only its screen but also the back panel.

In addition, when running heavy applications and games, the slippery body of the tablet heats up noticeably, which does not add to its ease of use.

Otherwise, everything is fine. We did not notice any creaks or backlash between the elements of the case, they all fit together perfectly, the buttons respond adequately to pressing with excellent tactile feedback.

Despite the appearance, and the Galaxy Tab 3 looks quite elegant, the tablet leaves the impression of a soundly assembled and reliable device.

As for the controls, the tablet has a minimum of them. These are power buttons, a volume rocker, a mechanical Home button and two touch-sensitive navigation buttons located under the screen.

At the bottom of the tablet you will find a MicroUSB port, and stereo speakers are also located below. Some Android device makers have ditched the microSD card slot, but Samsung still equips its tablets with it. The lid that covers it looks flimsy enough, so you'll have to handle it carefully. At the top, there is traditionally a headset connector.

In general, the design is perfectly balanced, the tablet is comfortable enough to hold even with one hand. The only inconvenience that you may have is the navigation buttons located too close to the edge of the tablet, which are inconvenient to press when you hold it with both hands in a horizontal orientation.

Screen

A year ago, or even half a year ago, choosing a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels for an eight-inch screen would have seemed perfectly reasonable. Now, especially since the second generation Nexus 7 with 1920 x 1200 screen resolution, it seems to be insufficient.

Although I cannot say that the resolution of 1280 x 800 is bad. Let's not forget that a couple of years ago, screens of this resolution were used only in the flagship devices of leading manufacturers.

Traditionally, Samsung has used very high quality panels in the production of screens for its tablets, which have excellent color reproduction, brightness levels and viewing angles. The screen of our Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 was no exception in this regard.

Camera

I have always been of the opinion that a tablet is not the device that should be used for photo and video shooting, and I was cool about the technical parameters of the cameras used in these devices. Moreover, so far their matrices are far enough not only to camera matrices, but also to multi-megapixel matrices, which many manufacturers install in their smartphones.

And here the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is no exception. Its cameras (5MP rear and 1.3MP front) take pretty mediocre pictures. The qualities that the tablet's front camera provide is sufficient for video chatting, but pictures taken with the rear camera will suffer from noise and look washed out even in bright natural light.

Software

The Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 runs on Google's Android 4.2.2 operating system, which is hidden under the Samsung TouchWiz shell. Some smartphone and tablet owners love TouchWiz, and some don't. But, in fairness, it is worth noting that there are still more advantages in it than disadvantages. Owners of the Galaxy S4 will find on the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 almost all the proprietary "goodies", with the possible exception of the possibility of turning the tablet into a TV remote control due to the lack of an infrared transmitter in it.

You can change the number and order of the tables, flip through them and make all those familiar to us from the latest generations of Android Samsung devices. TouchWiz is pretty easy to use, and you won't find any terrible flaws in it.

However, it is not clear why the shortcuts in the app drawer are not sorted alphabetically by default, and this can sometimes be annoying, especially when the number of programs installed on the tablet exceeds three to four dozen.

Also, for some reason, the notification curtain, when you lower it, takes up the entire width of the screen, as it happens on smartphones, and not on tablets. The quick settings access panel seems a bit cluttered, as some of the shortcuts in it are duplicated at the top of the notification curtain.

Everything else, including a set of branded "smart" features, mostly evokes positive emotions. This is, for example, Smart Stay mode, which does not dim the screen backlight while you are looking at it. True, smart screen rotation, which chooses the optimal rotation of the screen (portrait or landscape) in accordance with the position of your head, works correctly in exactly half the cases, although the idea behind it is quite clever.

One of the great things that you will definitely love is the ability to run applications in multi-window mode. It is activated by a long press on the "Back" button, after which you can select the programs with which you would like to work at the same time on the pull-out side panel. Unfortunately, this feature only applies to a limited number of applications.

Voice control is activated with a double tap on the Home button, but this feature still requires serious work and does not compare with the capabilities of Google Now. And even worse, it causes a delay in the response of the Home button, since the system takes some time to wait for the second press to occur or not. However, at any time you can turn off the voice assistant S Voice.

Performance and battery life

The Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is powered by Samsung's own Exynos 4212 processor, which is a dual-core System-on-Chip that combines two ARM Cortex-A9 computing cores running at 1.5 GHz and an ARM Mali-400 MP4 GPU. This chip is paired with 1.5 GB of RAM. Both the first and the second, of course, are clearly not enough for a modern tablet, as you will see practically in the first minutes of using the tablet.

Theoretically, a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor with one and a half gigabytes of "RAM" should be enough to serve the operating system itself, but do not forget that the aforementioned TouchWiz shell consumes a lot of resources, which constantly "slows down" in one, then somewhere else.

Moreover, the regularity of the occurrence of these lags is quite difficult to detect. Moving between desktops is usually smooth, but sometimes the animation stumbles. The application bar seems to work smoothly, but sometimes you can notice delays here.

Changing the screen orientation on Android devices in the olden days caused a lot of criticism, but on modern devices we have practically forgotten about switching delays. You will occasionally shake the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 in the hopes of speeding up switching from one screen orientation to another.

How about tests? If you are interested, then in AnTuTu Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is gaining a little over 10,000 points, which, frankly, is far from the worst result, but do not forget that we are talking about a tablet, the price of which is noticeably higher than the average price for such devices.

But the battery life of this tablet will be a very pleasant surprise for many. Samsung has equipped it with a 4450 mAh battery, and the tablet processor coupled with the screen is quite economical in using up its charge. You should have no problem charging the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 every 2 days if you use it intensively on a daily basis. Unless, of course, you will not watch movies or play heavy games all day, and the brightness of the tablet screen will be set to "Auto" mode.

Conclusion

So what about the new Galaxy Tab 3 8.0? Personally, it seems to me that this tablet is not good enough for the role of a leader. If we compare it with the Apple iPad Mini (not taking into account the difference in operating systems), then the Samsung tablet wins both in its cost and in terms of equipment from its competitor.

But if we compare the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 with the seven-inch Google Nexus 7 of 2013, then our tablet is inferior to it in almost everything: price, screen resolution, speed and even form factor (although the form factor is a moot point).

Therefore, many will choose the Samsung tablet as a cheaper alternative to the iPad Mini, but for those who need an inexpensive compact but modern device, I would recommend taking a closer look at the new Nexus 7.

Samsung fans who can't get away from proprietary additions to the "pure" Android that is installed on Google tablets may choose the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 for this very reason. But is it worth it to overpay a significant enough amount? Personally, I'm not at all sure.

If this tablet cost even as much as the new Nexus, it would have a pretty bright future. In a nutshell, in my humble opinion, Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is a tablet for those who choose a friend not with their mind or wallet, but with their heart.

I use it only for the fifth day. Some delight, honestly. After the a10 pocketbook, which turned out to be weak and cumbersome, the samych seems miniature and powerful. The video player on the factory firmware plays everything (I have not tried 3D and FullHD, this is not its format)

This Samsung is as always good, but it is not for communication and for photos, but it has what it takes. Games all fly without lags, memory heaps (as anyone). Then I shoot and I can take good pictures with this device if I climb in the camera settings. So the tablet for games, the Internet via Wi fi and there is a remote control, which is very useful.

for a week of use until one got out, but what a! In a browser game (as for me, it's the simplest: pirate treasures (collect colored stones three in a row) the left side gets very hot in portrait orientation. For 5 minutes at least 50 degrees, it heats up, it feels very hot. And not hot. only the back cover, but also the screen).

I did not find any significant shortcomings. Of the little things - desktops and menus are a little unevenly scrolling, there are minor slowdowns in the browser.

After 3 weeks the GPS antenna died. Under the guarantee, they first reset a week to the factory settings and gave the same inoperative GPS, and after reproducing the service workers, they changed the antenna. So far, it seems to be working.
