Which is cooler - Samsung Galaxy S7 or A8? Samsung Galaxy S7 vs Galaxy S7 Edge: what's the difference and which is the best choice? Difference between samsung s7 and edge.

Apple's new iOS device, the iPhone 7, was officially announced at a recent event, and it naturally sparked the usual heated debate that surrounds any Apple device. It turned out that the smartphone is actually very similar to its predecessor, but that's not the point. We are eager to compare the smartphone with its largest competitor, the Samsung Galaxy S7.

We will try to find out the best aspects, compare them and draw conclusions about each of these flagship devices.

Galaxy S7 vs iPhone 7: Specifications

Galaxy S7 vs iPhone 7: Screen

If we compare the characteristics of both premium devices on paper, then the leader is definitely the Samsung Galaxy S7.

The South Korean manufacturer has equipped its device with an excellent 5.1-inch Super AMOLED screen, which is the best on the market. Apple's decision to keep the display the same size and resolution as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S doesn't bode well, even if it has a wider color range this time.

Yes, the 4.7-inch Retina HD on the iPhone 7 has 3D Touch support for a better user experience, but if you spend a little more, you get the Galaxy S7 Edge with a 5.5-inch curved screen on the sides.

Galaxy S7 vs iPhone 7: Cameras

Only the iPhone 7 Plus has a dual-lens main camera, while the iPhone 7 has a regular 12MP camera. It's 60% faster, 30% more energy efficient, and collects 50% more light than last year's iPhone 6S main camera lens. The 4.7-inch model now has optical image stabilization and a new four-LED flash.

As for the Galaxy S7, what else to say? With amazing low-light performance, optical image stabilization and sophisticated manual mode, this flagship has an incredibly good main camera module.

Galaxy S7 vs. iPhone 7: Processor, Memory, and Body Color Options

Samsung is supplying Russia with a Galaxy S7 model with an Exynos 8890 processor and 4 GB of RAM on board. The iPhone 7, meanwhile, has the A10 Fusion quad-core chipset, which is said to be 40% faster than its predecessor. The device is equipped with 2 GB of RAM.

Apple has finally gotten rid of the 16GB of user memory models. Now you get 32GB of storage as standard, which is what iPhone fans have been waiting for. The company also offers 128GB and 256GB of storage. The starter variant offers 32GB of storage on board, but it also has a slot for memory cards up to 200GB.

Both smartphones are available in four color options. Since the Galaxy S7 is covered in glass, any of the available colors have a glossy finish. In the case of the iPhone 7, you only get one variant that looks similar - “Jet Black”. By the way, this is polished and anodized aluminum, not glass.

Galaxy S7 vs iPhone 7: Price

The flagship from Apple in the basic modification will cost you 56,990 rubles, while its competitor from the South Korean company costs 50,000 rubles. The average iPhone model with 128 GB of internal memory is priced at 65,990 rubles, and the maximum one is 74,990 rubles.

conclusions

The new flagships from Samsung and Apple are more alike than ever. They are both waterproof, highly efficient, and offer incredibly good cameras.

The key difference, as has always been the case, is the operating system. The latest iOS update is the largest in the entire history of the platform. Apple has improved the user experience with a ton of new features.

Samsung has done a good job on the new version of the TouchWiz shell, and the Galaxy S7 is now significantly faster than its predecessors. It is expected to be updated to Android Nougat later this year or early next. Most likely, it will be possible to change the appearance of the icons separately from the theme, as on the Galaxy Note 7.

Unlike the S7, the seventh iPhone lacks a standard audio jack, but you can still plug in your old headphones, since Apple equips each smartphone with a special adapter. There are also Lightning headphones in the box with the device, and a wireless AirPods headset appeared in the company's accessories store.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 clearly outperforms its competitor in several areas: screen and cost. They both have excellent battery life and performance.

Which would you choose, Galaxy S7 or iPhone 7?

Comparison of flagships has already become a kind of tradition, especially since the choice in the upper price segment is limited by Apple and Samsung, other companies and their products only emphasize this, their sales do not reach even a couple of percent of what the two main brands sell on the smartphone market. Having explained why we are comparing these two brands, it's time to say why three devices are involved in the comparison and they formally belong to different generations. The difference in generations is due to the fact that between the release of devices from Samsung and Apple about half a year, that is, the iPhone 7 is the newest device on the market. If they came out at the same time, and then the comparison would be more interesting, since their sales would be synchronized in time, but this does not happen. The next generation Galaxy S8 will be released in February, while the iPhone 8 will have another full year. In my opinion, this question should worry pedants or those who have been using the Galaxy S7 / S7 EDGE for some time and want to see what they came up with in the iPhone 7 that is not in their devices.

Since the Galaxy S7 / S7 EDGE is actually the same phone, but with different screen sizes, at first glance, you need to compare with the iPhone 7 the younger model - the usual S7. They have comparable case sizes, while the S7 EDGE is noticeably larger, it rather plays against the iPhone 7 Plus. But in terms of cost, these models are comparable, since it is the S7 EDGE that costs about the same as the iPhone 7, and the S7 is cheaper. Therefore, in comparison, two devices from Samsung, since many people proceed not only and not so much from the screen size, but try to find the best option in terms of price / quality ratio.

Before moving on to the comparison, an important caveat must be made. This material deliberately does not assess the value of certain parameters, since we are all very different in our perception of the world and our needs. Someone thinks that a phone without wireless charging is yesterday, and does not even consider such devices, someone, on the contrary, considers it pampering and denies the need for such technology. This buyer's guide provides all the small and significant details, but you can already prioritize yourself by choosing what is best for you. Since each person is unique, your priorities will be very different from those of other readers, which means that your choice will be unique in many ways. Go!

Design, body materials, dimensions

All markers are different in taste and color, so it makes no sense to discuss the appearance of models, someone likes one thing, someone else. For example, Galaxy S7 EDGE is unique with beveled edges of the screen, no other company has analogues for such a solution, the phone can be recognized from afar, which is a rarity nowadays. But the downside of this appearance is that the ergonomics of the solution suffers a little, there are accidental presses on these edges of the screen, and not everyone will like it. To some extent, in S7 EDGE, this was a compromise.

Now a few words about the case materials - the iPhone uses an aluminum alloy, and these are not only the side edges, but also the entire rear surface, on which you can see the inserts for the antennas.

In Samsung, the back wall is made of glass, it is Corning Gorilla Glass 4. In fact, all Galaxy color solutions play in the light, shimmer, and this is the advantage of using glass. At the same time, unlike metal, they are easily soiled, and handprints easily remain on them. But in everyday life it is not annoying, not too noticeable.

Apple's response to this was the addition of the Jet Black color (in Russia it is called Black Onyx). It is a polished metal that is very close to Samsung's glass panels. Of the minuses, I note that it is exactly the same slurry, but also scratches easily, so Apple recommends using a protective case for it. Why do you need a beautiful case if you need to immediately hide it in a case? Do not know.

The metal chassis in the Galaxy is made of 7000 series aluminum, which means there is a certain parity here. Overall, in terms of materials used in construction, both the iPhone and the Galaxy are in the top league in the phone market, and are the best you can find.

Previously, the iPhone used sapphire crystal for the camera window and fingerprint sensor, which made scratches almost impossible. In the iPhone 7, the use of sapphire glass has been abandoned, and this is a disadvantage compared to previous generations. Many people have shown in practice that these glasses are scratched. Another thing is that it won't be easy to do it anyway. In Samsung, the camera glass is originally from Corning, it is difficult to scratch it, it is on par. But the fingerprint sensor is covered with plastic, and you use it dozens of times every day. As a result, within six months it wears out and begins to look untidy.

In the iPhone of previous generations, because of the sapphire, nothing like this has ever happened, what will happen with the iPhone 7 is not clear, but since there is glass, it is unlikely that it will come to a state similar to the sensor on the S7 / S7 EDGE. This is a weak point for Samsung.

Another weak point is the speaker grille in color schemes, where it is painted black. This grille has also peeled off, exposing the white metal.

And if on the iPhone we can say that the painting of the metal is excellent, and the abrasion even after two years looks like it is hardly noticeable, then in the Galaxy individual elements become a weak point. And this is a problem that spreads across several generations of devices.

Now a few words about the protective glass that covers the screen in these models. Samsung has historically used Corning Gorilla Glass to secure the supply of this key component for screens, and even bought a portion of Corning. Apple uses tempered mineral glass and no changes were made in the seventh generation. As a result, an iPhone that falls from the same height onto the asphalt or hard surface, such as from the belt, is usually shattered. Replacing a screen is one of the most expensive operations and is more likely to be done here than with a Galaxy. Therefore, if you feel or know that the likelihood of dropping the phone from your hands is high, you need to use protective cases, they save the devices, but spoil their appearance. With Samsung, this need is not as urgent as with the iPhone.

It's time to dwell on the size of the phones. There are many people in the world who believe that the smaller the phone, the better. They just don't need big screens, at least until they try them, after which it becomes impossible to return to the old small screens. But in terms of its compactness, the iPhone 7 is one of the best on the market. Its dimensions are 138.8x67.1x7.1 mm, weight is 138 grams. It fits perfectly in the hand, even too small for a man's hand.

The size of the Galaxy S7 is slightly larger, and this is despite the noticeably larger screen size (0.4 inches in life is a striking difference). The phone measures 142.4x69.6x7.9 mm and weighs 152 grams. But S7 EDGE belongs to the category of phablets, it is not so compact, although it is one of the smallest in its class - 150.9x72.6x7.7 mm, weight 157 grams. Note that the larger size and weight also correlates with the larger battery size in the Galaxy lineup (3000 and 3600 mAh respectively). In general, both phones are larger than the iPhone 7, but here you need to start from your habits. In my opinion, all models are convenient in everyday life, and the same iPhone 7 is too small for me with a screen.

Water and dust resistant

I specially highlighted this moment separately so that it does not get lost in the text. Previously, protection against water was only in flagships from Samsung, now this option has also been added to the iPhone. The iPhone 7 is IP67, while the Galaxy is IP68. Despite the difference, in everyday life it is important to know one thing that both the one and the other apparatus will not sink, especially if you quickly get them out of the water. And there, and there, the protection function is implemented well.

Display

In recent years, two trends have formed, some - the witnesses of Pentile - know for sure that on AMOLED screens with QHD resolution, their eyes see individual points, others laugh at them and call them human microscopes. The iPhone has always used high-quality IPS-matrices, which were higher than the market average, but the lag behind Samsung's AMOLED displays was clearly noticeable in a number of situations, for example, in bright sunlight. It was also affected by the fact that the screen size on the iPhone is smaller. From the point of view of the screen diagonal, nothing has changed, it is 4.7 inches versus 5.1 / 5.5 inches. But technologically, the screen in the iPhone 7 was greatly changed and pulled up to the level of AMOLED screens from Samsung, in practice this is an almost impossible task, nevertheless, the display supplier's engineers solved it for Apple. Moreover, it should be noted that a head-on comparison of screens will show that each has its own strengths and weaknesses, which follows from the very technology of their production. But for the first time in the history of the iPhone, its screen in terms of color rendering, behavior in the sun, correct color rendering, maximum brightness in the sun is close or comparable to Samsung AMOLED screens. There is parity between these products.

Traditionally, I want to refer to a detailed study of screens from Display Mate, in which those who wish can look at graphs, measurements, and the like.

All other things being equal, the difference remains both in the diagonal of the screen and in the resolution. In the iPhone, the resolution is traditionally lower, this is done to optimize the performance of the device - 1334x750 pixels, while in the S7 / S7 EDGE it is 2560x1440 pixels. It is clear that a higher resolution is better for most tasks, if it does not affect the runtime and performance of the solution.

Now there is one more thing that strongly distinguishes these devices. In Samsung, the use of an AMOLED screen allows you to create an AlwaysON function, information is constantly displayed on the display, such as hours, messages, calls. Or your wallpaper. That is, the phone turns from a dead black screen into something working. It is difficult to underestimate this feature, since your device looks always working, and this practically does not affect the battery.

Another option is to automatically adjust the backlight to suit your preferences. For the first two weeks, the phone evaluates how you use it, what kind of backlighting you prefer. And it adjusts itself specifically for you, it becomes clearly noticeable after a few days. It would seem a trifle, but this intelligent system allows you to achieve a lot.

I also want to note that the number of display settings is traditionally higher in Samsung, you can customize the device for yourself as comfortably as possible. The iPhone is much simpler, and there is no flexibility in settings.

Camera

This is another area that Apple used to be content with above average for most smartphones, but worse than Galaxy. For the seven, the camera was greatly redesigned, and plus or minus it became comparable to the current generation of Galaxy with one difference, the S7 / S7 EDGE is filmed a little better in the evening. Traditionally, there are no manual settings for the iPhone, the “point and shoot” interface, which is not suitable for everyone, since the automatic machine does not allow drawing complex compositions. But at the output, these devices are plus or minus comparable from the point of view of photography for the layman. If you don't need additional settings, just want to get your phone and take a picture, then both will be fine. If you want to be able to do a little more, then the iPhone won't let you learn.

I took a number of pictures with both devices and asked Roman Belykh to compare them. I have no idea who he will give preference to, but it doesn't matter. Both devices play in the same class, they are about the same.

Crops (Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE / Apple iPhone 7)

Comparison of photos of Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE and Apple iPhone 7 (Roman Belykh)

Day... Under normal or good lighting conditions (sun or bright day in the shade) smartphones show roughly the same picture in terms of detail. A nuance - processing software photography: Samsung produces the most "clean", noise-free frame, and Apple practically does not. Therefore, in the S7 Edge, all photos are slightly anti-aliased. By the way, algorithms work in a similar way on almost all Samsung devices, including S5 and S6. In addition, Samsung slightly overestimates the contrast, which makes the photos look more advantageous in miniature (on the phone, on Twitter, on Instagram). I don't really like it, however, "the taste and color" ...

Office Lighting / Home Lighting / Bar / Cafe... The first thing that catches your eye is the wrong white balance of the Galaxy S7 Edge, the colors become closer to warm. Sharpness is lost, a light "soap" appears. The picture on the iPhone 7 is also distorted, but it remains with the correct WB and pleasant colors. The image is slightly sharper and more contrasty.

Insufficient lighting conditions... As it seemed to me, in this test Samsung is far behind Apple:

  • Get a blur-free shot more often on iPhone 7
  • White balance is almost always more accurate on the iPhone 7, even if it is not quite accurate, it does not go into warm colors.
  • Sharpness is slightly better on iPhone 7, less "soap"

The biggest problem with the Galaxy S7 Edge is exposure and white balance. Typically, the photo becomes yellow and overexposed, that is, too light. The HDR Auto feature is likely to blame.

Macro... During the day, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge makes better macro: sharper and more pleasant bokeh. In poor lighting conditions, Samsung's advantages are a little lost, and Apple is "included" in the game with a slightly sharper picture. But overall - parity, both are good.

Total. I would put the Apple iPhone 7 first because of its wider dynamic range, better white balance performance, and less aggressive noise reduction in low light conditions.

Battery

It is impossible to compare the operating time of the devices head-on, you can only estimate how long they will last in the same tasks under more or less similar conditions. There are no miracles here, and the iPhone runs a little less time compared to the same S7. But most of the scenarios for its use are very different, for example, people do not use the maximum backlight, they limit the synchronization of applications. As a result, the iPhone 7 can show close battery life, up to one daylight hours.

Of the fat pluses of S7 / S7 EDGE, I would like to note fast charging, it allows you to get a quarter of the battery charge in ten minutes, which is very good. Built-in wireless charging allows you to recharge your phone in cafes and other places without wires. Here again we see the superiority of engineering in the Galaxy over the iPhone. There is simply nothing like this in the iPhone 7.

Performance and stereotypes

It is well known that the iPhone, and any, does not slow down, and Samsung with TouchWiz is a set of jambs and brakes. Unfortunately, with each version of iOS, the quality of the software on the iPhone leaves much to be desired, but TouchWiz, on the contrary, got rid of old sores and works stably and quickly. Both systems are approximately the same in perception, an ordinary person without a stopwatch in his hands will not see any difference. Fans, on the other hand, will foaming at the mouth to prove that their phone opens the application faster, and will even tell the exact difference, which will be a fraction of a second. But you just need to see how these devices work with your friends or in stores to form your opinion - how fast they are for you and whether you need to make them faster, and most importantly, why.

The amount of memory for your files

It happened, Apple made a basic version of a 32 GB smartphone, nevertheless, in 2016/2017, 16 GB of memory looked like a mockery. Now there is full parity here, since the S7 / S7 EDGE has the same memory capacity. But it is also possible to install a memory card, and the cards themselves can be any, the main thing is that they are inexpensive. If you do not want to install a memory card, you can install a second SIM-card, which has never been possible in the iPhone.

Special Notes

The iPhone 7 got rid of the 3.5 mm jack, now you need to listen to music through an adapter, which is completely inconvenient. Anyway, until you have acquired a large number of headphones with a proprietary Lightning connector. At the moment, this connector has no particular advantages. So here the win is on the side of the Galaxy S7 / S7 EDGE, at least for now for me, you may have a different perception of this feature.

Short afterword

I love competition. As iPhone sales began to decline, Apple revised its approach and strengthened the engineering of its smartphones. We installed better and more expensive screens, extended the quality of the camera to the level of Galaxy, added protection against water. And this is great! These products are now very close, offer almost the same feature set, and the Galaxy's advantages over the iPhone are diminished. But they are still saved, this is a large battery and, as a result, longer work in different modes, wireless and fast charging, the presence of memory cards, AlwaysOn screen mode. Unfortunately, there is nothing about the iPhone that can be called a unique feature in terms of hardware compared to the Galaxy. But maybe now Apple will try to do everything differently here?

I really like how the competition spurred Apple and made it to make a product at the level of Samsung, the iPhone 7 has become much closer to the Galaxy. This means that the choice has become more difficult for you. However, the difference in cost remains noticeable. So, in official deliveries, the iPhone 7 is sold from 57 thousand rubles, Galaxy S7 - from 50 thousand, S7 EDGE costs 60 thousand rubles. And on the gray market, the same S7 EDGE can be bought for 40-42 thousand rubles. In short, there is something to think about and what to choose. Please tell us in the comments what you like about both devices, or maybe you choose a completely different brand. Share why you made this choice.

Owners of an S7 smartphone from the South Korean giant should not rush to save money for a new generation device. Although, undoubtedly, with a practically bezelless display, it makes an incredible impression. But is it worth it to buy a smartphone for more than 50 thousand rubles solely because of the display? Or maybe it's not just the screen, but there are some other serious differences between the Galaxy S8 and S7? Now let's try to figure it out.

Differences in ergonomics or which is more convenient - Galaxy S7 or S8?

The appearance of the smartphone has not changed very much (and to be honest, in modern realities it is very difficult to create any very unique design), but at the same time, Samsung has tried to surprise us with several things in the new flagship S8, and I must admit, in to some extent it worked out.

Is the exclusive display the path to victory?

Comparing the appearance of the two "competitors", naturally, a person makes a choice in favor of the S8. Since we have not seen such a display previously from Samsung flagships. It catches the eye and looks truly unique.

The screen diagonal has increased from 5.1 inches (in the Galaxy S7) to 5.8 inches (in the S8) and 6.2 inches (in the S8 Plus).

By the way, remembering the S8 Plus, it is worth noting that we have already compared the two top devices presented by Samsung's mobile division in 2017 -.

To ensure that the display not only looks great, but also allows you to work comfortably with it, Samsung made it rounded at the edges, further reducing the width of the bezel both at the top and bottom.

To summarize, the display is indeed a strong feature of the Galaxy S8. Galaxy S7 against its background does not look so presentable and solid.

Moving the fingerprint sensor is a bold decision

Unlike the Galaxy S7, where the fingerprint scanner was embedded in the Home button and sited under the phone's screen, the Galaxy S8 experimented with putting the fingerprint sensor on the back of the smartphone. Yes, a similar operation was performed in order to enlarge the flagship display, while not greatly increasing its physical dimensions.

But how much more convenient has it become? Great question. Still, most users are accustomed to the "classic" location of the scanner on the front panel. And if we miss the scanner with our finger, we can smudge the camera of the device - also nothing good.

From the previous two points, we can conclude ...

Galaxy S7 - a leader in convenience

If the appearance of the device is beautiful, it does not mean at all that it will be comfortable to work with it. Still, the wide bezel of the S7's predecessor was much more comfortable. Since the smartphone could be safely held in the hand, being sure that our hand does not accidentally touch the display and does not perform any actions.

In addition, let's repeat about the fingerprint scanner. In S7, he really really is in his place. Even if the smartphone is lying on the surface, we can unlock it. The S8 has a scanner on the back of the panel, which makes it a must to hold it in your hand to unlock. But, in fairness, it is worth noting that the new product has an iris scanner - it can partially compensate for the inconvenience when unlocking the device.

Performance and specifications

It is clear that the Galaxy S8, compared to its predecessor, has become "faster, higher, stronger" - if it were otherwise, no one would understand Samsung. But how much? Let's compare the technical characteristics of these models.

Battery and run time

The battery has remained completely unchanged - both here and there its capacity is 3000 mAh. Of course, you can assume that the Galaxy S8 will last longer than the S7, due to the more energy efficient processor. But at the same time, in our opinion, the increased diagonal of the display will "eat up" this advantage.

Ports and connectors

The Galaxy S8 has the only change from the Samsung S7 - the MicroUSB charging and sync port has been replaced with a more high-tech USB Type-C. And of course, it's good that the 3.5 mm headphone jack hasn't gone anywhere.

Support for microSD memory cards is also available - you can always add "extra" 256 GB.

Camera

The S8 has an improved camera, but the improvements are more likely to occur at the software level. . Why hasn't there been a technical change in the 12MP camera? Unclear. Samsung has somehow not taken seriously the improvement of the camera. While the same Apple is installing dual cameras, trying to surpass all its developments, Samsung is just making minor improvements. We do not see any particular differences and innovations from the Galaxy S7.

Performance

A faster processor was installed - despite the fact that "megahertz and cores" increased slightly, the main difference is in the process technology.

  • Galaxy S7 is an 8-core, 64-bit, 14 nm process.
  • Galaxy S8 is an 8-core, 64-bit, 10 nm process.

It would seem that the difference is small, but sometimes it is the technical process (the size of the transistors on the processor crystal) that gives a greater performance gain than the insane increase in the number of cores.

Also Samsung S8 allows you to work with the latest mobile communication - gigabit LTE (cat. 16 versus cat. 9 in the Galaxy S7).

Memory - operational and permanent

In this case, practically nothing has changed - and that and that smartphone has 4 gigabytes of RAM (however, there will be a version of the Galaxy S8 for the Chinese market with 6 gigabytes).

Internal storage capacity: The Galaxy S8 is the only variant with 64GB of storage. The 32 gigabyte version, as it was in the S7, is no longer there.

What has been added or features of the Galaxy S8?

In fact, when compared to the Galaxy S7, in addition to the above, there are not many changes in the Galaxy S8:

  • The device initially runs Android 7.0.
  • Retinal identification added.
  • Bixby Voice Assistant -.
  • New Samsung Dex docking station and its full support (by connecting it to a monitor, you can turn your phone into a full-fledged computer).
  • The main "feature" - transferred the Samsung inscription from the front side to the back cover. It seemed to be a laugh and only, but many users were annoyed.
  • Price. At the “start” of sales, it became much higher.

The bottom line or what to choose?

If you use S7, and the huge screen does not attract you, we do not recommend buying a new product - you will not see anything in it that could cost fifty thousand rubles. Of course, there has been an upgrade that has made the S8 slightly better than its predecessor. The main "horse" of the novelty is the display, but not everyone is ready to give a lot of money for it.

If you're still thinking about buying an S8 or S7, here are a couple of tips:

  • For those who want to save money, we recommend taking the predecessor, since its price will drop after the release of the novelty to at least 30 thousand rubles. While the S8 in the first months after the start of sales will cost at least 55 thousand rubles. In terms of "price - quality", S7 is the undisputed leader.
  • For those who want everything at once - you can safely take the Galaxy S8. It is this smartphone that is currently the most advanced both aesthetically and technologically.

P.S. What's your opinion? Is the Galaxy S8 much better than its predecessor? Write in the comments!

You've probably already read a bunch of Samsung Galaxy S8 reviews and know literally everything about the smartphone. but how the Samsung Galaxy S8 differs from the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge? Is it worth spending 50 thousand rubles on a new flagship, or will you stay with the old one, saving a lot of money. Now I'll tell you everything.

Why am I comparing the new product with the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge?

Firstly, the Galaxy S7, although a top-end gadget, looks sluggish against the background of its curved brother. A matter of taste, of course, but the Edge has a special feature - a curved screen. And it takes the device to a different technical level.

Secondly, it is the S7 Edge and the regular S8 that are more or less close in size. The Plus version is quite healthy and it is logical to compare it with some Note. But there is no actual device from this line now.

However, what are the differences between Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S7 Edge? About this in today's review.

The convenience of use

I say right away - there is no clear leader here. Every smartphone has pros and cons. Let everyone decide for himself what is more important for him, but for now I will list all the nuances of using both devices.

Are you narrower or wider?

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Is a wide smartphone and it is a double-edged stick. On the one hand, the "edge" is not suitable for everyone, you need a wide enough palm to comfortably hold the device in your hand.

Against him Samsung Galaxy S8- a model from the category of fitness. It's slim and fits snugly in any hand. Perhaps even fans of the compact 4.7-inch iPhone 7 will appreciate the excellent ergonomics.

However, the wide Edge has one major advantage. In a standard keyboard, I type with almost no errors. The edge display is wider, the virtual buttons are larger, so it's easier to hit them.

To stuff characters on the S8 is a living hell for me!

The S8 not only has a narrower display, but also the rounded edges cut off part of the usable area. As a result, typing is a real torment. By the way, with the Google keyboard, the number of errors decreased, but the typing quality still left much to be desired. You need to get used to it. For a long time.

An eight is much more suitable for watching movies. All Hollywood films are displayed with little or no black bars at the top and bottom. And if you click on the zoom button, the player stretches the picture to rounded corners as well. Sheer delight!

Against this background, the S7 Edge looks like an old "Ruby" next to a plasma (S8).

Accidental taps on the S7 Edge screen are just killing me. And if you are lying in bed with your phone, then it is simply impossible to use it normally.

The S8 doesn't have such problems. No accidental clicks in any position. But why?

Firstly, the screen is not bent so much.

Secondly, some kind of software algorithms work that can cut off accidental clicks.

Well, the last difference. SG S7 Edge looks very cheerful even in 2017. Nice, curved and expensive design. And the SG S8 looks even cooler! Against this background, in general, all smartphones existing on the market are some kind of gramophones, hopelessly lagging behind by 3-4 years.

Frame

The S7 Edge has sharp side edges, slightly digging into the palm. The S8 has neatly rounded sides, so the feel is more pleasant. We write in a plus.

The rear camera practically does not protrude in the new product. This is good as the lens edging will not peel off. Although this is a moot point, time must be given.

The Eight is perceived to be thinner than its last year's competitor. And this despite the fact that it is actually thinner than the S7 Edge - by 0.7 mm!

At first I thought I would get used to it, but after three days of use, I realized that I would not. Every time you have to turn the smartphone over to see where the sensor is, and only then apply your finger.

Perhaps this is the biggest inconvenience after typing on a narrow screen. Both this and that will take some getting used to. You buy a phone for 55 thousand rubles and be so kind as to get used to it. Like this?

Moreover, I would not call the scanner fast and accurate. The finger must be applied vertically; in the horizontal position, it is not always possible to unlock the device. In terms of unlocking speed, there is also nothing outstanding here. Both generations of Samsungs are far from the record holder.

The S8 has an oleophobic coating on all sides. It is very high quality, no questions asked. But the "Edge" was lucky with this only from the front. Behind it is weak, prints are willingly collected here.

"Olephobic" is not only pleasant, it is also dangerous. Dropping the S8 is trivial. Moreover! If you put the device on an uneven and smooth surface, then it will slide off of it to meet the floor. You have to be very careful with this!

The seven have no such problems. Its body is more hooked.

Display

The difference is not only in the resolution (2960 x 1440 pixels versus 2560 x 1440 or Quad HD + versus Quad HD). The colors on the S8 are slightly softer, but at the same time slightly richer. All this is noticeable only when comparing head-to-head. Individually, both panels are excellent. Super AMOLED, if that.

If we compare the rendering of individual colors, then the S8 is already noticeably ahead of its predecessor. While the white of the S7 Edge has a slight metallic tone, the younger rival has nothing of the kind.

The S8 has only one caveat - at some angles it is very pink. Not always noticeable, but the problem still remains and software patches do not help yet. I don't think they will help either.

There is practically no inversion at extreme angles. A slight greenish tint appears in both devices (thanks to AMOLED), in the 7 it is a little more pronounced. However, this is not at all the same crime as it used to be.

There is no PenTile in any device. Samsung got rid of it in its displays back in the days of the S6, so those who fear ghosts from the past can relax.

The Edge sidebar hasn't changed in terms of functionality. We saw all the same in the seven. This is strange, because manufacturers often want to justify the purchase of a more recent device with new software chips. But not in this case.

Technical characteristics and differences in "hardware"

Compare the characteristics of both models in the table. This is clearer.

The new processor provides slightly more performance, but so far there is nowhere to use it. The situation is actually quite funny. Every year, hardware manufacturers raise the performance bar, and we don't see normal, cool games.

There is World of Tanks Blitz, a port represented by Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, a couple of 3D shooters, but there is no quality breakthrough. As many as 20 computing cores in the Mali-T71 graphics accelerator simply have nowhere to use.

The thing is cool and works well enough, but you need good lighting and a number of unnecessary gestures. That is, if the phone is lying on the table away from you, you need to get up every time and stick your face in the sensor's field of view, while still pressing some button to light up the screen. But why do we need so many unnecessary movements, when in the same "edge" a fingerprint sensor in front - stretched out a finger and you're done.

In general, the fingerprint scanner on the front side is convenient, aesthetically pleasing, harmonious and does not fill the figure. There is no need to invent anything.

Performance

It seems to be on the hands of two crazy flagships, but I would not say that interface animation always works reactively.

We set the maximum resolution for each and get subtle, but still present lags. How can this be on a phone for 55,000 rubles? How?!

S7 Edge on the latest Android 7 is generally sad. Every time after unlocking, I seemed to have lifted him out of bed at the wrong time, but forgot to wake him up. Well, sorry! The animation slows down, the lists are scrolled with a frieze. In general, this is not the case.

Want perfect smoothness? I recommend converting the resolution for the S7 Edge to FHD, and for the S8 to lower it to FHD + (2220 x 1080). Believe me, the maximum values in everyday life are not needed at all (only for VR). The picture looks perfect anyway. In addition, power consumption is reduced by at least one fifth, and this, believe me, is critical for both of our devices.

In order to test the gaming performance, I launched everyone's favorite "Tanks". There are practically no drawdowns in the new galaxy. Usually it is 58-60 FPS, but occasionally the frequency dropped to 54, no lower. S7 Edge can no longer boast of such power. In active scenes, the frequency drops to 31-34 FPS, but usually spins around 50 frames per second.

The situation in the benchmarks is as follows (on the left is the predecessor, on the right is a young and arrogant upstart "es-eight"):

By the way, the benchmarks are different depending on the resolution. Not sure why, but at HD + the results are the lowest.

And now the "parrots" that my "seven" can boast of. The lag in synthetics is on the face.

Main camera

The new generation of flagships is getting new sensors. How could it be otherwise?

So, Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 + come with either Sony IMX333 matrix or S5K2L2 from System LSI on the back. The predecessor could boast of either the Sony IMX260 module or the S5K2L1. The last option was installed in my "edge". And now to the point!

Daytime shooting

I peered at the photographs as best I could. As a result, I found practically no differences.

An exception is the temperature of flowers. The S7 Edge often makes the picture warm, while the S8 makes it colder. Below are examples. Left footage captured on the S7 Edge, right footage from the S8 camera - from now on.

I will not write it down as a plus for the S8, because you can always adjust the white balance manually and on the 7. Go ahead.

Macro

Here I expected to see deeper and better processing of photos from the S8 side: less noise, better detail, and so on. Did not work out.

It feels like I was comparing two photos from the same camera - no difference.

Bad light

This is where the fun should begin. At least that's what it seemed to me. I took several shots, compared them with each other, sprinkled them and ... did not find any differences.

Can you see anything? Me not.

Night

When there is plenty of light, many smartphones shoot well and are more or less identical. But night photography is a real challenge for any mobile device. And then the developers had to show all their skills in order to reduce noise, not turn the photo into watercolor, and so on.

And yes, it happened! Finally I found the differences. The S8 takes pictures a little more detail and with less noise.

True, the difference is so small that you can only notice it by comparing the cameras directly, with the same subjects and shooting conditions.

By the way, protective glasses on both smartphones glare. And these highlights end up in the photographs.

Frankly speaking, this is the first time I've noticed this on mobile devices.

By the way, we take the archive with all the originals at this link.

Front-camera

The front camera in the S8 has really been updated: autofocus has appeared and the resolution has grown: from 5 to 8 megapixels. All this economy is represented by a Sony IMX320 or ISOCELL S5K3H1 matrix - depending on the modification. At the same time, the S7 Edge comes with a 5-megapixel S5K4E6 module.

Of course, all this had a positive effect on the result. Now the photos have become more detailed, and the background has received a small, but still blur. Before, everything was in focus and there was not much creativity in this kind of photography.

There is also a minus - the G8's viewing angle has noticeably decreased.

Filming

In terms of filming, nothing has changed at all. Both smartphones still shoot in 4K resolution at 30fps and high bitrate 48Mbps. See example below.

Nothing interesting happened with the Slow Motion mode either. So far, there are only two devices on the market that pay special attention to this moment: (1080p at 120 FPS), and, which very seriously slows everything down - right up to 960 FPS.

Samsung S8 kindly agreed to give me David with Arstayl Youtube channel... Thank him for that!

As a result, the following conclusion was drawn.

If there are no problems with money, and you do not need to take out a loan in order to buy a new product in the person of S8, then this is what you need to take. There is a whole bunch of all sorts of improved little things, but there are also two significant advantages: unique for the market and very beautiful design, as well as improved ergonomics in comparison with the same "edge". All this is definitely worth it to overpay 15 thousand rubles.

If 50 thousand rubles (plus or minus) is a little expensive for you, but you still want a top-end gadget, then we do not bother ourselves. We take the Galaxy S7 Edge and enjoy life, since there is nothing truly revolutionary in the new product (except for the design). There is moisture protection, Samsung Pay works to its fullest, the cameras are identical in quality.

If you're not yet Samsung, the S7 Edge and S8 are two great reasons to get involved. And no, nobody paid me for advertising. It's just that the first smartphone is a chic option in 2017 to get an uncompromising device for relatively little money. And the second one is just a top-end top.

Personally, I only care about two competitors, about which little is known yet. The first one is HTC U11 and what's wrong with it. The smartphone should come to me in the next month, so there will be a review. The second device is OnePlus 5, which has not yet been announced. What if the legendary Chinese will be able to make a monster for 400-500 bucks? Then Samsung will have a worthy competitor for less money.

Pingback: RU Review: Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) Review - Like S8, Only Cheaper (Super G,

After the new flagship goes on sale, I certainly want to compare the Galaxy S8 with the Galaxy S7. Since we know all the technical characteristics of the iterations, we can compare them and find out how the Samsung Galaxy S8 differs from the S7.

The phone is already two years old, so a large number of users managed to touch and test it in "combat" conditions. Accordingly, there are many reviews, among which there are both positive and negative. Probably, we will start our review of the Samsung Galaxy S7 with reviews.

First, about the good. Users note that top-end hardware does not allow the smartphone to be loaded so much that lags or "brakes" appear in it. And even despite the rather high performance, even after two years, the battery charge with average use of the gadget is enough even for two days.

As for the appearance and ergonomics, this is almost the most common reason for a positive review. Users say that the smartphone fits comfortably in the hand and looks very stylish outwardly. Also, the advantages include many successful solutions of innovative technologies implemented in the phone - fast charging, Always On Display function, high screen resolution, payments directly from the smartphone. In general, there are more positive reviews of the phone than negative ones.

Now a little about the disadvantages. The frame of the case is made of soft metal, on which, in case of an unsuccessful fall, even from a low height, rather significant dents can form. Although the glass is advertised as being protected, it still remains scratched. Also, the glass on both sides of the smartphone is very easily soiled, leaving traces.

Interestingly, users sometimes refer to the shortcomings as low autonomy, that is, it is obvious that for people who actively use the smartphone to the fullest, the battery charge is clearly not enough. There are also infrequent failures with the fingerprint scanner. Also among the reviews of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, there is a common problem with AMOLED screens - display fading over time. Of the less significant trifles, we can note the insufficient quality of the front camera and the presence of unnecessary applications in the stock.

Design and construction of the Samsung Galaxy S7 with a photo of the model

Following fashion trends in screen sizes, the Galaxy S7 chose its ideal 5.1-inch diagonal. Many users liked it. It fits comfortably in either hand and is large enough for comfortable use.

Although both sides of the gadget are covered with glass, it does not slip out of your hands and lies confidently. The bezels are made of aluminum and contrast effectively with the color of the front and rear panels. There are three main colors available in Russia - golden, silver and black.

The design of the smartphone is made non-separable. That is, you will not be able to remove the battery yourself. The case is protected from moisture according to the IP68 standard. This means that it can be sunk to a shallow depth. The board and key contacts of the components are treated with a special compound that repels water, preventing it from accumulating inside. Inside, an overheating protection system is installed with a heat sink tube that runs through almost the entire structure of the smartphone, taking heat from the hottest components and giving it to other areas.

Samsung Galaxy S7 technical overview

The parameters of this smartphone, probably? the most interesting in this review. Let's take our time going through all and sort them out.

Processor type and memory parameters

Despite Samsung's refusal to work with Snapdragon processors, in some countries a version with the 820 model will still be released. A larger number of flagships will be equipped with a proprietary Exynos 8890 processor. Also, the company did not use foreign cores inside the processor and made its own. Exynos has 8: 4 of them? high-performance and 4? energy efficient. The former can operate at 2.3 GHz, and the latter at 1.6 GHz. The GPU is used by the Mali-T880 MP12. The supported memory type is LPDDR4.

Own memory in the gadget can be installed 32, 64 or 128 GB. The rejection of memory cards in previous models, apparently, was perceived negatively, so the ability to connect flash drives was returned to S7. The amount of RAM in the smartphone is 4 GB.

Display type and parameters

The Samsung S7 uses an AMOLED screen with a 2560 × 1440 resolution. An interesting novelty was the placement of the polarizing filter of the display at an angle of 45 °. What is it for? So that the screen can have the same degree of brightness when working with a smartphone in sunglasses, regardless of the orientation - portrait or landscape.

Pleases in the smartphone and the system of semi-automatic adjustment of the screen parameters. That is, each time a person adjusts all the parameters for himself, and the system eventually begins to recognize under what circumstances the user would like to use certain settings, and automatically activates them.

The Always-On technology was also innovative. It's amazing, but even a locked screen can constantly display some information - time, date, missed calls and SMS. And at the same time - in color. You can customize the screen to display a background or splash screen. Contrary to all concerns about the battery charge, Always-On, according to the test results, eats only 4-5% per day.

Battery

The guarantee of the autonomy of any device? it is not only the volume of the battery, but also a bunch of other factors - software optimization, the use of energy efficiency of electronic components. The Galaxy S7 has a 3000mAh battery. The duration of the work has another important factor - the use of the gadget by a specific user. One may not get out of the game, the other turns on the screen from time to time to send a couple of messages and read the news, and the third can use the smartphone just like a dialer. Therefore, the effectiveness of autonomy can be different for different people. In general, the charge should be enough for continuous video viewing for 15 hours.

An interesting solution turned out to be the fast wired charging function, which allows you to collect 100% of the battery within 1.5 hours. This is an excellent result, which not all even modern flagships can boast of. It is also worth noting the support for wireless charging in the smartphone, with two standards.

Samsung Galaxy S7 main and front camera specifications

As the main camera, the development of Sony IMX260, created specifically for Samsung, is used. Therefore, such a camera cannot be found in other devices.

The camera uses advanced autofocus, which uses 100% of the pixels of the matrix, according to the developers. This means that autofocus is very fast in almost all lighting conditions. In general, Samsung cameras have always been at their best. And Samsung Galaxy S7 was no exception - the photos are juicy and clear.

Software

At the time of the release of the Samsung S7, the current and stable version was Android 6.0. As a result, version 6.0.1 got into the gadget. The OS is optimized as much as possible and works quickly, without delays or crashes. There is also TouchWiz - Samsung's own development, which is a graphical interface for Android.

Perhaps someone will be interested in the innovation - the Galaxy Care app. This program can monitor the state of the hardware and software of the device, contains a knowledge base, frequently asked questions about working with the gadget, and also allows you to get support directly from the developers. The Galaxy Labs app is a kind of testing ground for Samsung's innovations. Here the user can enable and disable new features, as well as rate. The company analyzes information about this and decides whether to include the new functionality in the next assembly or abandon it.

It is also worth noting the presence on the smartphone of the ability to change the screen size for more convenient one-handed operation. You can resize individual windows, dialer, menu parts, etc.

The Always-On mode, which we talked about earlier, can also be customized. There are already predefined themes that affect not only the screen off, but also the system as a whole. Themes can be downloaded, further diversifying the appearance of the desktop and menus. Free developers may be interested in a separate SDK for creating their own themes.

Communication capabilities and interfaces Samsung Galaxy S7

The smartphone has the following interfaces: USB 2.0, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, NFC, S Beam. There is nothing special to mention about USB, a standard interface with a data transfer rate of 20 Mb / s. Wi-Fi is capable of working in modes up to ac standard. Wi-Fi Direct is intended to replace Bluetooth, which it successfully copes with. Now you can transfer data to neighboring devices directly, without intermediaries, at Wi-Fi speeds. S Beam is a combination of two related solutions - NFC and Wi-Fi Direct. In short, it allows you to transfer large files instantly.

Sensors and fingerprint scanner

There are just a bunch of sensors in this Samsung. Starting with an accelerometer and ending with a humidity sensor. Here is a detailed list:

  • accelerometer. Determines the position of the smartphone in space. Present in almost every modern phone;
  • gyroscope. It differs from the accelerometer only in that it can determine the angle of the phone's tilt relative to the ground;
  • magnetometer, aka digital compass;
  • barometer. Serves to determine atmospheric pressure;
  • light sensor. Measures the brightness of external lighting so that the smartphone can adjust the corresponding screen brightness;
  • proximity sensor. Reacts to the distance of the object to the smartphone to provide screen lock when talking;
  • pulse sensor;
  • humidity sensor. Reacts to moisture in the microUSB slot and blocks charging.

As for the fingerprint scanner, it is built into the "Home" button under the smartphone screen. To activate it, you must first "wake up" the device by pressing. It is noted that the button itself tends to leave scratches, which violates the readability of the finger.

Comparison of Samsung Galaxy S7 parameters with other Samsung smartphones

S7 in some way repeats the previous models, in some way inferior to subsequent flagships. For an objective picture, we need to compare it with other representatives of the Samsung Galaxy family of smart phones, find out how much the S7 itself costs.

Samsung Galaxy S7 vs. Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

As for the older model, the S7 is slightly inferior in some characteristics to the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. For example, the diagonal of its screen is 5.1 inches versus 5.5? from Edge. But many fans have rightfully appreciated the compactness of the smartphone. At the same time, the resolutions for both smartphones remain the same - 2560 × 1440. This means that the final pixel density will be higher for the S7.

Both gadgets have the same amount of RAM - 4 GB each. In general, the performance of the two models is exactly the same, since the same components are used. Edge, apparently, given that the screen of the model is larger and, therefore, will consume more energy, received a more powerful 3600 mAh battery. The difference in price between Samsung Galaxy S7 and Edge can be about 4,000-5,000 rubles.

Comparison of characteristics of Samsung Galaxy S7 versus other models

More interesting is the comparison of S7 with the previous version - S6. The screens of both gadgets are absolutely identical. Only S7 also has Always-On. The categories of 4G network standards differ slightly. S7 can work with 9 category, and S6 - 6.

For performance, both gadgets use Samsung's 8-core processors. The difference lies in the generations: does the S7 have an Exynos 8890, an S6? Exynos 7420 and also in frequencies. There is also a rather significant difference in moisture resistance: the S7 has an IP68 level, while the S6 does not. Also, the previous model loses in terms of the amount of RAM by 1 GB, that is, it has 3 in total.

Unfortunately, it is rather difficult to find S6 on sale now, so there is no actual data on its price.
