Apple iPad tablets. Apple iPads Regular Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Cellular

Several new products have been added to Apple's online store. In addition to the appearance, the iPad line has been updated. The iPad Air 2 is replaced by the new iPad with a 9.7-inch display. The company itself emphasizes that the new tablet demonstrates excellent performance, while it has a small but great display. We suggest evaluating the technical characteristics of the novelty. And, of course, we will tell you about the price and where and when you can buy a tablet.

The updated "tablet" has replaced the iPad Air 2 in the line of "Apple" tablets, which was announced by the corporation three years ago. It is noteworthy that the new 9.7-inch tablet is slightly thicker than the iPad Air 2 (7.5 mm versus 6.1 mm) and even heavier (469 grams versus 437 grams). Otherwise, it is practically a copy of the Air, only with an improved "filling" under the hood.

The new Apple iPad 9.7 (2017) is the fifth generation in Apple's tablet series. The design is no longer exciting, and many elements are borrowed from the iPad Air. But we still consider it to be one of the best tablets, especially the $ 330 (£ 18,800) price tag.

New Apple iPad 9.7 (2017) - Reviews

The Apple iPad 9.7 (2017) has everything that most users need - a durable battery, powerful processor, plenty of memory, regular updates, and a huge library of apps.

Apple has made little design changes to its new products. The 9.7-inch iPad 2017 is almost the same size as the iPad Air 2 - slightly thicker (7.5 mm) and heavier (469 grams), but still very thin and light.

The Apple logo is in the middle of the back, the camera is in the upper left corner, and the insert for the cellular module looks like a black or white stripe. On the front is a physical button that is more sensitive to pressure than on the iPhone 7. The screen is surrounded by wide bezels and a front-facing camera is located above it.

On the right side you will find the volume control buttons, at the top - the power button, at the bottom - the Lightning port with two speaker grilles. Sound is quite loud for movies or music, although not quite as good as on the iPad Pro with two additional speakers, it's still better than most tablets in this price range.

The 9.7-inch display of the Apple iPad 9.7 (2017) is ideal for watching videos. There is no antiglare coating like the iPad 2 Air, it is 25 percent brighter, and the image remains legible even in direct sunlight. The resolution is the same as on the iPad Pro (2048x1536), which is 2 times more expensive. The quality is not so high, which means that the tablet is not suitable for artists and other creative people who rely on color accuracy. However, it is sufficient for reading or watching movies.

The build quality is solid, although the screen is easily covered with fingerprints or dust.

System performance

The new Apple iPad 9.7 (2017) is equipped with an A9 processor, an M9 coprocessor and 2GB of RAM. During YouTube videos, social media visits, and demanding games like Injustice: Gods Among Us and Unkilled, performance was consistently high almost always.

Models are available with 32 GB or 128 GB of internal storage. 3D Touch is not supported. The home button has a built-in fingerprint scanner that allows you to quickly unlock your device.

IOS 10 has a wide range of optimized apps where screen usage plays a big role - something where Android tablets are lagging far behind. Multitasking gestures are supported, although they are not as comfortable as on the iPad Pro with its large 12.9-inch display. Split View and Slide Over functions are available, which allow you to use multiple applications at the same time. Performance occasionally sags when using Split View, but I have no problem sending emails, writing to Google Docs, and browsing the web.

Battery

The battery capacity is an impressive 8,610 mAh - which explains the thickness of the tablet. During a week of use with Wi-Fi turned on, the tablet was discharged to 40%. It should be borne in mind that with an LTE connection, the battery will drain faster.

An 8-megapixel camera with f / 2.4 aperture is located on the back, a 1.2-megapixel camera with f / 2.2 on the front. Both take photos with almost no lag, the back shows high quality and detail, but the iPhone will still be the best choice for shooting enthusiasts.

The front-facing shots are grainy due to the low resolution, although this is enough for use.

Outcome

The 9.7-inch Apple iPad (2017) is the tablet aimed at the majority. It can be used to watch videos, visit websites, play, or perform other moderately heavy tasks.

The Amazon Fire HD 8, Nvidia Shield K1, or Asus ZenPad 3S 10 are in the same price range, but they don't have that variety of apps. For an additional $ 270 (£ 15,400), you can get a 9.7-inch iPad Pro with 4 speakers, better display, great camera, Apple Pencil support, Smart Keyboard and more.

Apple releases updates regularly. Unlike most Android tablet manufacturers, you can count on support for over two years. Therefore, I strongly recommend the Apple iPad 9.7 (2017) - a tablet with excellent quality at a low price.

Positioning

It is impossible to believe that the tablet market is dead, but it looks alive only for those who have slept in a lethargic sleep for the last few years and missed the previous reincarnations of the iPad. The speed with which tablets disappeared from widespread sale and were replaced by smartphones with a large diagonal shows that the entire category was the caliph for an hour. On the other hand, for many tasks, the large screen of the tablet is much more convenient, I have games and occasionally watching movies. Moreover, the tablet has long turned into an exclusively home device, I don’t take it on trips with me, because I don’t see any point, the same games are launched on phones, and these are not iPhones, but Android smartphones with a large diagonal.

Somehow imperceptibly for the mass consumer, the need for tablets has disappeared, they have not become a vital device. It is desirable, sometimes people want it, but without it you can live peacefully. As a result, all manufacturers have calmed down their ambitions, and the development of this segment is very slow. Apple, of course, sets the tone here, since the iPad is, on the one hand, the most expensive device regardless of the specific model, but also the most popular. It so happened that, in fact, the iPad has no direct competitors today and is becoming the preferred choice for buyers. Samsung offers a large selection of tablets, but they are clearly inferior in terms of price / quality ratio, since they are released less often. As a result, these are just quite old models, although they have updated software.

I somehow did not work out with Android tablets, initially I use different versions of the iPad and I think that in terms of price / quality ratio this is the best device that can be purchased in 2018 or a year earlier. Since tablets are bought for a long time, it is worth assessing what exactly you need and what you are willing to fork out for. If you do not beat the tablet, then it can last five years or more, you will not know any special problems with it. Evaluate these devices within this time frame.

For those who not only consume information, but also create, for example, draws, iPad 9.7 now has stylus support, which can be considered a good addition to the basic functionality. But iPad 9.7 of the sixth generation is a budget model, that is, this device for minimal money, exactly the same position of its predecessor a year ago. This is a basic model with all the ensuing disadvantages compared to the same Pro line. As an iPad Pro 10.5 user, I will involuntarily compare these tablets to get a feel for what exactly you get in the older model. Let's get started.

Design, dimensions, controls

The design of the iPad 9.7 does not change from year to year, it is still the same metal case, the standard arrangement of elements (no, they did not refuse the 3.5 mm headphone or headset jack, Apple is not very consistent in this, and this is good for us). Look at the picture, it describes all the connectors.

What Apple says about the bottom stereo speakers is true, but it won't make you feel better. The iPad Pro has four speakers, and they create very clear, loud sound. In a budget iPad at maximum volume, the speakers sizzle, sound rude, no comparison. In games, I crank the speaker of this iPad up to 20 percent, otherwise the lack of clear sound annoys me. But again, for those who haven't heard Pro, everything will be fine.

The Home button, unlike the Pro version, is mechanical, it is pressed. This is a potential weak point of the tablet, since it is the buttons that usually break. On my Air 2, the button began to jam after 1.5 years, but it should be noted that the tablet was used by children and it was used mercilessly.

First generation fingerprint sensor, but it doesn't matter, fingerprint recognition is fast and without any difficulty.

The tablet is traditionally available in three colors.

I like the ergonomics of the device, and the main thing is that the body is metal, which is a big plus. My experience with different versions of the iPad says that their case is practically indestructible, but for several years they have been putting glass that is easily covered with cracks when dropped. It doesn't matter whether you have a case or not. This kind of compensation to shorten the lifespan of the tablet and get people to upgrade is a deliberate move. In the first month, I dropped the iPad Pro from the bed to the floor, the height is minimal, there is a soft rug below, but cracks have gone all over the screen, there are several of them across the entire display - they do not interfere with work, the finger does not touch them. Replacing the screen is an extremely expensive pleasure, it's easier to buy a new tablet when something interesting appears, but for now I use it like that.

Compared to the Pro, the budget iPad is slightly thicker, which makes it less comfortable, although the weight is exactly the same. But it is felt differently in the hands. But if you do not make a direct comparison, then you will not find any flaws. Tablet dimensions - 240x169.5x7.5 mm, weight - 469/478 grams (Wi-Fi / LTE).

In terms of dimensions, the tablet was made one-to-one like the previous model, in order to achieve compatibility of all old accessories. There are no differences here, and the same covers are perfect for the updated model.

You shouldn't look for a smart magnetic connector for an external keyboard cover on the case; it was left only for the Pro models. Therefore, if you want to type something on this tablet, then take care of buying a wireless keyboard, it is less convenient, since it requires a connection, consumes a charge, and you also need to remember to charge the keyboard itself. In short, this decision is not the most logical and pleasant one.

The delivery set has not changed, even the box is exactly the same as a year ago.

Note that the LTE version has a black insert at the top, which spoils the impression of the design somewhat.

For the overwhelming majority, the purchase of an LTE tablet seems to me to be in vain and even harmful, the Internet is easier to distribute from a mobile device on a trip, and why is it on a tablet? As mentioned above, most people only use tablets at home, so the choice of the Wi-Fi version is justified.

Of the little things that determine the design, I note the lack of lamination for the screen, that is, the frames around the display are clearly visible. This is a penny saving, and Apple could have decided something about this, but, apparently, they wanted to emphasize the budgetary component of this particular device.

Display

I will briefly list the characteristics of the screen: 9.7 inches, IPS, 2048x1536 pixels, 264 ppi, oleophobic coating, Apple Pencil support. Now let's understand the details of what is here and how. To begin with, the oleophobic coating is another saving item in the budget iPad, it is there, but the screen gets smudged almost instantly, unlike the Pro, where things are much better.

The budget iPad has a very simple light sensor, there is no support for True Tone, control of the color temperature of the screen and other modern things. This is frankly frustrating, as well as the fact that they did not add support for the P3 color profile (increased screen color gamut). In the same iPad Pro RGB light sensor, there is a P3 profile, True Tone. But the main difference that a person will see all the time is the lack of ProMotion technology, it increases the frame rate from 60 to 120 per second, and all movements on the screen become fast and smooth, the animation is very good. This is the first thing I noticed in the budget model, it is somewhat dull in comparison with the Pro. For those who are used to paying attention to microlags, as if noticing them, this moment will be painful.

What else have you saved on? The answer is obvious, there is no anti-glare layer like in Pro, the manufacturer does not expect you to work in the sun, or outdoors, or in rooms with many light sources. In short, keep in mind that the screen is very reflective.

The bottom line will say this - for a budget tablet (by Apple's standards) the screen is quite good, it has not changed compared to the previous year. Colorful colors, good to watch videos, but do not expect natural pictures, the color gamut is far from the best devices on the market. But the display is excellent in its class, and that says it all. The margin of brightness is sufficient, I usually set it to 70 percent, since it is no longer needed, eyesight gets tired. Automatic brightness control works fine, there are no complaints about it.

Support for the Apple Pencil or third-party stylus (available from Logitech) is a major change over the previous generation. Working with the stylus is not difficult, the only problem is to carry it separately, since it is impossible to attach it to the body.

Battery

Li-Pol battery, capacity 32.4 W * h, up to 10 hours of watching videos or surfing the Internet. Typical parameters for iPad, they are equal for different models, the manufacturer focuses on the same time. I did not notice any changes, everything is as usual. The full charging time of the tablet is about 4-4.5 hours, there was no fast charging either. This is a shame, since, after all, progress has gone ahead a long time ago, but it was not brought here. On the other hand, this is not so important for a home device, you will not carry it around with you everywhere.

Communication capabilities

A big plus is that Wi-Fi is dual band, it makes life easier, Bluetooth version 4.2, which is not important in this kind of device. In the LTE version, there is no voice communication, only data transmission. Also, both versions of the tablet support Apple Pay, but I doubt that many people will pay from such a device, this is inconvenient. Have you ever seen people paying with a tablet? Perhaps I was unlucky, but I have not yet met such.

Performance

There is a 4-core A10 processor, it is enough for the tablet's capabilities by the eyes, 2 GB of RAM, which is not bad by Apple's standards. In general, I have no complaints about how exactly the tablet works, everything is smooth, especially without comparison with the Pro. Fast enough for its class, the main thing is to remember that with the release of new versions of iOS, the device may become slow and it is better to avoid updates if possible (Air 2 turned into a slow machine after updates, although here everyone by eye determines what is better).

View the results of synthetic tests.

Camera

There is so much written on the Apple website about the main camera that it even feels like it is good and modern, let's read it together.

Unfortunately, the list of characteristics hides the fact that for 2018 the camera is, to put it mildly, mediocre. On the other hand, in a tablet it is not really needed. Look at the examples of pictures, you will understand everything yourself.

But the fact that the front camera is 1.2 megapixels and gives a very loose picture is much worse. After all, this camera is used for video calls, and it is much more important in such a device, but here they saved.

Impressions

The perception of the product always depends on your expectations, they were not too high for me, and I think that the budget iPad 2018 (6th generation) turned out to be good. Yes, it is far behind the iPad Pro 10.5, which will also receive an update by the end of the year, and the gap will become even wider. But for its price segment, this iPad is appropriate and still has no direct competitors.

The price in Russia is 24,990 rubles for the basic version of 32 GB ($ 329 plus taxes in the USA, the gray market and the request of friends to bring them become relevant), for the version with 128 GB they are already asking for 31,990 rubles. There is little point in buying a 128GB version for such a device, especially if you use it at home. But if you still buy for travel, then yes, you should focus on a larger amount of memory, it will definitely be more comfortable. Buying the LTE version is not worth it, this is a waste of money for the majority, however, here you can judge for yourself how much you need it.

If you are ready to fork out for good sound, a screen that is a cut above the picture quality, then you should take a closer look at the iPad Pro 10.5, but wait for the fall when it updates. But the price will be noticeably higher, these are products of different classes.

I have nothing to say about the Apple Pencil, it is an expensive accessory that most Pro users do not need, it will be in little demand in a budget iPad. It will be difficult to find people who cannot buy an iPad Pro, but are willing to fork out $ 100 for an Apple Pencil or spend half as much on an analog from Logitech.

There are virtually no direct competitors for the 2018 iPad. In the line from Samsung we see the more expensive and older Tab S3, although they are comparable in many characteristics, but this tablet is morally outdated. The updated A-series lineup will compete with the iPad, but it remains to wait for the announcement to compare them in detail. When this will happen is unknown.

The market for Android tablets is calm, and the only real alternative are models from Huawei, for example, the Huawei m5 (in regular and Pro versions). Unfortunately, the prices for Russia are still unknown, and therefore it is impossible to discuss how adequate they are as a direct competitor.

So it turns out that against the background of the inaction of others, the minimal cosmetic update of last year's model, which comes out at exactly the same cost, is quite successful. As a budget tablet when you need a big screen for years to come and at a relatively modest price point, this 2018 iPad looks like a good deal.
