The third generation of "tabs" came out in three faces. Senior and junior - in the classic ten- and seven-inch guises. Medium - in the less classic, but rapidly gaining momentum, the "eight" form factor. I mean, with an eight-inch display. More "square" than the seven-inch screen, which allows you to see more information, fell in love with users who want to have a small tablet since the days ... Well, you know the name of the popular tablet that delighted the world with its phenomenon last fall. Although it is quite possible to start counting from the Galaxy Tab 7.7, which was born even earlier and was one of the first eight-inch "tablets". Its descendant, Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, where 8.0 is the diagonal designation, got into our edition. This is him in the photo. And now - in more detail.

Video review

Design and construction

The line between tablets and smartphones is gradually blurring, largely due to the efforts of Samsung. It was this company that once created the first Samsung Galaxy Note, a 5.3-inch smartphone. This seemed to her not enough, and heavy artillery was used in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3. At the same time, small tablets are gradually overgrown with 3G support, not only for the Internet, but also for calls. All these words are a long preamble, leading to the fact that it is extremely difficult to take it right away and figure out what kind of device is in front of you. And if it is also a Samsung device that maintains uniformity in design ... And if it is also in the photo, but without anything nearby, it’s a disaster.

Together with 7- and 10-inch tablets

True, I would not call such a nice device a disaster: although the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 looks like a huge smartphone (most of all, like an overgrown Galaxy S4), for some reason it is in the eight-inch design that such a corporate design looks the most advantageous. Moreover, it is very thin, graceful, and 314 grams will not burden the bag too much. This weight was achieved thanks to the case material: the cover, traditionally for Samsung, is made of plastic. White, smooth, high quality and pleasant in appearance and touch.

The cover is not removable, the battery, respectively, too. The manufacturer defined the slots for the SIM-card and microSD on the left side, they are closed with usual plugs (fortunately, without a key-clip, which causes a lot of problems).

On the right side there is a power and volume control key, as well as an infrared port for using the tablet as a universal control panel. Above - an audio jack for a headset, below - microUSB and small stereo speakers. With a normal landscape grip, it is easy to overlap them with your fingers, this must be taken into account. True, their location is much better than it could have been: even today there are enough tablets with speakers on the "back": if not a surface, then some kind of cover overlaps them.

Display and ergonomics

Buttons for Android control are located under the screen and do not take away valuable millimeters of it. One of them is physical, two are sensory. Convenient and no frills. But still, it is already inconvenient to operate with one hand with such dimensions. Even if you have large palms, you will need both for active use of the tablet.

The screen with a resolution of 800x1280 pixels at eight inches does not amaze with its pixel density and the resulting whole picture, which can be observed on the Samsung Galaxy S4. Nevertheless, the grain is almost invisible, and this is definitely not worse than the direct competitor - Apple iPad Mini, and even slightly better (189 ppi for the Tab 3 versus 152 for the small apple tablet). The sensor of the tablet is very sensitive, it distinguishes up to 10 simultaneous clicks, the colors are subjective, pleasant, bright, but not "vyvyglazny", as is the case with Amoled. True, there is no black color, like in Amoled, here, therefore, the measured contrast is average, or slightly higher, amounted to 611: 1.

The screen is prone to coldish shades, but they can be somewhat "warmed" using the settings menu. There you can choose from dynamic, standard or cinematic mode. By the way, watching a movie on a tablet is pleasant, thanks to the 16:10 aspect ratio. Films can be watched in a small company in the sense that the viewing angles are wide. On a fine sunny day, you can read on the street, but watching a movie is no longer so comfortable. For viewing sites, it seems to me more pleasant format "quadratic" 4: 3 like ... well, you know who has it. Why? Websites don't look like narrow stripes. However, a user who is already accustomed to surfing the Internet from a smartphone will not perceive this as an inconvenience. Below we have given the graphs of measurements of the colorimeter.

System and performance

Responsible for the work and performance is a dual-core Exynos processor with a frequency of 1.5 GHz, along with Mali-400 MP graphics. They are helped by one and a half gigabytes of RAM and a 16-gigabyte drive. It's not that much, but since there is a microSD slot, I don't see a problem. The hardware is average, especially for a device with such a large screen, but it is quite enough for watching movies in FullHD-resolution and for 3D games. I had a chance to play Real Racing 3 and Dead Trigger on it. The tablet did not slow down, it is pleasant and comfortable to play on it: a large screen with a light body creates a good base for games with a motion sensor. The Android 4.2 Jellybean, TouchWiz interface worked smoothly, but when the memory was clogged in test modes, there were rare slowdowns.

The operating system and its "goodies" here are about the same as in all other Samsung devices in this price category. So, for example, there is face recognition: if you do not look at the screen, it goes out. And you can also set up gestures and slow down the player by closing the top of the screen, or take a screenshot by swiping the edge of your palm across the display (by the way, why? Is this function really necessary for an ordinary user?). Given the large diagonal, some multitasking user may appreciate the ability to work in two applications displayed on the screen at the same time. Well, let's say, watching a movie and checking your mail is convenient! I also really like the customizable Android 4.2 Jellybean dashboard that can be invoked by swiping up from the bottom.

Here you have access to the most important, for example, activating Wi-Fi or mute, as well as a bar screen brightness. You can use Tab 3 as a smartphone, but, as expected, it is inconvenient without a headset: the tube is too big. The interface of the smartphone is quite clear and usual here.

Camera

Five megapixels with autofocus, but no flash - for a tablet, in my opinion, this is enough for a head. Even with such a small mass, it is somewhat difficult to shoot from such a colossus. However, it can come in handy. Below are examples of snapshots and a video in 720p resolution, the highest possible for the Tab 3's built-in camera.

Cats consider filming with a tablet inappropriate and refuse to pose

Sound

The speakers are quite loud, in a quiet room you can watch a movie without using headphones. However, it is better to resort to the latter: the speakers are decent, they almost do not creak at maximum volume, in addition to the most dynamic moments, but the sound is poorly detailed and flat. But rubbing with a friend on Skype or watching a movie is possible. But in the headphones, the Galaxy Tab 3 turns into a full-fledged audio player with good sound. Only a very large one.

Autonomy, noise, heating

The eight-inch Tab 3 comes with a capacious 4450 mAh battery, which allows it to work for about two days without recharging in medium-active mode, but if you use the tablet actively, then it, like a regular smartphone, will have to be charged every evening. In Ukraine, Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 can be purchased for more than 3,000 hryvnia.

Competitors

Of course, there are not so many branded tablets in the eight-inch form factor. And the most obvious competitor is the close relative of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0. It looks less like a smartphone, that is, its frame is not so narrow, and it itself is not so thin and a little heavier than the Tab 3. But the Note 8 is equipped with an S-Pen and special applications for it. The hardware and screen of the siblings are similar, but the Note has a faster processor and more RAM. Well, another competitor, where can we go without it - Apple iPad Mini. It's a matter of personal preference, which one to choose, but if you want to use the tablet as a smartphone, then you are clearly not for the iPad. In addition, the market is full of 7-inch competitors, for example, the new Nexus 7 with 3G, which has a very attractive price.

In the dry residue

For some reason, it seems to me that it is the eight-inch Tab 3 that has the greatest chances of conquering the market among all the tablets of the family. Especially women should like it: it is small, lightweight, with a nice design and support for most modern Android features. And if something happens, a smartphone can be replaced. About 3 thousand hryvnia (12,000 rubles) - this is the price for the WiFi version of the tablet. For the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 with 3g, you will have to pay about 4 thousand-odd Ukrainian money, or about 16,000 Russian money. The price in the light of the slightly more expensive competitors seems very attractive.

3 reasons to buy the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0:

  • Slim and lightweight body;
  • good screen;
  • nice design.

1 reason not to buy the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0:

  • Not the longest battery life.

The number one Korean electronics manufacturer in the world (according to various estimates of the popularity of the released devices), Samsung is constantly working to improve and develop the models of its devices. As a result, many products released under this brand are conquering the market in one niche or another, becoming the most popular and famous gadgets. Of course, this also has a positive effect on the sales volumes that the manufacturer manages to achieve.

In order to more specifically show what one of the products of this brand is, we will conduct a small review of one of them. Meet the SM-T311 Tablet (also known as Tab 3 8.0). The device has a number of its own features, which it can boast to its potential buyer. We will talk about them, as well as about many other positive and negative aspects in this device, in this article.

Appearance

Of course, we'll start with its appearance. After all, it is with this criterion that we are faced every time we take this device in our hands. Immediately I would like to note that the device has a rather unsightly design, reminiscent of the appearance of similar models. However, the SM-T311 design makes such an impression on those who are not familiar with the device at all. In fact, there is a certain style in the appearance of the device. Take a glass screen that covers the entire front of the tablet, giving it a glossy sheen. The shiny back cover of the tablet has the same effect. It is made of plastic and has a similar texture to the front side of the tablet. On it we find only an inscription of the manufacturer of the device SM-T311 (Samsung) and a camera window, the characteristics and capabilities of which we will talk about in the future.

Due to the fact that the gadget has rounded edges, its entire body looks quite stylish, it is in perfect harmony with the glossy texture.

Navigation

With elements that allow you to navigate the capabilities and functionality of the device, everything is pretty standard here. The tablet has standard physical buttons "Menu", "Home" and "Back" located below the screen. They are equipped with additional illumination, which makes it possible to work with them in a dark room. Some users complain that the virtual shape of such buttons could be a more convenient solution for the company, since it would save space on the bottom of the phone.

In addition to these, it should also be mentioned about the painted "metal" buttons for turning on the device and adjusting the sound. They are located on the side faces. This is a standard scheme, which is complemented also for the exchange of information.

In general, we can say that Samsung made the control of the SM-T311 as classic as possible, so that users do not have to retrain to work with this model.

Display

By the name of the gadget Tab 3 8.0 SM-T311, it is immediately clear what kind of screen it has. We are talking about an 8-inch display that works on the basis of a matrix (PLS technology). The screen resolution, if you believe the technical parameters, is 1280 by 800 pixels. As the instruction describing the SM-T311 tablet notes, the image on the tablet display has a density of 189 dots per inch square. This, of course, is very small, if we talk about direct competitors like the Amazon Kindle or equipped with stronger matrices with FullHD-picture.

In this regard, of course, you can bet only on a non-standard screen size, because all these gadgets have a 7-inch display, but not 8. The 7.9-inch iPad mini is considered the closest to him in this case, but the level of prestige is here , of course, quite different.

However, the SM-T311 tablet, whose technical characteristics cannot be called the most outstanding, also boasts a high screen brightness. Due to its image, it appears more saturated and at the same time it turns out to be more adapted to work in bright sunlight or in a well-lit room. The content of the screen does not fade, but remains quite readable.

Performance

Describing how powerful our tablet SM-T311 is, the characteristics of which we have already begun to give earlier, its “heart” should be noted. This is the processor that "sets in motion" the entire operating system of the device. In this case, we are talking about Samsung Exymos - a dual-core processor, each clocked at 1.5 GHz. These are quite good numbers, giving good performance for the processor and graphics power. This is noted by both ordinary users and specialists. For example, in the rating table for the speed of processor interaction, the device we are describing has overtaken the Asus Transformer Prime TF201, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10, Samsung Galaxy Nexus and others. User reviews confirm this: the tablet works fast enough, while some freezes (even in the case of running more "demanding" software) are minimal here.

The SM-T311 RAM is slightly expanded (compared to the parameters of many similar devices). So, the developer installed 1.5 GB of RAM here so that the user can more freely open various applications without worrying about the stability of the work.

Autonomy

As the reviews describe, often tablets released under the Samsung brand have endurance problems. As the characteristics show, a battery was installed on the SM-T311, the capacity of which is 4450 mAh. With the help of this power supply, the capacity indicator of which, admittedly, is at a fairly high level, the tablet can work up to 11 hours, taking into account the fact that the user will be sitting on a WiFi network and watching videos.

The maximum load on the system gives 4 hours of work, after which the smartphone completely consumes its battery. This, again, is a good indicator considering the fact that we are talking about the work of a colorful, large display and serious iron "filling" on one device.

Operating system

As you might guess, the Android operating system (version 4.2.2) is installed on the tablet. It has a special graphical shell developed exclusively for Samsung devices. It has a standard appearance, but differs mainly in a set of additional functions. For example, such is the ability to restrict the output of information to the display of the device. The option is useful if you are driving and do not want unnecessary alerts to distract you from the road. Another example is the ability to display different active applications in two windows, changing their sizes. These options can actually make the tablet much easier to use in some situations.

So, first, let's take a look at the design of the Galaxy Tab 3. Samsung has greatly reduced the bezel around the display of the device. Thanks to this, nothing prevents you from looking at the display. And as soon as you get your hands on it, you will immediately see the difference between the 7 "and 8" screen. At first it seemed to us that the difference was very small (it's still only 1 inch). However, having a good feel for the tablet, we realized that this is not the case. We think the 8-inch display matches perfectly with the perfect thin bezels compared to the previous Tab 2. And you don't feel any discomfort while using the tablet - even this thin bezel protects you very well from accidental screen touches. We expect that many manufacturers will also improve their devices in the future in terms of bezels around the screen, which is a great trend in our opinion.

Now let's take a look at the front of the Galaxy Tab 3. First, of course, the 8-inch display immediately catches the eye. Secondly, as in all devices of the Galaxy line, this tablet has a physical "Home" button and a few more touch buttons. Also on the front of the tablet is an optional 1.3MP camera and proximity sensor. Only the microSD card slot can be found on the left side of the Galaxy Tab 3. Right: screen lock button, volume keys and infrared port. Top: 3.5mm audio output. Below we see a microUSB (MHL) port, 2 speakers and a microphone. Well, on the back of the tablet is, of course, a 5 megapixel camera.

Moving on to the interface overview.

The Galaxy Tab 3 tablet is still running on the Android 4.2.2 operating system. As usual, not without adding Samsung's TouchWiz Nature UX interface on top of the OS itself. TouchWiz Nature UX is already familiar to many from devices such as the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4 smartphones. This interface is quite easy to work with, and it is also convenient because all options can be quickly found thanks to the excellent "sorting". And in late 2013, the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 can be expected to receive an update to Android 4.3. This was announced by the company at the end of July this year.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 has received an excellent set of so-called "smart" functions. For example, the user will be able to open several windows at once, like on a PC, there are also Smart Stay and Smart Rotate functions. Well, at the head, of course, is the option of voice control of the device. These are the most basic unusual features that this tablet has received. Of course, Samsung could add a few more smart features, but that would increase the price of the tablet. In the future, along with updates for the Galaxy Tab 3, new options are expected to be added.

Despite the fact that the 8-inch Galaxy Tab 3 is not sold with a full set of all existing intellectual capabilities, Samsung has provided something specifically for users who often like to play toys, listen to music, watch movies, i.e. enjoy all the multimedia capabilities of the tablet. First, the device supports a variety of audio and video formats. However, the Galaxy Tab 3 lacks an FM radio. The company decided to remove radio support even during the production of the Galaxy S4 smartphone. she believes that many users prefer to listen to music through other streaming services, and radio only takes up production time and resources. In terms of memory, the internal memory is limited to 16 GB. 11 GB of memory is available for storing any information and data, and 5 GB is used by the operating system itself and applications. It's good that in the Galaxy Tab 3, in case of lack of internal memory, you can always use external storage media, in the form of microSD memory cards - their maximum volume should not exceed 64 GB.

Since the device received 1.5 GB of RAM, this allows the tablet to work quite quickly. For example, when the Galaxy Tab 3 is running, it uses only 675 MB of RAM, the user spends the rest of the RAM on applications, games, programs, etc.

Now I would like to take a closer look at the display of the Galaxy Tab 3. It is classified as a middle-class device, which means that the price of such gadgets is acceptable for users, even with an average or low income. However, the quality of the tablet does not suffer. One of the means of saving in production was working on reducing the viewing angles of the tablet screen and lowering the resolution (that is, they just saved on it). In general, the display is quite high-quality - 8-inch with a liquid crystal screen, while the pixel density is 189 ppi, and the resolution is only 1280 x 800 pixels. For the average user, the difference will not be very noticeable, but more "knowledgeable" buyers are unlikely to like such a low resolution for an 8-inch display.

On the other hand, all colors are rendered in a realistic and colorful way. And all thanks to the liquid crystal display. All in all, for its price, the screen is pretty good.

As we said earlier, the Galaxy Tab 3 has two cameras: a front camera and a rear camera. The resolution is 1.3 megapixels and 5 megapixels, respectively. Thanks to a 5 megapixel camera, the tablet is capable of recording high-definition video - with a resolution of 720p. And the maximum photo resolution is 2560 x 1920 pixels. Below we have presented you with photos that were taken with the main camera of the 8-inch Galaxy Tab 3 tablet:

As for the most important thing - the heart of the tablet, inside it is a dual-core processor from Samsung - Exynos with a clock frequency of 1.5 GHz. While we were working with this tablet, it worked pretty quickly, only sometimes there were some slowdowns. Of the entire Galaxy Tab line, the Tab 3 8.0 is the fastest.

While testing the tablet, we noticed that the battery life of the device is really decent. With active work with it, the Galaxy Tab 3 was able to last a whole day without recharging. Well, an ordinary user can work with it for about 3 days and forget what a charger is. All this is provided by a battery with a capacity of 4450 mAh.

In the end, I would like to say that this is an excellent tablet computer with a good affordable price. That being said, it is quite fast, with a high-quality LCD display, and 8 inches is the ideal size for a tablet, in our opinion. We discussed all these nuances the other day. It is not for nothing that it is called one of the most anticipated tablets of this year and is tipped to be hugely popular. Most likely, in September, the first users will be able to purchase an 8-inch Wi-Fi version of the Galaxy Tab 3 tablet computer.

I use it only for the fifth day. Some delight, honestly. After the a10 pocketbook, which turned out to be weak and cumbersome, the samych seems miniature and powerful. The video player on the factory firmware plays everything (I have not tried 3D and FullHD, this is not its format)

This Samsung is as always good, but it is not for communication and for photos, but it has what it takes. Games all fly without lags, memory heaps (as anyone). Then I shoot and I can take good pictures with this device if I climb in the camera settings. So the tablet for games, the Internet via Wi fi and there is a remote control, which is very useful.

Thin, light, good screen. - There are quite a few functional improvements from Samsung compared to the original Android (if you choose between the Nexus 7 2013).

for a week of use, one got out so far, but what a! In a browser game (as for me, it's the simplest: pirate treasures (collect colored stones three in a row) the left side gets very hot in portrait orientation. In 5 minutes degrees to 50 at least, it heats up, it feels very hot. And not hot. only the back cover, but also the screen).

Over time, it does not work as quickly as at the beginning of the purchase. But download the clean master, it will be better.

I did not find any significant shortcomings. Of the little things - desktops and menus are a little unevenly scrolling, there are minor slowdowns in the browser.

After 3 weeks the GPS antenna died. Under the guarantee, they first reset a week to the factory settings and gave the same inoperative GPS, and after reproducing the service workers, they changed the antenna. So far, it seems to be working.
