The dimensions of the iphone 5s are in centimeters. Smartphones have one or more front cameras of different designs - pop-up camera, PTZ camera, notch or hole in the display, camera under the display

Every year, Apple brings a golden autumn to its fans by introducing new iPhone models. Each subsequent device competes with its predecessor, outstripping it in digital standards, progressing in new mobile technologies, the quality of video and photo signals, optical innovations and, of course, external upgraded characteristics. Here we will tell you about the new technological standard in the market of mobile devices iPhone 5s - a new generation smartphone, the dignity and dream of many fans of Apple products.

Apple presented the iPhone 5S, which has established itself with high attributes, has become a powerful competitor in the mobile device market and is currently in demand due to its unique parameters and peculiar features that distinguish it from competitive models.

Compared to the previous model of the iPhone, the camera of the latest version is distinguished by reliable technical characteristics, solid quality of its references and excellent adaptability to the tasks of its owner. Frequent user question: what is the screen resolution and how many inches is the diagonal of the screen in the 5S model?

This time, the iPhone 5S screen with a Retina display, with a 4-inch diagonal and a fairly widescreen Multi-Touch, with developed IPS technology and LED backlighting, is presented. The features of the screen differ in pixel rates of 1136 × 640 and 326 pixels in inches at an aperture of 2.2. The camera contains 8 megapixels, which can display video in 1080p quality and demonstrates a speed of 30 frames / sec. Also, the screen is replete with functions of a light sensor, geotagging, hybrid infrared filters, automatic and manual focus, face recognition system, panorama mode and auto-stabilization.

Responsive sensor

In addition to the external data, the properties of the buttons have noticeably improved in the iPhone 5S. Their pressing is not as tight as before, but, say, more sensitive. Home button - Touch ID, sleep / wake button, silent mode lever and volume rocker feel more reliable and softer.

A large role in the fifth iPhone was played for the first time by a wired fingerprint sensor. Apple's first fingerprint scanner - Touch ID. With the emergence of a new technology for recognizing a user by fingerprint, the need to constantly enter complex passwords and codes, which, moreover, are constantly forgotten and lead to unpleasant problems for the user, disappeared.

Also, this scanner will help you unlock your smartphone and buy applications using one touch (your personal identifier). In addition, the screen is equipped with a gyroscope, accelerometer, ambient light and proximity sensors.

At the same time, the degree of data confidentiality increased as much as possible, since passwords were not always set due to the annoyingness of the event, and the finger scanner is a convenient and permanent thing that solves the problem of information security in seconds, and, moreover, it is not possible to fake or guess such a secrecy structure possible.

Custom surface

The iPhone 5S is equipped with the latest high-tech 64-bit Cyclone ARMv8 processor, which has a variety of instruction sets. The iOS A 7's performance and efficient architecture outperforms the previous Apple A6 in many ways.

In the iPhone 5S, the screen is covered with a glass plate, which has a perfectly smooth mirror surface with an anti-glare filter, which is especially noticeable and at the same time convenient when viewing photos or movies. The picture does not allow ghosting of objects, and the shadows of reflected objects are practically absent. This solution is achieved thanks to the gap provided by the developers between the matrix surface and the outer glass.

Manufacturers have been able to ensure that fingerprints are practically invisible, do not build up and can be removed quite simply. This progressive property arose after technologists applied a grease-repellent coating on the outside of the screen.

Good brightness

The brightness of the iPhone 5S screen, like all iPhone models, is adjustable from the maximum - 520 cd / m², to the minimum - 5 cd / m². This is done in manual mode and automatically controlled mode, adapting depending on the brightness of the ambient light. Therefore, even in bright sunlight, the screen picture retains excellent visibility and clarity, the texts remain easy to read, unlike other competing smartphone models. In the dark, the illumination of the screen reaches its maximum effect, therefore, for comfort and economy of the charge, you can lower it in manual mode.

The automatic brightness mode of the display on the iPhone 5S is provided by a built-in light sensor located on the left side of the front camera. Working in an office or in a shopping center, you will experience an approximate screen brightness of 200-280 cd / m², and in daylight without sunlight - twice as much - 500cd / m². However, in the dark or at night, the brightness may automatically drop to an uncomfortable 5 cd / m², so it is better to use manual brightness control at this time of day.

Excellent contrast

The improved high contrast of the screen in the iPhone fives is provided by a standard resolution of 800: 1, and the video reaches a ratio of 960: 1 with full support for the sRGB standard.

The efficiency of the 5S smartphone screen is provided by a clear IPS matrix. The wide viewing angle does not distort color tones, even when viewed from the side. The black field of the screen is fairly uniform and becomes bluish when the viewing angle is changed.

Summing up, we can say that this time the manufacturers were able to achieve its high performance, high contrast, excellent color reproduction, uniform clarity and stable brightness. In addition, the screen supports the simultaneous display of multiple languages and character sets. Compared to Apple iPhone 5, the screen has changed, becoming much brighter.

Photo and video quality

Testing the iPhone 5S has shown a screen refresh rate of up to 60Hz without glitching and stable frame rates. The brightness interval of the screen during video playback varies from 16 to 235 video files, the type of encoding is correctly determined, which contributes to the display of all gradations of shades, keeping black as black and white as white. The lens is equipped with a 3x video zoom. But there is one small drawback, which is the impossibility of displaying playback in 1: 1 scale of 720p video, which is quite explained by the small size of the device's screen itself.

With video playback, you can additionally capture high-quality HDR shots that showcase excellent sharpness and excellent wide and dynamic range. Standard face recognition software helps you create decent quality pictures.

The camera flash consists of white and yellow (for softness) LEDs. At the same time, it is superior in resolution, since the shutter speed is slowed down and the photosensitivity is lowered.

The flash operation is not a complaint when taking pictures. The camera shortens the shutter speed and lowers the light sensitivity during the production of the flash, due to which the resolution of pictures, especially panoramic ones, wins quite well.

Screen potential

The screen in the iPhone 5S model is equipped with a front and rear cameras. The front resolution is 1.2 megapixels, and accordingly the rear one is bold 8 megapixels. At the same time, taking into account the size of the screen, the resolution of the pictures will be stable at 3264 × 2448 pixels, keeping the sharpness quite decent from all sides. The camera is equipped with fast autofocus and OIS for HDR quality images.

The camera itself has a five-element lens and is equipped with a hybrid IR filter. The entrance window of the iPhone camera is protected by a sapphire crystal insert. And the built-in photo sensor of the smartphone is made using the well-known Backside illumination technology.

Summing up, it can be noted that adjusting the focus of the camera in the 5S model has two types: touch and automatic. At the same time, shooting in panoramic or burst shooting, or even in slow motion, the camera easily finds and recognizes the faces of the subjects. And, if desired, captures, linking photos and filmed videos from your location. In addition, the iPhone 5S is equipped with an F / 2.2 aperture with dual flash, compared to the iPhone 5C and iPhone 4S, which only received an F / 2.4 aperture and a single LED flash.

What is better compared to the iPhone 5: better coating (paint does not fly off by itself), the camera works fine in the dark, the A7 processor, TouchID appeared, there is a gold-colored device, there is LTE support for Russia (so far in theory). Should I buy? Yes, if you're used to switching to a new iPhone every year.

Design, construction

It was very interesting for me to see what happens to the device if it is carried without covers or films - I want to remind you that the paint literally sprinkled with the iPhone 5, in the operating experience this was described in detail. Mostly the ends suffered, on the back the coating was preserved. The results of the experiment are as follows, the coating has improved, the dark gray iPhone 5S, even if carried in a pocket with keys and other objects, does not lose its shape - I will not take into account the barely noticeable abrasions on sharp edges, this is not scary. The main thing is that the coating does not fall off in pieces and this is very pleasing. There are small scratches on the display protection, there is nothing on the fingerprint sensor, but dust accumulates around the edges - this does not affect the sensor's performance. Scratches appear both on the plastic plugs on the back and on the apple. Otherwise, there are no complaints, after the iPhone 5 this is just a gift - especially considering the fact that I myself do not use accessories for protection. And there is only one reason, I don't like the iPhone getting bigger. Even a couple of millimeters. At the time of the appearance of the device, many again began to speak the usual words - they say, all manufacturers have huge smartphones, now is the time for five-inch displays, why does Apple do this! Criticism, criticism, criticism.

In fact, sales confirm a simple fact, there will always be several million users in the world who are quite satisfied with such a screen diagonal. And the diagonal of the display is closely related to the dimensions of the device, but the dimensions are 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm, the weight is 112 grams. A miniature bar fits in any pocket, fits well in the hand, the materials are familiar, metal, glass. The shape has been familiar to everyone for a long time, Apple used the same "body", the changes are minimal, the square has been removed from the Home button, the flash looks different, the device seems heavier to many, but the weight has not changed either. Three options, silver, dark gray and gold, the latest unisex, will suit both men and women, I personally like it, but it's a little embarrassing to walk with it - then you need a complete set, a gold watch, a bracelet, a chain and everything else. I would like to note that the dark gray color (the brand name is "Space Gray") is very good, now the iPad Air is out, soon there will be an iPad mini with Retina, also dark gray, this is a very interesting alternative to black. Immediately I want to note that the iPhone 5S, like other iPhones, starting from the very first, are slowly but surely killing the luxury smartphone market. Now it’s a little embarrassing to spend five hundred thousand on Vertu, because Vertu has Android inside, and this OS does not agree well with the beautiful design, materials and a special message for the user. While the iPhone 5S has everything in order with this, hardware and software are closely related (as always with Apple), high-quality materials are adjacent to interesting technologies - we are talking about the fingerprint sensor, and about the new processor, and about the upgraded camera, which is capable of great work in poor lighting conditions. It's not even about spending money on Vertu, it's about another - why waste time on Android. And Vertu with iOS will never be.

I personally like all this, Apple has created something like a "Colt", equating an advanced user who poked around Symbian with a housewife who does not want to understand anything. You need programs - go to the store, you want to buy music - go to the store or download from a torrent, if you want to customize something - go to settings or hack iOS and rejoice. The main thing is that all this is one device, one operating system, a kind of universal language, very convenient. And by the way, there are more and more words of their own, for sure iOS users will agree with me - we are already used to iMessage, some actively use FaceTime, iCloud helps to store everything that needs to be stored in the cloud, now here's another word, AirDrop. Only it is surprising why nothing can be sent to a laptop in this way (we are talking about "MacBooks"). In addition to words, there are familiar gestures, slide the screen to unlock, from top to bottom - a notification panel appears, now also from bottom to top with additional buttons. All controls remained in their places, the power button on top, the volume buttons on the side, and the mute lever in the same place. 3.5mm jack at the bottom, near perforation, Lightning connector. On the right is the SIM card tray, nanoSIM is used. The speaker is very loud for a miniature smartphone, the call signal is perfectly audible - only I just can't come to terms with the new melodies in iOS7, it seems that this is a sabotage on the part of Samsung. Some kind of polyphony from the nineties, the only signal I liked is called "Slow uphill". The rest is terrible, although you can use the classic signals if you want, they were left.

I'll tell you more about the Touch ID sensor below, I just want to note one thing, many familiar iPhone 5S users try to press harder than the button in the iPhone 5, for reliability - do not overdo it, friends. Although I noticed this for myself. It seems that if you use force, then everything will work out for sure. Naturally, the pressing force does not matter.

I cannot say that the device heats up very much, the back part is sometimes warm (maybe too warm), this happens during games (talking about Infinity Blade and the like).

Touch ID

After the first power-on and various formalities, such as entering the Apple ID, you are asked to set a fingerprint, for a right-handed person, this is most likely the thumb of the right hand. You put your finger on the sensor, the picture shows how the system recognizes the pattern: you apply, release, apply again, then it is suggested to apply not a pad, but the tip of your finger, with a slight twist. Imagine the movement while pressing the button, just like that. Then the system remembers your fingerprint, you are prompted to enter a password in case the fingerprint is not recognized. Naturally, all other fingerprints can be saved for added convenience. The sensor settings are located in the "Basic / Password and Fingerprint" menu, to work with this menu you need to enter a password (paranoia). Here you can turn off the sensor, change the password, select a simple or complex password, add or remove a fingerprint. And during the purchase in the iTunes / App Store, you can also use fingerprints, although here you have to enter your password, put your finger down, plus or minus the same time.

The most important question I'm asked is how fast is scanning? Look, the device is locked, you press the button with your thumb, release it, it is unlocked and you go to the home screen. Without any Slide to unlock. I am not a supporter of protection, I have nothing to hide, but this thing works very well and saves time - no need to press the power button, no need to drag your finger across the display once more. By the way, in the locked state, you can switch tracks in the player, start the camera - all this is available without entering a password, but when you want to go to the home screen, you will find yourself on the lock screen, you need to enter a password or scan a fingerprint. That is, you can give someone a shot, listen to music, use a calculator or a flashlight, but the person will not be able to go further.

I think that we will see Touch ID in other products of the company, for Apple the device in question is largely a test site, this also applies to the fingerprint sensor and the A7 processor. At the same time, Touch ID may well get into not only the iPad (this will surely happen), but also into laptops. Apparently, the company has taken a course towards the comprehensive protection of user data, you yourself understand, there is one more aim - in corporations they will be very happy with such opportunities, and it is high time to get rid of Blackberry.

Many people say that all this is not new, it was all, but history repeats itself, as with many other notions of Apple. Everyone remembers FaceTime and the howl of some special part of the Internet community about the lack of innovation. Apple simply makes familiar or existing technologies more convenient, simpler and more necessary (keyword) for ordinary people, and not for mythical special agents - many have such associations when they talk about fingerprint scanning. In iPhone 5S, it takes a split second, allows you to instantly unlock the device, saves time, and gives you a completely unique level of data protection - without having to come up with complex passwords, draw pattern keys, unlock your smartphone using the front camera, and so on.

Display

This is Retina, a display diagonal of 4 inches, a resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels, there is an oleophobic coating, with active use, it can be killed in two to three months. The familiar display from the iPhone 5, is good from any angle, which cannot be said about the displays of some other smartphones (hello Sony). The brightness is great, but the colors here are eye-catching, like in the Samsung Galaxy, everything is calmer. I especially like the contrast, clarity, I wrote about the diagonal of the display above - if you need five inches, you are ready to put up with the size, then it is better to buy Samsung or Sony. I'm not talking about big smartphones like the Sony Xperia Z Ultra.

Naturally, such a display is not quite suitable for some tasks. For example, when browsing websites, you have to constantly zoom, when you read for a long time in iBooks your eyes get tired, beautiful toys are better left for the iPad, and chess is put on the iPhone. There are no problems with typing on the keyboard, in iOS 7 it is good.

LTE

My iPhone 5S model number is like this, A1457, I tried it with a MegaFon SIM card, no LTE, it doesn't work with an MTS SIM card either. You already know all this very well, Apple does not allow the use of LTE in Russia, you can talk about the reasons for a long time, but the fact remains - according to rumors, everything should work at the end of November (according to other rumors, by the end of the year). I also want to note that all this is not so important. Another thing is interesting, thanks to SMI, now even schoolgirls know about the iPhone 5S and LTE - and everyone is discussing, and everyone is indignant, but this problem did not bother anyone before. For example, some people generally believe that the iPhone 5S / 5C are the first devices in Russia with LTE, as if there were no Sony devices and others.

I want to remind you that there are several modifications of the iPhone 5S, here they are:

  • Model A1533 (GSM): UMTS / HSPA + / DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM / EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 13, 17, 19, 20, 25)
  • Model A1533 (CDMA): CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B (800, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz); UMTS / HSPA + / DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM / EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 13, 17, 19, 20, 25)
  • Model A1453: CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Rev B. (800, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz); UMTS / HSPA + / DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM / EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26)
  • Model A1457: UMTS / HSPA + / DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM / EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (bands 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20)
  • Model A1530: UMTS / HSPA + / DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM / EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); FDD-LTE (bands 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20); TD-LTE (bands 38, 39, 40)

There is no need to bring models with CDMA to Russia - you will laugh, but there were letters from readers and readers who bought such models in the USA.

Memory

Three versions, 16, 32 and 64 GB, let me remind you that if you take a lot of pictures, shoot videos, then it is better to pay for the top version, but then you will not have to constantly upload content to your computer. If you only call, use several programs, the 16 GB version is quite enough, no matter how they convince you otherwise, sellers love to do such nonsense. I recently heard in a store how a man in years old a consultant hung noodles on his ears, they say, the more memory, the faster the iPhone will work, so take 64 GB! Do not believe it! The speed does not increase!

Operating system

I use iOS 7 (or rather, 7.0.3), it makes me a little angry that after each update you need to enter your ID and so on. It's clear that the company cares about security, but when updates come out almost a couple of times a month, it infuriates. I think everyone is already used to the G7, and I'm used to it too. Although “Music” is annoying, the covers are confused there, the logic of setting the repeat is incomprehensible - there is a repeat of a song in the menu, then a repeat of an artist, for some reason they made the point not to repeat. It is clear that if you have not selected repeat, then you do not need to repeat anything. Rewinding inside a track enrages very much, the slider is small, you can't grab it, plus it sometimes moves the way he needs, and not you. This is especially noticeable on the locked screen. Sometimes it is impossible to answer a call the first time and it enrages that in the locked state there is only a green answer slider, and there is no red hang-up slider. Clearly, you can press the shutdown button, but why didn't you make one menu for both a locked and an unlocked smartphone? Some of the programs have not yet been properly updated by the creators and they work clumsily, the notification menu is completely non-functional and stupid. Moving wallpapers can cause epileptic seizures and it's a shame that this strange 3D can't be turned off. Some things are not made obvious, for example, my friend tried to select functions in the camera by clicking on the labels above the button, although there you can simply slide your finger across the display from left to right.

Well, that's nitpicking, overall iOS 7 on the iPhone 5S is pretty good. Fonts, indicators, the most convenient email client and browser, instant access to app and music stores, a nice calendar, a voice recorder, wonderful notes. You can continue for a long time. You can read more in the review. Well, in the comments you can tell what makes you angry.

By the way, about mail - many people think that it is not as functional here as in Android. It is not true. Here you can add several accounts, open attachments of different types: .jpg, .tiff, .gif (images); .doc and.docx (Microsoft Word); .htm and .html (web pages); .key (Keynote); .numbers (Numbers); .pages (Pages); .pdf (View and Adobe Acrobat); .ppt and .pptx (Microsoft PowerPoint) .txt (text); .rtf (formatted text); .vcf (contact information); .xls and .xlsx (Microsoft Excel); .zip; .ics. Convenient labeling, search, if there are phrases like "see you tomorrow at 20.00" then they are highlighted and you can immediately create an event. The main thing is that for some reason, in any smartphone with Android, two clients are installed at once, one for Gmail, the other for other accounts, this logic is also incomprehensible to me - there is no such nonsense in iOS.

Performance

With the help of GeekBench 3 I measured the performance, let me remind you that the iPhone 5 got 1636 points, but the iPhone 4S had 634. The iPhone 5S got 2555 points (multi-core score).

An A7 processor with 64-bit architecture is used, an M7 coprocessor, a typical bundle for the company's mobile devices at the end of 2013 (except for 5C), the same scheme for the iPad Air and the new mini, it may well be that A7 will also appear in the updated iPod Touch ... The difference in performance will be noticeable only for those who have used the iPhone 5 for a long time, I am silent about the users of the iPhone 4S - it will seem to them that the 5S is reactive. Compared to the "five", the difference is visible when starting and running familiar programs, Google Maps, mail, browser work a little faster, but this "a little faster" adds up to seconds, minutes, hours. Overall, the iPhone 5S is a very fast smartphone.

With Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (profile 4.0), everything is clear, everything works fine - Wi-Fi 802.11a / b / g / n (802.11n in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands). There were no problems connecting to access points. Let me remind you that AirDrop uses Bluetooth, so don't be surprised if you notice that it works for you after the first turn on.

Camera

Probably, Sony will show a smartphone with a thirty-megapixel camera in winter, full size, a lot of settings and ringing marketing words - the only thing left to do is to achieve the same picture quality as the iPhone 5S. The resolution here will surprise no one, 8 megapixels, the lens is covered with a sapphire glass, next to the flash there is a light sensor, a “five-lens lens”, as it is written on the official website, but the technical characteristics do not matter here. The main thing is that you have in your hands quite a decent camera that can compete with a bunch of digital cameras. I use the 5S in my life, and for solving some work tasks, for Instagram, and for capturing text - since the iPhone 4 cameras in Apple smartphones are getting better and better, the iPhone 5S is no exception. I will try to briefly explain why this is so, literally on my fingers. Firstly, the camera of the iPhone 5S has improved detail, clarity, and a larger viewing angle, compared to the iPhone 5, this is very noticeable, especially if you look at the photo on a computer. We will soon be preparing a comparison of current smartphones, we will show everything there, for now, take my word for it. Secondly, the iPhone 5S shoots perfectly at dusk, at night, where the iPhone 5 simply cannot cope, nothing is visible on the screen, there the iPhone 5S gives a good result. Thirdly, there appeared a slow motion mode, Slo-mo, a wonderful thing for pampering, I have a lot of such videos, but here many people have a question of how to send such a video to Instagram or other services. Let me remind you that if you send it as is, then the slow-motion section will be shown as a regular video. You can use programs like TrueSloMo, but if you are not afraid of losing quality, you can just send yourself a video by mail. Here are examples of such videos.

Finally, iOS 7 introduced a 1 x 1 shooting mode, square photos, like in Instagram, you can apply various effects - by the way, the same effects can be used with normal shooting. Naturally, there is both automatic and manual focusing, pressing the display sets the desired point.

Video recording in HD, videos look great on a smartphone screen, and on a laptop too. For example, here's a video about a display defect in the iPhone 5S, it happens, yes.

In general, the iPhone 5S's camera has gotten better, and the difference is noticeable - especially when it comes to shooting in the evening. By the way, we improved the HDR mode, I would recommend using it. The flash also behaves more appropriately than in the iPhone 5, although I almost always keep it off.

There is nothing special to say about the front camera, FaceTime works, the faces of friends are very large (in the photo, Dembovsky sends you his regards).

Working hours

The claimed battery life is up to 10 hours of talk time, 250 hours of standby time, 10 hours of video playback, 40 hours of music playback. Not bad, but with heavy use, calls, Wi-Fi, camera use, and many apps can drain quickly. That is, at nine in the morning you left the house, by four o'clock you need to look for a charge. In quiet mode, the device quietly lives up to late evening. For example, if you have twenty percent left and turn down the brightness (leave a quarter or even a little less), turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, close all sorts of programs, then you can still read the book for several hours.

Pay also attention to notifications. For example, Easy Ten constantly gives reminders about new words, word repetitions, the screen is activated, the battery runs out. It is also typical for Twitter and other social networks.

Sound quality

Some readers asked me to compare the sound quality of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S, I did it, I used EarPods, Bose QC-20 and Bowers & Wilkins P7 headphones. There is practically no difference, the volume level is the same, maybe the 5S has a slightly richer sound, but on the whole it is very similar. Separately, it must be said that the iPhone 5S is one of the best on the smartphone market in terms of playback quality, the Sony Xperia Z1 has a quieter sound, and not so interesting, the SGS4 has no volume (although it can be achieved with different tricks). In addition, in the bundle with the iPhone 5S you will immediately find wonderful EarPods headphones, which is already pleasant in itself - there are few such examples on the market, I will note only the Sony Xperia Z / ZL, others have such headsets that I want to cry. These are typefaces where the letter "p" can be changed to "b" and that would be the exact definition.

conclusions

I also want to note that in my device the proximity sensor sometimes behaves inadequately, if you also have problems, write in the comments. If you remove the smartphone from your ear during a conversation, the screen is activated with a delay, sometimes you even have to press the Home button. There are no complaints about the quality of speech transmission, there is a connection quality, I tried different SIM cards, but the same Sony Xperia Z1 behaves better - when talking on the iPhone 5S, you constantly expect the connection to be interrupted. Maybe this is paranoia since the days of the iPhone 4, maybe really the problems with the antenna have not been completely resolved. I will give here a little more TX, they are usually forgotten about:

  • Operating temperature: 0 to 35 ° C
  • Storage temperature: -20 to 45 ° C
  • Relative humidity: 5% to 95% non-condensing
  • Maximum altitude during operation: 3000 m

It is not recommended to use the iPhone 5S at all in subzero temperatures - connect EarPods or other headsets.

Should you upgrade from iPhone 5 to iPhone 5S? Yes. This device has a fingerprint sensor, not for a formality, for example, as a novelty - HTC phablet, but for solving urgent problems. This is both protection and additional convenience, unlocking occurs without unnecessary movements. Familiar design, high-quality materials, metal in your hands, glass under your fingers. Much better than plastic or plastic leather. The device has become faster compared to the iPhone 5, the camera is better (much better) - if you tried to take pictures in a club and nothing worked, now it will work. We changed the coating, it is frankly pleasing, I personally also like the color, I am already tired of black. Battery life is a common problem for modern smartphones, but if you don't use the device to its fullest, then it easily lasts a day. I set up an experiment here, turned off everything unnecessary, including data transmission, set the brightness close to the minimum, only answered calls, wrote SMS, did not listen to music. In general, I did practically nothing. The device lasted about four days in this mode, if it spoke less, it worked longer. Another question is who needs the iPhone 5S if you don't do anything with it. Well, you never know, this information may be useful to you.

When the iPhone 5 came out, there was a transition to the Lightning connector, many had to change all accessories, now there is no such problem, the market is littered with cases, speakers, external batteries, batteries with cases, camera attachments and other goods - choose your taste. Another big plus is that the same covers from the iPhone 5 are fully compatible with the iPhone 5S. By the way, the experience of using the original model made of "leather" showed that the Apple case rubs very quickly and comes in an unsightly look. If you only want this, buy black, others are killed a week.

Not so long ago, official sales began in Russia, prices are approximately as follows: 16 GB - 31990, 32 GB - 36990 and 64 GB - 41990, roughly the same situation for all officials. On the gray market, you can buy a top-end version from the United States for several thousand cheaper, but in general there they ask for about $ 850 for an iPhone 5S 64 GB, an excellent offer - LTE will not work for us, but it is cheaper. I will not advise where exactly to buy, let everyone decide for himself.

Should you buy? Yes. I switched to iPhone 5S more than a month ago, a SIM card for roaming is inserted into the iPhone 5, it does not pull back at all. The solved problem with the coating is especially pleasing, I like the TouchID and the camera. If LTE works, it will be good, if not, it's still good. At the moment, the iPhone 5S is one of the best smartphones on the market in terms of the aggregate of characteristics and, despite the modest display diagonal by today's standards, it can easily withstand comparison with other current devices (and will be better than most). Let me remind you that many people talk about the display in isolation from other functions. This is hardly worth doing - so what if the HTC One has a great big display? This is unlikely to help the firm. Accordingly, you can blame Apple specialists as much as you like for maintaining a miniature (relatively) case, for using the same design as last year, for the lack of a breakthrough in technology (although what about TouchID?), For iTunes, for the absence of dozens of points settings in the camera (who needs it?) - they are condemned for a lot and connoisseurs from the Internet will wait, but sales show who is right. Yes, the iPhone 5C failed, people do not vote for plastic with the ruble, but the iPhone 5S is a different story.

The story with the iPhone 5S is simple - to have time to buy before someone else bought it.

    1. Build quality. Compared to the iphone5, the home and on / off buttons work worse.
    2. The battery is clearly weak. With proper operation (I always fully charge and discharge the battery), the charge is not always enough from morning to evening. Enough only if you talk moderately, if the Internet is connected or even worse navigation, the battery is discharged almost instantly.
    3. IOS7 with tuna is a nightmare. However, as in previous models. Now also the binding of the phone to the ID, a setup for the second owners of the phone. If you are planning to use the device for a short time - do not go to iclood and do not turn on "Find an iPhone"!
    4. Screen !!! Guys, it's 2013, and we are all looking through this narrow window and poking at small, small letters.
    5. Price. Obviously overpriced. In my opinion, this phone should not be worth the pain

high cost, it is absolutely impossible to go online if 3g is not available, the same trouble was with 4s. operator - MTS

I bought the phone in the summer of 2014.
Clean in a box, everything is as it should, literally a month later I was greeted by a blue screen, I did not expect this on such a phone, and for that kind of money (30,000 rubles).
Then he just started to turn off, I got used to it, When he wants to then and turns off.
In September, I discovered that the screen was noisy, I clicked and there was such a crackle.
I didn't drop it anywhere, nothing.
    Everything is as it should be;
Cover, protective film for 600 rubles.
I took off the film, I thought it was in the film, but no.

I bought an iPhone 5s on 10/23/2013. I brought home and started installing applications and after installing VKontakte, or rather after launching it, the phone lit up with a "blue screen of death" (BSOD) and rebooted! I read on the Internet what this problem is and it says that it is because of the 64-bit system and IOS7. It is also reported that problems with reboots are associated with iWork applications. But! after I turned off the internet the phone rebooted AGAIN.
The "home" button rattles strongly when pressed. This is certainly not a drawback, but after the fifth iPhone it is somehow unusual and wild.

Battery! Enough for a day, I carry a wire with me, I feel like an android user.

Inconvenient body, very difficult to operate with one hand. You constantly need to stretch.
    - Too light. The required weight is purchased with a branded cover.
    - Strumming volume and power buttons.
    - Clicking screen
    - Clicking Home button (Touch Id)
    - Well, it's not worth 37,000 rubles (Carcass + cover)

Home button click, sometimes lagging, battery draining quickly.

No matter how good the iPhone is ... The battery leaves a lot to be desired. But (!) In spite of the decrease in size (in comparison with 4S), it keeps the charge at a pretty good level.
Working with iTunes is pretty boring, but generally justifies its existence.

no, but there are nuances :))

Part 1: Evaluating Design, Improved Performance, and the Fingerprint Reader

Traditionally, in September, Apple introduced a new version of its iPhone. True, this time two variants of the smartphone were presented at once: the top-end iPhone 5s and the cheaper plastic iPhone 5c. And now we can get acquainted with the first of these two new products in person.

The site went out, which tells all the voiced information about the iPhone 5s and 5c (positioning, the main differences between the two models, etc.). Therefore, we will not repeat them and immediately move on to talking about competitors, but for clarity, we will give a list of the characteristics of the iPhone 5s.

  • Apple A7 SoC @ 1.3 GHz 64 bits (2 cores, Cyclone architecture based on ARMv8)
  • GPU PowerVR SGX 6-series (presumably)
  • RAM 1 GB

Firstly, Apple is ignoring the fashion for huge screens for now. “And thank God,” some readers will say. But people are still gradually getting used to screens of a larger size - even if not 6 inches (this is still an amateur), but, say, 5 inches has long been considered quite a universal size. And after a smartphone with a 5 "screen, the user is unlikely to want to buy a device with a 4" screen.

Secondly, in terms of dpi density and performance characteristics, the iPhone is no longer the leader (although, of course, even with lower performance, the iPhone often provides greater user comfort due to a good optimization of the software platform). Let's take a look at how Apple's new flagship compares to its predecessor, as well as rivals such as the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Sony Xperia Z1.

As you can see from the specs, the iPhone 5s has only three advantages over the flagships of Sony and Samsung, two of which are quite mysterious. Firstly, it is a 64-bit processor (the big question is whether this gives a real performance advantage), and secondly, the ability to shoot video at a frame rate of 120 frames per second. Finally, thirdly, it is less weight / thickness. However, the thickness difference with both competitors is minimal (less than 1 mm).

On all other fronts, the new iPhone is inferior to its rivals: the density of dots per inch of the screen, and the amount of RAM, and the characteristics of the SoC (not counting 64-bit), and the resolution of the rear camera, and the battery capacity, and support for microSD ... But let's not draw conclusions ahead of time, especially since it is always difficult to compare Apple devices with Android smartphones based on characteristics alone. Therefore, let's get down to a personal acquaintance with the iPhone 5s.

Equipment

iPhone 5 is available in three colors: White / Silver, Black / Silver, and White / Gold. We tested it in black and silver, but its box is white.

The package contents are identical to the iPhone 5: an envelope with information leaflets, stickers with the Apple logo, a clip for removing the SIM tray, EarPods, a cable for connecting to a PC via USB or to a 220 V plug, and a charger.

As in the case of the iPhone 5, we note the presence of EarPods as a big plus, which, unlike most smartphone headphones, give really decent sound quality and fit comfortably into the ears.

Design

As expected, the design of the iPhone 5s is almost identical to the design of the iPhone 5 (aside from the color differences, which we'll be sure to tell you about). On the one hand, this design looks quite advantageous even now, but the effect of novelty, of course, is absent, and in today's rapidly changing market it is already risky.

However, new color schemes bring some effect of the update. It's not even about the notorious golden case, but about the gray back panel on the black version of the smartphone. This shade is richer and more interesting than last year's black. Although - there may be different opinions.

The second difference besides the color is the changed front button. Now it feels a little different, it is not concave, but just a little recessed into the body. And, of course, now there is no white square drawn on it. As for the rest of the buttons, they are located identically to the previous model.

On the left side there are two round volume buttons, as well as a lever for turning on the silent mode. On the top is the Power button. All buttons are pressed quite tightly, with a distinct sound.

On the bottom there is a Lightning connector, a 3.5 mm jack for a headset, as well as speaker holes (on the right) and a built-in microphone (on the left).

On the right side there is only a cradle for a Nano-SIM SIM card (the same SIM cards were used in the iPhone 5, but since then they have not become a standard for other smartphone manufacturers).

We also note the impeccable build quality: you can only admire how well all the elements of the case are made.

Summing up the conversation about design, we admit that the appearance of previously unused color schemes certainly introduces an element of novelty, although in general there remains a feeling that Apple is no longer keeping up with the market. The design of iPhones is good, but not so good that you don't make any significant changes to it for two years.

The fingerprint scanner

One of the main features of the new iPhone is the fingerprint scanner. It is located on the Home button. You can add multiple fingers to the device, and you can use the scanner when unlocking (instead of a password) or when shopping in the App Store and iTunes Store, which is much more convenient than driving in a password each time.

You can enter your fingerprint into the system either during the initial setup of the iPhone, or later, through the Settings menu. Fingerprint creation is simple and intuitive: you are asked to touch the Home button several times (about 10-15 times). Once the system has memorized your fingerprint, you can touch the Home button with your finger in different ways: a slight change in the touch angle does not matter. After creating the fingerprint, we had no problems using it - the system quickly recognizes your finger.

Screen

The screen of the iPhone 5s has not changed compared to the previous version of the flagship of the Apple smartphone line. This is the previous 4 inches and 1136 × 640 dots, which gives a density of 326 dpi. But if a year ago these parameters still looked acceptable, today they seem frankly outdated. Most manufacturers equip their top-end devices with Full HD screens and achieve pixel densities in excess of 400 ppi. And only Apple still fell short of even 720p resolution.

Another thing is how much the race for the number of pixels per inch and other characteristics is necessary here. Because even in spite of not the most attractive parameters, the screen of the iPhone 5s still looks great and does not cause either a feeling of looseness of fonts or any other negative emotions. But it is significant that Apple, which three years ago became a trendsetter with its Retina display in the iPhone 4 and seemed the undisputed leader, today lags behind even the average.

Software

iPhone 5s comes with iOS 7 pre-installed. And a day and a half before the release of the new iPhone, it became available for download to owners of previous versions of iOS devices. Regarding iOS 7, many copies have already been broken, and the Internet is full of parodies and demotivators on the topic of iOS 7 and the struggle of Apple chief designer Jony Ive against skeuomorphism (imitation of real objects with their shadows, etc.).

We will not list the features of iOS 7, since this has already been done in the report from the Apple presentation, but we will tell you about our subjective impressions of using iOS 7.

First impression: she really looks fresh. Whether you like the new style or not, Apple has long lacked such a bold update. But the colors are still too acidic: as if I got into the store of lollipops and other children's sweets. In addition, many of the icons look so different from the old ones that they can be difficult to find. For example, try to find the Kiosk icon right off the bat!

Second impression: Jony Ive, having grasped the design of iOS, decided, it seems, to remake it entirely, in all details. Even little things like downloading apps now look different. And you can't say which is better. Just differently (see the right screenshot above). Perhaps it was not worth it to take on innovations so zealously - you could first, say, let people get used to a new visual style, and then introduce changes.

Third impression: the new fonts really made the system look sleeker and lighter. This is especially striking on the iPad, but on the iPhone, everything has become more airy thanks to the fonts.

And the last thing: a lot of really convenient and long-awaited things have appeared (for example, a single browser line or the ability to quickly get to the flashlight and Airplane mode), but their development is burdened by the need to get used to many others - purely external (that is, they do not contain new functionality or convenience) - changes.

Can we recommend iOS 7? We are all realists and understand that sooner or later all users of more or less new iPhone models will have to switch to it. But for the buyers of the iPhone 5s and 5c, no one gives a choice at all. On the other hand, this is not such a tragedy. Everything changes, evolves, and iOS 7 cannot be unequivocally assessed as more (or less) successful than iOS 6. Although we would have preferred that all the innovations contained in it were divided into two full-fledged releases.

Performance

The iPhone 5s is powered by Apple's new A7 SoC (recall that the iPhone 5 had the Apple A6). The main feature of the new SoC is the 64-bit architecture of the "desktop class" (as it was said at the presentation).

If it were not for this feature, so far unseen for mobile devices, the characteristics of the new SoC would only cause disappointment and skepticism. Judge for yourself: the processor frequency is a ridiculous 1.3 GHz, and there are only two cores (although quad-core CPUs are already found even in budget devices). True, it uses the ARMv8 instruction set, on the basis of which the new architecture, called Cyclone, is made.

In addition, the exact GPU model is not reported, but it is believed to be the sixth series of PowerVR SGX GPUs not yet used in other devices.

As for the amount of RAM, it has remained unchanged compared to the iPhone 5 - 1 GB (which, again, is very small by modern standards).

But, in the end, it makes no sense to draw any conclusions based on characteristics alone, and it is much more interesting to see what results the new iPhone demonstrates in benchmarks.

Let's start with browser benchmarks: SunSpider 1.0, Octane Benchmark, and Kraken Benchmark. In all cases, we used the Safari browser from iOS 7 on Apple devices, and Google Chrome on Android.

As we can see, the difference between iPhone 5s and iPhone 5 is more than significant. But it is also significant that all competitors are left behind. Is that NVIDIA Shield (which, by the way, has the closest screen resolution to the iPhone) was able to outrun the new product in one of three tests. But the rest of the result is eloquent.

Now let's see how the iPhone 5s performs in Geekbench 2, a multi-platform benchmark that measures CPU and RAM performance.

The results of this test are seriously affected by the number of CPU cores, so the result is quite natural: due to the more progressive architecture, the Apple iPhone 5s greatly outperforms its predecessor, but at the same time it is noticeably inferior to multi-core Android competitors.

Left - iPhone 5s results, right - iPhone 5

Here the difference between the iPhone 5 and 5s is no longer so striking, although it is still there, and quite significant.

Now let's see the GPU performance. There are two multiplatform benchmarks available here: GFXBench (formerly GLBenchmark 2.7) and 3DMark. Let's start with the GFXBench results.

Apple iPhone 5s
(Apple A7)
Apple iPhone 5
(Apple A6)
NVIDIA Shield
(NVIDIA Tegra 4)
Samsung Galaxy S4
(Exynos 5410 Octa)
Sony Xperia Z1
(Qualcomm Snapdragon 800)
GFXBench 2.7.2 T-Rex HD (C24Z16 Offscreen) 25 fps 6.6 fps 24 fps 11.7 fps 23 fps
GFXBench 2.7.2 T-Rex HD (C24Z16 Onscreen) 27 fps 13.6 fps 39 fps 12.9 fps 24 fps
GFXBench 2.7.2 T-Rex HD (C24Z16 Offscreen Fixed Timestep) 23 fps 6.6 fps 23 fps 11.3 fps 21 fps
GFXBench 2.7.2 T-Rex HD (C24Z16 Onscreen Fixed Timestep) 26 fps 13.8 fps 36 fps 11.3 fps 23 fps
GFXBench 2.7.2 Egypt HD (C24Z16) 56 fps 29.7 fps 59 fps 40.0 fps 59 fps
GFXBench 2.7.2 Egypt HD (C24Z16 Offscreen) 48 fps 40.4 fps 65 fps 38.1 fps 55 fps

And what do we see? Previously, Apple devices dominated this benchmark. But now the picture has changed: at least two SoCs - NVIDIA Tegra 4 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 - are not inferior to the latest Apple SoC in terms of GPU performance, and in some ways even surpass it. The only good news is the progress of the latter in comparison with the iPhone 5. Well, if we speak apart from the competition with Android devices, the iPhone 5s, of course, looks like an ideal mobile gaming platform, and for at least two more years all new games will be tough for it.

The situation is similar here. The iPhone 5s performed well on the whole (the Maxed out! notation is especially revealing in a weaker mode, which means that this test for the iPhone 5s is too easy), but compared to the Android flagships, they are no longer so impressive.

In general, judging by the benchmarks, a miracle did not happen: the Apple A7, coupled with 1 GB of RAM, performed on a par or even lost to the Android flagships in most tests. But on the other hand, he left far behind the Apple A6, so progress within the framework of one platform is encouraging. In the end, for iPhone users this is even more important, because even when using multiplatform benchmarks, the comparison with Android devices is not entirely correct: for Apple devices, developers optimize their applications more carefully, and this allows them to use their hardware capabilities more efficiently. Therefore, despite not the most outstanding result "in parrots", the conclusion for practical use will be this: if you want to play the coolest mobile games in the next two years, buy an iPhone 5s. It doesn't matter how many bits, gigahertz and cores there are. So far, this is not so important.

However, another conclusion is important for the industry: it is more and more difficult for Apple to compete in this field, and if earlier iOS devices were unambiguously leading in performance, but today the result is ambiguous, then it is possible that in a year Apple will already be in catching up, and no software programs will help. optimizations and other features of the iOS platform.

Autonomous work

The battery capacity of the iPhone 5s has only slightly increased over the iPhone 5. And judging by the gaming tests (taking full advantage of the increased performance), this is clearly not enough. In GLBenchmark 2.5.1 in the Battery test, the iPhone 5 lasted (before automatic shutdown) about 2 hours and 22 minutes (at maximum brightness and maximum settings). And the iPhone 5s didn't even make it to two hours.

On the other hand, in everyday use, we did not notice a significant decrease in battery life compared to the iPhone 5. However, we only had the device on the test for two days, so it's too early to draw any conclusions.

Note that when using GPU benchmarks, the smartphone got very hot. It was uncomfortable to hold it in my hands.

It takes less than two hours to fully charge the battery.

Communication and mobile internet

During the short time that the iPhone 5s was with us for testing, we did not notice any problems with communication during phone calls. The voice of the interlocutor is quite loud and clear, we did not encounter breaks or weakening of the signal during the conversation (although we took the phone with both our left and right hands, tried to grasp it in different ways). The number of points showing the signal level varied from 3 to 5.

The main intrigue was whether the new iPhone supports Russian LTE networks. And here the situation is mysterious: judging by the characteristics, European models have support for Russian bands. But in fact, the iPhone 5s cannot connect to 4G. This information was confirmed by the representatives of the operators, for whom it also came as a surprise. Apparently, the iPhone 5s has software blocking of networks that have not been approved or tested by Apple. Thus, one can hope that by the time the iPhone 5s is officially released in Russia, LTE support will appear, but now it is not. And the main question here is whether the "gray" smartphones previously imported from Europe will have LTE support, or will they remain without access to 4G.

In the second part of the article, we will test the smartphone screen in detail, as well as study the camera in detail and compare it with the iPhone 5, and then summarize.
