Laptop battery repair. Recover laptop battery yourself

Sooner or later, each user is faced with a situation where the battery from his device becomes completely or partially unusable. The easiest solution to the problem is to purchase a new charging cell. Unfortunately, batteries are quite expensive, so users often resort to restoring the device on their own. A detailed technique will be discussed in this article. It is suitable for laptops of different brands - Lenovo, ASUS, HP, Samsung, Dell, Acer, Toshiba, etc.

Returning battery health

First of all, it is important for you to realize that any actions taken in relation to the charging element may result in a complete failure of the device from working. This is due to the fact that with third-party intervention, the controller responsible for recharging is blocked. In this regard, it is advisable to replace the battery completely or to do only calibration.

Method 1: Battery Calibration

This is probably the easiest method to restore battery health, but it can significantly improve charging speed and extend battery life. There are many calibration utilities available on the Internet. Most popular representatives: Battery Eater, BatteryCare, Battery Optimizer. When using any of these applications, you will notice the result in literally a couple of minutes. The programs analyze the state of the battery and select the most optimal mode for its operation.

Method 2: manual recharging of cells

There is a significant risk of using this method to render the battery completely unusable. Most often it is used if the computer cannot see the charging element. Charging requires a device called the iMax. It is with its help that you can return the battery to the state it was in when you purchased the device, well, or, make it completely unusable.

  1. Make sure the controller on the device is working. To do this, you will need to unwind the battery and use a multimeter.
  2. Conduct a visual performance analysis. Make sure all chips are soldered and there are no dark spots. If you find any malfunction, you can safely be sure that the problem lies in the controller.

  3. The same procedure can be done in a simpler way. It is necessary to connect a copper cord to the farthest contacts and find out the voltage with a millimeter.

  4. If the controller cannot be repaired on its own, then you will definitely have to purchase a new battery.
  5. Check the health of the cells. You will need a tester for this.
  6. Unscrew the case and find the individual elements that look like simple batteries.

  7. Find out the voltage strength for each pair using a previously used device.

  8. If suddenly some elements are inactive, it will be enough to replace them to restore the battery's performance.
  9. In order to charge the device from iMax, it will need to be connected using a special balancing cord.

  10. The rest of the wiring is attached to the track or directly to the board.
  11. The positive cable is connected to the corresponding pole, after which the iMax is started and the terminals with contacts are attached according to the charge. For the simplicity of this step, the terminals were made in different colors.

  12. Go to the main menu of the device and go to the block "User Set Program".

  13. Be sure to make sure the battery is configured to match the iMax.

  14. Open the main window, select the required mode and click on the item "Start".

  15. Be sure to set the number of cells available in the battery.
  16. Go to the Balance section and click on the inscription "Start" to start the battery health check procedure.
  17. All that is left for you is to agree to the charging and wait until the end of the recovery procedure.

  18. Check the device for its voltage. In case of correct operation, the value should be equal to the rated power.
  19. Connect the battery and make sure the laptop can detect it.

Method 3: Manually Replace Cells

In the event that any cell has become unusable, and the previous method did not give a result, you will need to change the inoperative component with your own hands. You can buy it at specialty stores or simply get it from an unused battery.

The most important thing to pay attention to is the capacity of the new cells. It should not differ from other elements used.

Performing all of these actions, as mentioned earlier, can damage the controller. In order to restore its performance, special software is used, which can be found on the manufacturers' resources or the Battery EEPROM Works program. But usually only people closely related to electronics can use these applications, since it will be extremely problematic for an ordinary user to master such software.

It is possible to repair a laptop battery on your own, but there are very significant risks, which is not always justified. Agree, a weakly working battery is still better than a completely blocked one.

The built-in battery allows the laptop to work autonomously for about 3-4 hours. The battery often serves no more than three to four years, but sometimes problems begin much earlier. A bad battery will significantly affect the performance of your laptop. The first sign of a malfunction is a warning to the operating system with a recommendation to replace the battery. The message appears when the battery capacity is already quite reduced, and it cannot work fully.

"Composition" of the battery on the laptop

It is logical to start with the "composition" of the battery on this portable device.

The battery consists of four to eight chargeable cells, placed and soldered in a case. This often leads to the false conclusion that replacing the battery on a laptop is the only way out of the situation in the event of a malfunction and inadequate operation of the device, the performance can be restored in other ways.

The batteries are powered by built-in batteries of a slightly larger size than finger-type ones, they differ from finger-type ones and in capacity. Thanks to such elements, it is possible to restore the battery by replacing faulty batteries with new ones.

The main element of the battery is a microcircuit or microcontroller. This element is responsible for the operation of the battery, and also displays all the characteristics on the screen (state of charge, battery temperature, and so on).

Possible causes of malfunctions

Today, notebook computers use lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride batteries. These types of batteries were replaced by nickel-cadmium ones due to their higher capacity and the absence of the so-called memory effect.
Lithium-ion batteries deteriorate quite often and relatively easily - they cannot tolerate extreme heat or cold, and you also need to be careful with charging. If the battery is over-discharged, it can be damaged. Also, do not charge it for too long - this can also affect its performance. Another reason that can easily ruin a battery is non-use. If the battery is in the case of the laptop, but the computer is running on mains, or if the laptop has simply not been used for a long time, the battery often cannot please with the same activity.

A short circuit can even provoke an explosion. That is why a microcontroller is needed that regulates the operation of all elements, and also protects against possible emergency situations.

However, if, nevertheless, the battery holds a charge much worse, if earlier you could use the computer offline for about 2 hours, and now the battery usage time barely lasts up to thirty minutes, and the system gives out familiar messages, you should do something.

Laptop battery repair

  1. Calibration. Repairs can be carried out by means of calibration, which is carried out by programs from the manufacturer. The task of this operation is to eliminate the inconsistency in the operation of the microcontroller and the battery power supply. Quite often, the battery capacity instantly drops to 30%, and this method allows you to return to working capacity;
  2. Recovery. Elements that no longer function are removed and changed, then soldered into an electrical circuit;
  3. It is imperative to reprogram the device with further calibration. Thus, you can return the battery to service;
  4. Replacement. If the calibration and recovery do not work, then you cannot do without replacing the battery.

Algorithm for disassembling the battery on a laptop

  1. We completely discharge the battery, after which we remove it;
  2. We open the battery cover. To do this, you need to know how to disassemble the battery on a laptop. You will need a thin knife blade and a small hammer. Lightly tap the battery case along the edges and shallowly thrust the knife into the plastic of the cover. We do everything carefully so as not to get hurt. We carry out the operation two or three times, until the case cracks, then we do not separate it in two parts. Take your time and remember to be careful. If you overdo it and do not calculate the strength, you can damage the case and batteries that are inside. Lithium batteries contain elements that are harmful to health. Pushing the blade too deep can easily damage the controller and other components. In this case, the repair is not worth continuing, you can immediately save money for a new battery;
  3. The board on the left monitors the actions of the battery, this is an important device with a microcontroller and memory elements that store information about the operation of the device, charge cycles, as well as other battery elements, they are on the right. Do not rush to disconnect these particles from the general scheme. First you need to measure the voltage level at each element. On one pair, the voltage, for example, may be 1.2 volts, and on the rest - 3.3;
  4. We select elements for replacement and prepare them for installation. Remember the main rule: all elements must have the same capacity and type, it is great if all particles are from the same batch. We recommend taking several items in reserve;
All elements must have the same resistance. They need to be installed only discharged, at about 3.6 V.

Products are often sold charged. Then you should use a 5-10 ohm resistor. We discharge the elements all together, connecting them in parallel ("+" to "+", "-" to "-").

Immediately, we note why it is extremely undesirable to put charged cells. If you insert charged cells, the device will try to charge the cells. If the charge does not go (and it will not go, because there is nowhere to go), then the system will perceive the elements as inoperative or continue charging, which can lead to rather serious consequences - laptop failure or even fire.

  1. If the preparation is complete, you can start installing new items;
We perform the replacement in the following order: first, we remove unnecessary elements (it is necessary to start from the larger “+” to the smaller one). New elements are placed in reverse order - we install the element that is on the right, and first "earth", then "+", then we insert the following particles in turn. Next, you need to check the quality of the work performed and soldering.
  1. Now you also need to carefully return the case to its original state, put the covers in place, then insert the battery into your laptop. We connect an external power source, charge.

Attention! Do not leave your device unattended when charging for the first time. Monitor the temperature of the charging battery to prevent overheating. If you notice any problem, immediately turn off the power and pull the battery out of the computer.

After completing the charging procedure, we check the battery performance. The battery life should increase significantly - on average by an hour and a half.

If everything went well, the device's performance is improved - congratulations on the end of the work!

Here are a few tips for using the laptop battery to prolong battery life.

  1. If your laptop is often powered by an external power source, it is best to remove the battery and store it separately in a cool place. But do not forget to "drive" the battery. The battery must be fully discharged and recharged at least several times a month. Otherwise, do not be surprised if, after a break in use, it refuses to work;
  2. The display consumes a lot of power, so if you want to increase the battery life of the laptop, lower the brightness to optimal;
  3. Wireless networks also have a big impact on battery performance. It is advisable to turn off Wi-Fi if you are not using it. Use wired channels whenever possible;
  4. We recommend that you use the operating schemes for laptops in order to save energy. Operating systems already include developed circuits to save power. It will also help increase battery life.

Over time, the laptop battery loses its original capacity, which affects the battery life of the device. If your laptop operates on a full charge for about an hour or stops turning on at all without a connected power adapter, do not rush to purchase a new battery, in some cases it is possible to restore the laptop battery yourself.

Battery Calibration Using a Special Utility

If the battery starts to discharge too quickly, the first step is to try to calibrate it. The most reliable way is to use a special utility, which is called differently depending on the manufacturer. For example, for Lenovo laptops, this is Energy Management, for Aser, Aser Care Center. The point is that it is necessary to start a mode through the utility, which first completely discharges the battery, and then fully charges it. During calibration, do not unplug the power adapter, cut off the power supply, or use a laptop. The process can take from 2 to 10 hours. In some cases, calibration can help restore the former autonomy of the device.

Laptop battery recovery - open the battery

If the calibration does not give the desired results or, as described earlier, the laptop does not operate on battery power until the power adapter is connected, it is time to start repairing the battery.

Required tools:

  • breadboard knife;
  • multimeter;
  • a soldering iron with a power not exceeding 40 W;
  • several car bulbs with a power of 21 W;
  • cyanoacrylate glue.

Since laptop batteries are made non-separable, you will have to use a breadboard knife or other sharp object to open its case. Find the seam on the battery and cut it carefully. Do this carefully so as not to damage the internal components.

Before proceeding with the further steps, be sure to determine the type of your battery, as this will affect the recovery process. If the laptop is new, then most likely you have a lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery, and if the laptop is more than 3-4 years old, then it may have a nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery.

Nickel-metal hydride battery recovery

Instructions:

  1. count the number of batteries inside the battery case;
  2. multiply this value by 1.2 to set the nominal voltage of the battery;
  3. solder car bulbs to the extreme terminals of the batteries connected in series;
  4. on the multimeter, set the measurement limit to 20 V and check the voltage on the bulbs - if it is equal to the nominal, go to the sixth point (in the case when the battery voltage corresponds to the nominal, but the laptop does not turn on, this indicates a problem with the controller);
  5. if the voltage is less than the nominal, set the measurement limit on the multimeter to 2000 mV, and then check the voltage on individual elements, making marks, for example, with a marker, on those whose voltage is less than 1.1 V (if any, you will have to replace all the elements);
  6. attach to each element battery a light bulb with soldered wires and leave it for about 10 hours so that it is completely discharged;
  7. then, using the laptop power supply and a light bulb connected in series to the battery cells, raise the voltage of each cell to 1.1 V, then fully charge the battery;
  8. repeat the full discharge and charge cycle two more times;
  9. glue the case and check the battery performance by connecting it to the laptop.

If the described method does not bring results, you will have to change all the batteries at once. Sanyo NiMH batteries with a capacity of 2,100 mAh work well. When replacing, do not use a soldering iron to chain the batteries. Instead, make contact holders and solder the connecting wires to them.

Rebuilding a lithium-ion battery

These batteries are dangerous, so use extreme caution when repairing. Make sure the battery is completely discharged before starting.

Repair instructions:

  1. determine the nominal battery voltage by counting the number of batteries and multiplying the resulting value by 3.7;
  2. solder the bulbs to the extreme outputs of the series-connected elements;
  3. check the voltage - if it corresponds to the nominal, then go to the fifth point (note, if the laptop does not work on battery power, the controller is most likely out of order);
  4. if the voltage is less than the nominal, it is necessary first of all to unsolder the controller, and then all the elements from each other and check the voltage of each separately, while all elements with a voltage significantly less than 3.7 V should be replaced with new ones;
  5. use a light bulb to discharge all batteries to 3.2 V;
  6. then glue the battery case, insert it into the laptop and carry out the full charge process.

Another problem that occurs with lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries, if they have not been used for a long time, is the voltage drop to a level below the threshold at which the safety controller is triggered. In this case, the battery is not charged, and the voltage on its contacts is zero. To solve the problem, it is necessary to connect the laptop power supply to the serial chain of battery cells through a 5 W light bulb and charge the battery to a voltage of 3.4 V per cell.

Hello dear readers of the blog site

Today you will learn how to recover a laptop battery.

You can easily give a second "life" to a dead battery on your laptop by practically reviving it!

I will show you two methods of recovery, one of which is universal, and the second is individual, which will restore life to a battery that seems to have become obsolete.

You should not, of course, delude yourself that the battery will become like new, but maybe 30 minutes more you will get from completely not holding a charge. So, you will have to buy a new battery in any case.

Battery types

  • NiCd (Nickel-Cadmium);
  • Nickel-Metal Hydride and NiMH.
  • Casting (Li-Metal);
  • Li-Ion (Lithium-ion);
  • Li-Polymer

Recovery method for Nickel-cadmium and hydride

1. Let's start with the individual method, turn off the laptop, take out the battery, look at the markings, if you see Li-Ion, then this is not your case. Also, all Mac notebooks run on lithium batteries only.

2. We take a plastic bag, preferably with a latch, put a hopeless battery in it and put it in the freezer of your refrigerator for about 12-13 hours no more, this is important! The bag must be sealed so that water cannot get into the battery.

3. After a twelve hour period of time, remove the battery from the "freezer", let it acclimatize to room temperature (about 30 minutes), periodically wiping off the condensate from it.

4. Insert the battery into the corresponding slot of your laptop and after fully charging it, wait at least another hour. Then discharge it to speed up the discharge process, run resource-intensive programs: games, graphics editors, videos, etc. Repeat these steps 3-4 times.

You should not bring the discharge to a complete shutdown of the computer, it should always remain about 3%.

The general method is suitable for all types

1. If you notice that the laptop power supply has decreased, then you should try to apply the steps described below.

2. Discharge the computer as described above, but completely before turning it off. Moreover, wait until the indicator lights stop blinking to completely empty the container to a deep discharge.

3. When your PC stops giving signs of "life", connect the power without starting the OS itself.

4. Charge continuously for two days!

5. Now you can start the operating system and use your computer.

It will not be at all superfluous, even for preventive purposes.

Suddenly, the laptop battery stops holding a charge, and then it stops working. Many are familiar with this situation. It won't charge and as soon as the charger is pulled out the laptop will shut down. The battery is dead. The author of this article knows how to revive it. He will tell you how to do it.

Please note that we are only recovering a dead battery. If your battery is completely discharged, read on!

Yes, and by the way ... The author is not responsible for any problems you may encounter, such as damaged batteries, fires, explosions or any other damage. You do everything at your own peril and risk.

Step one: theory

A laptop battery usually consists of three pairs of batteries. Each pair consists of two battery cells soldered in parallel. When the battery cells are connected in parallel, the voltage remains the same, but the capacity of the entire unit increases (you can "pull out more amperes, more electrons from them").

Typically, each battery cell (and therefore a pair) has a voltage of 3.7 V. When they are connected in series (whether they are individual cells or the aforementioned pairs), the voltage increases, thus 3.7 x 3 = 11.1 V.

Each pair must be 3.7V.

Why is the battery not charging? This is because one of the pairs does not have the same voltage as the others, which prevents the computer from charging them all at the same time.

Step two: action plan

First you need to open the laptop battery pack and study each of the three "pairs". They must have the same voltage. If not, then it is necessary to recharge the low voltage pair back to 3.7V.

Step three: tools

Multimeter
Charger, about 4-5V (from old phone)

You may also need:

Small knife to remove paper from the battery.
Battery opener screwdriver

Step four. Removing the battery pack

Unplug the charger, turn the laptop over and locate the battery on the back of the laptop.

May have two buttons. One of them is a lock, slide it away from the battery. Now press another button and remove the battery.

Step five: remove the sticker

Now turn the battery pack over and find the side with the text. What you are looking at is a thick piece of special paper. You can safely remove it with a small knife or any sharp object. You just need to pick up the sticker with the cutter and continue to tear off with your fingers.

Step six: remove the cover

What you see is actually a lid that opens.

You may need a screwdriver to insert it into the "slot", turn and thus open the battery pack. Once done, simply remove the cover as shown in the photo.

Step Seven: Removing the Battery

Gently lift the batteries from one end and then the other to make sure they don't stick to the compartment. Now flip it over and let the batteries fall into your hand. Make sure the PCB also comes out with the batteries.

Step Eight: Separating Paired Blocks

Separately separate the three pairs of batteries so that you can measure their ratings. This requires a multimeter.

As you can see, they are soldered in pairs, so it doesn't matter where to take the values from. It is necessary to measure the voltage of the pair.

Step Nine: Measure the voltage of the pairs

The voltage should be 3.7 V. With this in mind, we carry out the measurement.

As you can see, the middle pair is bad here.

Step ten: connect the charger

Now we begin the process of correcting this situation.

Take a charger. Determine which wire is positive and which is negative. Often there is a white or gray line on one of the wires. Take a measurement with a multimeter. If the displayed voltage is a positive number, then the red tip is positive and the black tip is negative.
If the displayed voltage is negative, then the opposite is true.

In the photo, the measurement is 11.9 V.

Step Eleven: Restoring Battery Charge

Attach the positive wire to the positive end of the battery and the negative to the negative end. Recharge for a few minutes. Then wait 10-20 seconds before measuring. This is necessary in order for the charge to normalize, since the voltage in the cells drops when they stop charging.

When it seems that you have finally reached the desired voltage, you should wait half a minute and try again to make sure that the elements no longer need it.

Step twelve: putting the elements back

Reconnect the cells and place them in the battery compartment as shown in the figure. Make sure the PCB is fully inserted.

Then put the cover back in place. Then stick the sticker. If it doesn't stick, which is likely to happen, just use clear tape or glue.

Step thirteen: Return the battery pack to the laptop

Insert the battery pack back into the laptop and slide the lock to the closed position facing the battery.

Step fourteen: battery operation
