How to split a file into parts? How to split a file into several parts for sending by e-mail How to split a file into several.

Question from user

Hello.

Tell me, I have one video for 20 GB (video recording of one game). I want to transfer it to another computer, but the file does not fit on my flash drive (it is 16 GB).

Now there is an option - either buy a new large flash drive (or portable drive), or find a way to somehow transfer the file in parts (for example, split the file into 2 parts). I tried to re-encode the video - but you need to wait for a whole day, and it's not a fact that it will be re-converted and it will become smaller ...

Arthur, Petrozavodsk

Good day!

In general, such a task occurred quite often before, when the Internet was not so developed and there were no capacious media (nowadays one external hard drive can solve this problem ☺).

In this article I will give several ways by which you can quickly split any file into several parts (the size you need), and then, when you transfer it to another medium, assemble it (so that everything opens and reads).

Method number 1: creating a multi-volume archive

One of the easiest and fastest ways to split absolutely ANY file(s) (or even folder) is to put it in a multi-volume archive. Moreover, the volume size can be set manually, exactly the one you need.

For those who are afraid that the archive creation time will be too long, I will say that the archive can be created WITHOUT COMPRESSION! Those. the archive will be needed only to pack the information and split it into volumes (by the way, an uncompressed archive packs quite quickly).

The best free archivers -

We find the folder or file that needs to be divided: right-click on it and select in the explorer context menu "7-Zip > Add to Archive" (see screenshot below).

In the settings for creating an archive, you need:

  1. compression level: "No compression" is recommended (this way you will spend much less time. Moreover, the video file will not be compressed in this way);
  2. Split volumes by size: Specify the maximum file size in megabytes here. Let's say for a 16 GB flash drive, it will be about 14500 MB (i.e. 14500M), example below.

After creating the archive, you will see that it consists of many parts of the same size. Now, in order to extract it, you need to extract the very first part of the archive (001) - see the screenshot below. In general, 7-Zip is quite a "smart" program and will highlight the file you need with its icon ☺.

Method number 2: breakdown in Total Commander

Another very good and reliable way to split a file is to use a special function in the Total Commander program.

Total Commander

A very functional and convenient file manager (in my opinion, it is much more convenient than the classic explorer). Allows you to browse directories without brakes, in which there are thousands of files. It also allows you to easily and quickly work with all popular archives: ZIP, 7ZIP, ARJ, LZH, RAR, UC2, TAR, GZ, CAB, ACE, etc.

There are unique features: group renaming of files (with customizable filters and masks), splitting a file, working with FTP, etc.

And so, first of all, we launch Total Commander and find our file. In my case, this is a photo archive ("photo.7z") - the size of this file is about 1 GB. Task: break it into parts, each of which is no more than 250 MB.

Let's split one big file into 5 parts

First select this file and then click on the menu "Files/Split File..." . See screenshot below.

As I said above, I indicated 250 MB (by the way, the program has all the most popular sizes: for Floppy 3.5 floppy disks, CD / DVD disks, etc.), and indicated the same folder in which the original file is located.

After that, the file was divided into 5 parts (plus the sixth part is the checksum of the file (it is necessary to check the integrity of the archive, I also recommend saving and not deleting it!).

Actually, now you can transfer all these divided files in any order to another PC, and then also select in the Total Commander menu "Files/Collect File..." . In general, everything is quite simple and fast ...

Method number 3: cut the video into parts (without conversion)

If you are dealing with a video, then in this case it is not at all necessary to pack it into an archive or resort to the help of Total Commander... You can use some video editor and split the video into certain parts (although this is not very suitable in that case if you don't want to cut the video permanently, because merging video is a procedure that may take longer...).

How to do it simply and without "nerves" ☺?

You will need one video editor - VideoMONTAZH.

Video MONTAGE

One of the easiest and most intuitive video editors. The developers specifically made it very simple with a step-by-step wizard so that any user (even a complete beginner) can easily figure out how to edit and create their own video (perhaps the very first one!).

The editor has all the most necessary functions for video processing. So, this option is one of the best for solving simple tasks, and in order to learn how to process video.

After installing the editor, open the function in it "Cut video"(this option appears in the first window that appears immediately after starting the program).

Then, when saving the video, BE SURE to indicate that you want to save the video to original quality(see screenshot below). Thus, the video will be saved without conversion and very quickly. In fact, we just split the video into 2-3-4 (or more) parts without editing it!

Well, that's all for me, good luck to everyone!

Additions are welcome...

It is often necessary to split one file into several in order to collect all its parts in a compact place that can be sent to work or for some other purpose. This process is not difficult, but requires the presence of the Winrar program, which is designed specifically for this. This article will tell you how to work with this program to split a file into parts.

How to split a file into parts - write Winrar

  • In order to split the file into parts, you need to install the Winrar program. Most likely, you have it installed, since when you buy a computer, all the basic programs are already installed on the operating system. Despite this, if you still do not have Winrar, follow the link and download the file.
  • It is important to remember that in order for the program to register and work correctly, you need to download the version that fits the bits of your operating system. To check how much bit your system is, you need to right-click in the “My Computer” folder and select the “properties” tab in the window that pops up. The next window will give you information about all the indicators of your system. Find the bit depth (the location of the information will be indicated on the screen below).

  • After you know the bitness of the operating system, return to the site to download winrar. Choose the one that matches the metrics we looked at recently. After downloading, install the program.

How to split a file into parts using Winrar

You can do this by following the step by step instructions:

  • We find the file that needs to be split into parts. Let's take video as an example. We click on it with the right mouse button and select “Add to archive” in the pop-up window.

  • After that, a window will appear where you will need to specify the compression method. The recommended method is normal. We select it. Thinking of a name for our archive. Then we select the size of the files into which our file will be split and click on OK.

  • After all these actions, a window of the file splitting process will appear. This usually doesn't take long, unless the file is too big. We are waiting for a couple of minutes.

  • We are looking for an archive on the desktop, go into it and make sure that the operation to split the file was successful.

Splitting large files allows us to use large memory streams in a compact and convenient way. The winrar program is an indispensable assistant in such situations.

We have all come across situations where we need towrite a large file to a disk or flash drive, which would then transfer it to another computer. Most often in our daily life, we need to transfer games or movies. But as luck would have it, a large-capacity flash drive is not at hand, and here a regular data archiver comes to the rescue. With his help, we can easily split the file into several parts, the volume we need.

On the example of the utility winrar I'll show you how transfer large file with a smaller flash drive. WinRar is already installed on the vast majority of computers.

But if suddenly you do not have - DOWNLOAD .

For example, we have a 500 MB flash drive, and we need to record a 700 MB movie on it. Right-click on the movie file and select "Add to archive…".

By clicking on the "Browse ..." button, we will select the location where parts of our movie will be saved. If you want the archiving process to go faster, select the "Compression method" - high-speed or no compression at all. Next, in the paragraph “Split into volumes by size”, we indicate the size of the parts, so that the resulting pieces of the file put on a flash drive. Please note that the size is indicated in bytes. To get a 500 MB file fragment, we will write in this line - 500,000,000 bytes.

We don't need to touch any other settings. Click "OK" and wait for the program to finish archiving our file.

Write a large file to a disk or flash drive

After the archiving progress window disappears from the monitor, we open the folder that we specified when setting up the archiving and see that the program split the file into 2 parts. Now you can transfer parts of the archive to a USB flash drive in turn, and then dump it on another computer. After all parts of the archive have been transferred to the place we need, we need to extract all parts of the archive. To do this, select all the pieces and when you right-click, select "Extract files ...".

Select a location to unpack the archive and click OK.

Do you know the situation when an attempt to burn your favorite movie or game to a flash drive ends in failure? As a result, a window appears with the inscription - not enough free space.
One of the reasons is that the file being copied is larger in volume than the capacity of the flash drive. You can transfer such a file by cutting it in parts or by buying a new USB flash drive.

First, let's make sure that the movie or game really does not fit on the flash drive, due to the large file size and the small capacity of the flash drive.

You can check this by comparing the size of the movie:
- find the movie on the hard drive;
- select it;
- right-click to open the Properties/General menu;
- see "Size"
and the amount of consolidated space on the flash drive:
- My computer / Removable disk;
- Properties / General / Free.

If there is really not enough space due to the accumulated files, then you will have to delete everything previously recorded from the USB flash drive, after copying everything to the computer’s hard drive.
If the film still does not fit, you will have to cut it into several parts.
In my opinion, the easiest way to first cut the film into several parts, and then put it back together is archiving with division into several volumes. This can be done with the help of programs - archivers, such as WinRAR. At the same time, the file size will decrease slightly, but the film will be divided correctly and it can be transferred to home or work, in two or three times.

How to split a movie using WinRAR

1. Find a movie on your hard drive.
2. Right-click to open the menu and select WinRAR/Add to archive.
3. In the opened window of the WinRAR program, if desired, change the name of the archive and specify the size of the volumes. You can enter it yourself or select it from the drop-down list. Since the default size is set in bytes, in order not to type in a number with a huge number of zeros, after the selected size, write mb.

For example, it would look like this:

I have a 2GB flash drive. I need to record a 2.05 GB movie on it. Thus, I need to create an archive split into two volumes.

1. In the window, I specify an arbitrary volume size, for example, 1500 mb.

Thus, the first volume will be 1500 mb, and the second - 505 mb. With the same success, I can specify a different size, as long as the file later fits on my flash drive.
If recording is supposed to be on a CD, then it is better to choose the size from the proposed ones - 700 MB.
If your computer has a Fat 32 file system, then for burning to DVD, choose a size less than or equal to 4095mb.
Or you can even cut it into fragments of 100mb.

2. After pressing the OK button, the creation of the archive will begin, the time of which depends on the size of the movie and the performance of the computer.

3. Several archive files with the same names and the prefix .part1, .part2 appear in the folder with the file
As you can see, only the number in the name changes.

How to connect the resulting volumes using the WinRAR program.

All volumes must be copied to one folder on the hard drive. Then select the first volume (it's easy to find by adding part1 to the name), WinRAR/Extract files.
The archiver will unzip the volumes in the right order and merge them.

I think many people have encountered the fact that a file or folder exceeds the required limit in size (for example, when sending an attachment by mail, uploading to an ftp server or writing to some media), one of the solutions is to archive the data, as it will help reduce the size folder or file. But if this is not enough and even the archive cannot be compressed to the required limit, in this case the file or folder can be divided into several archives of the required size.

This article will be devoted to this - how to split / split a file or folder into several archives using the Winrar or 7-Zip archiver.

Split/split a file or folder into multiple archives using WinRar.

We have a site folder that needs to be archived into several archives. To do this, right-click on it, select "Add to archive".

In the opened window Archive name and parameters, in the " Are common”, at the bottom left we see the field "Split into volumes of size (in bytes)", you can use the already set parameters, for example, if you want to save to a floppy disk (although I think this is no longer relevant) or CD. If you are not satisfied with the prescribed sizes, you can specify your own value, just remember that the value is indicated in bytes!!!

Let me remind you:
1 Kilobyte (1Kb) = 1024 bytes,
1 Megabyte 1 (Mb) = 1048576 bytes,
10 Megabytes (10 Mb) = 10485760 bytes.
Accordingly, if I want to make archives not exceeding 10 MB. It is necessary to register 10485760.

Click "OK". As a result, I got several archives whose size does not exceed the specified value of 10 MB.

Split/Split a file or folder into multiple archives using 7-Zip.

Right-click on the file or folder you want to archive, select "7-Zip - Add to Archive".

In the window Add to archive there is a field at the bottom left "Split into volumes of size (in bytes)", in this field we select or prescribe the required size, in this case I want to split it into archives of 10 MB and there is a specified size, respectively, I just select it (you can also prescribe 10485760 - the result will be the same)

As a result, there were several archives not exceeding 10 MB.
In order to correctly open the created archives, they must all be placed in one folder and the first archive opened.
