The laptop sees all networks except. The computer does not see the router

Sometimes situations arise when the network seems to be configured, and the terminal is connected to a wired or wireless network, and the settings are set correctly, but still the local computer does not see the computers on the network or even the currently active networks themselves. Why does the computer not see the network?

To begin with, when establishing a connection using a wired connection, first of all, you should check whether the cable is firmly inserted into the network card of the local terminal or into the distributing computer unit (laptop or router) in the case of wireless networks based on Wi-Fi.

These are problems of a physical nature, which are not worth focusing on. Let's consider cases when a computer does not see a network of any type and, accordingly, terminals connected to them, associated with some parameters and settings of such connections.

I would like to immediately draw attention to the fact that computers connected to any type of network and currently in low power mode (hibernation or sleep) will not be perceived by the local terminal either, considering them disconnected.

Problems with wireless networks

Let's start with wireless networks. If the local is currently active, there are several reasons for this situation, of which the following are the most common:

  • incorrect configuration of access to networks on a single computer;
  • incorrect router parameters;
  • disabled or faulty Wi-Fi module (or network adapter);
  • missing or incorrectly installed driver;
  • blocking the connection by an antivirus, the built-in Windows firewall, or a third-party firewall.

To fix the problem, you first need to turn on the Wi-Fi module (on laptops, there are function key combinations with the Fn button for this). On routers, you need to enter advanced settings and check if the wireless connection is enabled. If this does not help, you may need to change the channel (the easiest way to do this is with the automated Insider for Home utility.

Sometimes disabling encryption (authentication section) can help. To correct the situation, set the value to Open System. Finally, the key length may be a problem (section "WPA Preshared Key"). If its length exceeds 20 characters, the router with this key will not be able to work.

As for IP addresses and other settings, the properties of the default TCP/IP protocol should be set to receive them automatically. In the "Task Manager" you can try to reinstall the drivers and the corresponding controllers. You can also use dedicated driver update programs such as Driver Booster.

The computer does not see computers on the network: configuring group names

However, even with the correct settings, the situation may not change. Let's take an example when the computer does not see the local network. Most experts attribute this problem to incorrect group names, because Windows (most often XP) does not list existing local groups when creating a new connection, but by default sets its own new group (WORKGROUP).

The troubleshooting technique is to rename the group and the name of the local computer in it. To do this, in the "Control Panel" or in the computer's properties menu, enter the terminal name section, click the "Change" button and specify exactly the same name for the group and local computer as on the target terminal.

Using Static IP Addresses

Another problem with the local computer not seeing the computers on the network may be that the single terminal does not automatically retrieve the IP address settings and server settings.

To change them, you need to enter the menu of the active network connection and select the settings of the properties of the TCP / IP protocol (v4 or v6). Here, for each terminal, you need to specify IP addresses, gateway values, parameters of the preferred and alternative DNS server and uncheck the box for using a proxy for local addresses.

After that, by pressing the "Advanced" button, we go to a new window of parameters and in the WINS tab at the bottom we activate the NetBIOS over TCP / IP enable line.

Setting up system services

Another way to check the connection is to use the administration (management) section, where the "Services" item is selected. The easiest way to access it is through the Run console (Win + R), where the services.msc command is entered.

Here we use the line of services and applications, where in the additional section of services on the right we find the line of the computer browser. Make sure the startup type is set to automatic. If another parameter is specified, change it to activate the component.

Troubleshooting Firewall Issues

Finally, the problem that the local computer does not see computers on any type of network can be due to a self-imposed blocking by antivirus software that considers the connection to be invalid, or a firewall. With antiviruses, this situation is very rare, but you can try to disable the firewall.

To deactivate the standard Windows firewall, use the Security Center section in the Control Panel, where the firewall is disabled. If there is third-party software installed on the system, it is also recommended to deactivate it.

If you do not plan to disable the firewall, you can try creating a new rule for TCP / IP and add the corresponding connection or port to the exception list.

Therefore, the solution to such a popular problem will be relevant and useful to know for almost everyone who at least sometimes deals with computers or WiFi.

Connection problems - looking for the culprit

One of the most common obstacles that prevent a laptop from seeing a WiFi router is the unsuccessful launch of the WiFi module on it. It may even happen that the search for available networks turns on, all points are in range, but as soon as you try to join, the system gives a connection error. These and similar complications most often occur on computers with Windows 7, it is this system that is most likely to create problems with connecting to WiFi.

In addition to the fault of the computer, one should not exclude the possibility of a malfunction of the access point, i.e. router. Therefore, the first step is to determine what exactly provoked the problem, who is the culprit - a computer or a router? A simple and effective way to determine this is as follows:

  1. Find a second computer and try to connect to the access point from it.
  2. From the suspect computer, try to connect to various other points.

Thus, it should be found out which of the devices actually provoked the problem.

If one computer does not see the router, but other computers and mobile devices freely connect to it, then the problem is in this computer. Otherwise, if other devices are not able to connect to the router, and the rest of the access points do not cause any problems, you still have to deal with the router.

Checking drivers

In the case when WiFi does not connect due to the fault of the computer, the first thing to do is to check if the WiFi module is running and if all the drivers are installed on it.

To check the adapter, you need to go to Network Connections through the Control Panel and turn on the adapter.

To do this, open the Device Manager (Computer - Properties - Device Manager), look for it and open the "Network Adapters" subsection.

We check if there is a device there, in the name of which there are the words "Wireless Network Adapter", or "Wireless", or simply "Wi-Fi". You need to go to the "properties" and see if it works fine. (FIG. 1)

If such a device is missing or does not work correctly, and there are also unidentified devices, you need to reinstall their drivers. To do this, we find the website of the manufacturer of the laptop model, look for the appropriate Wireless Network Adapter driver on it, download it and install it.

Incorrect automatic detection of drivers by the system, or outdated drivers are a common case that can interfere with the correct operation of the wireless adapter.

Checking the operation of the adapter

Be sure to check if the wireless adapter is enabled on the laptop. As a rule, it is enabled / disabled by pressing a key combination, for example FN + F2. To make sure which buttons you need to press, find the key with the wireless network icon and press it simultaneously with the FN key, or refer to the user manual for this laptop model. Some laptops have a separate switch to turn WiFi on/off.

Another way to check if WiFi is enabled or not is through a network management program. From the Control Panel, go to the Network and Control Center, then select "Change adapter settings" on the left. A network adapters and connections window will open, in which you need to find "Wireless Network Connection". Right click on the connection icon. If there is an “Enable” item in the context menu that opens and the connection icon looks gray, click on “Enable”, the adapter should start.

Otherwise, if the icon is colored and there is a Disable item in the menu, it is recommended to restart the adapter, i.e. click on "Disable", wait a few seconds until the module turns off, and then enable it again. The connection icon in the notification area should look like the one in the screenshot. This means that the adapter is enabled and access points are found. If a similar icon appears, but a red cross is shown instead of a yellow asterisk, it means that the module is running, but no connection points were found.

It is also quite typical that the computer finds available WiFi points, but does not connect to them, instead, an attempt to connect causes the error “Windows could not connect”. But at present, there is no universal and unambiguous fix for this error. Quite often, the cause is incorrect router settings, such as incorrect security and encryption settings, or problems with the allocation of IP addresses.

One of the possible ways that helps out in many situations is to reboot the router and computer. In some cases, clicking the Troubleshoot link in the error message box helps fix the error. Another tip: go to the properties of the wireless adapter and prevent it from being turned off to save energy, because. the reason may be that the computer incorrectly manages the power of the WiFi module.

Quite often, a connection break occurs after the laptop wakes up from sleep or standby mode. This problem manifests itself mainly on Windows 7 and Windows 8 systems. In this case, the measure described above also helps, i.e. disable the adapter to save power. To do this, go to the Device Manager, in the network devices subsection we find the wireless adapter, go to its properties through the context menu. In the properties window, go to the "Power Management" tab and uncheck the box "Allow the device to turn off". Click OK and reboot the system.

A connection error will inevitably appear if the password and encryption type for automatic connection were saved in the WiFi connection properties on the laptop, and one or both of these parameters were changed on the router. In this case, the system will try to connect to the router with the old settings, which, accordingly, will not accept them and refuse to connect. The solution to the problem is to delete the network with the old parameters and connect using the new ones.

Checking the router configuration

You can enter the settings of the router through Network Connections, where we select the item “Network and Sharing Center”, then, if necessary, change the settings of the router.

In the same case, when the router is to blame, and rebooting does not help, there are several ways to fix the problem:

  1. Do not use auto channel detection, set it manually, check different channels.
  2. Change network type, frequency and region.
  3. Do not use Cyrillic characters in the password and SSID name.

Getting into the router settings is easy, for this you need to follow a few simple steps. First of all, the router must be connected to the computer with a network cable. It is possible to join via a wireless network, but it is not as reliable and secure as directly via cable. Then we open any Internet browser, enter the IP of the router in the address bar, usually it is 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, or you can find out more precisely in the instructions for the router or read it directly on the sticker on its body. By entering the address of the router, we get into its web interface.

To gain access, you must enter a name and password, usually they are the same: admin. Sometimes they may differ, this should be indicated in the same place as the address - in the instructions or on a sticker. Once in the settings, you must first try to set them in accordance with modern standards:

  • WPA/WPA2 security type;
  • WPA2-PSK version;
  • automatic encryption;
  • region of the USA or the Russian Federation.

It is recommended to change the WiFi hotspot name and password. Do not use Cyrillic, check your keyboard layout! Only Latin names and passwords work correctly, numbers are allowed. After finishing changing the parameters, you should reboot the router. After that, the new settings will take effect, you can delete the old saved connection on the laptop and all other devices that connected to the router earlier, and try to connect again.

  • The most common reason why a laptop does not see WiFi is that the laptop's wireless adapter is turned off. It can be turned off systemically, by a combination of buttons on the keyboard or in the wireless networks menu. It is also possible to physically turn off by means of a button on the laptop case.

The difficulty when your laptop does not see WiFi is also solved. Suppose the device does not find the router's network, but sees signals from a neighboring office or building without difficulty. Why laptop ⁄ computer does not see the WiFi network

I note that there may be several reasons, and we will start with the primary one: the work of the router itself.   1. your device simply does not see any of the Wi-Fi networks (they are not displayed as available) - let's call it error 1;
  2. your device sees neighboring Wi-Fi networks, namely yours does not find - error 2.
  • A hardware error pops up (i.e. network board error). In this case, your device does not see the wireless wifi adapter because it is either broken or there is a problem with its drivers.
  • The network equipment driver is not installed (we check the driver in the Device Manager tab, in the Properties folder). If necessary, install the driver or reinstall the software (from the disk or from the manufacturer's website).
  • The wireless connection is turned off (we check in the network and control center in the Wireless network tab or the Wireless network connection tab).
  • The Wi-Fi module does not work (in case of a malfunction, the module must be replaced).
  • Software failure or other problems (the help of a specialist may already be required here).

If you find out that your error 2, to eliminate it, use the change of the channel of the Wi-Fi network.

Regular connection failures may indicate that the problem lies in the phone settings themselves. The solution can be a complete reset to factory settings. This will usually require you to go to Settings and open the Security tab. After rebooting the phone, try to find the Wi-Fi network on a new one.

As you can see, there can be quite a few reasons for the lack of a Wi-Fi network, but the ones mentioned above are the most common and, in principle, should help.

Physical reasons include the following.

  1. Breakdown of the LAN interface with high voltage (for example, lightning over a twisted pair cable passing over the roofs of private houses). This also includes static electricity during maintenance of LAN/ONT equipment (accidental contact with electrified clothing leads and bare wires of repaired cables).
  2. Power failure of the router (using an adapter with a significantly higher output voltage, for example, from a laptop). At best, this will cause the voltage regulator to burn out, from which all other functional nodes of the router are powered. In the cheapest models of routers, the entire board can burn out - such a router is immediately changed.
  3. Failure of wireless communication in the router due to overheating of the Wi-Fi radio subsystem chip or the processor on the router monoboard.
  4. Lack of power supply (“sagging” power supply when using a home-made or industrial backup power system, for example, several PowerBank devices connected in series by output voltage until the desired supply voltage is obtained). Lack of power (planned power outages, the adapter plug is not plugged into the socket, the adapter itself is out of order).
  5. Internal short circuits or wear during operation in conditions of high humidity and extreme temperature fluctuations.
  6. Damage to LAN cables (if LAN communication is via cable), loose and bent pins of LAN jacks in the router and in the network card of the PC / laptop.

The software reasons are as follows.

  1. Router freezing due to overheating caused by working in extremely hot conditions. The reason may also be the natural wear and tear of the flash memory of the router and other microcircuits after many years of intensive work.
  2. Ingress of malicious code over a LAN connection or via Wi-Fi from a PC that changes settings. Only reinstalling the version of Windows on a PC or tablet, from which the virus entered the firmware of the router, and flashing the router itself with its reconfiguration will help here.
  3. Viral activity in the PC/laptop/tablet/smartphone itself, capable of seriously disrupting the operation of Windows/Android. OS in this case is reinstalled "from scratch".
  4. The abundance of programs used simultaneously that slowed down the work of the PC / gadget.

Checking the integrity and correct connection of LAN cables

Most routers, such as TP-Link devices, have up to several LAN ports and one WAN port ("provider" input). There are two schemes for organizing a small local area network with general access to the Internet.

Whichever scheme you prefer, the network cables must be connected correctly. If something is mixed up, connect the cables according to one of these schemes and configure the router for its features.

Also pay attention to the integrity of the cable crimp in the RJ-45 connectors.

Do not cut the sheath outside of the connector retainer

Perhaps one of the wires is lagging behind - this is fraught with Windows error messages ("Restricted access", endless "Identification" or "Unidentified network" - even if the settings are correct everywhere and the router with the modem / terminal is 100% working).

If the PC does not connect via LAN, check if the router is visible from other PCs and laptops (if any).

  1. If the connection is successful, check if the LAN adapter is enabled on this PC, and also coordinate its connection settings with the router settings on the router itself.

Replacing network cables

Depending on where and which cable is "broken", appropriate repair of the damaged line is needed.

A “twisted pair” with a simple break can be repaired by restoring the interlacing of wires (for example, the turn pitch of the “orange” pair differs from the pitch of the “green” or “blue” pair) as accurately as possible, as if the cable had not been damaged.

If the cable is so damaged that its use is impossible (the sheath is broken, the insulation of individual wires is worn or cracked from old age and extreme temperatures, the interlacing of pairs is broken in many places), a new cable is required. Or, if it is impossible to “forward” a new cable (there are no conditions, work is prohibited, etc.), and there are only one or two places of damage, special LAN adapters and simple switches for 3 LAN sockets are used.

Especially often cables break and crack, in which not pure copper, but copper-plated aluminum is used as a conductive medium, the cable sheath and wire insulation are not polyethylene or PVC, but plastic compound with chalk.

The best Cat-5e cable is made entirely of copper wires, and each wire is a cable of the thinnest "veins", often with lavsan filler; cable insulation and sheath are made of heat-resistant plastic. Such a cable is used for street laying, it is resistant to repeated kinks, overheating and hypothermia, it will last for many years - but it also costs 2-3 times more. If you are used to investing in high-quality equipment and lines, creating a network for many years - use the best.

If it costs nothing to crimp LAN connectors and solder a broken twisted pair, then entrust the repair / replacement of optical cables to the specialists of your provider. Fiber optics are not copper wires: the slightest mistake due to inexperience will turn your 300-megabit connection from Rostelecom or Dom.ru into a slow connection, where even browser pages will barely open, as on overloaded 3G peak hours -networks. Even if you have a special soldering iron for splicing fiber optic cores, you need skill.

Using other routers

If you have a router of another brand (when you changed it to the current one, now out of order) - connect it. Users who part-time engage in computer service most likely have equipment that was once decommissioned, which they use to diagnose failed routers and network cards brought in for repair by their clients.

You can buy a used router or access point (a model that is several years old)if you do not want to spend money on a new device. It is connected and configured in the same way as your previous device. Fairly outdated models may not have a WAN interface (and related settings), as well as operating modes in bridge and repeater mode (a simple Wi-Fi access point with a LAN router without numerous settings), so it is used as the simplest LAN switch. Connect your LAN cables in the same sequence, complete the settings on the device and go online.

Resetting the router to factory settings
