Galaxy Tab a series T 80. Samsung tablets

Last year, Samsung introduced three main lines of tablets to the market: the top-end Galaxy Tab S2, the “mid-range” Galaxy Tab A and the budget Galaxy Tab E. The Galaxy Tab A line became the most controversial. These tablets had fairly good hardware, but were equipped with low-resolution screens, made in a plastic case, and had a very simple design. Despite the worse parameters, the Galaxy Tab E line looked more interesting, and Samsung decided to “work on the bugs.” In 2016, Samsung introduced an inexpensive 7-inch model Galaxy Tab A 7.0 (2016), which was originally planned to be released as the Galaxy Tab E 7.0, followed by the 10-inch tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T585, which we are talking about today and let's talk. Let us note that this is far from a budget device. This is justified by the fact that this tablet has pretty good hardware, it is equipped with a high-quality screen, and also has impressive performance and battery life.

Design

Samsung started seriously thinking about changing the design of its devices in 2014, starting with the Galaxy Alpha smartphone. A little later, the design of tablets was also changed, including the Galaxy A line. Despite the fact that from a design point of view, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″ is similar to its predecessors, something about it is radically different. Taking the tablet in your hands, you immediately understand what makes it different: there is a very thin frame around the screen, and the buttons are placed on the narrow side, which implies more frequent use of the tablet in portrait orientation. Thin bezels make the 10.1-inch tablet smaller and fit better in your hands. Compared to the Galaxy Tab A 9.7, the tablet has become narrower, but has gained height, thickness and weight. If everything is clear with the height (Samsung returned the previous screen aspect ratio of 16:10), then the thickness (8.2 mm) and weight (525 grams) can be attributed to the battery capacity increasing from 6000 to 7300 mAh.
Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″ is made in a completely plastic case and comes in one of three colors: black, white and dark blue.
As for the build quality, there are no complaints here. Due to the fact that the tablet is made in a non-separable case, it does not creak or play anywhere.

Controls and Connectors

In terms of layout, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″ is a fairly standard tablet. On the front panel above the screen there is a front camera lens and the manufacturer's logo; there is no speaker.
Below, under the screen, there are three familiar buttons: the mechanical “Home” and the touch “Task Manager” and “Back”. The buttons are not backlit.
At the top of the back panel is the main camera, next to which you can see the flash. It would seem, what's special about this? And the fact that the Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 is the first Samsung tablet whose camera is supplemented with a flash. Even the flagship Galaxy Tab S2 doesn't have it.
On the right side of the tablet there is a power button, a volume rocker and two compartments: one for a memory card, and the other for a SIM card.
There are no elements on the left side of the tablet.
The compartments are covered with folding caps. The memory card and SIM card are inserted inside until a characteristic click is heard. Note that a nanoSIM format card is used for communication.
On the bottom edge of the tablet there are two fairly loud speakers, and on the top end there is a 3.5 mm audio jack, a microUSB port and a microphone. In general, the ergonomics of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″ are all right. Separately, it is worth noting that on the back of the tablet there are magnets for a branded case.

Display

As we already said, the main drawback of the previous Samsung Galaxy Tab A line was the low display resolution. The screen itself was of high quality, had good brightness and large viewing angles, but the resolution of 1024x768 was clearly not enough. As a result, the display on the 10-inch model was quite grainy and had a PPI value of 132, which is only slightly higher than most desktop monitors and laptops. But we need to take into account that we usually look at the monitor from a greater distance, so graininess is not as noticeable as on a tablet. “Last year’s” tablets had a screen aspect ratio of 4:3, and in the Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″ the company returned to the “elongated” display geometry of 16:10, thanks to which it was able to provide a resolution of 1920x1200 pixels without unnecessary difficulties, while the density screen is 224 ppi. The tablet's display has definitely improved, making it more competitive in its price category. Unfortunately, the tablet uses a PLS screen, which is far from a Super AMOLED matrix, but overall the display looks pretty good. For reference, the PLS matrix is a development by Samsung, which is an analogue of IPS technology from LG. This matrix provides natural colors, wide viewing angles, and decent color rendition. The maximum screen brightness in the Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″ reaches 408.45 cd/m2, which is an excellent indicator for a tablet. The black color is not as deep as we would like - 0.45 cd/m2, so in the dark it looks somewhat grayish. The screen contrast is good, but not record-breaking: 908:1.
The screen's color gamut covers the sRGB color space almost perfectly, all colors are displayed correctly. The gamma curve also looks very good. At the bottom it drops slightly below the 2.2 reference curve, which means dark parts of the image are rendered slightly darker than intended. But this is unlikely to be noticeable to the eye.
The display easily recognizes up to 10 simultaneous touches, and has fairly standard settings. It’s nice that Samsung didn’t remove automatic brightness control, as in inexpensive smartphones with AMOLED screens. So, we can give this verdict to the display of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″: high-quality, with high resolution and excellent color rendition. If we compare the Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 with previous models, its screen has become much better.

"Stuffing" of the tablet

In 2016, Samsung decided to reconsider its line of tablets. Thus, the “successor” of the Galaxy Tab E series did not appear on the market, and the 7-inch Galaxy Tab A 7.0 became the most budget-friendly. Together with it, the company presented our Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″. The company should also present the Galaxy Tab S3 approximately in late summer or early autumn. Compared to the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 9.7, the hardware of the Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″ tablet has been significantly improved. Not only the screen has changed, but also the processor, camera, and the battery capacity has also increased. The tablet’s performance is driven by the Samsung Exynos 7870 processor, which is noticeably stronger than what was installed in “last year’s” model. The same processor is used in the Galaxy J7 (2016) smartphone and shows good performance. The chipset consists of 8 Cortex-A53 cores operating at 1.6 GHz. At the same time, a modern 14-nm technical process is used for its manufacture, thanks to which the chipset does not heat up and has low power consumption. The Mali-T830 MP2 graphics processor, which can be classified as a mid-class accelerator, is responsible for processing graphics in the tablet. The tablet uses 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of flash memory, which is a common indicator for budget devices. In general, based on the combination of processor, display, memory, camera and battery characteristics, the Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″ is a fairly balanced tablet.

Synthetic tests and games

Now let's see how the Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″ tablet is superior in performance to “last year’s” Galaxy Tab A 9.7.

The tablet can handle most modern games without any problems, and thanks to the large screen, playing on it is a pleasure. We installed games such as: Riptide GP2, Modern Combat 5, N.O.V.A. 3, Dead Trigger 2, Real Racing 3, Need For Speed: No Limits, Shadowgun: Dead Zone, Frontline Commando: Normandy, Frontline Commando 2, Eternity Warriors 4, Trial Xtreme 4, Dead Effect 2 and Dead Target. The tablet did not slow down in any game.

Communication capabilities

If we talk about the communication capabilities of the tablet, we can note support for Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11n, the LTE standard, which is not yet available in our country, as well as GPS and GLONASS. The Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″ finds satellites very quickly, making it quite suitable for use as a car or pedestrian navigator. In addition, the tablet, like most other Samsung devices, has DLNA support, which allows you to display images on the TV screen via Wi-Fi.

Cameras

For some reason unknown to us, Samsung does not pay enough attention to tablet cameras. Even the expensive Galaxy Tab S2 has a rather average camera and is not equipped with a flash. Considering all of the above, it’s nice that the Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″ tablet is an exception to these rules. Compared to the 2015 Galaxy Tab A, the camera resolution of the Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 has increased from 5 to 8 megapixels, and a flash has also been added.
The tablet uses the camera application familiar to other Samsung products. There are several modes, including the Pro mode, where parameters such as white balance, light sensitivity and exposure compensation can be adjusted. The maximum shooting resolution is achieved with an aspect ratio of 4:3. The camera allows you to take pretty good photos, and if you compare them with images obtained using other tablets, the photos can safely be called good. The best photos come out during the day, in good weather. On a sunny day they are sharp and have the correct white balance. When there is not enough light, the camera sometimes misses focusing, and the clarity of the pictures drops noticeably. Examples of photos taken with the main camera:

The tablet shoots video at a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, while the 2015 Galaxy Tab A was only capable of 1280x720 resolution.

The front camera in the tablet is 2 megapixel. It doesn’t have as many settings as the main one, but it doesn’t really need them. Examples of photos taken using the front camera:

Software

Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″ is the company’s first tablet with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. The Galaxy Tab A 7.0 (2016), released just a few months earlier, was deprived of this privilege - it runs on the Android 5.1 operating system. In general, the external interface of the tablet is similar to the interface of the previous version of Android. This similarity can be seen primarily due to the fact that all Samsung mobile devices use the TouchWIZ shell, which in Android 6.0 Marshmallow was only slightly repainted and slightly modernized, leaving without any fundamental changes. Despite the fact that in most cases the tablet is used in portrait mode, its software is perfectly configured for landscape orientation. One of the most noticeable and pleasant changes in the TouchWIZ shell for Android 6.0 Marshmallow is the ability to “pull down” the Quick Settings panel. A pleasant surprise was the presence of Galaxy Essentials and Galaxy Gift sections in the Galaxy Gifts store in the Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″. They can usually be seen on fairly expensive Samsung devices, from which we can conclude that Samsung classifies this tablet as at least middle class. In these sections you can find some additional software, as well as subscriptions to various publications and services.
The operating system runs in 64-bit mode. In general, due to excellent optimization, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″ interface does not slow down and works without any glitches.

Battery, autonomy

In terms of battery life, we were very pleased with the Samsung tablet. The Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″ has a 7300 mAh battery, which is enough for 2-3 days of operation under medium loads.

The greatest energy consumption, as usual, occurred in 3D games, while all other tasks consume very little power. The proprietary Smart Manager utility is responsible for optimizing the operation of the tablet and its system, and accordingly, the battery consumption. If you want to achieve maximum autonomy, you can turn on the extreme power saving mode.

Pros and cons of the tablet

Pros of Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″:+ High-quality screen; + Quite productive “filling”; + Latest version of Android: + 8 megapixel main camera with flash; + Good autonomy Cons of Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″:— Plastic case; — Lack of backlighting of touch buttons.

Conclusion

In our opinion, Samsung has managed to create a well-balanced tablet. Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″ has a modern design, high-quality build and good battery life. It's great that the company listened to customers and increased the tablet's screen resolution, as well as its performance. Thanks to all this, the Galaxy Tab A SM-T585 10.1″ can handle most modern games, and its interface works smoothly, without any jerks or glitches. Perhaps someone will say that a model with similar parameters from another manufacturer can be found cheaper, but it is important that the tablet’s hardware be well balanced with its software, which not every manufacturer can do. Samsung is now the leader in mobile technology and is a company you can trust.

I have been “using” this tablet, so to speak, for a month now and now I will try to describe all my impressions of using it. The thing is that closer to summer I had a need to find a worthy replacement for my budget 7-inch old LG G Pad 7.0 v400. I tried to look for more or less tablets in the mid-price segment (that is, not budget ones) with a larger screen and better performance and smoother operation. Basically, I was thinking in the direction of tablets from Samsung (since I’ve been dealing with the 2013 flagship Galaxy S4 for more than two years and, in principle, I’m happy with everything, and, moreover, I know that with the latest Samsung tablets, users also have a special there are no critical complaints), and, moreover, among other manufacturers I could not find anything worthwhile for myself. There was a variant from the series released in 2015, namely the Tab A (8.0 or 9.7 inches). Everything is good, but their screen resolution is “very not very good” (especially on 9.7 inches - 1024x768, you see, it’s not enough). And then, quite by accident, I saw a brand new tablet from 2016, Samsung Galaxy Tab A(6) 10.1", looked at its characteristics, the first reviews of it and reviews about it, and, in principle, I really liked everything. I couldn’t “use” it in the store, since it was on order, so I took a chance and ordered it for myself (in blue). Arrived quite quickly, in 9 days, thanks for this M-Video. And I want to say that this tablet more than met all my expectations. The first tactile contact with this tablet was very pleasant, although the body is completely plastic, it is made very well. The screen quality, traditionally for Samsung, is excellent, especially the Full HD resolution (1920x1080), which is very good. I was also pleased with Android 6.0 on board and the TouchWiz interface on top of it - the smoothness of operation is simply excellent, during the entire time of use I did not notice a single slightest stutter (by the way, I still don’t understand those people who “hate” Samsung for its “lagging interface” - understand , TouchWiz has long since changed for the better; it now doesn’t have +100500 unnecessary programs and minute-long delays when entering the “application menu” - although I also greatly exaggerated this about the “old” touchwiz). Moreover, I am very pleased with the already built-in set of office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and a gift from Samsung in the form of 100GB for 2 years in OneDrive. There are no complaints about the sound either - two high-quality speakers at the end of the tablet, producing a fairly loud and clear sound. The overall performance did not let us down - smooth operation in everyday applications and in not particularly resource-intensive games is ensured by 100%; I have not particularly tried heavier games. The camera is simply superb, 8MP + autofocus, and even a flash - photos and videos turn out simply excellent (by the standards of tablets, which have not been customary to install super cool cameras on for a long time)! The battery is 7+ thousand mAh, with my average use it lasts for 3-5 days, which is not bad at all. As additions, we can’t help but rejoice at the slot for nano-SIM (support for hands-free calls or through headphones and mobile Internet) and a separate slot for micro-SD. As for the minuses, I can note the inconvenience of standard navigation keys from Samsung (mechanical “Home” and two touch ones “Back” and “Application Manager”) - firstly, since I often use the tablet in landscape orientation, the location of these keys in portrait orientation is not is always convenient (however, this is not critical), and secondly, the touch keys, unfortunately, are not backlit. Also, the prices for official accessories, namely the case from Samsung, are not encouraging). I ordered an unofficial case on Aliexpress at a cheaper price, it came with a film and a stylus as a gift (thanks to the Chinese for that). Look like that's it! Overall, the tablet is truly a powerful workhorse, which is also perfectly suitable for entertainment - watching movies, surfing the web and playing games!

The SAR level indicates the maximum amount of electromagnetic radiation to which the human body is exposed when holding a mobile device at hip level. The highest permissible SAR value in the USA is 1.6 W/kg per 1 gram of human tissue. This value is set by the FCC, and the CTIA monitors mobile devices' compliance with this standard.

It seems that recently the South Korean manufacturer Samsung has been working hard on creating its flagship Galaxy S7. Probably for this reason there was almost not enough time to update the tablet catalog. And why, because the company has many offers for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 (2015) tablet or the slightly larger Galaxy Tab S2 9.7. Be that as it may, the first new items began to appear: we are talking about Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7.0 (2016).

What's new

This model will attract the attention of fans of seven-inch tablets. Thin, lightweight, won't take up much space in your shoulder bag. Due to the fact that the back is textured, it not only fits comfortably in the hand due to its dimensions, but also does not slip out. Smooth outlines and rounded corners make the design ergonomic, which is important for a device whose dimensions are larger than mobile phones.

But the main feature is not the design: it is quite ordinary and unremarkable for its time. First of all Samsung Galaxy Tab (2016) The category of users who have already switched to LTE Internet will want it. It supports nano SIM cards, which allow the tablet to work in LTE. True, there are cheaper modifications that only support Wi-Fi.

Technical capabilities

The display is made using IPS LCD technology, which means that the picture quality should be at a good level. As for the platform, the device runs on Qualcomm MSM8916, that is, on the 410th 1.3 GHz Snapdragon. Adreno 306 is responsible for video. There are 1.5 gigabytes of RAM, which is quite typical for mid-segment Samsung Android devices. As for the permanent memory, there are 8 gigabytes of it. Fortunately, microSD cards are supported, which can improve the situation. There is also a five-megapixel camera with autofocus. Another nice feature is GPS with glonass function. In general, like most tabs. As for the operating system, we can say that it supports Android 5.1.1, which has already begun to be slowly supplanted by the sixth version, but in general has not lost its relevance. In any case, at an affordable price, the new product will be an excellent choice for users of compact tablets.
