Comes Map Lite (RBmapl-2ND) in a box of the already familiar cardboard for Mikrotik, though its design is somewhat different from other products of the company. In addition to the router itself, in the kit there is a power supply with a microUSB plug, an informational leaflet and a metal plate, which we will tell a little later.

The first thing amazing is the size, Map Lite is not just small, it is very small. For comparison, we took a fairly popular 3G TP-LINK TL-MR3020 model.

Even on the background of the TL-MR3020, the novelty from Mikrotik looks very compact. What is already there, Map Lite (RBMAPL-2ND) is noticeably less than its older fellow in the face of Map. Something, of course, I had to donate: the Lite-version lost the second network port, and the only remaining remaining was replaced by a special modification used in ultrabooks (thin laptops). Unfortunately, there is no USB support, and sorry, because the processor itself supports USB, and the same 3G / 4G modem could be connected using an OTG cable.

map Lite on the background of a modern smartphone with a diagonal 4.7 "

On the other hand, when using microUSB for an external modem, the power would have to be supplied by PoE, and for this, at least the injector and standard power supply with DC Jack would be required. Therefore, weighing everything in advance, as well as the cost of the device, any claims to the absence of a USB port disappear by themselves.

As you already understood, with a standard configuration, the device receives from a standard power supply to 5V via the microUSB port, just like the HAP Lite. In this case, the network port also supports PoE in, and not only the standard Passive PoE, but also 802.3at / af. In addition, the device supports a wide range of incoming PoE voltage from 10 to 60V, which allows you to connect it to any MIKROTIK device with POE OUT support.

The top panel has 4 indicators: PWR, AP / CAP, ETH and WiFi. The presence of the CAP indicator will be very useful in cases where Map Lite (RBMAPL-2ND) will be used in conjunction with the controller.

Near the network interface there is a multifunction WPS / MODE / RESET button.

Pay attention to the rhombus on the rear panel of the device, it is a special recess for the metal plate, which is included. The fact is that Map Lite (RBMAPL-2ND) is quite lightweight, so engineers equipped it with a magnet for fastening on a metal base. If the basis is not metallic - a metal plate is entering the game, on the one hand it has a protruding rhombus, for even fixation on Map Lite, on the other hand, bilateral tape is glued.

The blue coating on the plate is a transporting polyethylene, which prevents scratching, after gluing the plate, before use, it must be removed. Map Lite is fixed quite reliably, and removed quickly and easily.

Hardware implement Map Lite (RBMAPL-2ND)

In order to disassemble the device, certain skills and a special tool will be required, moreover, when disassembling, you can damage the board and lose the warranty. For those who are interested in the internships of the novelty, we specifically disassembled Map Lite (RBMAPL-2ND).

It's time to look inside the housing.

The inner part of the housing is used as a maximum, free space, as such. From above, the processor is glued to the thermal package to improve heat removal from the chip. On the reverse side of the board at the site of the processor soldering, a headpoint is installed slightly larger size, which further prevents the contact of the magnets with a printed circuit board, which can lead to a closure.

The basis of the system is the Wisoc chip ATHEROS QCA9533 (QCA9533-BL3A, the MIPS 24KC V7.4 architecture) made by Qualcomm with a working frequency of 650 MHz. For this chip, the standard frequency is 560 MHz, so 650 MHz is a small factory overclocking. There is no reason for concern, because Other Mikrotik products on QCA9531 / 9533 have a similar CPU frequency: Hap Lite, Hap Lite Tc, Hap, Wap, Hex Lite, Hex PoE Lite, SXT Lite 5 AC, PowerBox.

QCA9531 / 9533 is characterized by good performance, low power consumption and heat dissipation. In other solutions with a spacious case, the processor heating is practically not felt. Map Lite, in turn, has a compact body, and the processor is in contact with the housing, so the heating is felt when working. It is possible to characterize it as "above average." Considering the configuration of the device (only 1 network port), the processor frequency can be safely reduced to 550 MHz through Winbox, the heating of the chip will be lower, and it will practically not affect performance.

About the size of the RBMAPL-2ND PCB fee you can sue yourself, looking at the photo below:

The amount of RAM is 64 MB (Nanya NT5TU32M16EG-AC chip, 512 Mbps, DDR2-800 SDRAM), which is unusual for a device with such positioning. Permanent memory has a volume of 16 MB (WinBond 25Q128FVSG chip, 128 Mbps, Flash), which is a well-established standard for almost all devices of the lower and medium price segment.

Both antennas are internal, implemented by etching on the board, according to the official Datasheet, the gain of 1.5 dBi. In general, technical implementation causes pleasant impressions.

The first inclusion of Map Lite, operating modes

In our test configuration, MAP Lite was connected with a cable to the 5th port of the Mikrotik RB951UI-2HND router, i.e. The access point was posted on the classic Passive PoE.

After switching on, an open Mikrotik-XXXXXX wireless network appeared, and it is necessary to connect to it to adjust the access point.

By default, the devices on Routeros have a local IP 192.168.88.1, Admin login, empty password. The first thing should be updated to the latest version of Routeros, at the time of writing this version is version 6.34.1. For new devices, updates often come out, our model is not an exception.

The default settings suggest automatic channel selection and support for all 802.11 b / g / n standards. To carry out tests, the channel is selected manually, and the security type with Open changes to WPA2 + AES.

The device runs running Routeros with the 4th license level, therefore provides high flexibility of settings. In addition to the two standard Router modes (router) and Bridge (bridge), the QuickSet quick setup panel is available as many as 5 operating modes.

By default, the WISP AP mode is used - the access point mode with advanced settings is also present, the HOME AP mode is also a simplified AP setup mode. To use, together with the CAPSMAN controller, a CAP mode is provided (controlled access point), which makes Map Lite Mikrotik one of the most affordable solutions for building a wireless network in the hotel rooms.

To connect to a remote wireless network, a CPE mode is provided. The last mode is unexpected enough - PTP Bridge, i.e. The mode of creating a wireless bridge between two devices.

Testing Map Lite.

As mentioned earlier, Map Lite was originally connected to RB951UI-2HND (5th port with PoE Out). On the local RB951 network (subnet 106.0 / 24), there was a PC connected via twisted pair, the JPERF server was launched on it. A second PC with an external Netis WF2190 adapter (RealTek 8812AU chip, external antennas, MIMO 2x2: 2) was connected to the Map Lite wireless network (subnet 88.0 / 24).

Thus, when establishing a connection between PK1 and PK2, a wireless module is activated, and traffic goes between the local and external network (WLAN / LAN<=> WAN), i.e. Traffing routing (routing).

When exchanging TCP packages, the maximum speed on average was 93-94 Mbps (both PCs in one room), the loading of the processor was an average of 30%. As you can see, the reserve on the processor is quite large.

Under the exchange of UDP packages, the speed reached an average of 115 Mbps, which is not surprising because This protocol has features, and the wireless network maintains a channel speed of 300 Mbps. For the third test, Map Lite and the PC connected to it, were separated for a certain distance, to be more accurate - by 8-9 meters. In addition, there were 3 walls between them: the first major brick, the second 1 brick, the third plaster.

The presence of obstacles and interference is the problem of all access points without exception. The total speed decreased to the level of 25-40 Mbps. When working with conventional laptops, the speed will be lower, because For the test, we used a powerful external USB adapter.

In the fourth test, both PCs were in the same room, but both were connected to the Map Lite wireless network.

The average speed in such a configuration is 44 Mbps. The speed will change if both PCs are out of sight of each other (in the wireless module settings, it is recommended to enable the "RTS CTS" option).

Finally

Mikrotik engineers once again managed to present an interesting product. Map Lite is distinguished by a democratic price and a good feature. How to use it - to solve you, because despite your sizes, this baby is equipped with a good processor and runs running Routeros Level 4, which opens up ample opportunities for configuring. The list of possibilities we have already been listed above. Already, we can talk about the fact that Map Lite is one of the best budget products of the company, at the level with HAP Lite.

Configuration can be performed via a WINBOX web browser or Windows software. It is most convenient to do this through Winbox, because the program can connect to the device not only by the IP address, but also by the MAC address.

Sometimes after resetting the device to factory settings, it is not assigned a standard IP address 192.168.88.1. In this case, you must connect to the MAC address device using the Winbox program and apply the standard configuration.

The article will add configuration using Winbox. Setup via a web browser is performed in a similar way.

Connect Wi-Fi Points to Computer

First, connect the wireless point to the computer via PoE injector, as shown in the figure. After setting up the Wi-Fi point, you can turn off the computer and connect to the router or switch.

Setting up a network card computer

To get into the Wi-Fi settings of the Mikrotik point, you must configure the computer's network card to the IP address from one subnet, for example 192.168.88.21 .

Open Start → Control Panel → Network Management Center and Shared Access.

Right-click on LAN connection and select Properties.

Open the menu on the left Quick Set..

In the window that appears, we will configure the Wi-Fi Mikrotik point to receive the Internet from another wireless point.

Selection of work mode

First in the upper left corner choose mode CPE(client).

In chapter Configuration. You must select the network mode.

Mode Router. - Use when connected to a Wi-Fi point or base station provider and want to hide customers who will be per point in a separate subnet. Otherwise, each client would need to conclude an agreement with the Internet connection provider. In this mode, the provider does not see subscribers who are behind the client Wi-Fi point. The wireless point plays the role of the router (Internet gateway) for customers.

Customer Wi-Fi Point Allows you to connect only one computer over the cable. But if you connect a Wi-Fi router to the device, then you can distribute the Internet on Wi-Fi and on a cable to several subscribers (computers, smartphones, phones).

If you use a Wi-Fi point to connect to a neighbor Wi-Fi router, we recommend using Router mode. There are situations where in Bridge mode, the client point connects to a Wi-Fi router and receives automatic network settings, but the computer cannot receive settings and access the Internet. In this case, use the Router mode.

Mode Bridge- Using when you need to see all devices behind the client Wi-Fi point. In this case, all subscribers are in the same network and can transmit data to each other.

For example, you have a main office and several remote warehouses that need to be combined into a common computer network. For this task, Bridge is more suitable. When using this mode, the central router of the company will distribute automatic network settings to all computers on the network, including remote warehouses.

Configuring operation in Router mode

In chapter Configuration. Select Operating Mode Router..

If your provider provides network settings automatically by DHCP, then in the section Wireless Network.

  • Address Acquisition - Choose Automatic..

Solving Connection Problems

In the latest firmware in the Quick Set menu, the CPE client mode is buggy. The problem is that QuickSet does not properly saves a password to connect to a Wi-Fi point. In this case, you will see that the device is constantly in search of the network with Status: Searching for Network, as it shown on the picture.

In the logs there will be error messages Mic Failure (14)as in the picture below.

To fix this do the following:

The modern development of the wireless communication led to the fact that many people, planning a home or apartment repair, will not organize a wired low-voltage wiring for network switching, and use Wi-Fi capabilities. However, there are often situations where a cable connection is needed for a specific device.

When moving to a new apartment, I found that it completely lacks a low-current layout or any sockets "under the Internet", but did not give it values, because All my devices work perfectly with Wi-Fi. But faced with the need to solve this problem when I decided to install the old Smart TV at home without Wi-Fi module and the old satellite receiver, on which with a non-working complete USB-WiFi adapter.

The device came to the rescue. Attention attracted that the power of the device can be carried out not only by Passive PoE or PoE 802.3AF / AT (PoE +), but also with the USB port. The incoming voltage of the device is only 5 V! The convenience is that Map Lite can be powered by a regular USB-Microusb Data cable from any USB connector, which has food! As a router, I also decided to use Mikrotik, "By air" using Map Lite, connecting a satellite receiver and a TV to it, while. Important: Devices running Routeros support Station Bridge mode, which allows pass-through passage of traffic without having to configure NAT on the client device. All this makes it possible to connect to your wireless network any device that is not equipped with a Wi-Fi module - without laying cables, without using additional electrical outlets, and with minimal cost!

Configuring a device for connecting to a WiFi-network is very simple. For example, we will implement all settings using Winbox.

To begin with, you will connect to the device according to the short manual and execute the full reset of the device - System → Reset Configuration.

After the first connection, you open the Bridge menu and add a new bridge interface.

Now it is necessary that the device receives the network settings (address, DNS, gateway), from our central router. To do this, we turn on the DHCP-Client function on the Breez Created Interface: Open IP → DHCP Client and click "Add". You need to make sure that the interface created Bridge is selected in the Interface field.

Next, connect our device to the common network. To do this, first, you need to specify the key that is necessary for connecting to Wi-Fi: open the "Wireless" menu on the left, the Security Profiles tab and add a new security profile. In the profile, you must fill in the field with the key and select the security modes are currently available for connecting to your network.

We perform connection to the network: Open the "Interfaces" tab and double click open the network interface settings; Open the "Wireless" tab and press the SCAN button. Then press the "Start" button. When the Wi-Fi network is displayed in the field below, select the left button to your network and click "Connect". After that, you need to check that the device works in Station-Bridge mode (Mode \u003d Station Bridge).

"Final barcode": Select the security profile with our name in the Security Profile field.
