Russian letters in the Latin layout for the password. Keyboard layout and language switching in Windows

Pretty common situation. Let's imagine that you specified a password from the Russian keyboard layout in English or Russian Windows. And it seems to be okay, but if you can’t change the layout in the Windows login window, then how can you enter the password and get into the long-awaited system?

Ordinary ASCII will help solve this problem. Yes, yes, you have them too, you don’t need to go anywhere.

All operating systems natively support international ASCII characters. This means that we have the opportunity to enter characters from a different layout, even if it is not installed. That is, if the layout is only English, it will not hurt to enter characters in Russian. Beauty!

Entering a password on this screen without the desired layout is easy

To enter an ASCII character, press and hold the key , then (without releasing it) press the key 0 (zero) on the numeric keypad and then immediately enter the desired value.

How to enter an ASCII character

Let's test it right now. Select the Russian layout (RU) in Windows. Let's try, without changing it, to enter the English letter "Q".

To do this, we perform the following steps in sequence. First, of course, open any text editor, in general, an area, even ICQ, where the character will be entered.

  1. .
  2. Press and hold a key 0 .
  3. Without releasing these two keys, press 81 .

As you can see, the capital letter Q has appeared. This gives us the opportunity to enter the password in any layout without any problems.

It is not necessary to type numbers on the numeric keypad - it's just more convenient. But you can use the regular keys of the top row of the keyboard without any problems.

Now let's try the other way around - select the English layout (EN) and enter the Russian letter "Г".

All steps are the same as last time, just enter the number this time 195 . Right after you let go , the capital letter we need will appear.

As you can see, all you need to know is the number of the required symbol. It is not difficult to find it - the following table will help us with this.

Now you will not have any problems with entering passwords if the layout suddenly “glitches”, or you did not select it at the installation stage.

The question in the title is not from the realm of fantasy, it is one of some aspects of computer literacy. Probably, you have come across a situation when people on the forums or somewhere in the comments begin to write their reasoning in Russian in English letters.

For example, it might look like this: “privet! U menya vse otlichno, kazhdiy den’ vstrechi:) Pogoda u nas tozhe zamechatel’naya, tol’ko blizhe k nochi stanovitsya prohladno.”

Or the same: “Hello! Everything is fine with me, we meet every day :) Our weather is also wonderful, only it gets cooler closer to the night.”

Such texts, especially if they are long, are tiring to read. And some do not read them at all, because they do not want to strain with text recognition. Agree that to some extent these texts can be considered an encrypted rebus.

The problem is that the Latin alphabet has 26 letters, while the Russian alphabet has 33 letters. For this reason, many people replace the missing Russian letters with far from always understandable combinations of Latin letters.

Some of our Russian compatriots write to me about such problems, who have been abroad for some time or whose children have gone abroad. Usually in such cases, foreign users do not have a computer with a Russian keyboard at hand.

Moreover, the Russian keyboard layout may not be installed on these foreign computers. Accordingly, the user has to be content with the Latin alphabet and write in Russian in English letters, i.e. write in transliteration.

Transliteration program

This problem has a simple solution. For this, programs have been created that have the name "transliteration" (abbreviated as transliteration), which means automatic translation of text written in Latin letters into text in Russian.

These programs work in different ways. In some, you need to type the text in Latin letters, and then on a command, for example, “Transliterate”, the text is “translated” by replacing Latin letters with Russian ones.

In other programs, by typing the text in Latin, you can immediately see the text being created in Russian on the screen. This is exactly what happens in the porusski.net program.

An example of a program that performs transliteration:

Rice. 1 (click on image to enlarge). Write in Russian when there is no Russian keyboard. You can choose different layouts.

1 in fig. 1 – if you click on the “Show/hide layout menu” button, then you can select the layout menu that is convenient for you, namely:

  • English, USA
  • German
  • Swedish
  • French
  • Italian
  • Spanish
  • Hebrew
  • British
  • Norwegian

2 in fig. 1 - shows the current layout that is currently active. You will press the keys on your keyboard, which does not have Russian letters. And in window 3 in Fig. 1 Russian text will appear as you type it. The layout can be changed to a more convenient one using button 1 in Fig. 1.

3 in fig. 1 - cheers, there will be Russian text here, after you gradually type it.

Regardless of the transliteration method, the user of such a program has the opportunity, by typing in Latin letters, to create a text in Russian (Armenian, Hebrew, etc.). This text can be placed through other programs, for example, in forums, chats, e-mail, etc. to communicate with compatriots in their native language.

The transliteration method is simple and convenient. However, it is not always and not suitable for everyone. If the user is abroad for a long time, then it is difficult to constantly write in transliteration.

How to add a language to a computer

Another option, when the transliteration program will not save: the computer was purchased abroad, of course, the keyboard has only Latin letters. And I want to print and communicate with compatriots in their native language. The output could be like this.

To add a new language to the computer's language bar , follow the path (for Windows XP):

<Пуск>– Control Panel – Regional and Language Options – Languages tab, Details button.

In the “Add input language” window that opens, select the language you need and perform the necessary actions that the program requests.

Now the computer will print in the language you set when switching keyboard layouts. Thus, you have agreed on mutual understanding, it remains to deal with the hardware, that is, in this case, with the keyboard. After all, on the keyboard, for example, Russian letters will not be drawn automatically, but the Latin alphabet will remain.

You can write your own alphabet on the keyboard, for example, with a felt-tip pen. Cheap and cheerful. There is a more aesthetic way out: to purchase stickers in a computer store (or online store), where there is both Latin and native alphabet. Then stick them in the correct order on the keyboard - and there is no limit to joy!

If you dream, then ... It would be nice to learn how to write in any language without knowing it and having only a Russian keyboard! But, alas, until programmers and linguists have thought of this!

The situation when, when logging in, there is no input language in which the password or account name is specified is not common. However, judging by the forum, this problem is sometimes encountered by unlucky lovers of Cyrillic passwords, who have lost the opportunity to log into the system. After all, if the account, as a rule, can be selected with the mouse, then the password must definitely be entered from the keyboard.

The figure below shows the user's login window. Username who set the password for his account in Russian. But the only possible input language is English, otherwise the button for switching the keyboard layout would be displayed in the red highlighted area.

This problem can be solved without any special tricks, since even in the absence of the desired layout, you can enter both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets from the keyboard using ASCII character tables.

How to enter characters from ASCII tables

You will find a table with the meanings for Cyrillic and Latin characters below, and I will first explain how to enter them.

Open notepad, for example, to see how it works. Characters are entered like this:

  1. Press and hold a key ALT
  2. Enter a value (for example, 170 for lowercase "k")
  3. Release the key ALT and you will see the result

For example, the word "Ocean" is entered like this:

O=ALT+142 k=ALT+170 e=ALT+165 a=ALT+160 n=ALT+173

How to change keyboard layout? By simultaneously pressing two keys:

  • Alt+Shift(more common and standard)
  • ctrl+shift(less often, you need to configure Windows - but it's more convenient).

The “Control + Shift” keys from the bottom right of the keyboard are more often used by those who are “on you” with a computer: it’s easier to aim your fingers at the bottom extreme buttons than to look for the Alt key somewhere near the space bar. And not all keyboards have Alt conveniently located: especially on small laptop input devices, you often hit the Windows key with your finger, but not the one that will change the language layout.

How to change buttons to switch keyboard layout

The Eng-Ru keyboard layout icon is located in the Windows tray

The Windows 7 keyboard has its own "dashboard" - the Language Bar. The easiest way to call it is by right-clicking on the icon with the language layout, then - "Settings ...". This icon (Rus / Eng) is located in the lower right corner of the monitor, near the clock in the tray.

How to customize the keyboard in Windows

The Text Input Languages and Services dialog box appears - the Keyboard Switching tab we need is to the right of the others.

In the dialog for changing keyboard shortcuts, everything is clear on an intuitive level. Changing the input language is done with the Alt + Shift combination by default; it is more convenient to switch the layout change to Ctrl + Shift. The right side of the menu, where it says about changing the keyboard layout, should not be touched. A pair of familiar buttons "OK" and "Apply" - now the Russian-English layout will change with the leftmost buttons of the keyboard.

How to add Ukrainian (Uzbek, Kazakh) font for computer keyboard

In Windows 7 and newer operating systems, everything is already built-in and at your fingertips. Right click on the layout switcher icon in the menu Options call window Text input languages and services. Usually, the main language pair is already listed there - Russian with English. It is easy to add additional national layouts.

  1. Open the Language bar (right click on the language icon).
  2. Here is the Add button.
  3. We select the desired language and the appropriate layout from the huge list (on the right - a drop-down plus sign).
  4. As usual - "apply". Ready!

When adding a third (and fourth, etc.) language to the operating system, neither the English keyboard layout nor its Russian variation will go anywhere.

By the way - by the icon for changing the keyboard layout, you can find out the version of Windows in a second. If the language is displayed in the form of three letters (Eng or Rus), then we have Win 10. If there are only two letters (En / Ru), we are in Windows 7 or an older version of the OS.

Oh, and is it difficult to assemble the buttons in the correct order after taking it apart? The fingers know the location of the letters, but the eyes refuse to remember. Or another case - you need to put transparent stickers with Russian keys on the English keyboard - but this is difficult to do from memory.

For such cases, we present a photo of the order of letters for the Russian layout and for the English keyboard layout. You don't have to remember anymore - everything is in front of your eyes.
