Typographic layout of Ilya Burman. How to put an emphasis on vowels

  • Typographic layout of Ilya Burman - Under this name, advanced versions of the QWERTY keyboard layout and ytsuken, allowing you to recruit special characters without using symbolic codes.

For example, to type a long dash symbol in Windows, you need to press Alt + 0, 1, 5, 1. With this layout, the same symbol can be entered by pressing Altgr + -.

Note: A number of characters, such as ← and → added by this layout, is missing in the Windows-1251 encoding, so they cannot be entered into a document in this encoding or a program that does not support UNICODE.

According to the survey results (2009) on the site of the program for teaching a blind decadent printing method "Solo on the keyboard", this layout uses 1.6% of respondents.

The sponsor of the English version of the typographic layout is the famous online magazine for designers SMASHING MAGAZINE.

The pause between the elements of one sign is one point, between signs in the word - 3 points, between words - 7 points. Named in honor of the American inventor and artist Samuel Morse.

The typographical layout allows you to enter all sorts of cool characters using AltGr (right alt). For ease of entering both hands, instead of AltGr, you can use CapsLock. In this layout, it is devoid of its usual functions (I hope you can do without them !!!).

The dead keys (Dead Keys) themselves are not introduced by itself, but change the meaning of the symbol next. We press Altgr-G (nothing appears), and then a - the symbol α will appear.

All key combinations, except for diacritic ("goats" above letters and with letters, with which all sorts of ḫ, ç, Å, ӵ, etc.) are introduced equally in Russian and English layouts. Those., Altgr-A is the same as Altgr-f.

In the archive - installation files, instructions and schemes.

About the layout

Why is needed and how it appeared

The standard keyboard layout has a number of shortcomings. There are no correct hyphens and dash, gaps of different widths, currency signs, degrees and ppm, normal quotes ("" "), etc. You can not enter letters with diakritics. In Russian layout, it is impossible to introduce square brackets ([]), ampersand (&) and some other characters. In the English layout, you can not enter the sign of the sequence number (No.).

The layout of the Birmana is popular among designers and verters. Unfortunately, in Windows, it blocks the Ctrl-Alt combination and does not allow you to enter some useful characters. It inspired me to create its own layouts, so far only for Windows (Birman laying also exists for Mac). Write in the comments if you can provide some kind of help in developing similar layouts for Mac and Linux, or at least just interested in its appearance.

Features

Unlike the layout of the Burman, the Ctrl-Alt combination in my layout is not used. Due to this, hotkeys work correctly in all applications. The AltGr equivalent on the left side of the keyboard made Capslock. For the first time in the history of computing equipment, this key has found peaceful use!

Arrows (← → ↓), fits (¹ ² ³) and fractions (½ ⅓ ¼) are not entered as in the layout of the birman. For them, special dead keys are provided (ALTGR-1, SHIFT-ALTGR- \\, SHIFT-ALTGR-5). Arrows can still be entered from the digital keyboard unit.

The differences from the layout of the Burman are highlighted in a green scheme:

The location of most typographic layout characters is easy to remember with the help of mnemonic rules, or by external similarity. For example, the euro sign is entered by the Altgr-E combination (from EURO).

Installation

Run the installer from the administrator. Change something optional. I recommend installing both Russian, and English typographical layouts.

After installation, the layout selection icon will appear in the system area next to the language selection icon: the default layout will be operated, the typographical one will need to choose each time manually. To remove this icon and always use the typographical layout, click on the keyboard icon by right-click, select "Settings ..." in the menu and completely turn off the standard layout:

  1. First, in the upper part, select one of the installed TyPography-DS layouts in the drop-down list as the main one.
  2. Then, in the main part of the window, select and delete the "Delete" button all the standard layouts.
  3. In order for the typographical layout to work for all users from the time of system boot, you need to go to the control panel, find the "Regional Settings" and on the Administration tab to use the "Copy Settings" button.
  4. Remove the typographical layout and return the standard using the same dialog box.

Famous problems

  • On mystical reasons you can not enter the interpark (point in the middle of the string: ·) using SHIFT-CapsLock-X. Use the right alt.
  • Not all fonts contain a complete set of characters. Sometimes, instead of the desired sign, a square will appear, or a question mark. Microsoft Word makes even worse - automatically selects the most ugly font in the universe containing the missing symbol (MS Mincho, Batang, or MS Gothic).

Good fonts containing most special characters are standard from Microsoft (Arial, Calibri, Cambria, Times New Roman, etc.). Dejavu font line (Dejavu Sans, Dejavu Sans Condensed, Dejavu Serif) is less attractive, but it contains even more characters. The most complete fonts containing all the characters of this layout (and thousands of other) - quivira (scary), Code2000 (even worse), Unifont (hello from the terminals of the 70s with a matrix of symbols of 8 × 8 pixels).

Punto Switcher with typographic layout works incorrectly. Checked on version 3.4 under Windows 7 (x64) - with other versions of the Punto and the operating system, the result may be different. Report in the comments about their observations!

I myself use an analogue of Punto - the Comfort Typing Pro application, which does not occur. There are no automatic switching functions: you can only manually change the language of the newly entered, or selected text. But there are several of their chips missing in Punto.

  • In Windows 8, after installation, you may need to restart the computer. In Windows 7, it is usually enough to get out of the system and go again.
  • Non-standard layouts are sometimes normal when connected via RDP. To avoid possible inconvenience, it is recommended on the server to which the connection is connected, create a key in the registry:
    Folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \\ SYSTEM \\ CURRENTCONTROLSET \\ CONTROL \\ KEYBOARD LAYOUT
    Key: IgnorereMoteKeyBoardLayout
    Type: DWord.
Meaning: 1 After that, RDP will stop using the client layout and will always use the default layout on the server.

Special symbol input modes (dead keys)

Diacritic

Click on the image to open it in high resolution.

Burman has training video By diacritics in his layout. In this layout, everything works in the same way.

There are two diacrick input modes.

  1. The first method only works with actual letters. The diacritic key is pressed before entering letters:

    SHIFT-ALTGR- /, E → É,
    SHIFT-ALTGR-W, h → ӵ.

If there is no such letter in Unicode, the diacritic appears a separate symbol:

    SHIFT-ALTGR-Z, Z → ¸Z.

  2. The second method works for any letters, but introduces "unreal" characters using the so-called combining diacritics. In fact, the diacritical "Kozhenka" will be a separate symbol, but this symbol will be output to the left than usual, "climbing" to the previous letter. The essence of what is happening is easy to understand by clicking after entering the backspace: only a diacritic sign will disappear, but not the letter over which he stood.

Check spelling will swear on such words, and search bots will not normally index them. This method is desirable to use only when preparing documents intended for printing! To enter the combining diacritics, it is necessary after Input letters clamp shift-altgr and, not releasing, press the key twice with the desired diacritical sign:

    i, SHIFT-ALTGR - // → I.

In this way, you can, for example, arrange stress in words.

Greek symbols

We are introduced using the altgr-g dead key: Altgr-G, A → α. Of course, one letter do not get a lot. To fully type text in Greek, you just need to install Greek layout. But for the introduction of individual letters, it is convenient ("γ-radiation", "number π").

Most Greek letters are tied to their phonetic, or visual English analogue. The remaining 2-3 letters are arranged as they have:

Roman numerals

SHIFT-ALTGR-G. The numbers can be entered from the digital keyboard unit, but only small (because with SHIFT, the digital block controls the text cursor and does not print symbols).

Strange icons that are not in most fonts are lard by large numbers: - 5000, - 10,000, - 50000 and - 100,000. And how did you live before without them?!

Arrows

There are two input methods: a simple combination of AltGr with keys on a digital keyboard unit and the Deckless key ALTGR-1 followed by a digit (at least from the main unit, at least from digital). Compliance of the number of directions in both cases is the same:

Substitutional symbols

Altgr- \\, symbol:

There are almost all font numbers. From the letters in most fonts you can find only a, n, m.

Support symbols

Shift-altgr- \\, symbol:

Spaces and hyphens

Altgr-space → Indective space. This is the main space required in addition to the standard space.

The rest of the gaps are needed, perhaps, only professional makers. They are introduced using the Shift-Altgr-space dead key:

The width of the spaces is clearly shown by the distance between the screenshots.

  • | | | | : Standard gap.
  • | | | | : Thin Space, on the THSP scheme) - SHIFT-ALTGR-SPACE, SHIFT-ALTGR-space (Press Shift-Altgr and, not allowed, twice space).
  • | | | | : Thin Independent Space (Narrow Non-Break Space, NNBSP) - SHIFT-ALTGR gap, space (After the first space, release SHIFT-ALTGR).
  • | | | | : Hair Space, HSP) - SHIFT-ALTGR-space, 1.
  • | | | | : Punctuation Space (PUNCTUATION SPACE, PSP) - SHIFT-ALTGR-space, 2.
  • | | | | : Tretepitis (3-per-m, 3 / m) - SHIFT-ALTGR-space 3.
  • | | | | : Fourth papation (4-per-m, 4 / m) - SHIFT-ALTGR-space, 4.
  • | | | | : One sixth round papation (6-per-m, 6 / m) - SHIFT-ALTGR-space, 6.
  • | | | | : Zero width space (Zero-Width Space, ZWSP) - SHIFT-ALTGR-SPACE 0. Words separated by such a space look drank, but they can "crawl" in paragraphs, turned off in width, and will also be identified as separate words when searching.
  • | - | - | - | : Inspection Defisc (Non-Breaking Hyphen, NB-) - SHIFT-ALTGR-SPACE, DEFIS. In Word, it is better to use a Ctrl-Shift-Defis combination, it is correctly processed by the application, even if there is no such symbol in the current font.
  • | - | - | - | : Digital Defis (Figure Dash) - SHIFT-ALTGR-space, \u003d. Defisc width exactly in one digit. Used when recording telephone numbers (212-85-06).
  • | | | | : Digital Space (Figure Space) - SHIFT-ALTGR-space, shift- \u003d. Scroll width into one digit.
  • Round and semicircular spp (EM-SPACE and EN-SPACE) correspond to the width of the long and short dash (EM-DASH and EN-DASH). The input method is a bit cunning, but quite intuitive if before it gets used to enter a long and short dash using AltGr-Defis and SHIFT-ALTGR-DEFIS.
    • | | | | : Round Picking - SHIFT-ALTGR-SPACE, ALTGR-DEFIS (Before the second letter, let goift).
    • | | | | : Semicircular sanding - SHIFT-ALTGR-SPIA, SHIFT-ALTGR-DEFIS (Without releasing SHIFT-ALTGR, you first press the space, then a hyphen).

Drobi.

The fractions for which there are separate icons in Unicode, can be administered using SHIFT-ALTGR-5, numerator, denominator: Shift-altgr-5, 1, 8 → ⅛.
Here are all the affordable fractions from the Unicode table:

Click on the image to open it in high resolution.

An arbitrary fraction can be made up of superscript, fractional layer (/) and substring symbols. Fractional laying is introduced by combination SHIFT-ALTGR-5, SHIFT-ALTGR-5 (Without giving the shift-altgr, press 5 twice). It looks in different fonts in different ways:

In fact, of course, not for the first time: for example, in the Colemak layout, the CapsLock key performs the Backspace functions.

In futuristic films and forecasts of the 50s, in the vision of the future there were radio-video phones, but few could imagine that people would joyfully communicate in printed texts - knocking on the keyboard, stinging letters and electronic diaries, to death to argue in the forums and even Communicate with the spouse, sitting in the neighboring rooms.

And only the "Inventor of the Internet" Vinton Surf believed due to printed communication, although he had a reason for this

He turned out to be a prize or simply formatted reality to himself: personal computers from dextopes to smartphones, steel first communication devices, and they managed to bring text communication to the unprecedented level.

Keyboard conversations and correspondence turned out to be really convenient - no need synchronicity and isolation, combined with work or entertainment, writing the idea of \u200b\u200bthoughts in its pace, switching to study the topic, and it is well known that the information is much easier to read more and faster than listening to.

And the actual dexpes - it doesn't matter, there are cumbersome boxes or ultra-aobile leptops with a real keyboard, and remain the main "terminals" in the world of blogs and forums, Faisbooks and classmates, Asek and other jabber, not to mention the world of "electronic documents".

Now, we communicate with a huge number of people, most of which we will never meet personally, and often appreciate each other according to the quality of texts - as they say, "The Medium Is The Message" ©. This is especially important to professionals - journalists, bloggers, and just "content editors".

Yes, despite the fact that we often see illiterate messages ("Do not let schoolchildren on the Internet, he is stupid from them" ©), and maybe it is because of this, in fashion again, the "Albanian" tetree is forgotten. But if everything with spelling-punctuation is about everything - remember the rules, watch your favorite errors, the next level of text culture is typography.

After all, the texts were clearly shared on samizdat manuscripts and Pishmashinok, and a truly printed, book word, which has passed proofreaders, designed by the vestors and typed specialist-trained typographers.

Now everything needs to be done by himself - and if you can help with spelling programs with spelling, standard blogs and sites templates, plus continuous layout in browsers or text processors, then with typography, alas, "everything is difficult."

It happened that only a small subset of printed symbols settled on the standard keyboard, and we have in the texts like Osta Bender with its broken machine without the letter "E", replace long and short dash, hyphens → a pathetic "minus", typographical quotes-legs - In. In. The meaningful Trootchy "..." - a rough scratch of ordinary points, not to mention more rare, but all the same useful signs of currency degrees, copywrites, and the like. - They are all in standard font sets, but alas, access to them is difficult.

Aesthets of the printed word ignoring typography River soul!

But also the usual readers, even if they do not realize the difference, typographically executed text will be easier to read, and cause more attention and confidence.

What to do? One of the options for solving this problem is the Compose-mode when clamping the modifier key, you need to dismiss a special sequence of keys, and if you are lucky and you remember it correctly and entered - you will fall a prize - the very tricky typographic symbol. But. This hellishness is hard, almost how to type text in the Tex, and blindly. And this is difficult to learn - for on the keyboard itself, nothing can remind you of these symbols, and in general, the use of modal modes and multi-seimy sequences - wildly uncomfortable, knocks off the rhythm and thoughts, because for efficiency it should be so - "one blow - one The symbol ", otherwise there will not be quick blind printing. Not to mention the fact that "compose" and similar modes are completely implemented in a completely different way in Linux and Windows world.

What to do, considering that programmable keyboards with interchangeable symbols is not a fact that they will take off even in the distant future, and everywhere the standard are classic QWERTY-keyboard?

Yes, there is still an opportunity to use a semi-automatic printing, using "Auto Transactions" of text processors, all sorts of "online-typographs", but it's not all that, miserable crutches, instead of a natural and proper decision.

And the right decision is typographic layouts. Entering additional typographic symbols for one press with the modifier key, and to be easier to remember, and for the smoothness curve curve, you must put these additional characters on the keys that cause a graphical or semantic association with an additional symbol.

At one time there were several developed options, but now, at least in RuNet, there was only one, probably the most successful, standard - "Typographic layout of Ilya Burman".

With her everything becomes in order not only with the dash ™ and "quotes", but a bunch of ways appear to enrich your text, even if it is a boring form for entering a simple commentary

  • Kosher to issue simple formulas 1¼ $ ≈ € ≈ £ £, I² \u003d -1, 20 ° × ѵ4≈40 ° ± 3 °
  • You can mention and ѣ-shame ™, and indeed, refer to any meme "Already now it is clear that all this will be bored and slow down" ©
  • "I guess the sign ∞"
  • ¿Hablan Más Español

Eh, and what opportunities "punctuation 2.0" give arrows ← ↓ → ...

In any case, in this layout, the most useful typographic symbols selected by the leading dog designers, the well-known standard, which has been checking the time.

Of course, in the Linux world there were good people who implemented one of the very first versions of the layout, in KDE and GNOME.

But it was one of the first versions of the layout, without a heap of useful characters, for example, the arrows ... And the worst - sharp movements of the third gnome splashhed on a turn with water and this child.

For those who are not the first time on this page:

For all others

At the beginning of the article about the variety, the name of the violet is indicated with the prostancing of stress. Select the shock vowel using a computer in several ways. You can insert the percussion vowels not only in articles about varieties, but also in ordinary discussions when there is a desire to promptly read the correct stress:

"Makuni wrote a lot to their customers, asking about how the varieties bloom. Then there was no Internet, and the conversations were expelled expensive.

Selection of bold shock vowels

Highlight the shock letter and press the "F" button ("bold", the second left in the first row). It turns out like this:

SK-Afhod andthat (SK A.phrodite), S.Kuznetsov, semi

This method is recommended when the article is initially creating, so as not to spend time on the insertion of the stress icon over the vowels. Later, someone from advanced authors will replace emphasis over the bold font to normal accents through the sign of accepted by one of the following ways.

Copying ready-made vowels with stress

Go to the Grade Page, click on the "Edit" tab to get into the article editing mode

After that, by one, change all the drums vowels to vowels with stress. The sequence of actions for replacing one letter looks like this. Below, highlight the mouse with a suitable vowel with an emphasis:

latin: Áéíóýý Áéíuóý Russians: Ayoyoeiua Aeioneyuyu

  • click on the keyboard at the same time Ctrl + C (Latin) to copy the selected shock vowel to the clipboard
  • go to the Edit Article Edit Window
  • highlight the pummate with the mouse, which is going to replace
  • if it is already highlighted in bold, click the "F" button (second in the first row) to remove the selection
  • press the Delete key on the keyboard to remove the previous version of the shock vowel
  • press the "Insert Text Only" editor button (the latest message editor buttons in the first row)
  • a window will appear. Click on the keyboard at the same time Ctrl + V (Latin) to insert the shock vowel into it, stored in the clipboard
  • click the "OK" button to complete the insertion process.
  • in the Word there will be a shock vowel.

Repeat these actions for the rest of the drums.

It turns out something like this:

SK-AFRODITE (SK-ÁPHRODITE), A.Kuznetsov, half

Potential difficulties

Insertion through the text insert button

Insert the copied shock vowel only through the "Insert only text" button. Otherwise, insert together with the letter its design in the article, from where you copied it.

Strictly stick only Latina or only Cyrillic

Make sure the Latin shock vowels will be replaced by drumming vowels from the Latin List, and Cyril - from the list of cyrylic vowels. Latin and Russian shock "A" are completely different letters.

  • the name "Basic Ust Arg" with Latin drums will be at the very beginning of the list of domestic varieties, because for the sorting program, this Russian-speaking name begins with the Latin letter "O"
  • search engines when requesting the name "cloud delight" recorded by completely Russian letters will not find a registry article, where this variety begins with the Latin letter "O"
  • when creating catalogs of varieties broken through the first letter, the domestic variety with the first Latin strike letter can be found only in the subdirectory dedicated to the Latin letter "O"
  • spell check program will emphasize Russian words with shock Latin vowels as wrong
  • when someone will copy the information from the Registry article, the erroneous Russian name with the Latin letter will continue to spread through the Phials World

Paste a special symbol button

In the message editor there is a "insert a special symbol" button (left the Orange Smileys in the first row.

But this method is suitable only for Latin drums. I repeat the above ban on the insertion of Latin shock vowels in Russian names.

Accent using the alt key

In this layout, you can easily enter the stress sign. It is enough to put the cursor after the shock vowel and 2-3 times simultaneously press the combination of Alt (graphic, on the right side of the keyboard) + SHIFT + "/".

In addition to entering strokes, the Ilya Birman layout allows you to enter a variety of useful typographic screening signs through a regular keyboard:

  • "Quotes-christmas"
  • long dash -

However, all these signs are available in our message editor when you click the "Insert Symbol Symbol" button, left an orange emoticon button.
