At the very beginning of autumn in Berlin, the company Sony Mobile Communications (Sony Mobile) exhibition traditionally held in the German capital (Sony Mobile) presented finally updated its family of flagship smartphones: Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact and the world's first smartphone with a 4K display - Xperia Z5 Premium.

The main smartphone of the new lineup, the Xperia Z5 apparatus, which today will be discussed, in some sense, everything spread in its place. The fate of his predecessor, who logically had to get the fourth sequence number, was not difficult. The stable annual update of the Xperia Z model line this year unexpectedly interrupted when the world did not see at the MWC exhibition in Barcelona fourth on the Xperia model with the Z4 index. At the same time, the Japanese market Sony could not refuse this pleasure, and the name of Xperia Z4 was called on his own smartphone market. Later, the company still released this model and to the world market, but called its Xperia Z3 +, and it happened not so long ago.

By the end of the year, the position of the Sony's mobile division, apparently, was recovered, the plans stabilized, and the world saw not only the next, already fifth on the account of the flagship model of the Xperia Z series, but also an expanded set of its varieties. An already familiar reduced version of the Z5 Compact version was added and a much more unusual model with a huge screen with an advanced resolution of 4k. Both of these models are still to be explored, but as long as we will get acquainted with the main, "classic" option of the Japanese flagship smartphone - Sony Xperia Z5.

Appearance and ease of use

The appearance of the flagships of Sony has not changed for several years, and no matter how much the creators claim that some fundamental changes have occurred in the fifth on the account of Xperia Z. The new smartphone is still very simple in the form of a rectangle almost generally without rounds (in terms of), there are no smooth circuits and bends - all lines are straight, all surfaces are flat. If you compare with the previous Xperia Z3 + model, which the Z4 index has received for the market itself, then the housing has become temperatures on half a millimeter and 7 grams are harder, that is, in general, the dimensions and mass remained, by and large, the same.

The back wall is also traditionally flat, without bends, so lifting the smartphone from the table is extremely uncomfortable. It is also uncomfortable that the angles in all models of the flagship series Xperia Z do not have roundings, from this, a smartphone and a place in his pocket takes a lot, and sometimes it is sometimes unpleasant to cut into the body, while in the pockets of clothes. It is clear that the designers tried to keep some kind of special style, but still, resorting to the use of rounded corners and streamlined forms, the developers of modern smartphones think not only about beauty, but also about the practical side of the question, which in this case goes second plan. However, all this does not prevent true fans of the brand Sony to truly love and admire the design of smartphones of this company, and the protruding corners are not confused at all.

As for ergonomics, some noticeable changes really happened here. Mostly it concerns the back wall: it is still done from the glass, and everything is as absolutely flat. However, the glass surface now has become matte, it is painted in the overall color of the case. Due to this, the posterior wall is now completely not brand, it is almost not visible fingerprints. The side metal frame also became matte, there is no rubberized effect, all the surfaces are solid. The body of the apparatus remains, nevertheless, extremely slippery, in dry hands it is kept bad.

Regarding the side frame, you can note another moment. The developers did so that the frame is quite a little bit, barely noticeably discovers over the glasses in front and behind, forming some kind of microscopic protective border. This is enough so that the flat front and rear panels lose the former "airbag" effect when smartphones literally "crawled" themselves according to solid smooth surfaces. Now the device lies reliably and does not slide, but the solid metal edges of the frame have become palpably significantly and unpleasantly crashed into the palm.

The case materials have not changed: in front and rear - glass panels, on the sides - a metal wide frame with angular pins from polycarbonate painted under the overall color of the frame and the entire body. Such corners of a different material are inserted into a solid metal frame in order to extinguish the impact energy when the apparatus is dropped. It can be noted that the side rim profile has become much more flat, even compared to the previous model Z3 + side faces almost lost their roundabouts. So because of this, it became very difficult to raise a smartphone from the table: and the face, and the back wall here are flat, not for what.

The Sony Xperia Z5 case does not have removable parts, the cards are installed in the side slot, entering it on the plastic pallet. This pallet is equipped with two compartments for one nano-SIM format card and one microSD memory card, which cannot be installed the second SIM card. You can install the second SIM card (and not a memory card) in another version of the smartphone, which is called Xperia Z5 Dual.

The card slot itself is covered outside the lid with a rubberized gasket that protects the inside from the penetration of water and dust. However, there is some kind of inconsistency in this, since it also written literally the following: "The device is forbidden to completely immerse the water." At the same time, the correspondence of the degree of protection IP68 suggests that the product is suitable for immersion in water to a depth of 1.5 m for half an hour. Sony allows its smartphones only "Finding heavy rain and washing under the crane."

As for individual elements of the case, their number and location of the location changed, and the latter - for the worse. The volume keys was lowered so low that it turns out to be not under his fingers at any hand, and somewhere in the middle of the inside of the palm. Accordingly, in order to get to it, you need to sort out the smartphone in your fingers, and it is not necessary to forget that he has a sufficiently slippery case.

The second news is more positive: Finally, after Apple, Samsung and others, the fingerprint scanner appeared in Sony smartphones, which is responsible for unlocking the device. It also supports FIDO standard - authorization by fingerprint to make online payments. True, the scanner platform is limited to the width of the power button embedded into the side face, so that work with a scanner so unusual shape will have to at first get used to it. It costs a little not so attach a finger, and the imprint will not be recognized. If you adapt and bring your finger every time in the same way, there will be no special problems with identification, but still errors sometimes happen.

On this innovation end. All other elements are familiar, the location of them is familiar. On the front panel at the top of the sensors, the front camera and the Event LED indicator are placed. The indicator operation is regulated by the user in the section on sound in the settings.

There is no dynamics output at the bottom of the touch hardware buttons. Thus, two speakers are embedded on the front panel, top and bottom. The exact same arrangement of stereo speakers was observed in the previous flagship model of the manufacturer.

On the back of the chamber and flash windows, the double LED in Sony did not dare to install even this time. No other additional functions like the presence of laser rangefinders, heart rate sensors or infrared Sony's infrared transmitters have not yet induced.

Interface connectors are located on the upper and lower ends of the device, they are not covered with water protection plugs. Nevertheless, repeat, the device has protection against water and dust - in Sony it is called Capless. The Micro USB connector supports the connection of external devices in the USB OTG mode, but the organization of this connection is unusual. Simply, the smartphone does not recognize any connected OTG devices, for this you need to guess to go to the section "Connecting devices" in the menu and find the function of detecting USB devices. After physical connection, for example, flash drives via OTG adapter should start the search, and only then the smartphone will see the device connected to it. Running detection function can be displayed with a separate button to the shortcut curtain, but in general, such a complication of the process is quite unusual, not everyone can pass this quest.

As for the color diversity of the design of the novelty enclosures, here the developers, as always, showed fantasy: besides classic black and white, and gold and turquoise-green options are also available. No physical differences, depending on the color of the housing, Sony Xperia Z5 smartphones do not have.

Screen

The Sony Xperia Z5 smartphone is equipped with a Sony Triluminos touch IPS matrix for mobile devices with Live Color LED and X-REALITY branded technologies. Screen dimensions are 64 × 114 mm, diagonal - 5.2 inches, resolution - 1920 × 1080 points. Accordingly, the density of the points is 424 ppi.

The frame width around the screen is quite standard: it is about 3.5 mm on the sides, on top and bottom - approximately 15 mm.

The device has an external light sensor, based on which the automatic configuration of the screen brightness is functioning, it is also possible to manually adjust. Multitouch technology here allows processing 10 simultaneous touches. There is an approximation sensor that blocks the screen when making a smartphone to the ear. The smartphone screen can be controlled in gloves. In the previous Xperia Z3 + model, it was possible to activate the display by tapping on the glass, it again disappeared.

Detailed examination with the use of measuring instruments was conducted by the editor of the "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" sections Alexey Kudryavtsev. We present his expert opinion on the screen of the sample under study.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface resistant to the appearance of scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-reflective screen properties of the screen is slightly better than the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, we give a photo on which the white surface is reflected in the screens of both devices (Sony Xperia Z5, as it is easy to determine, on the right, then they can be distinguished by size):

Both screens are dark, but the Sony screen is still slightly darker (its photo brightness is equal to 109 against 111 at Nexus 7). The tripling of the reflected objects in the Sony Xperia Z5 screen is very weak, this suggests that between the outer glass (it is the touch sensor) and the surface of the matrix there is no air gap (OGS-One Glass Solution type screen). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (type of glass / air) with highly different refractive facilities, such screens look better with a strong external illumination, but their repair in the event of a cracked exterior glass costs much more expensive, as it is necessary to change the entire screen. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (fat-repellent) coating (very effective, slightly better than Nexus 7), so traces from fingers are removed significantly easier, and appear at a lower rate than in the case of conventional glass.

When manually controlled brightness and when the white field is output, its maximum value was about 660 kD / m², and the minimum is 4.9 kD / m². The maximum value is very high, and considering excellent anti-reflective properties, with bright daylight and even on the right sun, the image on the screen should be well distinguishable. In complete darkness, brightness can be reduced to a comfortable level. It works automatic brightness adjustment over the illumination sensor (it is located to the right of the logo on the front panel). In automatic mode, when changing external light conditions, the screen brightness is rising, and decreases. The operation of this function depends on the position of brightness adjustment. If it is at the maximum, then in complete darkness, the auturance function reduces the brightness of up to 26 cd / m² (normally), in conditions of an artificial light of the office (approximately 400 lux) sets 320 cd / m² (slightly high), in a very bright environment (corresponds With a clear day outdoor lighting, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 LCs or a little more) increases to 560 cd / m² (this is enough, you want brighter - increase manually, but also take responsibility for the quick discharge of the battery). If the brightness slider on the half of the scale (it is very non-linear - after 50%, the brightness dramatically goes up with an increase in the setting value), then the screen brightness for the three conditions specified above is as follows: 17, 150 and 460 kD / m² (suitable values). If the brightness regulator is set to at least 9.7, 16, 350 kD / m² (only the average value is highly understated). As a result, the lifting function of the brightness works absolutely adequately, and it is possible to adjust the nature of the brightness of the user. Only at a very low level of brightness, a significant illumination modulation appears, but its frequency is high, about 2.3 kHz, therefore there is no visible screen flicker (but may be detected in the test for the presence of a stroboscopic effect).

The screen has good viewing angles without inverting the shades and without a significant shift of colors, even at large viewing deviations from perpendicular to the screen. For comparison, we give a photo on which the same images are displayed on the Nexus 7 and Sony Xperia Z5 screens, while the brightness of the screens is initially installed by about 200 kD / m² (on a white field in full screen), and the color balance on the camera is forcibly switched to 6500 to the camera. . The colors on the Sony Xperia Z5 screen are oversaturated, bodily shades are strongly shifted into the red area, and the color balance is noticeably different from the standard one. Of course, to evaluate the color reproduction of the screen in a photo - it's like measuring Bach by how his neighbor was inserted, but the trend was transferred correctly. Now at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much from both screens, but the Sony Xperia Z5 contrast decreased to a greater extent due to the strong decrease of black. And white field:

The brightness at an angle from both screens has decreased significantly (at least 5 times, based on the difference in exposure), but in the case of Sony Xperia Z5, the brightness drop is smaller (the brightness of photographs 243 versus 234 at Nexus 7). The black field when the diagonal deviations is deviated very much and acquires a purple shade or remains approximately neutral gray. Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is normal - about 740: 1. Response time when switching black-white-black is 18 ms (10 ms incl. + 8 ms off.). The transition between halftons of gray 25% and 75% (on the numerical value of color) and back in sum occupies 29 ms. Constructed by 32 points with an equal interval for the numerical value of the shade of a gray gamma curve did not reveal in neither in light, nor in the shadows, and the indicator of the approximating power function turned out to be 2.25, which is slightly higher than the standard value of 2.2, however, it does not have None, since the real gamma curve is noticeably deviated from the power dependence:

It is determined by this presence of an aggressive dynamic adjustment of the brightness of the backlight in accordance with the nature of the displayed image (on dark brightness decreases). As a result, the obtained dependence of brightness from the shade (gamma curve) does not correspond to the gamma curve of the static image, since the measurements were carried out with a consistent output of shades of gray almost full screen. For this reason, a number of tests are the definition of contrast and response time, comparing the illumination of black at angles - we were performed when withdrawing special templates with constant medium brightness, and not one-photo fields in full screen. In general, such an unlocked brightness correction is nothing but harm, since the reduction in brightness on dark images reduces the distinguishability of gradations in the shadows under conditions of external illumination, and the constant brightness jumps are very annoyed. That is, the benefits of this function zero, only harm.

Color coverage is wider than SRGB:

They are very atypical for Sony's top mobile devices. Apparently, the LEDs with a blue emitter and green and red phosphor are used in this screen (usually a blue emitter and yellow phosphor), which, in combination with special matrix light filters and allows you to get a wide color coverage. In the Red Luminofore, apparently, the so-called quantum dots are used. Unfortunately, as a result, colors of images - drawings, photos and films, - SRGB-oriented space (and such an overwhelming majority), have unnatural saturation. This is especially noticeable on recognizable shades, for example on skin shades. The result is shown in the photo above. It is worth noting that there is some progress, since in this case the coverage is still slightly reduced by cross-mixing the component. At such a pace, maybe in Sony Xperia Z10, we will finally see the SRGB coverage and a natural picture.

The balance of shades on the gray scale leaves much to be desired, as the color temperature is strongly higher than the standard 6500 K, and even deviation from the spectrum of an absolutely black body (ΔE), not very large on white, rapidly growing as the brightness decreases the shade. But at least the variation of the color temperature is small. (Dark areas of the gray scale can not be considered, since there the balance of colors does not matter, and the measurement error of the color characteristics on the low brightness is large.)

In this smartphone, there is an opportunity to adjust the color balance by adjustments by the intensities of the three main colors.

What we tried to do; Result - data signed as Corr. on schedules above. As a result, we corrected the color temperature and slightly reduced ΔE. This is a good result, however, the brightness (as well as contrast) has decreased strongly - from 660 to 470 cd / m². However, the oversaturation of colors such a correction has not reduced. If someone's image on the screen of this smartphone still seems not enough "bright" and "juicy", then the corporate mode can be enabled X-REALITY FOR MOBILE. The result is below:

Saturation and contour sharpness programmatically increases, and distinguishable gradations of shades in the field of saturated colors becomes less. But the picture, yes, became brighter. There are extremal Limit brightness modewhere the trend of "improvements" image reaches its peak. That's what we got:

Let's summarize. The brightness adjustment range of this screen is very wide, anti-glare properties are excellent, which makes it possible to use the smartphone as a sunny day on the beach and in complete darkness. It is permissible to use an automatic brightness adjustment mode that works absolutely adequately. The advantages also include a very efficient oleophobic coating, no air gap in the layers of the screen and flicker. The disadvantages are the strong decrease of black color when the view from the perpendicular to the surface of the screen and the aggressive dynamic brightness adjustment. With color reproduction, everything is very bad, the colors are oversaturated (the shades of the skin are especially affected), the color balance is bad. The presence of the corresponding adjustments allow the balance slightly to correct, but due to a very strong decrease in brightness (and contrast). However, taking into account the importance of the characteristics for this class of devices (and the most important thing is the distinguishability of information in a wide range of external conditions), the screen quality can be considered high. Cinema and photos are better not to look at this and not show anyone, but the text or, for example, the card will be visible well.

Sound

Sony Xperia Z5 is, perhaps, the first representative of this lineup, the sound of which, with full right, can be described as an impressive. Finally, the smartphone with the protection of water from the Japanese began to play loudly, Basovito and purely, to this flagship Sony with their external sound, to put it mildly, did not affect. Here the pair of stereo speakers makes a powerful, bright, thick and rich sound, remaining clean at any volume level, the stock of which should be noted, quite satisfactory.

In soundtakes, as usual, there is a maximum of a variety of sound quality improvements, but firstly, most of them are available only when the headphones are connected, and secondly, including disabling them, we still did not notice much difference. However, the very presence of the capabilities of the surround sound of the S-Force Front Surround, as well as a variety of additional functions such as the technology of improving the sound quality DSEE HX (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) must be filled with the owner of the advanced flagship smartphone Sony pride. You can go to these parameters through the standard settings section, and you can find them in the branded audio player, which is first called not Walkman, but simply "music".

In the conversational dynamics, the voice of a familiar interlocutor, the timbre and intonation remain recognizable, with the surrounding noises, the noise cancellation system at the same time copes in general adequately. The smartphone has a FM radio that works only with headphones connected as an antenna.

Camera

Sony Xperia Z5 is equipped with two digital camera modules with a resolution of 23 and 5 megapixels. The frontal 5-megapixel module EXMOR R is equipped with a 25-millimeter wide-angle lens G Lens with a diaphragm F / 2.4 and a fixed focus, its own flash has no. The front camera, as well as the main, can work in manual and automatic shooting control modes. The physical module here is exactly the same as in the previous model, the control menu is also not much different. There is an HDR mode, the video is a feature of e-stabilization of Steadyshot with Intelligent Active Mode, the camera can recognize the smile, the ability to add "soft skin" appears. With the shooting of Selfie, the camera copes well, the pictures are obtained rather sharp, light and detailed.

The main chamber is equipped with a new previously used 23-megapixel Sony Exmor RS module for mobile devices with a Matrix 1 / 2.3 "and a wide-angle lens G Lens (24 mm) with a diaphragm F / 2.0, a hybrid autofocus and a single-circuit pulse LED flash. Autofocus occurs quite quickly, on this occasion the developers separately note the presence of hybrid autofocus in Sony Xperia Z5, which combines the capabilities of contrast and phase focus technologies: the first is responsible for accuracy, and the second is for speed. And due to the fact that the focus points are located throughout the viewfinder, to bring focus on the object anywhere in the frame, you need much less seconds (0.03 s).

You can also note the presence of a Bionz image processing processor, in addition, technology was improved for shooting in conditions of weak lighting, which ensures better photos without distortion and blur at night or in the dark. All Xperia Z5 series smartphones have received an updated version of Steadyshot stabilization technology with an Intelligent Active Mode mode, providing smooth stabilization without distortion. Well, of course, you should not forget that Sony is almost the only manufacturer who still sets a separate hardware camera control button into its smartphones. Part of the shooting settings can be transmitted to control third-party applications via Camera2 API (RAW entry is not supported).

In the settings, you can traditionally choose between automatic and manual control modes, only this time the maximum resolution automatically is not limited to 8 megapixel, and is the same 23 meters as in manual mode. In manual mode, you can set an ISO, white balance, change the focus type. There is a five-time digital zoom, carried out using the Clear Image scaling technology.

In addition, the settings traditionally contains a mass of additional modes, including entertainment, such as, for example, augmented reality mode called AR EFFECT, which makes it possible to combine real pictures with animation. Recently, the choice of options for AR has been significantly expanded.

The camera is able to shoot a video in the maximum resolution of 4k, and this mode is traditionally not found among the general settings, it is removed by a separate icon in the additional mode menu. There is also a shooting mode with a speed of 60 frames per second, and you can already switch to the usual camera control menu. The frame around the screen looks standard: its width is only about 3 mm on the sides and 16 mm from above and below. With such large common enabarits of the case, such a frame is definitely impossible to be called wide.

The display brightness has automatic adjustment based on the lighting sensor. There is also an approximation sensor that blocks the screen when making a smartphone to the ear. Multitouch technology allows you to handle 10 simultaneous touches. The modes of operation in gloves and wet fingers are supported.

Detailed examination with the use of measuring instruments was conducted by the editor of the "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" sections of Alexey Kudryavtsev. We present his expert opinion on the screen of the sample under study.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface resistant to the appearance of scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-reflective screen properties of the screen is slightly better than the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, we give a photo on which a white surface is reflected in the screens of both devices (Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, as it is easy to determine, on the right, then they can be distinguished by size):

Both screens are dark, but the Sony screen is still slightly darker (its photo brightness is 105 against 108 at Nexus 7). The tripling of the reflected objects in the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium screen is very weak, this suggests that between the outer glass (it is the touch sensor) and the matrix surface there is no air gap (OGS-One Glass Solution type screen). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (type of glass / air) with highly different refractive facilities, such screens look better with a strong external illumination, but their repair in the event of a cracked exterior glass costs much more expensive, as it is necessary to change the entire screen. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (fat-repellent) coating (very effective, even better than Nexus 7), so traces from fingers are removed significantly easier, and appear at a lower rate than in the case of conventional glass.

When manually controlling the brightness and when the white field is output, its maximum value was about 605 kD / m², and the minimum is 4.6 kD / m². The maximum value is very high, and considering excellent anti-reflective properties, with bright daylight and even on the right sun, the image on the screen should be well distinguishable. In complete darkness, brightness can be reduced to a comfortable level. It works automatic brightness adjustment over the illumination sensor (it is located to the right of the logo on the front panel). In automatic mode, when changing external light conditions, the screen brightness is rising, and decreases. The operation of this function depends on the position of brightness adjustment. If it is at the maximum, then in complete darkness, the function of the auturance reduces the brightness of up to 22 cd / m² (normally), in conditions of an artificial light of an office (about 400 LCs), it sets 400 cd / m² (high), in a very bright environment (corresponds to lighting A clear day outside of the room, but without direct sunlight - 20000 LCs or a little more) increases to 610 cd / m² (even slightly higher than with manual adjustment). If the brightness slider on the half of the scale (it is very non-linear - after 50%, the brightness dramatically goes up with an increase in the setting value), then the screen brightness for the three conditions mentioned above is as follows: 13, 210 and 520 kD / m² (suitable values). If the brightness controller is set at a minimum - 7, 18, 440 cd / m² (the average value is highly understated). As a result, the lifting function of the brightness works absolutely adequately, and it is possible to adjust the nature of the brightness of the user. Only at a very low level of brightness, a significant lighting modulation appears, but its frequency is high, about 2.3 kHz, therefore, even in this case, there is no visible screening of the screen (but may be detected in the test for the presence of a stroboscopic effect).

This screen uses an IPS type matrix. Micrographs demonstrate a typical structure of subpixels for IPS:

However, the subpixels themselves are located unconventional - in the horizontal direction they are typical columns, but in each of the columns of the subpixel triads shifted to one subpixel vertically first upwards, and through three columns down. Note that such a location of the subpixels was already met in the case of Lenovo K3 Note. As a result, the ratio of the columns horizontally to the vertical triads is 3 K 2, the actual resolution vertically by 1/3 is less than horizontally. Here and then refers to the landscape orientation of the screen. That is, points (RGB triads) on the screen is actually only 3840 per 1440. At the same time, the manufacturer about Sony Xperia Z5 Premium writes: "Display 4K UHD (3840 × 2160)".

Additional tests have shown that in principle, not every application is generally capable of displaying the image in this conditional 4K-resolution. For example, MX Player, FIV, Google Photos are output exclusively in full HD resolution, that is, 1920 per 1080 pixels (until the screen is already scaling to the screen), and only the image demonstrator itself displays a picture in the 4K permit (perhaps a regular video player Sony also knows how to do it). Here is such a limited "4K", not for all. Well, we found the program, consider the features of the output on the example of vertical and horizontal worlds with black strips thick in one pixel through a white gap, too, in one pixel. With vertical (on the right side) stripes, everything is good - clearly, pixel through a pixel. With horizontal (on the left side), it is worse, as dark intervals have a thickness of everything in one subpixel and visually the world seems simple as a gray field. On the vertical, if desired (and with the help of a magnifying glass), the strips can be considered. In addition, at the beginning of the horizontal worlds instead of the strip, some mash is displayed - the error of recalculation into the resolution of the strange matrix. However, formally black and white resolution in 3840 × 2160 points is still implemented. Horizontal black stripe is? There is! Sony for deception will no longer succeed, and no one promised to implement and color resolution at 3840 × 2160 points in explicit form. However, these are all quirks, the screen resolution is still exhausted.

The screen has good viewing angles without inverting the shades and without a significant shift of colors, even at large viewing deviations from perpendicular to the screen. For comparison, we give the photo on which the same images are displayed on the Nexus 7 and Sony Xperia Z5 screens, the same images are displayed, while the brightness of the screens is initially set to about 200 kD / m² (on the white field in full screen), and the color balance on the camera is forcibly switched to 6500 K. The colors on the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium screen are oversaturated, bodily shades are strongly shifted into the red area, and the color balance is noticeably different from the standard one. Now at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much from both screens, the contrast was preserved at a good level. And white field:

The brightness at an angle of both screens has decreased significantly (at least 5 times, based on the difference in exposure), but in the case of Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, the brightness drop is slightly larger (the brightness of photographs 232 versus 235 in Nexus 7). The black field during the deviation on the diagonal is not very strong and acquires a purple shade. The photos below are demonstrated (the brightness of white areas in the perpendicular plane of the screens direction at the screens of the same!):

Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) high - about 1060: 1. Response time when switching a black-white-black-black equal to 26 ms (16 ms incl. + 10 ms off.). The transition between the halftons of gray 25% and 75% (for the numerical value of color) and back in sum occupies 35 ms. Constructed by 32 points with an equal interval of the numerical value of the shade of a gray gamma curve did not reveal in neither in light, nor in the shadows, and the indicator of the approximating power function turned out 2.40, which is higher than the standard value of 2.2, however, it has no Values, since the real gamma curve is noticeably deviated from the power dependence:

It is determined by this presence of an aggressive dynamic adjustment of the brightness of the backlight in accordance with the nature of the displayed image (on dark brightness decreases). As a result, the obtained dependence of brightness from the shade (gamma curve) does not correspond to the gamma curve of the static image, since the measurements were carried out with a consistent output of shades of gray almost full screen. For this reason, a number of tests are the definition of contrast and response time, comparing the illumination of black at angles - we were performed when withdrawing special templates with constant medium brightness, and not one-photo fields in full screen. In general, such an unlocked brightness correction is nothing but harm, since the reduction in brightness on dark images reduces the distinguishability of gradations in the shadows under conditions of external illumination, and the constant brightness jumps are very annoyed. That is, the benefits of this function zero, only harm.

Color coverage is wider than SRGB:

They are very atypical for Sony's top mobile devices. Apparently, the LEDs with a blue emitter and green and red phosphor are used in this screen (usually a blue emitter and yellow phosphor), which, in combination with special matrix light filters and allows you to get a wide color coverage. In the Red Luminofore, apparently, the so-called quantum dots are used. Unfortunately, as a result, colors of images - drawings, photos and films, - SRGB-oriented space (and such an overwhelming majority), have unnatural saturation. This is especially noticeable on recognizable shades, for example on skin shades. The result is shown in the photo above.

The balance of shades on the gray scale is mediocre, since the color temperature is strongly higher than the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the spectrum of absolutely black body (ΔE) is not very large, but noticeably jumps from the shade to the shade. But at least the variation of the color temperature is small. (Dark areas of the gray scale can not be considered, since there the balance of colors does not matter, and the measurement error of the color characteristics on the low brightness is large.)

In this smartphone, there is an opportunity to adjust the color balance by adjustments by the intensities of the three main colors.

What we tried to do, the result is the data signed as Heat on schedules above. As a result, we adjusted the color temperature and at least on the white field reduced ΔE. This is a good result, but the variation ΔE has increased, and the brightness (as well as contrast) has decreased strongly - from 600 to 380 kD / m². Yes, and the oversaturation of colors such a correction has not reduced. If someone's image on the screen of this smartphone still seems not enough enough "bright" and "colorful", then you can enable corporate mode X-REALITY FOR MOBILE.

Saturation and contour sharpness increase the programmatically, and the distinguishable gradations of shades in the field of saturated colors are becoming less. But the picture - yes, it became brighter. There are extremal Limit brightness modewhere the trend of "improvements" image reaches its peak. That's what we got:

Let's summarize. The brightness adjustment range of this screen is very wide, anti-glare properties are excellent, which makes it possible to use the smartphone as a sunny day on the beach and in complete darkness. It is permissible to use an automatic brightness adjustment mode that works absolutely adequately. The advantages also include a very effective oleophobic coating, the absence of air gams in the layers of the screen and the flicker, the moderate lighting of black in color when the view from the perpendicular to the surface of the screen, the excellent uniformity of the black field. The disadvantages are aggressive dynamic brightness adjustment. With color reproduction, everything is very bad, the colors are oversaturated (the shades of the skin are especially affected), the color balance is bad. The presence of appropriate adjustments allows you to slightly straighten the balance, but due to a very strong reduction in brightness (and contrast). However, taking into account the importance of the characteristics for this class of devices (and the most important thing is the distinguishability of information in a wide range of external conditions), the screen quality can be considered high. Cinema and photos are better not to look at this and not show anyone, but the text or, for example, the card will be visible well.

Sound

The sound of the novelty seemed less impressive to us than that of the same Xperia Z5, although perhaps this lack of a specific test pattern is still not a serial smartphone from the store. In any case, the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium sound can not be called impressive. Two stereo speakers are located at the top and bottom of the front panel, the sound output is implemented in two barely noticeable slits, due to which it is possible to implement the surround sound, called here S-Force Front Surround. The sound is not bad, clean, but still deaf and insufficiently powerful and loud - water strokes are affected.

In the headphones, the sound is better, but it clearly does not reach the quality of the same OPPO. The sound is bright, loud, but the complete latitude of the frequency spectrum still does not have, and crystal purity too. Impurities of foreign noise are heard, the maximum volume level is not excessive, it barely pulls out for a comfortable listening, lower the slider of desire does not appear below.

To play musical compositions, the apparatus uses its own brand player, which suddenly ceased to be called Walkman. Otherwise, everything is familiar here: the user has traditionally been given a choice between manual adjustment and automatic optimization of all sound parameters using the Clearaudio + complex function. As already noted, the Premium version is not much different from the usual Z5. This also applies to the camera. Despite the flaws listed above, the camera is the same as in Z5, but do not forget that its best qualities are manifested when shooting at 8 megapixels. In this case, it is possible to avoid unaware angles and increase the overall sharpness of the snapshot. However, the central part and on 20 megapixel pictures looks good, and sometimes the camera is not bad to handle the entire field.

Some roughness inherent in the first firmware of new Sony smartphones, here you can still find here, but they are practically disappearing when moving to shooting in 8 megapixels. The laboratory test does not allow to prove the identity of the Z5 and Z5 Premium cameras, but the firmware of the latter clearly does not look final, which is why some artifacts appear in the pictures, which make such a difference. As a result, you can conclude that the camera can cope well with many scenarios.

Telephone part and communication

The smartphone can function in most of the 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA networks, and also has the support of the fourth-generation networks LTE Cat.6 FDD, that is, this unit provides theoretical speed up to 300 Mbps to download. At the same time, the smartphone has the support of all the three most common LTE (B3, B7 and B20) ranges in domestic operators. The text entry is supported by the method of failure to slip from the letter to the letter (SWYPE), and can also be reduced in size and closer to one of the edges of the display virtual keyboards for ease of control of the fingers of one hand. The view and organization of the keyboard itself traditionally for Sony smartphones can be selected from several possible options. The so-called "small application" mode allows you to withdraw some full-time programs, such as a calculator, timer, calendar, and even a browser, in the form of separate small windows with a variable size. Such windows can be opened several pieces, that is, in fact, this is such a multi-density mode, but not for any applications.

The smartphone supports working with two SIM cards, but only the data transfer function can be boring to a specific card, and for voice calls and text messages you need to select a SIM card in the corresponding interface when sending. In general, it does not at all cause irritation, but someone may not have enough such obvious functionality as the initial binding of certain functions to specific cards.

OS and Software

In terms of the program platform, there are no differences from the usual version of Z5. Here, the same fifth version of Google Android is used as the operating system (Lollipop 5.1.1) with its own shell. The shell is familiar with the previous generations of SONY smartphones, noticeable differences from the model to the model does not appear, although something changes something else. For example, here, as in the usual Xperia Z5, suddenly disappeared the familiar navigating navigation panel in the application menu. Sony Xperia Z5 Premium Hardware Platform is based on a familiar 8-nuclear SOC Qualcomm Snapdragon 810. This 64-bit SOC is made according to the process of 20 nm, it includes four productive 64-bit Arm Cortex-A57 cores with a frequency of up to 2 GHz, which Compleced by four simpler 64-bit Cortex-A53 cores with a frequency of up to 1.5 GHz, providing high energy efficiency or performance depending on specific tasks.

Nevertheless, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 top-level platform is quite capable of competing with other modern flagship alternative solutions, such as Hisilicon Kirin 935 and MediaTek MT6795. In graphic tests, the GPU Snapdragon 810 demonstrates the results no less high than those of the SOC listed. At the same time, Snapdragon 810 is quite a bit inferior in everything leading exynos 7420 (represented in the MEIZU Pro 5 smartphone tables).

In any case, the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium smartphone is at its performance at the level of modern flagships, and its hardware features still during the change of the generation pair will definitely be enough to perform any tasks, including for demanding games.

Note that for mobile devices it is important to have the support of hardware decoding of videos at the chip level, since to process modern options due to the processor nuclei are most often impossible. Also, it is not necessary to wait from the mobile device of decoding everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to PC, and no one is going to challenge it. According to test results, the subject did not turn out to be equipped with all the necessary decoders, which are required to fully play most of the most common multimedia files. Apparently, only Sony still supports the transmission of the image using a wired connection (supported MHL 3.0 support), since the number of devices that can display a picture on MHL or Mobility DisplayPort is rapidly decreasing. For testing MHL we used a monitor ViewSonic VX2363SMHLSupporting a direct MHL connection (in version 2.0) using a passive adapter cable from the Micro-USB connector on HDMI. At the same time, the conclusion on MHL was carried out in a resolution of 1920 to 1080 pixels with a frequency of 60 frame / s. Regardless of the actual orientation of the smartphone, the image output to the screens of the smartphone and the monitor is carried out in the landscape orientation by the connector on the smartphone to the right. In this case, the image on the monitor is exactly written in the limit of the display area and one to one repeats the image on the screen of the smartphone. The exclusion is the start screen and, apparently, the program windows, in principle that do not support landscape orientation. The sound of MHL is displayed (in this case, we used headphones connected to the monitor) and has good quality. In this case, the sounds through the loudspeaker of the smartphone himself are not displayed, and the volume with the buttons on the smartphone housing is not adjustable, but turns on / off. In our case, a smartphone with a connected MHL adapter, judging by the charge indicator, was charged.

Next, using a dialing of test files with one division per frame with an arrow and a rectangle (see "Methods for testing reproduction devices and displaying a video signal.
