Where are the headphones inserted into the computer. How to set up a microphone with headphones on a computer and laptop

Recently, a computer has been more and more used to communicate not only through text, but also using sound and video, but still not all users know how to set up headphones on a windows 7 computer. The choice of windows 7 as the operating system is not accidental , because at the moment it is the most common operating system.

First, let's see how to connect and set up headphones to your computer.

In modern computers, the headphone jack is located on the front wall of the system unit. It is marked in green. If there is no such connector, look for it on the back of the computer - it is definitely there.

Let's move on to the headphones themselves, more precisely, to their plug, which is a metal rod with a diameter of 3.5 mm and is called a "jack". Pay attention to the "jack" - it should have two or three black rings. To connect headphones to a computer, you need a "jack" with two rings (three pins). If the "jack" has three rings, then this is a headset (headphones and microphone), which is connected to a universal connector, usually used on laptops. This connector is marked with an icon in the form of headphones with a microphone.

Setting up headphones on a computer

Most often, headphones with a microphone are used to communicate via Skype or in online games. Let's see how to set up headphones with a microphone on a computer.

First, connect the headphones and the computer (headphones in the green connector, microphone in the red). Next, by right-clicking on the speaker in the lower right corner of the screen, open the menu and select "Playback devices".

Here we will answer the question of how to adjust the sound on a computer through headphones. In the "Sound" window, select the "Speakers" item and click the "Settings" button. In the next window, select "Stereo" and check how the headphones sound by clicking on the picture of the left or right speakers. If everything is in order, click "Next". On the next tab, do not change anything, click "Next" and "Finish". In the same "Sound" window, we check the setting, for which we right-click on the "Speakers" icon and select "Check". We listen to the sound. Everything, setting up the headphones on the computer is completed.

Let's look at how to adjust the headphone volume on a computer. To do this, click on the speaker icon at the bottom right of the screen and move the slider that appears up, increasing the volume, or down, reducing it. This is the most convenient way to adjust the sound in headphones on a computer.

Let's see how to set up a microphone in headphones on a computer. Right-click on the speaker icon and select "Recording devices". A window with a microphone will open. Right-click on it and select "Properties". Change the settings on the "Levels" tab: use the slider to add volume to the microphone and set the gain level. Click "Apply". On the "Improvement" tab, check the boxes "Noise suppression", "Echo suppression". Click OK. Now you know how to set up a headset on a Windows 7 computer.

The normal microphone gain level is no more than 20 dB. PExceeding this value may cause unpleasant noise and background.

Setting up headphones on a laptop

A laptop can use one microphone and headphone jack. The headset is used with a four-pin connector (three black rings). You already know the answer to the question of how to adjust the sound in headphones on a laptop if you carefully read the article. This is done in the same way as on a computer - through the "Sound" window. You can open it in another way: "Start" -> "Control Panel" -> "View: Large Icons" -> Sound. Next, select "Speakers" and click "Settings".

Also on laptops, a classic scheme for connecting a headset can be used - two inputs: for a microphone and, in fact, for headphones. Let's stop and once again briefly explain how to set up a headset on a laptop.

  1. Checking sound reproduction in headphones;
  2. Sound volume setting;
  3. Microphone setup.

Read how to set up Skype on a laptop with Windows 7 operating system. You can familiarize yourself with the methodology for setting up a laptop for distributing WiFi.

Connecting wireless headphones

It's time to learn how to set up wireless headphones for your computer. They work on Bluetooth technology. To get started, read the instructions. Usually, a bluetooth adapter is included with the headphones. It must be inserted into the USB port of the computer and drivers installed on it. If everything went well, then on the taskbar we will see the bluetooth icon.

Open the context menu with the right mouse button and select "Add device" from there. On the headphones, you will need to hold down the power button for a few seconds. This is usually described in the headphone manual. Then the computer will find a wireless headset within two or three minutes and ask you to enter the password that is written in the instructions. Everything, the headset is connected.

Now let's see how to set up headphones on a Windows 7 computer. You can also find headphones by right-clicking on the speaker, selecting "Playback devices" and in the "Sound" window that opens on the "Playback" tab, clicking "Setup" next to the headphones we found. Further sound settings on a windows 7 computer in headphones follow the scheme described above.

On a laptop, setting up wireless headphones is the same. But there is one caveat in how to set up headphones on a windows 7 laptop. If the laptop is already equipped with a built-in bluetooth adapter, then there is no point in installing another one.- use built-in.

Sound card manufacturers try to put all the settings together. For example, the Realtek HD Manager is suitable as a program for setting up headphones on a computer. It contains all the settings for speakers, headphones and microphones. It also allows you to apply various sound effects. Finding this program is easy - it is located in the "Control Panel". ViaRealtek HD Managerit's easy to figure out how to set up a headphone jack on a laptop.

In fact, there are several ways to set up headphones on a windows 7 computer. You just have to choose the most convenient way for you. It will consolidate your knowledge of the video on how to set up headphones on a computer.

In order to easily and quickly connect the simplest headphones to your laptop, just connect them with a Jack 3.5 plug to the audio output on your laptop.

Sometimes for the microphone to work, it is additionally required in the sound settings (depending on the operating system and audio drivers) to specify (by selecting from the drop-down list), audio connections, namely the headset (headphones), and not stationary speakers.

You can also connect wireless headphones to the laptop (the trend of recent years), you can do this using Bluetooth technology.
To do this, turn on the wireless headphones in the operating and availability mode, then turn on Bluetooth on your laptop and scan for available devices for connection.

In the list of found ones, select wireless headphones and connect to them. Sometimes the system may want a pin code (the pin code is indicated by the headphone manufacturer on the packaging) for confirmation.

Congratulations, you have now successfully learned how to connect your headphones to your laptop. You can freely use and listen to interesting information.

All modern computers, almost always, are equipped with a sound card: either it is built into the motherboard, or it is a separate board. The only important thing is that on the panel of your PC (if it has a sound card) there should be several connectors for connecting a headphone and a microphone.

For headphones, a green marking is usually used, for a microphone - pink. Sometimes, the name "line output" is used to connect speakers and headphones. Often above the connectors, in addition to color, there are also thematic pictures that will definitely help you navigate.

Back of the computer

Typically, such a socket is located on the back of the system unit. On some blocks, the same socket is on the front, for more convenient connection. By the way, on computer headphones, the connectors are also marked in green and pink (usually so, but if you take headphones for the player, then there are no marks there).

Computer headphones, moreover, with a longer wire and thicker, last longer, more comfortable for long listening. Wire with connectors from headphones with a microphone Wire with connectors from headphones with a microphone. Then it remains only to connect a pair of connectors: green with green (or a green headphone jack with a line-out on the system unit, plus pink with pink) and you can proceed to a more detailed software configuration of the device. By the way, on laptops, headphones are connected in the same way.

Usually, the connectors are taken out on the left, or from the side that looks at you (in front, sometimes called). Often many people are afraid of excessive rigidity: for some reason, the connectors on laptops are tighter and some people think that they are non-standard and you can’t connect headphones to this ...

In fact, everything is just as easy to connect.

Side panel on a laptop: there are connectors for connecting headphones and a microphone. Connecting the headphones to the computer After the headphones have been connected to the connectors on the computer's sound card, most often, the sound is already played in them and no additional settings need to be made. However, sometimes there is no sound.

Here we will dwell on this in more detail. 1) The first thing to do is to check the performance of the headphones themselves. Try to connect them with another device in the house: with a player, with a TV, music center, etc. 2) Check if the drivers for the sound card are installed on your PC. If you have sound in the speakers, then everything is in order with the drivers. If not, first go to the device manager (to do this, open the control panel, and type "manager" into the search box.

Pay attention to the lines "Audio outputs and audio inputs", as well as to "sound devices" - there should not be any red crosses there.

Primary diagnostics and troubleshooting

Check your headphones

First of all, eliminate one of the possible reasons - the failure of the headphones themselves. To do this, connect the headphones to any other device, such as a player or smartphone, and check their performance.

Make sure you select the correct socket

Some laptop models have several seemingly identical connectors for connecting sound recording and sound reproducing devices. Make sure you plug your headphones into the correct jack, usually green or with an icon next to it.

Pay attention to the sound level

No matter how trite it may sound, but sometimes the lack of sound in the headphones is caused by turning it off completely or lowering the volume level to a minimum using the function keys.

Don't forget to also check the position of the volume control if your headphones have one.

Restore the system

If problems with the headphones appeared after installing a particular program or updating the operating system, the system recovery procedure can help. Start the appropriate service and, focusing on the date of creation, select the appropriate restore point.

Update or reinstall audio adapter drivers

If System Restore didn't help, try updating your audio driver or reinstalling it. In most cases, this helps to troubleshoot problems with playing or recording sounds.

The process of updating the audio card driver:

start the "Device Manager" service;
go to the subsection "Audio outputs and audio inputs";
right-click the touchpad on the "Speakers" line;
select the line "Update drivers ...";

in the window that opens, click on the top option, which starts an automatic search for drivers on the Internet.
If there is no new software version for your video adapter model on the network, then you need to proceed to the next step, namely, reinstalling the driver.

To reinstall the audio card driver, do the following:

do the first three points of the above instructions;
select the line "Properties";
go to the "Driver" tab;
click the "Delete" button;

after the driver uninstallation process is completed, reboot the system;
go to the official web resource of your laptop manufacturer;
Download and install the latest audio card driver.
Difficult diagnosis

If all of the above elimination methods have not yielded results, it is necessary to move on to more complex diagnostics, which is impossible without certain knowledge and special tools.

At this stage, it is required to disassemble the laptop and test the audio output with a multimeter. If the audio output is damaged, it must be replaced.

operating system glitch

Finally, I would like to talk about a glitch that occurs on some laptop models when working with Windows 10. When playing sound through headphones, if the user completely turns off the sound using the function keys and then turns it back on, the sound in the headphones disappears. In this case, no reaction occurs with a slight increase or decrease in the volume level. There are two ways to solve the problem:

restart the system (which is not always convenient);
turn the volume down to zero and then turn it up again (better solution).

If you know how to connect a keyboard or any other device, then you should have a rough idea of where which ports are.

The audio card connectors are located on the back of the system unit, but now you can often find ports on the front panel.
This was done for ease of connection - you can not pull the wires through the entire body, but quickly connect the device: for example, connect a mouse. We hope that finding the right ports will not cause you any difficulties. Therefore, let's move on to studying the sound card connectors that will be needed to connect wired headphones.

Wired audio device

If you have already connected a microphone to a computer, you should be familiar with the sound card device and the connectors located on it. There is nothing complicated here - the line output (green color) is used to connect audio devices, be it headphones or speakers.

Audio card connectors

It's even easier with a laptop: here, all ports are equipped with icons that will not allow you to make a mistake when connecting.

laptop ports

Look at the wired headphone cable - it should end with a standard 3.5mm plug.

If you do not have a mini-jack at the end of the cord, but a plug of a different format, you will have to additionally purchase an adapter.
You just need to insert the headphone plug into the audio card slot and wait until the system detects a new device. You can configure the headphones using the utility that is installed with the audio card drivers. For a Realtek sound card, it looks like this:

Customize your headphones

Wireless headphones

Almost all wireless devices connect to your computer using Bluetooth technology.Adapter

Therefore, it is necessary that the headphones come with an adapter that connects via a USB interface.

Install drivers for the adapter, otherwise it will not work correctly. Drivers must be supplied with the device.
After installing the adapter, all that remains is to turn on the headphones themselves (usually they have a special power button).

No sound

We figured out how to connect headphones to a computer. But sometimes when connecting devices, problems appear, the main of which is the lack of sound. Why is there no sound

The first step is to identify where the fault is - in the headphones or in the computer. Try connecting another audio device. If it works correctly, then the headphones are faulty.

Check if the cable is damaged. Bend the cord in different places; pay special attention to the junction of the cable with the plug - usually an internal break in the conductors occurs precisely in this place.
If you are using wireless headphones, check if they are turned on. Also check your Bluetooth adapter, it might be the problem. Open "Device Manager" and see if the adapter is working properly. Check drivers

If the problem is with your computer, check your sound card driver first. It may need to be updated or reinstalled.

Start the "Audio" service. Press Win + R, enter the command "services.msc" and click "OK". Click the Services tab and check if the Windows Audio service is running.

Preparing a Computer for Connecting a Wireless Border
If you are using a laptop, then you should not have any special connection problems. Almost all models are equipped with a built-in Bluetooth wireless adapter. Another thing is if you have a desktop computer at your disposal. In this case, you will need to purchase a special adapter, which exists in two forms:

External;
Interior.
"What is their difference?" - you ask. The fact is that the first variety can be easily connected via a regular USB port. The second type can only be connected via a PCI slot.

It is up to you to decide which type to use. The only thing is that the connection via the USB input is much easier and faster.

Now let's move on to the second important factor - the software. It simply must be on a PC or laptop. The headset will not work without the appropriate drivers. You can check the availability of the necessary “firewood” by going to the device manager on your computer.

How it's done? You must enter the key combination "Start + R". You will see a window with a search field for entering. You need to enter "devmgmt.msc" in it. Next, we agree with the operation.

The next step is to check for drivers. We are looking for an item called "network adapters". Sometimes this line has a different name "Bluetooth radios". Your main target is the "Devices..." line. If it cannot be detected, then the result is the same - the software is simply not installed on the computer.

If the result is negative, then you need to install the required drivers. Next, we move on to the connection itself.

Connecting wireless headphones to a PC
Yes, when buying headphones or a headset in a store, the package should include instructions for detailed connection. However, it often happens that you buy a device with your hands or at all, someone gave it away as unnecessary. In this case, there may not be instructions. You will need to follow my instructions.

First, turn on the device. In most models, the connection takes place in the standard way, holding the button for about 15 seconds. Usually the symbol for turning on is a light bulb. Its color may vary. Next, we move on to the computer. On it we enter a window with all the hidden icons of additional functions and applications. It is located in the lower right corner. We find there the corresponding icon "B". This is Bluetooth.

Right-click on this icon. A window with items appears in front of us. The topmost should be "Add Device". Click on the line.

Thus, you will start searching for the required device. When it is found, the computer will prompt you to add it. Naturally, we agree with this. If many similar gadgets are found, then we find and select the right one.

In the next step, you will be asked to enter a code to save and properly operate the device in combination with a computer. Here you need to enter "0000". We save the data and exit. Sometimes it happens that after all this, nothing works anyway. In this case, you will have to check the drivers again. Reinstall them if necessary. Upon purchase, a special disk with software is included in the package.

Yes, sometimes you should still turn to the help of the instructions that come with the device. You may have entered the wrong code. If so, just re-enter it and save again. Don't panic ahead of time. You should try restarting your computer and headset. It often happens that after that everything starts to work properly.

Don't know how to properly connect headphones and a microphone to a computer / laptop and set them up on Windows 7 / 8.1?
Or are you having trouble configuring your audio devices?

Pick the step you're stuck on or start from scratch if you can't figure out the connectors.
All information is given step by step in the content.

The first stage is preparatory. Consider two types of 3.5mm connector: combined and "separate"

Exists two type of audio connectors ( 3.5mm): combined and "separate" (standard). You can read more about the differences between them here:,.

If you are using USB headphones and a microphone, connect them to anyone working port (preferably version 2.0 - gray) and immediately proceed to the configuration.

First you need to determine where to insert devices. To do this, you need to understand what kind of equipment we are dealing with. Let's take three configurations of audio equipment, which we will later focus on:

  • Headphones and microphone - one device, the wire contains immediately two plug (usually red and green). On the "jack" itself there is a pair of contact pads (circular strips) for the left and right ear, respectively;
  • Headphones and microphone also one device. It differs from the equipment from the first point in the presence of only the only plug. However, the "jack" has three contact "strips" for the left and right ears, as well as for powering the microphone. Typically, this connection scheme is used in mobile headsets;
  • Microphone and headphones are two individual devices that exist independently without each other (there are only two contacts, as in the first case).
Please note: conventional speaker systems 2.0 and 2.1 (subwoofer added) plug into the same jack as the headphones. speakers 5.1 , basically, imply installation through the standard 3.5mm"Jack" and the so-called "tulips"(RCA). To do this, you need a special sound card with support 5.1.
Live examples of each item are shown below.
Figure 1. Three types of audio devices.
Next, we will consider connecting each of the listed configurations, depending on the audio outputs available on your computer or laptop.

What separate audio outputs look like

The first picture shows ordinary connectors "Jack" (typical for computers using built-in and external sound cards). Figure 2. Separate "jack" connectors.

The very structure of the location of the connectors may be slightly different, this is not so important. The main feature of separate audio outputs is separate connection headphones and microphone (red and green port respectively). Consider the installation of various equipment (configurations).

  • The headphone jacks with microphone connect to the corresponding jacks on your motherboard/case/laptop;
  • Combined devices (headset) are connected only through a special adapter. Otherwise, the microphone simply will not work;
  • Separate devices: "red port" - microphone, "green port" - headphones.
With the right approach, the equipment will work. Now you can go directly to at the construction site sound. To do this, go to the chapter "".

What does the combo sound output look like?

The second picture shows combined or a "combined" audio output connector (typical for most inexpensive / thin modern laptops).
Figure 3. Combined audio output in a laptop.
Please note that this type of connector is not common.

To this audio output, you can connect both a microphone and headphones separately, as well as combined devices (for example, a mobile headset). The principle of connection - in comparison with first type audio output - changed a bit (consider our configuration):

  • Equipment with two plugs is now connected through a special adapter. Otherwise, you can “force” only one part of the device out of two (on a laptop, it’s better to choose headphones, since the microphone is usually built-in);
  • The combined device works in full;
  • Here, as in the first case, it is recommended to choose headphones for connection.
After choosing the best option and carrying out a simple procedure for connecting devices “by connectors”, proceed to the next chapter. Some subtleties of sound settings will be described there using the example of Windows 7.

The second stage is the sound configuration. How to set up headphones / microphone on a computer with Windows 7 / 8.1

Setting up standard 3.5mm headphones

let's move onto settingaudio devices.
If you are using headphones with a standard jack ( 3.5mm), then, with correct connection, the sound will automatically appear in the headphones, disappearing from the speakers. No sound from both speakers and headphones? Go to the chapter "".

USB headphone setup (sound continues to come out of the speakers or does not exist at all)

USB headphones sometimes have to be turned on by yourself. Before starting setup, make sure:

  • In the correct installation of the drivers of your audio equipment;
  • In the performance of the USB port and the headphones themselves;
This quick and easy check will help identify the culprit in your system's hardware. If no problems are found or fixed, set USBheadphones as a device "Default" v "Playback Devices" . For this you need:
  1. Right click on the icon sound in the taskbar (bottom line where the clock is located) → select the item "Playback Devices" . The settings window for audio output devices will open;
Figure 4. Open "Playback Devices".
  1. On the figure 4 the icon of disconnected headphones is shown. When you connect for the first time, the icon will be different (standard, as on the speakers). But unlike speakers connected via a regular audio output ( 5mm), the USB headphone description will be different. Need to find device containing an inscription « Generic USB Audio device » (or something similar);
  2. Click on this device → click on the button "Default" "OK" (it is also desirable to change the icon in the properties, so as not to get confused in the future).
Ready.
The sound will now go to your USB headphones.
To use the speakers again, unplug your headphones or change the setting.
With further connections, the sound will be automatically output to the “Default” device.
If necessary, proceed to the microphone setup in the next chapter.

Connecting a microphone (built-in, regular 3.5mm or USB) on Windows 7/8.1

If Microphone is not working, let's configure it in the window "Recording Devices" . To do this, you must perform the following steps:

  1. Right click on the icon "Sound" on the taskbar (where the date and time are located) → select "Recording Devices" ;
Figure 5. Open "Recording devices".
  1. On the figure 5 you can see two microphones. In this case: the first one is connected via 5mm connector, and the second one is built into the laptop (as a rule, there is a “home” phone icon in a green circle near the built-in microphone icon).
    We need define microphone that we will use (for this, find them in "Properties" and look at the connectors for their connection);
  2. Now you need to give the desired device a value "Default" by clicking on the desired item and pressing the corresponding button.
Ready.
Microphone setup is described in the next paragraph of this chapter.

Setting the working microphone

If the sound recording equipment is very quiet or vice versa "phonite" need to be configured. To configure the squelch level and test the device, do the following:

  1. Go to "Recording Devices" (described in the previous chapter);
  2. Select required right click microphone → click on "Properties" ;
  3. Go to tab "Listen" → put tick on the "Listen to this device" → in the drop-down list, select the headphones or speakers that are currently in use. When properly configured, the voice from the microphone will be output from the selected output device with some delay. So you can hear and evaluate the sound quality and volume of the microphone.
Figure 6. Turn on the "wiretapping".
  1. Now in a tab "Levels" you need to configure the device so as to ensure maximum quality. Slider « Microphone" responsible for configuration volume equipment, and the regulation of the item "Microphone Boost" - for the elimination of strangers noise and "coverage" of the distance around the microphone (try to choose no more than 20 dB, otherwise there may be problems with the "background");
  2. Disable after setting "Listening" from point 3.

The microphone is set.

If you have questions or encounter configuration problems, please continue to the next chapter.

The third stage is optional. Solving possible problems connecting and setting up headphones and microphone (no sound on Windows 7)

Usually when you connect an audio device to the jack 3.5mm audio is played or recorded automatically. But sometimes things may not work.

To resolve the issue, follow these steps:

Step 1.
Examination performance devices and audio output ports.

If the headphones/microphone are not working, try connecting them to another audio system (for example, to a telephone) to check their serviceability.
If the hardware is working correctly, continue with the next step.

Step 2
Check

To do this, open it by right-clicking on the sound icon (near the clock) → select "Open volume mixer" .

Figure 7. Tracking the actions of the sliders.
Now start any audio track (or start speaking into the microphone). The sliders of the player (browser) and the devices you need should “move”.
If the slider for the desired speaker does not respond, read more.
Step 3 (extreme case).
Reinstall driversaudio devices.

Go to "Device Manager" → find the desired sound card right click on it → "Properties" .

In the tab "Intelligence" select property « Hardware ID" → copy the first line into the search engine → download and install driver from the official website of the manufacturer.

Figure 8. Find out the "ID" of our device.
Restart your computer.
In most cases this will solve the problem.
Attention!
If the error occurred after, we recommend that you read the article "" and "Preparing for reinstallation".
In them you can find a lot of important information on solving the failures that have appeared.

To enjoy your favorite music or movie using a computer, you need to connect speakers or headphones (this is the first thing), and only then install the drivers, if necessary, then install the necessary programs and run the music or movie file, respectively. But everything is in order! Let's first connect everything you need to play sound, whether it's headphones, a headset, or speakers. The article has a lot of photos, it will not be difficult to figure it out.

Connect the speaker cable to the speaker/headphone jack, also known as the speaker jack. line-out/speaker-out(line out), it is green. This is a familiar mini-jack connector, look at the photo:

The speakers also have a power cable that needs to be connected to the network, but some low-power models are connected not to the network, but to the USB connector, that is, they will not have the usual plug. I have just such speakers on my home computer, look at the photo:

Also, right on the speaker, there can be an input for connecting headphones (this is convenient if you need to quickly switch from speakers to headphones so as not to disturb other people in the room with loud music, for example), and there will also be an on/off switch and volume control, which can be combined with a switch, and represent, for example, a wheel that, when turned, reduces the volume and turns off the speakers at minimum volume, which is accompanied by a click. This is done on the columns that are in the photo above.

However, there are speakers in which power and sound are transmitted via a USB cable. As a rule, these are portable small speakers for laptops that you can take with you on the road. That is, in this case, you need to connect only one cable. Here is an example of such a device in the photo:

The computer will also most likely have a Line In connector (line input) - a blue connector to which you can connect an input device, but not a microphone, but a player, for example. In some cases, this connector can duplicate the line output. In the photo you can see the cable for connecting the player (this is my old second player (the first was a cassette player), the memory capacity is only 256 megabytes (). Now it is only suitable for photos for the article =)

How to connect headphones with a microphone (headset) to a computer

Headphones with a microphone that connect to a computer are called headset. It is very convenient to use it if you need to communicate by voice using the Internet, record your own voice, play computer games with a friend to talk. I specifically use the headset to record video tutorials. Here are a few of them:

And this is what the headset looks like, look at the photo:

On the left side of the headband you can see the microphone in the folded state, a thickening is visible on the wire: there is a headphone volume control and a clip for attaching to clothes.

If you need to connect the headset to the computer, then there should not be any problems either, since the headset has 2 cables: one for the speakers, for playing sound, and the other for the microphone (we already figured out how to connect the microphone). They must be connected to the appropriate connectors discussed above. See what they look like:

As you can see, there are icons on the connectors to make it easier to understand.
Also, the headset, like the other audio devices listed above, can be equipped with a USB connector, which reduces its connection to finding a USB connector on your computer and connecting an audio device to it.

On modern computers, microphone and speaker jacks are usually duplicated on the front panel of the system unit, which is very convenient if you need to connect a headset - you do not have to climb behind the system unit. On the headset, the wires will be marked accordingly, that is, we connect red (pink) to the microphone input (of the same color or marked with an icon), and green, respectively, to the line input, to which the speakers are also connected.

On my old computer, for example, in order for the front connectors to work, it was necessary to connect the terminals at the back, there were wires hanging there, and one of them did not match in color, but by the method of elimination it was easy to guess where to connect it. It was inconvenient and had to be done like this:

On my new computer, I don't need to switch anything, and there are connectors on the front and back. Speakers are constantly connected at the back, and a headset is connected at the front if you need to chat via the Internet. In fact, these wires are just an extension cord. By the way, you can purchase it if you have microphone and speaker inputs only at the back, then you can connect it to the rear connector, fix it somewhere closer and more accessible, because it’s inconvenient to get to the back wall of the system unit. This is what the extension looks like:

An extension cord costs about $4 to $20. The cost depends on the manufacturer of course and on the length, which can vary approximately within 1m - 10m (you can find more). It is called correctly "jack-jack extension cable", and depending on the type of connector, it can be signed as:

- MiniJack-MiniJack extension either there may be marks like a MiniJack-MiniJack 3.5 mm extension, or you may also find such a mark, an example of a designation in one of the stores:

Headphone extension cable SPARKS SN1033, Jack 3.5 (m) - Jack 3.5 (f), 3m - in general, this is a mini-jack, the diameter of 3.5 millimeters () tells us this, and in parentheses - these are the designations (m) male - the "father" connector and (f) female - the "mother" connector. It is this extension cord that will come in handy if you don’t have enough headphone, headset, or speaker cables. You can search the Internet or ask in a store and how simple a “headphone extension cable” will help you.

extension Jack-Jack- may be useful for some types of headphones, an example of a name:

Headphone extension cable, straight cable, 1/4″ TRS Jack (male) - 1/4″ TRS Jack (female)

the type of connector (1/4 inch - Jack) and the type of extension cord are indicated: "father" - "mother"

if you need to connect a guitar, then you need a cable "father" - "father"

Also, so that the wires do not interfere and do not break when bent and serve for a long time, there are corner adapters that are indispensable if the back wall of the system unit is close enough to the wall and the wire is bent (although the system unit should not be close to the wall so that air exchange is not hindered ). By the way, such an adapter can simplify the connection to the rear panel of the system unit, since it does not have to be moved away, but can be connected from the side. In the photo, just such an adapter:

To be honest, I only met them on sale a couple of times, although in some cases they are definitely useful.

How to connect speakers and microphone to laptop

On laptops, there are usually only two connectors: for connecting speakers and connecting speakers. Most often, in front or on the side, they may not be marked with a color, but then they will definitely be marked with a pictogram, no one will confuse you on purpose (pictograms are most often used). Look at the photo: the required connectors are marked with pictograms:

And if you are the owner of portable speakers connected to USB, then you need to look for this particular connector. In the photo above, it is just to the left of the microphone jack.

What should I do if my laptop only has one headset/headphone/microphone jack?

This question can be found more and more often on the forums and in the comments. Yes, indeed, in many modern laptops, netbooks and ultrabooks there is only one headset combo audio jack, instead of the usual two. For example, in a modern ThinkPad X1 Carbon Ultrabook, there is only one connector:

What to do? Understanding!

First advice: read the instructions carefully so as not to spoil the port! You may not be able to connect a microphone to the jack, but you can connect a headset or just headphones. There are models in which you can connect either headphones or a microphone, but you definitely need to read the instructions for what you can connect and what not! Here is an example: in the picture, the instruction page for the Lenovo S100. It says that you can connect a headset, you can connect headphones, but you can’t connect a regular microphone!

So, you need to work with a headset, what should you do? The solution depends on which headset you have.

1) If you have USB headset, then everything is simple: connect it to the USB connector.

2) If you have regular headset, as described in the article above, then you need an adapter from a 4-pin 3.5 mm Jack to headphones and a microphone, which will have a special four-pin connector (“headset”) designed for a combined headset device, for example, an adapter Gembird CCA-417. A 4-pin connector will have 3 strips:

3) You can just buy special headset with combo, to do this, type in Yandex.Market or in the search " headset mini jack 3.5 mm combo» the choice is quite large with prices ranging from $10 to $100 and more

You can also purchase a "native" headset from the manufacturer of your laptop / netbook. Here, for example, is a headset for Lenovo ThinkPad. It comes with an adapter for a laptop with two connectors (the reverse of what we considered in paragraph 2) and a case. On the Lenovo official website, such a headset costs about $20.

In all cases, in addition to connecting the device, you must also perform the following steps:

  • install sound card driver if needed
  • configure (meaning the setting in Windows itself) - if someone has problems with this particular item (the microphone or speakers do not work after connecting), then write in the comments which device, which computer and operating system

In today's article, we will consider in detail the process of connecting headphones (including those with a microphone and speakers) to a computer and laptop. In general, everything is simple.

In general, this allows you to expand the possibility of working at a computer. Well, of course, first of all, you can listen to music and at the same time not disturb anyone; use Skype or play online. With a headset, it's much more convenient.

How to connect headphones and a microphone to a computer: we understand the connectors

All modern computers, almost always, are equipped with a sound card: either it is built into the motherboard, or it is a separate board. The only important thing is that on the panel of your PC (if it has a sound card) there should be several connectors for connecting a headphone and a microphone. For the former, green markings are usually used, for the latter, pink. Sometimes the name "line output" is used. Often above the connectors, in addition to color, there are also thematic pictures that will definitely help you navigate.

By the way, on computer headphones, the connectors are also marked in green and pink (usually so, but if you take a headset for the player, then there are no marks there). But computer ones, in addition, have a long and high-quality wire, which last much longer, well, they are more convenient for long listening.

Then it remains only to connect a pair of connectors: green with green (or a green connector with a line-out on the system unit, plus pink with pink) and you can proceed to a more detailed software configuration of the device.

By the way, on laptops, headphones are connected in the same way. Usually, the connectors are taken out on the left, or from the side that looks at you (in front, sometimes called). Often many people are afraid of excessive rigidity: for some reason, the connectors on laptops are tighter and some people think that they are non-standard and you can’t connect headphones to this.

In fact, everything is just as easy to connect.

In new models of laptops, combined connectors (they are also called headset) began to appear for connecting a headset with a microphone. In appearance, it practically does not differ from the pink and green connectors that have already become familiar, except for the color - it is usually not marked in any way (just black or gray, to match the body color). A special icon is drawn next to such a connector (as in the picture below).

Why is there no sound

After the headphones have been connected to the connectors on the computer's sound card, most often, the sound is already played in them and no additional settings need to be made.

However, sometimes there is no sound. Here we will dwell on this in more detail.

  1. The first thing to do is to check the functionality of the headset. Try to connect them with another device in the house: with a player, with a TV, music center, etc.
  2. Check if the sound card is installed on your PC. If you have sound in the speakers, then everything is in order with the drivers. If not, first go to the device manager (to do this, open the control panel, and type “manager” into the search box, see the screenshot below).
  3. Pay attention to the lines "Audio outputs and audio inputs", as well as to "sound devices" - there should not be any red crosses or exclamation marks. If they are, reinstall the drivers.
  4. If everything is in order with the headphones and drivers, then most often the lack of sound is due to the sound settings in Windows, which, by the way, can be set to a minimum! Pay attention first to the lower right corner: there is a speaker icon.
  5. You should also go to the control panel in the "sound" tab.
  6. Here you can see how the volume settings are set. If the sound settings are turned down to the minimum, turn them up.
  7. Also, by running the sound sliders (shown in green in the screenshot below), we can conclude whether the sound is played at all on the PC. As a rule, if everything is fine, the strip will constantly change in height.
  8. By the way, if you have connected headphones with a microphone, you should also go to the "record" tab. It shows the operation of the microphone. See picture below.

    The best option in this case would be a connection with one line output. That is, the speakers and headphones will be connected in parallel: the sound will be both there and there at the same time. Just when the speakers are unnecessary - they are easy to turn off using the power button on their body. And the sound will always be, just if they are unnecessary - you can put them aside.

    In order to connect in this way, you need a small splitter, the issue price is 100-150 rubles. You can buy such a splitter in any store that specializes in various cables, disks, and other little things for computers.

    The microphone from the headphones with this option is connected as standard, to the microphone jack. Thus, we get the ideal way: no need to constantly re-connect with speakers.

    By the way, some system units have a front panel with headphone jacks. If you have a block of this type, then you will not need any splitters at all.
