At the moment, the lineup is no longer available. At the start of sales, the average price in stores was $ 249 and $ 349.

Overview

At AMD, after entering a new technical process, it was decided to divide the general production series into subgroups. Therefore, on the basis of the 28nm technical process, 4 lines were formed, which are presented in the table:

The HD 7800 with a Pitcairn GPU uses the Graphic Core Next microarchitecture. The series was launched in March 2012 and is no longer in production today.

At one time, video cards from Pitcairn were quite popular and showed an excellent price / quality ratio. For 2018, the current series is not popular and it is extremely difficult to find a device in a new state. Despite the fact that the graphics core is already outdated, in an assembly with a powerful processor, a PC can handle various games at medium and high settings.

What games will run on AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series

Graphics cards were released back in 2012, but they can still be used on modern toys. Tests in games AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series were carried out with the following hardware:

  • Processor: Core I5 6500 3.2 GHz.
  • RAM: 16 GB DDR4 2133 Dual.
  • Hard drive: Hitachi 1TB.
  • Motherboard: Asus H170M-Plus.
  • Resolution: 1920x1080px.

The results are as follows:

Name of the game

Graphics quality
Assassins creed syndicate Hight 31
WarThunder Cinema (Ultra) 55-65
Quantum Break The average 30-42
Assassins Creed Unity The average 30
Shadow warrior 2 High 35-45
Dying light High 40-50
Fallout 4 Ultra 38-43
Gta 5 Above average 45-50
DOOM High 40
Rise Of The Tomb Raider High 30-40
Warface High 90-100
The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine High 25-35
World of tanks High 60-80

Overall performance is highly dependent on the correct combination of processor and graphics card. If you take a powerful modern generation processor like Ryzen or Core I5, then they will be able to show high FPS in most modern games, even with an old video card.

After analyzing the technical characteristics and tests in games, we come to the following conclusions: it is not recommended to buy for powerful games in 2018, it is better to choose a newer model.

The performance will be enough for comfortable homework and for running multiplayer toys like CS: GO, World Of Tanks.

How to overclock a video card

To get the best performance, you can overclock your AMD Radeon HD 7800. To do this, you will need to install and configure the driver.

The main changes need to be made in the "Games" section. If you use a modern driver, the profiles can be customized for each video game.

Go to the desired profile for the "Frame rate control" setting. By default, the video card squeezes out the maximum FPS and spends all the resources on it.

For a comfortable game of shooters, 60 frames per second are enough. For CS: GO, WarFace, WarThunder, it is enough to set the limit at 70 FPS.

The OverDrive setting allows you to adjust the operating parameters: the frequency of the GPU and memory, the efficiency of the fans and the level of power consumption. These parameters must be configured individually for each PC build.

Download drivers for AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series

To download drivers for Radeon HD 7800 Series, use the proprietary autosearch program. You can download it on the official website of the manufacturer. There you can also find drivers for each OS version: Windows 7, Windows 10, etc.

AMD has officially unveiled a new series of video cards based on the 28nm GCN microarchitecture - AMD Radeon HD 7800... At the moment, it includes two models: and. The new items are based on the AMD "Pitcairn Pro" and AMD "Pitcairn XT" graphics processors, which operate at a clock frequency of 860 MHz and 1000 MHz, respectively. Thus, the video card will become the second in the company's lineup (after AMD Radeon HD 7770) with the name "Ghz Edition".

The solution is equipped with 16 computing units, 1024 stream processors, 64 texture units and 32 ROP units. The video subsystem of the novelty is made up of 256-bit chips of the GDDR5 standard with a total capacity of 2 GB. Their nominal clock frequency is 1200 MHz, and their effective clock is 4800 MHz.

"South Islands"

First, a little about AMD's labeling of its latest products. The manufacturer has divided them into three levels according to performance. The codename "Cape Verde" refers to the Radeon HD 7700. The name "Pitcairn" hides today's test takers, the Radeon HD 7870 and HD 7850. The high-end products are called the "Tahiti" or the Radeon HD 7900. This is shown more clearly below.

  • Entry Level = Cape Verde = Radeon HD 7700 Series;
  • Mainstream = Pitcairn = Radeon HD 7800 Series;
  • High Performance Products = Tahiti = Radeon HD 7900 Series.

That is, at the moment, AMD has covered all market segments with their 28 nm graphics chips. Only the release of a dual-core video card based on Tahiti chips is expected. The tentative name is Radeon HD 7990.

Features of the AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series

The graphics processor Radeon HD 7800 (Pitcairn) has about 2.8 billion transistors and the Graphic Core Next microarchitecture. As mentioned above, the Radeon HD 7850 (Pitcairn Pro) chip has 16 computing units, and its maximum TDP is 130 watts. For the Radeon HD 7870 (Pitcairn XT), these figures are 20 and 175, respectively.

The slide below shows the main specifications of the Radeon HD 7850 and HD 7870 video cards

2GB GDDR5 memory is already becoming the standard for most mid to high end models. Thanks to 256-bit. bus and a high clock frequency of 1200 MHz (4800 MHz effective), the bandwidth is 154 GB / s. This will have a positive impact on the performance in games with high resolution and picture quality.

PCI Express 3 interface

In the second half of 2011, almost all motherboard manufacturers presented their motherboard models with the 3rd generation PCI Express interface. With the release of the Radeon HD 7000 series, video cards with this interface appeared. PCI Express 3 has twice the bandwidth (32 Gb / s) than the previous generation PCI Express. Compared to PCIe 2, the bandwidth on each lane has been doubled from 500 MB / s to 1 Gb / s.

Naturally, to take advantage of the new PCIe 3, you need not only a video card and a motherboard with this interface, but also support from the processor (from the Ivy Bridge family, not all models will support PCIe 3).

Eyefinity 2.0

AMD has gone further with its Eyefinity technology, which is designed to display images across multiple monitors. Thanks to the high processing power of the HD 7000 series and support for Eyefinity 2.0, you can now display images with a total resolution of 16000 x 16000 on multiple monitors. This allows you to display the image on 5 displays with a resolution of 2560x1600 installed in landscape orientation. To work with such resolutions, the older models of the family are equipped with a record 3 GB GDDR5 (HD 7970 and HD 7950).

AMD Catalyst drivers will support custom resolution starting in February. This means you will be able to set the required resolution depending on the configuration of the displays in Eyefinity. As of Catalyst 12.2, there is an option to install the Start menu on a display that is convenient for you, and not on the far left, as it was before. In addition, Eyefinity 2 supports HD3D stereo image output. It supports the combination of three monitors that work in 3D mode.

Improved tessellation

AMD's Radeon HD 7000 family of graphics cards feature a ninth generation tessellator and have seen significant performance gains in geometry processing in modern games. The core of GCN still includes two Graphics Engines, but if earlier they contained blocks for tessellation and rasterization, now they consist of an arbitrary number of pipelines designed to process geometry and pixels.

AMD Radeon HD 7800 graphics cards support HDMI 1.4a, which allows you to display 120 Hz (60 Hz per eye), which allows you to display 3D images. With earlier versions of HDMI, this was not possible. Starting in December, AMD included HD3D and Eyefinity interoperability in their drivers.

DirectX 11.1

Video cards of the Radeon 7000 family will support the upcoming DirectX 11.1. It is too early to say what this will give in practice, since DX 11.1 will be released alongside Windows 8. The main advantages of the new API are indicated as follows:

  • Independent rasterization;
  • Flexible combination of graphic computing and video processing;
  • Native Stereo 3D support.

AMD Unified Video Decoder

It is the hardware part of AMD GPUs responsible for decoding the video stream. The Radeon 7000 UVF series has received some enhancements. In general, UVD has retained all the functions of its predecessors, namely support for H.264 / AVCHD, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 / DivX, VC-1 / WMV profile D, Multi-View Codec (MVC), Video Codec Engine ( VCE), AMD Steady Video 2.0. Added support for Dual Stream HD + HD format.

Radeon R9 270 Review | New or updated?

"GPU Pitcairn has 20 Compute Units (CU), each of which consists of four Vector Units (VU). Each vector block, in turn, includes 16 stream processors and one texture processing unit. In total, we get 1280 stream processors and 80 texture units for the senior representative of the 7800 line. Radeon HD 7850 a stripped-down version of GPU Pitcairn is used: four computational units are removed, which gives a total of 1024 stream processors and 64 texture processing units.

AMD has retained all eight ROPs, each of which consists of four Color ROPs, giving up to 32 ROPs per cycle. Four 64-bit memory controllers are connected to the ROP units through a common interface. This gives us a 256-bit memory bus. "

So if Radeon R9 270X will replace Radeon HD 7870, then Radeon R9 270 should replace Radeon HD 7850 with a stripped-down version of the GPU, right? However, if you look at the specs, frequencies and prices of the current AMD lineup, an interesting thing emerges.

Radeon HD 7850 Radeon HD 7870 Radeon R9 270 Radeon R9 270X

Power connectors 1 x 6-pin 2 x 6-pin 1 x 6-pin 2 x 6-pin
Price $140-$220 $170-$230 $180 $200-$220

We were surprised to find that Radeon R9 270 is not overclocked Radeon HD 7850, as was expected. This is, in fact, Radeon HD 7870 with a core frequency reduced by 75 MHz, a GDDR5 video memory frequency increased by 200 MHz and a thermal package reduced by 25 W at a price of $ 180.

Let's look at frequencies first. It looks like a lower core clock and faster RAM are needed to keep up with older performance. Radeon HD 7870... However, that doesn't make sense. Why downgrade the Pitcairn frequency and spend more money on more expensive GDDR5 memory? We've only got one guess: AMD wants performance Radeon HD 7870 while still meeting the limitations of a single 6-pin auxiliary power connector. As you can see, the heat package for Radeon R9 270 is 150 W versus 175 W Radeon HD 7870... AND Radeon R9 270X, and Radeon HD 7870 require two auxiliary connectors.

As for the $ 180 price tag, it turns out that Radeon R9 270$ 20 cheaper than recently introduced Radeon R9 270X, which has the same memory frequency (1400 MHz), but with a 125 MHz higher core frequency (1050 MHz). Suppose the cards will actually cost $ 180 at the time of release. In this case, Radeon R9 270 will be $ 10 cheaper GeForce GTX 660- its main competitor from Nvidia. Also, with such a price Radeon R9 270 on average it will be cheaper Radeon HD 7870, which has become noticeably more accessible over the past few months. But this was a temporary phenomenon, as retailers wanted to unload warehouses. We have already learned from AMD that Radeon HD 7870 and Radeon HD 7850 will soon disappear from sale.

It is also worth noting that using the Pitcairn / Curacao processor, Radeon R9 270 and Radeon R9 270X do not support the new AMD TrueAudio feature. To do this, you need a Radeon R7 260 or Radeon R9 290... Like other chips based on the GCN architecture, it implements support for the Mantle API from AMD, although it is still too early to talk about the success of this technology.

Please be aware that the new Radeon R9 series (270, 270X, 280X, 290 and 290X) does not include AMD Never Settle kits. For example, buying Radeon R7 260X at the American online store, you can choose two games from the Silver tier of the AMD Never Settle package. In addition, AMD provides customers with Battlefield 4... In this she relies on retailers and partners of the company, who independently choose models with a game coupon in the kit, and there are only 1000 such coupons.

So the main question is: how Radeon R9 270 looks in comparison with Radeon HD 7870? How good is the novelty next to GeForce GTX 660? The test results will help us to answer these questions. But first, let's take a look at our test sample.

Sapphire Dual-X R9 270

Sapphire Dual-X R9 270 has a moderate "factory" overclocking. The processor handles instructions at 945 MHz (out of the original 925 MHz), while GDDR5 memory clocks in at 1400 MHz. However, our Radeon R9 270 operates at frequencies similar to the AMD reference card.

The Dual-X card uses Sapphire's proprietary cooler with dual axial fans.

Sapphire Radeon R9 270 Equipped with two two-pin DVI connectors, HDMI and DisplayPort output. Since the card has a thermal package of 150W, it only has one 6-pin auxiliary power connector. AMD requires that Radeon R9 270 was limited to only one CrossFire connector, that is, only two cards can be combined in a bundle.

Radeon R9 270 Review | Test bench and benchmarks

In our lab, we have largely gotten rid of mechanical hard drives and are using solid-state drives instead, which do not have I / O latency. Samsung has sent drives to our offices Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB, so we use them as standard.

Naturally, discrete graphics require a stable power supply, so XFX sent us an 80 PLUS Bronze certified PRO850W PSU. The modular PSU has a single + 12V rail, rated for 70. According to XFX, this model provides continuous (non-peak) power up to 850 watts at 50 degrees Celsius (noticeably more than in most cases).

We tested Radeon R9 270 along with three other maps based on Pitcairn / Curacao: Radeon HD 7850 , Radeon HD 7870 and Radeon R9 270X... Also to measure the difference between Radeon R9 270 and the junior model we included in testing Radeon R7 260X with Bonaire chip (it replaces Radeon HD 7850). Nvidia's competitors present GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost and GeForce GTX 660 .

Radeon R9 270 Review | Test results

Call Of Duty: Ghosts

Let's start with the new Call of Duty: Ghosts game. Soon we will publish a full-fledged analysis of the performance in this game, and today you will see what video cards are capable of in this long-awaited game at a price of up to $ 200 at a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels with high quality details.

Radeon R9 270 performance is not inferior Radeon HD 7870, this is what we expected. New is a little faster GeForce GTX 660 and significantly overtakes Radeon HD 7850 and GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost showing almost the same results.

The Curacao / Pitcairn GPUs show the lowest frame time jitter, although the game generates a lot more bursts than we would like. But let's not forget that the game is still completely new, and it is quite possible that future patches will add stability to it.

Battlefield 4

Battlefield 4 is only a few weeks older than the new Call of Duty, but its Frostbite 3 engine is undoubtedly more modern. How will it show itself Radeon R9 270 in a new generation blockbuster?

It is not surprising that Radeon R9 270 goes on the same level with Radeon HD 7870 . GeForce GTX 660 breathes down her back, and Radeon HD 7850 the results are approaching GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost .

V Battlefield 4 frame rate fluctuations are lower than in Call Of Duty: Ghosts, with slightly more jumps on the Radeon graphics.

Metro: Last Light

The Metro series is known for high graphics loads at the highest detail settings. To get acceptable frame rates with our cards, we had to lower the graphics quality.

You could play it safe and lower a few more parameters, because in the most "difficult" places for the graphics subsystem, the frame rate goes under the 30 FPS mark. Be that as it may, the finishing order does not differ from the test results in Call of Duty and Battlefield 4 .

Overall, Metro: Last Light shows low fluctuations in frame time, but it does show some noticeable jumps. Moreover, this effect is noticeable in all tested cards.

BioShock Infinite

BioShock Infinite is powered by the new Epic Unreal engine. As you know, it is less demanding on the graphics subsystem.

We see for the first time how Radeon R9 270 overtakes the old Radeon HD 7870... Memory bandwidth seems to be playing a key role here, not GPU speed.

GeForce GTX 660 in this game proved to be just wonderful, overtaking Radeon R9 270X .

It looks like the engine is well optimized as we are seeing very low latency between frames. There is nothing to worry about.

Tomb raider

The new implementation of the game features a new approach to the main character - Lara Croft, including an impressive simulation of real hair through the TressFX function.

As always, Radeon HD 7870 and a new one in a sample of 300 frames.

Company Of Heroes 2

Company of Heroes 2 is the sequel to Relic's hit RTS World War II. We've seen how it puts a high load on the CPU and GPU, so let's take a look at the results.

The Radeon cards perform as expected, while the Nvidia GeForce accelerators are left behind. It looks like the driver developers have yet to work on the game.

All cards exhibit strange behavior in the frame time fluctuation graph. Bursts lasting up to 5-10 seconds are observed at regular intervals. We weren't sure how these metrics would affect the average performance calculations, so we excluded the Company of Heroes results from the overall chart on the last page.

Radeon R9 270 Review | Energy and temperature tests

Our German colleagues received a factory overclocked video card from Asus, so our results with a card with reduced frequencies may differ from the results of the editors in Germany.

We see good idle power consumption figures when working with one monitor. However, AMD cards are noticeably outperformed by Nvidia when connecting multiple displays.

GeForce GPUs outperform Blu-ray playback, but AMD cards are regaining their ground in gaming and computing.

Particularly impressive is the new Radeon R9 270 as it has factory overclocking.

This graph says little about the reference cooler. Radeon R9 270 however, the Asus Direct CU II handles the chip's heat dissipation well, and keeps temperatures low for prolonged gaming tasks. Under load, the temperature of the GPU does not exceed 70 degrees Celsius.

Radeon R9 270 Review | A worthy replacement for the Radeon HD 7870

How Radeon R9 270 Radeon R9 270 GeForce GTX 660 Radeon R9 270 will soon decline.

Anyway, Radeon R9 270 does not change the alignment in the market, as it did Radeon R9 280X... However, it is a cost effective solution with more modest power requirements. If the price GeForce GTX 660 will remain at the current level, then Radeon R9 270 is likely to get a recommendation in our monthly article cycle
