Programs for overclocking the video card. Overclocking graphics cards with software How to best use artifact tester

The development of technology not only opens up new devices for computer peripherals for us, but also allows us to increase the potential of already purchased devices. It's about overclocking an AMD video card.

This process does not represent any complex operation. You don't need to be a genius or a programmer to improve the capabilities of a device. It is enough to carefully read the instructions and use the correct AMD.

What it is?

Perhaps all experienced PC users have come across the concept of "overclocking". This term came from English and has been adapted to our language. Therefore, overclocking and overclocking are synonymous.

Both concepts describe the process of increasing the frequency of one of the components of the system. In our case, we are talking about an AMD video card. Overclocking can increase the frequency and, accordingly, the voltage, which will lead to an improvement in the speed of the device.

Overclocking can be effective and ineffective. In the first case, the user will be able to reach the maximum frequency value with stable operation. In the second, system errors and adapter malfunctions may occur.

It is important to understand that overclocking your AMD Radeon HD graphics card will affect heat dissipation, power consumption, and noise.

Objectives and methods

As mentioned above, overclocking is needed to improve the performance of a device, in our case a video card. The process has a downside - noise, increased heat generation, instability. All this can be caused by:

  • incorrect work of viduha;
  • non-observance of overclocking rules;
  • insufficiently efficient operation of the cooling system;
  • lack of food;
  • errors in the adjustment of indicators.

You can overclock not only the video card, but also processors, memory, motherboards, routers and other devices.

There are several overclocking methods:

  • Using BIOS. Here you need to set higher frequencies of one or more devices in the system.
  • BIOS update. In this case, you can use alternative software, which will already have increased frequency and voltage.
  • Special branded or third-party programs.

Utility

It just so happened that programs for overclocking the AMD Radeon video card proved to be the most effective. Therefore, it is important to consider several options for utilities that will help you quickly, easily, and most importantly, effectively do overclocking.

Among them:

  • Over Drive;
  • ATITool;
  • MSI Afterburner;
  • ATI Tray Tools.

Over drive

Very often, for overclocking AMD Radeon graphics cards, they turn to this program. But there is one interesting fact that you need to know before using it.

The fact is that, in addition to software with this name, there is a section of the same name in the proprietary program. Both options have the same tasks. But there is one detail.

The fact is that an independent utility is aimed at overclocking the processor, and the section specializes in video cards.

For the adapter, you need to install AMD Radeon Software Crimson. This software and driver for branded "red" video cards.

The last update of the utility was released a year ago. Since then, she has worked with many series of desktop adapters. For example, it can easily cope with overclocking the AMD Radeon HD 7700 video card. To improve this model, you need to go to the Over Drive section in the program.

The disadvantage of this option is that it is possible to raise the frequency indicators only up to the values set by the manufacturer. That is, the performance gain in this case will be insignificant.

ATITool

Another good utility, but somewhat outdated, since it was updated in 2011. However, it is an automated program that can work with AMD and Nvidia graphics cards.

The software, in addition to overclocking, is engaged in monitoring, managing general and special settings. Based on the name, it is clear that it is focused more on video cards of "red" models. Hence, there are so many features from this particular company.

The utility works on a module with automatic overclocking. In the process, she tries to select the frequency by comparing the installed 3D picture with the one that is displayed at a certain speed of the adapter.

But since the program is still somewhat outdated, there is no point in talking a lot about it. It can only be useful for overclocking an old-generation AMD video card.

ATI Tray Tools

As the name of the program suggests, it was also developed a long time ago (ATI was conditionally renamed AMD in 2006). Nevertheless, it continues to function stably. It became popular due to the fact that it can fine tune and overclock video cards from the "red" company.

It is located in the system tray and gives access to many options. Works with the oldest versions of Windows. Among the latest updates, it supports the "seven". Starting from version Radeon 9500, works with all models. This is one of the few programs for overclocking an AMD video card in Russian.

What can this software do? It supports a lot of proprietary technologies of the company, and also works with some functions. It can overclock in automatic mode, switching to a 3D picture. Creates game profiles and configures global hotkeys. Copes with monitoring temperatures in the system, performs low-level color correction.

There are functions for low-level overclocking and the creation of special profiles for this process. Supports tons of useful plugins, takes screenshots and much more.

MSI Afterburner

Despite the fact that this utility has been working for more than 8 years, the developers still support it. For example, an updated version of MSI Afterburner 4.4.0 was released a month ago.

The main feature of this application is that it is used almost always, regardless of the device manufacturer. This is due to many factors.

When this software was released in 2009, it was often associated with yet another EVGA Precision branded work. But it is the product from MSI that has become a universal overclocking tool.

A lot of time has passed since the release, the software interface has changed dramatically. Although overclocking an AMD graphics card is still simple and straightforward. The last update presented the final release of the program, which was devoid of bugs and endowed with a bunch of innovations.

The software now supports graphics adapters on the Vega 10 GPU platform. Now it can regulate the voltage on the latest generation cards from Nvidia (GTX 1030, GTX 1070 Ti, GTX 1080 Ti and Titan Xp). The program is now displayed in relation to the processor load, frame rates, temperatures. The new shell was named Cyborg White.

Cryptocurrencies

It would seem, how are cryptocurrencies related to our topic? While the whole world is watching the growth of bitcoin, part of the earth's population is trying to make money on it. For this, many acquire special stations that could help in this matter.

Mining is a collection of computational tasks that helps in the production of bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies. For everything to go efficiently, you need to have a productive system. Some decide to buy special equipment - ASICs. And someone decides to improve the existing system. Therefore, you need to overclock the AMD Radeon video card for mining.

Peculiarities

Cryptocurrency mining equipment can be chosen forever. One not bad option is the Sapphire NITRO GPU + Radeon RX 580 Limited Edition. This is a great graphics card model that was developed by Sapphire.

It has an increased frequency thanks to factory overclocking, and also improved auxiliary components. To understand the overclocking features of this model, it is important to briefly review its technical characteristics.

The video card is powered by 2304 stream processors and is manufactured using a 14 nm process technology. The clock speed reaches 1.4 GHz. There are built-in video memory chips of 8 GB GDDR5 type. The model consumes 225 watts.

These figures may differ slightly for the same model, but from a different manufacturer.

Overclocking for mining

It so happened that in order to mine cryptocurrencies, it is necessary to improve not the processor frequency, but the memory speed. Hence, a slightly different technology for overclocking the AMD Radeon RX 580 video card.

For example, for an Nvidia device, you need to use three utilities:

    GPU-Z, which monitors all parameters of the video card;

    MSI Afterburner, already familiar to us, is needed directly for overclocking the adapter;

    any benchmark that effectively handles stress testing of the system.

It doesn't matter if you are overclocking to improve gaming performance or mining, the process consists of three steps. First, we increase the frequency indicator, then we check the behavior of the system in a stress test, and then we can analyze the behavior of the device in the game.

You need to increase the frequency carefully. It is better to let the process itself take longer and you will increase by 40-50 MHz, than you will not be able to find the critical indicator of the chip speed. If you get an error, then you need to go back to the previous value that was set and use it. The same process must be repeated for the video memory.

In the case of a device from AMD, everything is somewhat simpler. You just need to change the adapter indicators. Because of this process, many have chosen the RX series for mining. The models in it differ in the frequency of the RAM. Therefore, when choosing, you need to look only at this indicator.

The most advanced parameters are for 8 GB models. But some have already gotten used to working with the 4 GB version, since you can both overclock the RAM and change the timings.

Conclusion

Overclocking a graphics card is a simple process. Often, inexperienced users are afraid to do something, thinking that they can ruin the entire system. In fact, there is nothing wrong with overclocking. The video card will not burn out under increased loads. It will just give an error and reset all settings.

Therefore, when overclocking, it is important to do everything consistently and carefully. In this case, you can achieve the most effective result for both simple games and mining.

In the case of AMD graphics cards, MSI Afterburner software will definitely help. This program can handle almost any model. There is an option to use a proprietary utility that may come with the adapter drivers. But, unfortunately, they are not always successful and effective.

Together with it, you will have to install a couple more programs that will help analyze the overclocking process itself, and then test the performance result. Such tools may also be included.

If you have an outdated card model, you can try using ATITool and ATI Tray Tools. They are focused on older generation video cards. Although it is somewhat more difficult to work with them, since their interface has remained the same and the functionality does not correspond to modern requirements.

Sooner or later, almost every user comes to the conclusion that he does not have enough frames during the game. And then the question of upgrading the system arises, or rather, replacing the old video card with a more powerful one.

But, the financial component makes adjustments, and an ordinary gamer eventually begins to think about overclocking a video card at home in order to reach the maximum that was originally laid down by the manufacturer. Below are universal utilities for your attention. They allow overclocking video cards, whether it be NVIDIA or ATI. They are also the most popular among the majority of users.

List of programs for overclocking the video card

RivaTuner

This program is a product of Russian developers, but the Russian language is not included in the interface - only English. This program has a very wide range of options for configuring NVIDIA video cards. It allows you to create your own patch scripts (scripts for replacing / changing machine code) and apply them in your work.

It should be noted that this program is practically the only one of its kind, which allows the user to perform the finest settings for the video card. This program also has a number of glitches,

PowerStrip

This program is written directly to the system tray and does not interfere with the work of other programs at all. It also supports a multilingual interface (Russian language is present).

The only drawback of this program is its conditional free-of-charge. It is distributed as a shareware program. But this is unlikely to be a big problem for users.

ATI Tray Tools

This program is very simple. Like the PowerStrip utility, it also sits in the tray. This program allows overclocking directly from the menu. In it, you can create your own profiles with personal settings and load them as needed.

The ATITool utility is designed specifically for low-level overclocking and monitoring of ATI video cards. It has two interesting features. The first is that ATITool can test the stability of the entire graphics card. The second is to automatically enable the overclocking function when switching from 2D to 3D mode, which allows you to somewhat save the power consumed by the card and apply overclocking only when it is really necessary. This program does not allow you to configure the video card and serves only for overclocking.

In my opinion, the best utility for ATI is ATI Tray Tools

Let's see how to use it.

1. Install the ATI Tray Tools program.

2. Then we go into the window called "Overclocking settings".

If the measured temperature is acceptable - continue

4. If your video card has separate frequencies, you should choose to change the 3D frequencies.

6. Raise one of the frequencies by about 10 percent. Click the "Apply" button.

7. Next, click on "Show 3D Window", and then - "Scan for Artifacts". We are waiting for about 10 minutes, during this time there should be no artifacts! If the counter does not reach 10 minutes and resets, finding artifacts, you need to slightly lower the frequency and start checking again.

8. If the test was successful, you need to increase the frequency in steps of about 5-10 MHz, after increasing we do a test and find the maximum possible frequency.

10. The video card is overclocked. We launch any demanding game. We play for about two hours, all this time there should be no artifacts, otherwise the frequencies should be reduced.

11. If point 10 was completed successfully, then you should go to the overclocking menu again, click on the "Record profile" button, save the profile under a name. Next, put a checkmark next to the items "Recover from sleep mode" and "Load profile with ATT".

13. Check if ATI Tray Tools autostart is worth it. If not, then it should be put.
That's all! Enjoy the increased performance of your card!

These are the programs for overclocking absolutely any video cards, the main thing to remember is that overclocking, although it increases performance, reduces the shelf life of your video card.

ATI Tray Tools F.A.Q.

Overclocking Module

ATT does not allow to increase the frequency of the video processor anymore! What to do?

Go to the program settings (Tools & Options) in the General Options tab in the Overclocking Limits section and increase the Overclock limit. By default, the maximum allowable frequency is used as 50% plus the frequency of the video card flashed into the BIOS.

What can be changed safely in timings and won't it damage the video card?

You can change any timings, but you need to do it very carefully, otherwise you can damage the video card. There is no universal method for editing timings. Each type of memory has its own timings, as well as its own overclocking potential.

What the Clock generation method does

ATT can overclock the card in two modes.

  • High Precision - Accurate acceleration mode in which ATT will calculate the correct divider to achieve an accurate hit to the specified frequencies.
  • Low Precision - The mode does not accurately hit the specified frequencies. In this mode ATT will not calculate the divisor, but will use the standard value. Usually, in this mode, the frequency step will be equal to 6.75 Mhz

What is this Calculate button?

This button allows you to view how the ATT will calculate the divider for the given frequency. How can this be applied? When overclocking a video card, it is desirable that the divider is minimal. The smallest divisor gives the best stability. Using the Calculate button, you can always check which divider will be obtained at the desired frequency.

What divider is used when pressing the Set Default Clocks button

When setting the default values, ATT always uses the standard divider for the video card. Regardless of which overclocking mode was chosen for you.

What 3D API is used in 3D Renderer

ATT uses OpenGL for rendering 3D scenes and HLSL for shaders. Shaders require support for Pixel Shaders 2.0. Although the shaders themselves do not use all the PS 2.0 features, ATI's OpenGL driver has its limitations on the use of some OpenGL extensions. Which are activated only if there is hardware support for PS 2.0. When launched on cards without PS 2.0 support. ATT will render a different scene using transparency and Environment Mapping technology.

What's the best way to use artifact tester?

There are several ways to find the most stable video card frequencies. But unfortunately there is no ideal among them and it is unlikely that it ever will be. I can recommend the following steps:

  1. We reset the frequencies to the default frequency (Set default clocks).
  2. Launch 3D Renderer.
  3. We are waiting for about five minutes, let the card warm up properly.
  4. We start the search for maximum GPU frequencies. We remember the result obtained.
  5. Reset frequencies to default frequencies again.
  6. We start the search for the maximum frequencies for memory. We memorize the received frequencies.
  7. We subtract 2-5 MHz from the frequencies obtained and you can start testing in games and all your favorite 3DMark packages.

What video cards are supported by ATT for cooler RPM control?

ATT supports rotation control on video cards equipped with LM63 sensors, as well as video cards from ASUS equipped with FinTEK sensors. Video cards equipped with WinBond sensor (from Gigabyte) are not supported yet.

Game Profiles

How to create a game profile

Go to the Game Profiles-> Manage Profiles menu. Click on the New button. Next, you need to specify the executable file from the game. To do this, click the button to the right of the Executable field. Find the file from the game in the explorer (for example, HL2.EXE) and click OK. Next, enter a name for the profile. Try not to use the following letters in the profile name ‘/’ ‘\’ ‘?’ ‘|’ ‘” ‘‘ * ’‘<‘ ‘>’‘: ’So they will be replaced with an underscore when writing. Next, choose which 3D profile to load for the game. In the list, you can also set individual 3D settings for this game, for this, select Custom Settings from the list of profiles and click on the button to the right of the profile selection. On the Hardware tab, you can specify which overclocking profile to activate for this game. If you have Auto 2d / 3d Overclocking enabled, you can specify Use Auto 2d / 3d. If you choose Take no action, ATT will not overclock the map even if this game requires 3D mode, and you have the Auto 2d / 3d option activated. To correct the color scheme in the game, you can specify which color profile to use in the game by selecting it from the list of color profiles and ticking the option Force to use color profile... In the Additional tab, you can configure additional options for the game, such as:

  • Exit from ATT after finish - Exit ATT after finishing the game.
  • Switch desktop resolution to - Change the desktop resolution before starting the game.
  • Disable OSD support - Disable the use of the OSD module for this game.
  • OSD X / Y Offset - Specify the offset for displaying OSD information on the X and Y coordinates.

Also available option for triple buffer forcing for games using Direct3D API 8 or 9.

Do I have to launch the game via the ATT menu or a shortcut created via Game Profiles for the settings I specified to apply?

No, this is not necessary at all. ATT has a unique system for automatically detecting a running application, in which all settings for a running game are applied automatically. You are free to launch the game from anywhere. The only rule is that the executable file for the game must be located in the directory specified in the game profile.

What does the Delete outdated game profiles button do?

This button will help you get rid of old game profiles. When you click on it, ATT will scan the list of game profiles and collect a list of those profiles for which the executable.exe file is missing. And then it will ask for confirmation of deleting the found non-existing games from the general list of game profiles.

Why on my computer can I choose only one 3D profile for the game, while my friend has two options for Direct3D and OpenGL?

ATT can function in two modes. Standard if you have Catalyst Control Panel installed and in CCC mode if you have Catalyst Control Center installed. In the latter mode, all settings for 3D graphics are brought together in one window and, accordingly, you can select only one game profile.

Do I need to create a shortcut for the game via the Create Desktop Shortcut button?

There is no need for this. ATT has a built-in option for automatically detecting a running application, in which you can launch the game from anywhere and in any way convenient for you. When it detects the launch of a game that is registered in game profiles, ATT will automatically apply all the necessary settings and will wait for the end of the game to return the settings to the previous values if you explicitly indicated this by checking the Restore previous settings after game end option.

I force the game to use a color profile, but the result is not visible. What is the problem?

Many games use a launcher. An example of this is Half-Life2, which is often launched via Steam.exe although the game itself is hl2.exe. If the color forcing option does not work for you, then you have not correctly specified the executable file for the game.

I indicated Auto 2d / 3d in the overclocking options for the game, but the card does not overclock when starting the game!

If you specify to use Auro 2d / 3d overclocking in the game profile options, then the Auto 2d / 3d system itself must also be activated, otherwise ATT will not be able to overclock the card for this game. With the auto 2d / 3d module disabled, it is recommended to select a ready-made overclocking profile.

What does triple buffering forcing do?

If you do not enable Vsync, then you do not need this option. However, if you turn on Vsync then the number of frames in the game will be limited to the frequency of the sweep, or its half, or half of the half, and so on. That is, with Vsync = 60 Hz, your FPS will be either 60 or 30 or 15. This is how the rendering system works with the expectation of the return path of the ray. To avoid this, a third buffer is used, you can call it a spare. When you enable triple buffering forcing, you will not have more FPS failures, since if the card did not have time to draw the frame, then the next frame will not be lost, but will be drawn to the same third buffer. You can find more detailed information on the Internet.

OSD. What it is?

ATT has a unique OnScreen Display system that allows many parameters to be displayed directly in the game scene of the game itself.

Basic settings allow you to enable or disable the OSD completely, as well as prohibit the display of OSD information when playing video files. Adjustment of the screen angle for displaying OSD information, as well as an option to temporarily disable information display. OSD consists of two modules.

  1. FPS Meter- the module shows the speed of drawing in frames per second. It is possible to choose how the number of rendered frames will be calculated.
    • Continuous- rendering instant FPS, this mode does not display how many frames per second were actually drawn, but shows how many frames per second would have been drawn if each subsequent frame was completely identical to the current one.
    • Every second- In this mode, the actual number of frames drawn in the past second is displayed.
  2. FlashOSD- this information module allows you to display information about the current frequencies of the card, temperatures, the number of free video and texture memory, and also allows you to connect external OSD plugins to display any information. ATT includes the OSD Motherboard Sensors plug-in, which allows you to read and display information from popular diagnostic programs such as Motherboard Monitor, SpeedFan, PC Probe. FlashOSD has several display options:
    • Auto flash- withdrawal will be performed every X minutes for XX seconds.
    • Show all time- the withdrawal is ongoing.
    • Manual- output only by hotkey.

I turned on the display of all FlashOSD options and now my games slow down!

This is to be expected :). FlashOSD is a very heavy module for rendering, and therefore I strongly do not recommend including it for permanent display! This module practically does not lend itself to optimization, since the introduction of someone else's program into the drawing can lead to unpredictable results! At the moment, ATT uses the safest of all drawing methods, first used in the FRAPS program, but also the most time consuming for a video card. When displaying FPS, there is practically no load, since, for example, when displaying 8888, only 20 rectangles will be displayed (if standard fonts are used to display FPS). When drawing, FlashOSD increases the number of drawn rectangles several times!

How can I offset the position of the FPS counter?

There is no global setting for changing the default position of the FPS counter and FlashOSD text information, but you can do this for a specific game by creating a game profile for it and specifying an offset along the X and Y axes. Note that Direct3D uses the origin from the upper left corner of the screen. and OpenGL from the bottom left.

Direct3D settings

I don't know at all what the settings are in Direct3D. What should I do?

Most of the settings in Direct3D are the same as those of the Control Panel. There is no need to describe everything, as on any site you can find a large amount of information. Use search.

Explain about the effect of additional Direct3D settings.

Additional settings include, for example, anisotropic and trilinear filtering optimization. In general terms, these optimizations result in performance gains with little loss in quality. I cannot tell you what exactly happens when these options are enabled, since these optimizations are not described anywhere.

I heard that Frame Threshold for TAA does not work on newer versions of Catalyst. Is it true?

READ ALSO: How to set up ez cd audio converter correctly

No that's not true. Frame Threshold acts now and apparently will always act. Its main purpose is to indicate the FPS threshold from which Temporal AA is activated. The default is 60 FPS.

Explain the action of Catalyst A.I.

As well as optimizations for anisotropic and trilinear filtering, the Catalyst A.I. is not described anywhere. The main action of this option is optimization for a specific application. Catalyst identifies a running application by the name of the executable file and performs certain "manipulations" to increase performance.

Why doesn't Refresh Override always work?

This option only allows you to do the same thing that can be done through the dxdiag.exe program. Catalyst drivers do not have a built-in option for vertical control. ATI Tray Tools has a more powerful system - Refresh Lock. That will always work.

Flip Queue Size. What is this option?

This option is similar to the option in the nVIDIA drivers - Prerender limit. Sometimes it allows you to get rid of lags when vertical sync is enabled.

Explain with examples how the Anisotropic Filtering and Antialiasing options work.

Anisotropic Filtering- Anisotropic filtering, in simple words, allows you to improve the quality of the picture in distant parts of the scene. Here are two screenshots with anisotropic filtering off and on.

Antialiasing- Anti-aliasing. Allows you to get rid of the "ladder" effect on the edges of polygons. Here are screenshots. The first with anti-aliasing turned off, the second with anti-aliasing turned on (6x level).

ATI Tray Tools: a good replacement for RivaTuner

Once launched, the program hides in the system tray and provides convenient access to its functions using the drop-down menu. With its help, you can change the frequency of the chip and memory, adjust the frame rate of the screen, control the screen parameters and much more. An undoubted advantage is the ability to create settings profiles for specific applications and issue full reports on AGP, PCI slots and your video card. All settings are grouped into separate items, of which there are 16 pieces.

Main menu of the program

Since ATT is more aimed at users who know what they want to get, it often contains abbreviations and concepts that are inaccessible to a common user.

Let's dwell on the main settings, which need to be explained.

  • General- basic parameters of user profiles, contains the following items:
    • Profile Name- profile name;
    • Executable- selection of the exe-file for which the profile is created;
    • Parameters- command line parameters are set here;
    • Direct3DOpenGL- in these fields you can select the Direct3DOpenGL profile that will be installed when the specified application is launched;
    • Delete outdated game profiles- deletes the selected profiles;
    • Create desktop shortcut- makes a shortcut for a given profile.
  • Hardware - selection of frequency settings for specific applications:
    • Before- setting frequencies before starting the application;
    • After- setting frequencies after starting the application;
    • Take no action- the frequencies of the video card do not change;
    • Manual Overclocking- upload your own overclocking profile;
    • Use Auto 2D / 3D- automatic frequency detection for 2D / 3D applications;
    • Force to use Color Profile- force the selected color profile in the application.
  • Additional - additional profile settings:
    • Exit from ATT after finish- unloads ATT after the profile is finished;
    • Switch desktop resolution to - the selected screen resolution is set before starting the profile;
    • Disable OSD support- includes OSD support;
    • Use custom FPS color- includes the ability to choose the display color of the FPS.
    • Direct3D - setting up a video card for Direct3D applications. Includes 13 items:

      Antialiasing - a way of processing pixels, in which the edges of objects become much sharper, the "ladder effect" disappears. It can take the values 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x and Application Controlled. With increasing values, the picture improves, but the load on the video card increases, and, accordingly, performance decreases. When set to Application Controlled, applications themselves control the launch of Antialiasing mode;

      Anisotropic Filtering - a method for filtering textures that makes textures overlaid on polygons at an angle to the screen more crisp. It can take the values 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x and Application Controlled. As the values increase, the picture improves, but the processing speed of the 3D scene decreases. When set to Application Controlled, applications themselves control the launch of Anisotropic Filtering. You can also select the type of anisotropic filtering optimization (Performance, Quality and Quality with Full Trilinear);

      Texture preference- choice of texture preference level. Accepts the values High Performance, Performance, Quality, High Quality;

      MipMap Detail Level - this setting improves image quality by using textures of different resolutions for different objects in the same image, depending on their size. When you delete an object in a 3D scene, textures are loaded with low resolutions, and when zooming in, textures are loaded with high ones. MipMap Detail Level accepts the following values High Performance, Performance, Quality, High Quality.

      Wait for Vertical Sync - when enabled, the number of frames per second will not exceed the frame rate of the screen. Accepts the values Always On (always on), Always Off (always off) and Application Preference (selected by the application);

      TRUFORM- allows you to enable the use of higher-order surface geometry to create more detailed and realistic surfaces and characters in applications that support TRUFORM. Accepts the values Always Off (always off) and Application Preference (selected by the application);

      Refresh Rate Override - allows you to select a specific frequency for all Direct3D applications. Accepts the values Disabled (disabled), Same As Desktop (desktop frequency) and Custom (allows you to choose the frequency yourself);

      Flip Queue Size - allows you to set the number of frames that will be rendered in front of the buffer. As needed, the processed frames will be displayed on the screen. It can help in cases where the FPS "jumps". That is, for example, the game gives out 50 frames, and at the moment of the explosion they fall for a fraction of a second to 25. So that there is no jerk, the video card calculates the frames with the explosion in advance, which allows you to minimize the drop in FPS. Accepts the values 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and Undefined (undefined);

      Alternate pixel centers- allows you to get rid of problems with unreadable fonts in some applications;

      Support DXT Textures - includes support for DXT (compressed) textures;

      Support Bump Mapping- includes support for bump mapping. This technology gives additional detail and volume to objects without changing their geometric dimensions, due to normal maps.

      Optimizations - filter optimization:

      Enable Anisotropic Filtering Optimization- enable optimization of anisotropic filtering;

      Enable Trilinear Filtering Optimization- enable trilayer filtering optimization.

      Catalyst A.I. - for every CATALYST A.I. selects the most appropriate rendering mode. Three modes are available: Off, Low, High;

      Settings - all of the above settings are collected here.

      Direct3D Profiles- selection of Direct3D profiles. There are three profile values:

      Auto Balanced

      Max Speed - maximum speed.

      ATI Tray Tools Vs RivaTuner

      The first thing that catches your eye when launching these programs is a much more convenient and intuitive interface for ATI Tray Tools. All the necessary settings are grouped by subject and can be called up with a few clicks of the mouse buttons. Another big plus of ATT is the richness of settings compared to RivaTuner. The program allows you to increase the core and memory frequencies and check on the fly whether artifacts have appeared during overclocking (for this purpose, the built-in Artifact tester is used). It is possible to change the memory timings, as well as fine-tune the fan speed depending on the temperature.

      The undoubted advantage of ATT is the creation of profiles. You can fine-tune your graphics card for each application. With all this, RivaTuner looks very dull, although it also has small advantages: changing settings from the registry, displaying a complete list of drivers, compatibility with ATI and NVIDIA video cards (this is perhaps the biggest plus). ATI Tray Tools developers often update their product and add support for new ATI solutions.

      A little about overclocking

      First you need to decide for yourself: do you need overclocking? If you have a Hi-End video card at home, then there is no particular point in overclocking it. The manufacturer has squeezed all the juices out of it, and there are not so many gaming applications that use the full power of the most modern graphics chips, but rather just a few.

      It's another matter if you have a video card of the lower or middle price range (for example, the Radeon 9600-9800-X700 series). It is the younger models that the manufacturer specifically cuts in speed and functionality to reduce their cost. Let's briefly describe the method of overclocking a video card using ATI TrayTools.

      When overclocking a video card, we have three ways: either use an increase in the frequency of the chip, or increase the frequency of the memory, or both together. Which component makes the most sense to overclock depends on the specific video card. Some models suffer from a lack of memory bandwidth. It is with them that it is necessary to increase the memory frequency, but we must remember that it is impossible to raise it indefinitely, because the microcircuits have a threshold for frequency characteristics, and also the peculiarities of the board layout should be taken into account.

      The worst enemy of overclocking is overheating, so a good fan should be installed in advance if you want to run the card all the way. It is advisable to know the manufacturer of your memory. According to statistics, Samsung memory is less resistant to overclocking than Hyundai / Hynix, Ascend or Micron. Brands like EliteMT and EtronTech do even better overclocking.

      For some cards, overclocking the chip will be more profitable, although here the frequency is limited by technological norms or by intense heating.

      In order to start overclocking, you need to open the item Hardware-> Overclocking Settings... Then you need to set the frequency generation method: Low precision or High precision. We advise you to choose the latter, since when you press the button Calculate the best divisor for your video card is calculated, which will be used in High precision method.

      Next, we see two sliders that are responsible for the frequency of the chip and memory. Here comes the most crucial moment - adjusting the frequencies at which your card will work stably. If you do not have sufficient experience in setting frequencies based on the memory marking and cooler configuration, then it is better to raise the frequencies by 15-20%.

      First, it is preferable to raise the chip frequency, and then the memory frequency. Be sure to run the built-in test after each boost to detect artifacts when the frequency limit is reached. When bright points or other artifacts appear on the screen, you must quickly return all values to their original values in order to avoid freezing the computer (button Set Default Clocks). It is also recommended to test the overclocked system on gaming applications or synthetic benchmarks such as 3DMark20032005 (2006).

      This will take a lot of time, since artifacts may not manifest themselves even after 20-30 minutes. To quickly find them, you can use the GLMark benchmark. It takes him 4-5 minutes to identify bugs. If no artifacts are noticed on the screen, then increase the frequency again and run the tests again until you find the maximum overclocking parameters. When you have already overclocked the card to the maximum values, then your settings must be saved under one profile, and set it in the Load Selected Profile At Startup line.

      In conclusion, we can say that if you need a small program to overclock, configure and monitor your video card, then ATI Tray Tools is undoubtedly your choice.

      Graphics Card Settings for Battlefield 3

      ATI Tray tools, this is a utility for tuning the performance of video cards of the Radeon family, with its help we will increase this value.

      Since not everyone is able to buy a video card such as Crossfire ATi HD6970, for playing Battlefield 3, we will customize what we have.

      Consider advanced ATI Tray tools settings, with the main ones, I think, it's easy to figure it out.

      Let's see what we can do to increase the FPS in game mode.

      Frames Per Second (FPS) is the number of frames per second on the monitor screen, issued by the video card and computer.

      The higher this value, the less freezes in the game, naturally and the enemy will be destroyed with ease and pleasure.

      We will consider settings to improve performance to the detriment of the beauty of the picture.

      Triple Buffering needed if you use VSync in games. When you put VSync in a game, you will get better picture quality due to the removal of "image tearing", but your FPS also drops sometimes up to 50% due to the expectations of the graphics card, which needs to sync the picture before displaying it on your monitor ... Triple buffering allows you not to lose FPS when VSync is turned on, but it is only available in OpenGl. To enable triple buffering in Direct3D games, you can use the RivaTuner program

      Flip Queue Size determines the number of frames, which is calculated in advance. This option can prevent sudden drops in FPS. In different games, different values are optimal. In most cases, it is recommended to set the value to 2. If you have a multi-core processor, then setting the value to 0 may degrade performance.

      Anisotropic / Trilinear Filtering Optimizations... When enabled, the speed will increase (if you have a good video, the anisotropy will be given almost for free), you will most likely not notice the loss of picture quality.

      Adaptive anti-aliasing- allows you to apply anti-aliasing not to the whole picture, but only to the edges of objects. As a result, it looks almost like full-fledged anti-aliasing, and the performance is higher.

      High quality anisotropic filtering available on vidyuhs of the X1000 family and above, noticeably improves the quality of anisotropic, but you have to pay with a decrease in FPS

      Setting texture quality and MipMap level of detail- well, this is understandable, the higher the quality, the lower the FPS

      VSync (vertical sync)- I recommend setting Always Off

      DXT compression support- Lossless texture compression to save video memory bandwidth, must be enabled.

      Geometry Instancing- acceleration of "geometric" calculations. It is necessary to include in most cases, except for very old vidyuyu.

      Catalyst AI- includes driver optimization for a specific game. If this value is set to “High”, the picture quality may be degraded. I recommend Low.

      LOD (Level of Detail) textures... Higher is worse. Setting high values will raise the FPS, but it will become IMPOSSIBLE to play. Experiment with values between -1 and 1.

      One required parameter is hidden in the Overclocking and card management / Basic settings section. It is called PCI Latency... PCI Latency is the latency of a specific AGP or PCI device to access the main system bus. To activate it, you need to check the "Apply settings at startup" box. This option applies to AGP video cards, not PCI 🙂 and PCI-Express. As the option decreases, your average FPS may decrease, but the minimum will increase and the game will run more smoothly. A value of 128 is recommended, but you can choose the optimal value for your video card yourself.

      Important settings are also found in the Settings / Standard settings menu.

      Shader version- this is needed to emulate a video card with lower shaders. For example, your vidyuha supports 3.0, but in order to increase performance, you can set it to 2.0, then the card will be spared from the calculations of third shaders and the FPS will rise. But keep in mind, many games require a certain version of shaders to be supported, and if you emulate an older version, you will not be able to play those games.

      Optimizing shader code- be sure to enable this, as it will speed up the processing of shaders of any version.

      Forcing a MipMap filter- in some games it can improve the quality of textures for free, and somewhere, on the contrary, worsen.

      Compression mode Z- Adjusts the compression of textures passing through the Z-Buffer. Setting a higher value can improve speed, but lead to picture distortions (although I have never noticed any distortions, only artifacts from overclocking :))

      Fast z clear- this option must be enabled, it is responsible for quickly clearing the Z-buffer.

      Z Mask- prevents Z-Buffer from being filled with optional information. Sounds good, but many games work better with this option disabled.

      Z Top Disable- it is not clear what this function does, but it is disabled by default.

      VPU Recover- allows you to reset the frequencies of vidyuhi to default when overclocking, in fact, this function is useless, disable it.

      Disable DMA Copy- activating this option may result in decreased performance.

      Disable Block Write- In some cases, disabling this option can raise the FPS, but still I do not recommend touching it.

      WMV Acceleration- allows the video card to process WMV video, offloading the processor. I recommend enabling this option.

      Now let's head to Settings / Advanced Settings / Advanced Direct3D Tweaks. These settings work in DirectX games, but not in OpenGl. Pay attention to the following parameters.

      Fast Color Clear- enabling this option will increase performance without losing quality

      VoltxEnable- support for volumetric textures, must be enabled.

      Color Compression- compression of information to save video memory without loss of quality. You need to turn it on.

      Export MipMap Cube Maps- Enabling this should provide support for Mipmap textures on Cubic Maps. Cubic Maps are used to show reflections of the environment on static surfaces with minimal loss of performance. This option should be enabled by default, but you can enable it here to make sure it works :).

      Line AA Enable- Turns on anti-aliasing for "line-like" objects (all kinds of power lines, laser beams). At the cost of some performance penalty, you can make these objects less jagged.

      Enable Raster Guardband- This is an element of the Hardware T&L Guard Band Clipping technology, which allows you to remove invisible objects from 3D maps. This option should be enabled by default, but you can enable it here to make sure it works.

      Force Compressed Stencil Buffer- Enables stencil shadow buffer compression. By activating the option, you will receive an increase in FPS, but in some games some artifacts may appear.

      Support for Non power of two size textures- support for textures of non-standard size, this must be enabled

      Support for Displacement Maps- Displacement Maps are used in new games, so the option must be enabled.

      Adaptive NPatch Support- Npatch is a technology developed by ATi that allows you to get more realistic curved surfaces without unnecessary waste of polygons, and therefore, without loss of FPS. I recommend enabling this, as NPatch is used in mega games like Oblivion and NWN2.

      Tiling Settings Are parameters for controlling the surfaces of objects. Include all parameters from this group, as they can be used in some games to raise the picture or performance.

      Now take a look at Advanced OGL Tweaks, this only works in OpenGl games.

      DitherAlpha- If enabled, the color transitions will be smoother. If disabled, the speed will increase, but the color gradation will be more noticeable.

      Export OpenGL 2.0 Procedures- Provides support for OpenGL 2.0, must be enabled.

      Basic settings for NVIDEA family vidyuhi using another program Riva tuner are similar to those considered, but there are some differences. You can access the settings at: Driver Settings / Direct3D Settings / or OpenGL. I think you can easily figure it out, just pay attention to some of the differences.

      Mipmapping tab. Here you can disable negative UD in order to raise the quality of the picture in the AF mode.

      LMA tab. "Z-buffer compression" should be enabled to slightly increase the speed without losing quality.

      On the "Vertical Synchronization" tab, you can, firstly, disable VSync, and secondly, raise the pre-rendering limit to 2 - 3.

      On the Textures tab, everything can be left unchanged, except for the level of anisotropic filtering, which can be set to 16 if you have a good modern video card.

      The Smoothing tab contains the Transparent smoothing option, that is, smoothing transparent textures. I recommend putting "Multisampling" here. Now, in the anti-aliasing mode, the improvement in image quality will be clearly visible, this will not affect performance much.

      If this does not seem enough for you and you feel like an advanced user, you can try to overclock the frequency of your video card.

      Overclocking is the best way to boost your graphics card performance! You can learn about this in detail on Over, but I will write the most basic here. As an example, consider overclocking with ATI Tray Tools... So here's a step-by-step guide for a thoughtful user:

      1. Install ATI Tray Tools.

      2. Go to the Overclocking settings window.

      3. Press the button "Show 3D window". We admire the picture for about five minutes, not forgetting to monitor the temperature of the GPU (core). If it goes over 80, then you can forget about overclocking until you change the cooling system. If the temperature is acceptable, then we continue.

      4. Select the 3D frequency change if your card has separate frequencies.

      5. Before you two sliders - the frequency of the core and memory. Both of these frequencies affect the performance of the card.

      6. With the help of a child's counter, we choose which frequency to raise first (core or memory).

      7. Raise the frequency by 10 percent at once. Do not be afraid, the vidyuha will not burn out, in extreme cases it will hang, which is treated with the magic Reset button. Click "Apply".

      8. Press the button "Show 3D window", and then the button "Scan for Artifacts". We are waiting for 10 minutes, all this time there should be no artifacts! If the counter does not reach 10 minutes and resets after finding artifacts, slightly lower the frequency and go through the check again.

      9. If the test is successful, we increase the frequency in 5-10 MHz steps, after each increase we pass the test, thus we find the maximum possible frequency, at which we stop.

      10. Repeat steps 7 - 9 for the second component.

      11. Everything, vidyuha is overclocked, press OK and start some demanding game. We play for two hours, all this time there should be no artifacts (if you do not know what it is, artifacts are various black stripes on the screen, white dots, flickering textures and other anomalies), otherwise we reduce the frequencies.

      12. If step 12 is successful, then go back to the overclocking menu, click on the "Profile record" button, save the profile under some name. We put a checkmark in front of the items "Load profile with ATT" and "Restore after sleep mode".

      13. Check in Utilities and settings / Basic program settings if ATI Tray Tools autostart is worth it. If not, check the "boot from Windows" checkbox.

      Everything! Your graphics card is overclocked, enjoy the increased performance!

      Is there anything similar for overclocking a video card from nvidia (9600gt) or is this program suitable for it too?

      Hello, can you write a guide for Nvidia tray tools? I think it would be useful to many.

      There is no such program for Nvidia tray tools, for NVIDEA Riva Tuner http://radeon.ru/rivatuner/

      I have plans to buy a GeForce GTX 570, then I will conduct experiments and will definitely post the results.

      I apologize for my questions, but there is no Riva Tuner guide anywhere?

    RivaTuner "Overclocking" tab.

    There is an effective solution for overclocking video cards: RivaTuner. This feature-rich application is not limited to Nvidia graphics cards; it can also be used to overclock AMD graphics cards. (If you remember, the first Nvidia accelerators were called Riva. You can read about the history of Nvidia video cards in the article " The history of nVidia in graphics cards: 13 years of success ".

    Dosed acceleration

    RivaTuner allows you to overclock the system without any frequency limits (in any case, you can go much further than AMD and Nvidia would like when using the interface for overclocking in their own drivers), and can also desynchronize certain frequencies. An interesting feature of RivaTuner is that it can change the frequency of shader units regardless of the GPU, while other programs can only act in accordance with the GPU (the frequency of shader units is set relative to the GPU frequency).

    You can download the RivaTuner utility. By the way, it was this utility that we used to adjust the fan speed for video cards of the 4800 family before the Catalyst 8.10 driver appeared.

    PowerStrip cannot overclock the GMA 950.

    One of the oldest overclocking programs is PowerStrip. This utility for managing PC graphics options has been helping to overclock video cards for many years and is quite mature. Its only drawback is that it is not free, unlike other programs that we have talked about. However, PowerStrip can be used for more than just overclocking.

    A program that is worth the money

    The big advantage of PowerStrip is that it works with most video cards on the market, not just models from AMD and Nvidia. It can be launched from the Windows taskbar, which means that you can set the necessary parameters faster than through the drivers. In addition, PowerStrip can adjust many display parameters such as refresh rate, and more interestingly, output resolution: a must-have option for some HDTV users.

    The PowerStrip program can be found.

    ATI Tray Tools and ATITool are two different programs

    The following two utilities have very similar names, but in reality they are completely different. ATI Tray Tools only supports AMD graphics cards, and ATITool (despite the seemingly self-explanatory name) works with both AMD and Nvidia models.

    ATITool and its test image.

    This overclocking program is compatible with all Nvidia and AMD video cards and is of interest for at least one reason: it has 3D animation rendering, which loads the graphics core of the video card and allows you to check if the overclocking settings work by detecting artifacts. It also has a function to determine the maximum frequency that the GPU can accept (similar to the Auto-Tune function of the Catalyst driver).

    The latest version of ATITool can be downloaded.

    ATI Tray Tools for AMD only

    ATI Tray Tools. Click on the picture to enlarge.

    This little program sits in the system tray (hence the name) and helps tune AMD (formerly ATI) graphics cards. ATI Tray Tools has one small problem: its function for determining the maximum frequencies is too optimistic, which leads to crashes. Like some other applications, this utility is capable of storing profiles that can be loaded in accordance with a particular program, for example, a profile for games, a profile for office applications, etc.

    Updated versions of the ATI Tray Tools are located.
