Radeon HD 5830: Closing the Gaps

"What?" - some of our readers will surely exclaim. "Another Radeon HD 5000 graphics card from AMD?" Yes, that's right. In fact, the company even introduced two video cards: Radeon HD 5830 which we are testing in this article, and the Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition, which will be released in March. And we will present tests of this video card with support for six displays a little later. Graphics cards based on Nvidia's GF100 are still out of the market, and the brand new Radeon HD 5830 should provide a price / performance ratio between Radeon HD 5770 and Radeon HD 5850 .

In general, February 2010 can be called the month of announcements for video cards of the Radeon 5000 line, since in 28 days it is already the third video card. By the way, she is also the most interesting of the three. Anyway, if you even missed the reviews Radeon HD 5450 and Radeon HD 5570 These discrete graphics cards are entry-level models. This announcement is aimed at those users who are ready to spend a little more on a video card, but still are not ready to shell out more than $ 300 for the company's high-end model.

As you can see, until today, between Radeon HD 5770 for $ 160 () and Radeon HD 5850 for $ 310 () there was a big gap. Indeed, we got a noticeable gap of more than $ 150, given that AMD's lineup of the previous generation ends after the Radeon HD 4890, and nVidia could only compete in the $ 200 segment with a GeForce GTX 260 graphics card or $ 350 more expensive with a 285 model. market. The Radeon HD 4890 video cards at their prime cost about $ 200 on the international market, but today they cannot be found at that price. And the availability of the Radeon HD 4890 has been getting worse in recent months.

Of course, AMD didn't like this situation very much, so it introduced the Radeon HD 5830 graphics card to fill the gap. The MSRP at the time of the announcement is $ 239, which looks promising, but it is unlikely that we will get such a price in retail, which has already been seen from the announcements. Radeon HD 5850 and 5870. Since the novelty Radeon HD 5830 is based on the same high-end GPU Cypress as its high-end predecessor, we had very ambitious hopes for a new model. However, let's see what this video card will give for its money, which at first glance seems to be perfectly balanced.

Radeon HD 5830 Architecture

There are many AMD graphics cards on the market today, so let's take a look at the specs of the models surrounding the new Radeon HD 5830 by price.

Radeon HD 5850 Radeon HD 5830 Radeon HD 5770 Radeon HD 4890
Stream Processors 1440 1120 800 800
Texture blocks 72 56 40 40
Raster Operation Blocks (ROPs) 32 16 16 16
Core frequency 725 MHz 800 MHz 850 MHz 850 MHz
GDDR5 memory frequency 1000 MHz 1000 MHz 1200 MHz 975 MHz
Memory bus 256 bit 256 bit 128 bit 256 bit
Memory Bandwidth (GB / s) 128 128 76,8 124,8
Computing Power (TFLOPs) 2,09 1,79 1,36 1,6
Number of transistors (billion) 2,15 2,15 1,04 0,959
Maximum power consumption 151 watts 175 watts 108 watts 190 watts
Idle power consumption 27 watts 25 watts 18 watts 60 watts

There is not much information to think about in the table. At first glance, the new Radeon HD 5830 should completely bypass Radeon HD 5770 thanks to much higher memory bandwidth and almost a third more stream cores. Indeed, the new video card seems to be comparable to the powerful Radeon HD 5850... Yes, we got a 22% decrease in the number of streaming cores, but then we have a 10% increase in the GPU clock speed, which helps to compensate for the deficit.

Everything looks good for a new Radeon HD 5830 until you discover the Achilles' heel of this model: Note the dramatic reduction in ROP units compared to Radeon HD 5850... And we thought we were getting close to the performance level of the $ 240 Radeon HD 5850! Of course, this is why AMD has cut the number of renderers on the back of the pipeline in half compared to the Radeon HD 5870 and 5850.

What will it give in practice? Video card Radeon HD 5830 can perform shader operations almost as fast as Radeon HD 5850 but the ability to render pixels to the screen has been stripped down to Radeon HD 5770... We can assume that the new Radeon HD 5830 will run between the Radeon HD 5770 and 5850, but it will likely be closer to the 5770 or Radeon HD 4890.

Test configuration

When choosing graphics cards to test against a new one Radeon HD 5830, we looked at solutions in a similar price range. The closest graphics cards were the Radeon HD 4890 and GeForce GTX 275, with both models being degraded today. We had a sample of the Radeon HD 4890 in our hands, but couldn't find a GeForce GTX 275 in retail. But we add the GeForce GTX 260, which can also be considered quite an interesting alternative, since it can be found at prices ranging from $ 200 to $ 220 on the international market ().

In this case, none of the tested video cards were overclocked at the factory. All video cards ran at reference clock speeds.

Test results

3DMark prepares us for disappointments. 3DMark uses shaders heavily, so the ROP limit will play a more significant role in real tests, and the performance should be closer to that of the Radeon HD 4890.

And our first gaming benchmark shows nearly identical performance levels between the Radeon HD 5830 and the Radeon HD 4890, whose availability is getting worse. The surprise was that the 4890 video card even came out a little ahead. You see how the increased number of ROPs in Radeon HD 5850 makes this video card a leader?

Of course, we would be very interested to see how the upcoming DirectX 11 games will change the balance of power. Aliens Vs. Predator, for example, is likely to be one of the candidates for running our tests in the future. It promises to provide hardware tessellation, and we would be very curious to know how it affects performance.

Left 4 Dead - Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering

Left 4 Dead does not load the video card that much, so it allowed us to evaluate the anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering performance of the tested video cards. Thanks to GDDR5 memory and a full 256-bit memory interface, we see that the new Radeon HD 5870 on which our reference graphics card is built. But under load, the new card still consumes less power.

To be honest, AMD specs say the opposite: it assumes that Radeon HD 5830 uses less energy when idle and more under load. We were also surprised that the Radeon HD 4890 consumed less power under load compared to the GeForce GTX 260 sample we had on hand. However, the Asus ENGTX260 Matrix is not built on a reference design, so we are not sure how much Asus' optimizations affected the result. But we expected the Radeon HD 4890 to draw more watts than the competing graphics card.

Notice how little power consumption is Radeon HD 5770 in this case, an impressive result for a video card that gives performance very close to that of the new Radeon HD 5830.

Difference between GPU temperature and room temperature.

All temperatures are within reasonable limits. It can only be noted that the new Radeon HD 5830 gives much less heat than other video cards, even if it has a reference cooler installed. Again, this is also quite logical, since the reference cooler was designed to cool a powerful Radeon HD 5870 under load. Also note that the Asus GeForce GTX 260 is equipped with a powerful third-party cooler, which allows it to operate at very low temperatures.

Radeon HD 5830 generates surprisingly low noise levels, probably because the reference fan Radeon HD 5870 does not spin at very high speeds to cool the GPU. In this case, the Radeon HD 5830 offers a significant advantage over the noticeably noisier Radeon HD 4890.

Conclusion

With the release of the video card Radeon HD 5830 AMD has filled the most noticeable gap in the DirectX 11 product range. The company introduced us to another powerful graphics card that replaced the Radeon HD 4890, which is gradually disappearing from sale.

Nearly identical gaming performance makes it easier to draw parallels between Radeon HD 5830 and Radeon HD 4890. The similarities do not end there, since the new video card was announced at a price close to HD 4890. Of course, over time (and hopefully, with competitors coming to the market), the Radeon HD 5830 will drop in price and provide the same performance / price ratio that we are used to with the Radeon HD 4890. Let's not forget that HD The 5830 doesn't just deliver gaming performance. When idle, it draws half the power of the Radeon HD 4890 and also provides all the benefits of the Radeon HD 5000 line that make new graphics cards so attractive. Of course, we mean the game on three Eyefinity monitors, support for transmitting high-resolution audio in encoded form to an external receiver (bitstream) via HDMI and support for DirectX 11. Among other things, the reference video card turned out to be significantly quieter in operation than the 4890, although this associated with trade-offs on large graphics card size.

What did we dislike the most about the new Radeon HD 5830? Well, the list price is $ 80 higher than the price level of most video cards. Radeon HD 5770 and only $ 60 less than many models Radeon HD 5850(on the international market, it is difficult to predict the prices of Radeon HD 5830 in Russia). Judging by the relative performance, the price of the new product should be closer to the Radeon HD 5770, since it works closer to this video card, and not to the HD 5850. Besides, we are used to the fact that the Radeon HD 4890 provides a decent level of performance for the price from $ 200 (), so spending extra money for the same level of performance is by no means impressive. However, as the Radeon HD 4890 video cards disappear from sale, such a comparison will no longer work.

Cost considerations aside, Radeon HD 5830- quite a decent performance graphics card, equipped with a universal set of functions, which we have seen in all models of the Radeon HD 5000. It is distinguished by quiet operation and moderate power consumption. It outperforms the Radeon HD 5770 in memory bandwidth, which is almost twice as high. In some scenarios, this gives a noticeable boost.

AMD is undoubtedly enjoying its monopoly on DirectX 11 graphics cards, but Nvidia hasn't hit back yet. Hopefully, the upcoming response to the Radeon 5000 line (which can be expected by the end of March) will add competition to this market as well as enrich the choices. Until then, AMD has an unbeatable range of graphics cards on hand.
ATI Radeon HD 5770 and HD 5750: New DirectX 11 Graphics Cards for the Mass Market ";

The video card Radeon HD 5830 has appeared in various reviews on our website more than once. This solution is less popular than the older Radeon HD 5850 and Radeon HD 5870, so there is no wide variety of video accelerators based on the cropped Cypress on the market. Although among the representatives of this series there are sometimes interesting products. For example, HIS HD 5830 iCooler V Turbo (H583FNT1GD), which we will consider in this article.

This video adapter is supplied in standard packaging for HIS products. The scope of delivery includes:
  • adapter DVI / D-Sub;
  • two power adapters 2molex / PCI-E;
  • CrossFire bridge;
  • CD with drivers;
  • instructions.
Note that there is also a version (H583FNT1GDG) with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 included.

HIS video cards of the iCooler family are equipped with a specially designed cooler. The products of this series have a cooling system made according to the classic design, and not the turbine type, as in the cards of the IceQ family. The top of the cooler is covered with a plastic casing with a glossy surface, which is protected by a sticker during transportation.

The adapter is equipped with the most efficient cooling system from the iCooler series under the V index, which is specially designed for video cards based on the RV870 graphics chip. By the way, simpler iCooler IV is installed only on the Radeon HD 5750 and other inexpensive video adapters. Moreover, this is actually nothing more than a standard cooler from Arctic Cooling, which is universally used in PowerColor, Club3D, VTX3D and others.

At first glance, it may seem that the cooler is similar to the cooling systems for the HIS HD 4870 iCooler x3 and HD 4890 iCooler x4 video cards. In fact, they are not related by anything except the shape of the casing. Whereas older models used heat pipes, the iCooler V does without them. Moreover, it becomes clear only when you completely disassemble the cooler, because it itself inspires respect with its weight and dimensions.

The design consists of a massive base with a copper insert and a radiator made of 46 thin aluminum fins. The aluminum part of the base contacts the memory chips through special thermal pads. The airflow is carried out by an 80-mm fan (blades - 75 mm), which seems tiny against the background of a large radiator.

You can estimate the dimensions of the radiator in comparison with the board by looking at the bottom photo.

Now, many manufacturers strive to use the maximum number of heat pipes, while the heatsink itself may not be very large. HIS engineers went the opposite way and maximized the heat dissipation area for light by increasing the volume of the radiator, but did without heat pipes. We will find out how effective this approach will be a little below.

A separate small radiator is installed on the transistors of the power system.

Let's take a look at the board itself. Some "budget" of the product is striking against the background of the older solutions of the HD 5800 series - the use of cheap chokes and simple field-effect transistors.

The four-phase GPU power system is based on the uP6213 controller using two uP6262 "drivers". Softvoltmod is not supported.

The RV870 graphics chip in the Radeon HD 5830 is cut by more than a third of its capabilities. Out of 1600 stream processors, only 1120 remain, texture units - 56, and rendering units - 16.

The memory chips used are Samsung K4G10325FE-HC04, designed for an effective frequency of 5 GHz.

The operating frequencies of the video card have been increased from the standard 800/4000 MHz to 840 MHz for the GPU and 4400 MHz for the GDDR5 memory. In idle, the frequencies are reduced to 157/1200 MHz.

Temperatures in game mode are quite modest. Under load with Ambush demo from Crysis Warhead Benchmarking Tool at maximum quality settings at 1920x1200 resolution with anti-aliasing, the core temperature did not exceed 66 ° C (at 27 ° C indoors).

In FurMark ("stability test" at 1680x1050 with post-effects enabled) the maximum temperature was 72 ° C.

For a factory overclocked video card, the temperature readings are excellent. As you can see, a cooler can cope with cooling the RV870 without heat pipes. But the fan's noise level is high even in gaming mode, when it spins up to 59% of the maximum, which is about 2970 rpm. And under FurMark load, the fan was already running at 3470 rpm. In such conditions, you can forget about acoustic comfort.

A massive radiator requires good airflow for efficient heat dissipation. In this case, due to the small diameter of the fan, with the long length of the entire structure, high revolutions are required to create a more powerful air flow. So it turns out that the potential of the cooler is not bad, but the maximum efficiency will be achieved at a high noise level. But, judging by the low temperatures, the cooler can cope with the cooling of the card even in a quieter mode. We decided to check this and fixed the speed at 40% (2000 rpm). In this mode, with the Crysis Warhead load, the core warmed up to 79 ° C.

Compared to the recently reviewed Sapphire HD 5830, the overclocking potential of the HIS HD 5830 iCooler V Turbo is slightly higher. But we failed to catch up with the frequencies of the very first copy of the Radeon HD 5830 that fell into our hands (from the same Sapphire, by the way). The maximum core frequency was 930 MHz, and the memory was overclocked to 5476 MHz.

The video card was able to operate stably at such frequencies only when the fan speed was increased. One of the possible reasons for this may be insufficient cooling of the VRM elements. In any case, you can forget about using more or less decent overclocking with a low noise level.

Test results

The advantage of the HIS HD 5830 iCooler V Turbo over the standard Radeon HD 5830 is just over four percent.

Crysis: Warhead

The difference between the two Radeon HD 5830s is 4.5%. This advantage allows the HIS graphics card to keep up with the GeForce GTX 460 in non-anti-aliasing modes.

Aliens vs. Predator

The graphics card was originally slated for February 5th, and we had to wait over three weeks before AMD finally rolled out the high-performance Radeon HD 5000 series graphics card based on the Cypress LE core. The reason for the delay is not completely clear and, as usual, a bunch of various rumors and theories are hovering around it.

Some people say that AMD is simply playing with (or even intimidating) Nvidia in behind-the-scenes games, others think that the problem is with late delivery of components for this product. On the one hand, Nvidia is difficult to intimidate more than it was intimidated by the already existing Radeon HD 5000 series, on the other hand AMD has never suffered from under-supply of components.

We think that the story is more prosaic - AMD could simply give time to partners so that they had time to prepare their versions of the video card. In this case, the company's partners have been given a large role in the distribution of the 5830, as a result of which today we see a lot of options for the Radeon HD 5830 video card on the market.

The launch of this video card turned out to be quite unusual. The video cards were launched in such a way that the consumer can buy “special edition” video cards immediately after their release. Instead of waiting several months for better cooler models to come out.

Be that as it may, improved coolers and modified PCB options are not the most remarkable thing for which the Radeon HD 5830 was born.AMD Radeon HD 5830 became the most affordable graphics card from the expensive Radeon HD 5800 series, this video card costs about 50 $ less than the existing Radeon HD 5850 product. Even though the Radeon HD 5830 is a stripped down version of the 5850, which in turn is a stripped down version of the 5870, it is still an impressive product.

In fact, the new Radeon HD 5830 and 5850 are quite similar to each other than we initially expected. Before the $ 135 price gap of the Radeon HD 5830 appeared, the gap between the Radeon HD 5770 and 5850 was filled with the previous generation, the Radeon HD 4890. At the moment, the Radeon HD 4890 is a thing of the past and stocks are sold out.

Moreover, the competitor's graphics card, the GeForce GTX 275, is a better solution than the Radeon HD 4890 at the same price point. And a person who wanted to buy a video card for $ 200 - $ 250 at that time had no other choice. But all this was a matter of time, with the Radeon HD 5000 series AMD can fill almost any niche, just to have time to develop models for the corresponding price categories.

At the $ 250 price point, the Radeon HD 5830 will easily beat both the GeForce GTX 275 and the Radeon HD 4890 in speed, and may also be able to compete with much more expensive solutions like the GeForce GTX 285. For AMD, the Radeon HD 5830 graphics card has become important strategic product, so we think it will live up to expectations ...

Appearance and capabilities

The first time we took the Radeon HD 5830 out of the box, it impressed us a little. As it should have been, a graphics card designed to fill the gap between the Radeon HD 5770 and 5850, both in terms of price and performance. The Radeon HD 5770 is 21 centimeters long, while the 5850 is already 24 centimeters long, and, finally, the 5870 has an impressive length - a whopping 28 centimeters!

We expected that the length of the 5830 video card would not exceed 24 centimeters mark, the length was expected to be about 22-23 centimeters. Anyway, when we took the Radeon HD 5830 out of the box and attached the ruler to it, it turned out that the video card is a whopping 28 centimeters long! The same as in the case of the top-end AMD 5870.

Moreover, the reference sample of the Radeon HD 5830 that was sent to us was otherwise very similar to the 5870 model. Most likely, AMD did not spend extra money on the motherboard design and simply copied it from the 5870 model, entrusting this responsible task to its partners-video card manufacturers. Although if you look at the Radeon HD 5830 made by Gigabyte, HIS, PowerColor or Sapphire, most of them are the same 28 centimeters long ...

In fact, we did not find an intelligible explanation for such a long length of the Radeon HD 5830 video card, despite the fact that the 5850 model is as much as 4 centimeters shorter. In theory, the Radeon HD 5830 consumes 16% less power than the 5850 under load.

We hope that manufacturers will present more or less compact 5830 models in the future. We must admit that this conclusion was not made from scratch - we have already seen the Radeon HD 5830 from XFX, which is only 17 cm long. Unfortunately, so far we have seen only photographs , the specifications of this product have not yet been confirmed. But if XFX manages to shorten the graphics card by 40%, it will be something.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves and return to our sample Radeon HD 5830, which we currently have. This sample is equipped with a fairly large aluminum radiator 13.5 cm long, 6.5 cm wide and 2.5 centimeters high, which has 36 fins. The radiator is connected to the base of the cooler by four copper pipes, which significantly increase the efficiency of heat removal. This radiator is blown by a 75 × 20 mm fan, which takes air from the case, blows it through the radiator and throws it out from the back wall of the system unit, through the video card holder.

As with the Radeon HD 5850, we found the Radeon HD 5830 to be a reasonably quiet graphics card when idle. When idling, the power consumption of the video card is only 27 watts. Be that as it may, when we start loading the video card, the fan increases the rotational speed and the card starts making a small noise comparable to the noise emitted by other high-end Radeon video cards, so we did not see anything unusual in this regard.

The chip of the new Radeon HD 5830 is built on the basis of a 40 nanometer technological process, which was first introduced by AMD in the Radeon HD 4770 video card. This process technology allows AMD to be a little aggressive in terms of core clock frequency, the GPU of the video card runs at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 video memory operates at an even more impressive frequency of 1000MHz. The configuration of the GPU also did not leave us indifferent - it is equipped with 1120 stream processors (SPU) along with 56 texture address units (TAU) and 16 raster operations units (ROP).

As we mentioned above, the consumption of the Radeon HD 5830 in idle mode is low, but under load the device can draw up to 175 watts. In order to provide guaranteed power to the graphics card, AMD installed a pair of 6-pin PCI Express power connectors. You will find exactly the same configuration in the old Radeon HD 4870 or 4890 or GeForce GTX 285 for example.

The Radeon HD 5830 also supports Crossfire technology, moreover, it is possible to use two Crossfire connectors to connect two or more video cards together. On the outside of the graphics card you will find a pair of DVI connectors, one HDMI and one Display Port. It is also worth mentioning that all Radeon HD 5830 video cards are able to support a maximum resolution of 2560 × 1600 on three monitors at the same time.

Based on 3Dmark Vantage, the Radeon HD 5830 is 12% faster than the GeForce GTX 285, which is clearly visible when tested at 2560x1600. The excellent result of this test is that the Radeon HD 5830, which scored 4848 points, is only 4% slower than the 5850. If we follow from the fact that the Radeon HD 5830 was intended to replace the Radeon HD 4890, occupying its price niche, then 37% the performance gain here is simply impressive.

Testing: Batman Arkham Asylum, Call of Duty

The performance shown in testing in Batman Arkham Asylum is not as impressive as it was in the case of testing in the 3Dmark Vantage synthetic benchmark suite. However, the Radeon HD 5830 is 9% faster than the 4890 here at 2560x1600. Meanwhile, it was only 5% slower than the GeForce GTX 275 and 12% slower than the GTX 285. Also, the Radeon HD 5830 was 14% slower than its big brother, the Radeon HD 5850.

In Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, the results were simply impressive, in this test the Radeon HD 5830 outperformed the 4890 by as much as 19%, and was only 5% slower than the GeForce GTX 285. Moreover, the Radeon HD 5830 lagged behind the 5850 by a relatively small percentage - by 6%, which means only 4 frames per second at 2560 × 1600 resolution - quite a bit when it comes to performance on the order of 60 frames per second.

Testing: Company of Heroes, Crysis Warhead

When tested in the Company of Heroes game (2560 × 1600), the Radeon HD 5830 in terms of performance showed the same results as the GeForce GTX 275. Also, the reviewed product in this case turned out to be 4% (or 2 frames per second) faster than the Radeon HD 4890. While the Radeon HD 5830 was 11% slower than the GeForce GTX 285, it was also 29% slower than the video card. Radeon HD 5850, in terms of frame rate, is a tangible 20 frames per second.

In the game Crysis Warhead at 2560 × 1600 the results for the reviewed product turned out to be completely unimpressive, the same can be said about other video cards. The Radeon HD 5830 performed similarly at all resolutions. In terms of performance, our HD 5830 video card matched the Radeon HD 4890 and GeForce GTX 275, and at the same time, at 2560 × 1600 it was slower than the GeForce GTX 285 and Radeon HD 5850 by only 2 frames per second.

Testing: Dawn of War, Far Cry 2

When tested in Dawn of War II, the Radeon HD 5830 performed much better than the previous generation Radeon HD 4800 series. At 2560 × 1600 we saw an average frame rate of 40fps, which allowed the Radeon HD 5830 to reach the performance level of the GeForce GTX 275, while it was only 7% slower than the GeForce GTX 285. Moreover, while the Radeon HD 5830 could be 17% slower than the 5850, it is as much as 25% faster than the Radeon HD 4890!

The frame rate in Far Cry 2 is very low, due to the huge resource intensity of the game (as in the case of Crysis Warhead). Please note that in this test we enabled 8x 8xAA anti-aliasing, which further reduced the performance of all video cards. The Radeon HD 5830 in this test stopped at just 36fps at 1680x1050 and 20fps at 2560x1600. This means that the Radeon HD 5830 is a whopping 29% slower than the Radeon HD 5850 and GeForce GTX 285.

Testing: Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X, Resident Evil 5

Before testing in the game Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. all graphic settings were turned to maximum, anti-aliasing (4xAA) was also enabled. Note that all Nvidia graphics cards were tested on DX10, while ATI cards were tested on DX10.1, otherwise all parameters were the same. As you can see, the Radeon HD 5830 in this test was noticeably slower than the Radeon HD 4890, and the reviewed product lost to an outdated video card for the first time.

It is also interesting that in this game the Radeon HD 4890 performed very well, beating even the 5850. The Radeon HD 5830 nevertheless caught up with the Radeon HD 4870 and GeForce GTX 285 video cards at 2560 × 1600 with a frame rate of 39fps, so the overall result was not bad.

For the second time, the Radeon HD 5830 lost out to the outdated HD 4890 in Resident Evil 5. With an average frame rate of 47fps at 2560 × 1600, the Radeon HD 5830 was only 4% faster than the Radeon HD 4870 and 2% slower than the GeForce GTX 285. while the reviewed product lagged behind the Radeon HD 5850 by as much as 20 percent.

Testing: Street Fighter IV, World in Conflict

In Street Fighter IV, the Radeon HD 5830 was 16% faster than the Radeon HD 4890 at 2560 × 1600, with an average rendering speed of 92 frames per second. At the same time, the reviewed video card turned out to be 17% slower than the older model Radeon HD 5850. It was interesting that the Nvidia GeForce video cards had to fight in this toy, and the struggle was not as successful as we would like. The rendering speed of the GeForce GTX 285 was only 61 frames per second.

World in Conflict was another game in which the Radeon HD 5830 lost out to its predecessor, the Radeon HD 4890, this time the difference was already noticeable - 11%, in this test the 5830 could only be compared in performance with the 4870 video card. The performance difference between the Radeon HD 5830 and 5850 at 2560x1600 have become quite large - 20% (not in favor of 5830).

Testing: Wolfenstein

Wolfenstein was launched with 8x antialiasing and 8x anisotropic filtering, as a result the frame rate of average performance cards dropped below 60 frames per second at 2560 × 1600. At a resolution of 1920 × 1200, however, the video card Radeon HD 5830 flashed an impressive 71 frames per second, which allowed it to catch up with the GeForce GTX 285. The Radeon HD 5830 was here 17% weaker than the Radeon HD 5850, although it beat the Radeon HD 4890, beating it by thirteen%.

Overclocking potential

For some reason, AMD began to limit the overclocking potential of its video cards using a software limiter built into the BIOS of devices. Such a limiter forces the software to stop at a predetermined frequency during overclocking without exceeding it. Such a story happened with video cards Radeon HD 5450, 5570 and some others.

When testing the Radeon HD 5830, we faced the same problem - limited overclocking potential.

At the same time, a certain frequency reserve was left on this video card, the core was allowed to be overclocked at 100MHz, memory at 300MHz. Despite such "mild" overclocking, it allowed a noticeable increase in performance.

Overclocking the Radeon HD 5830 allowed the performance of the GeForce GTX 285 in Company of Heroes, the average frame rate increased by as much as 12% and reached 56fps. In S.T.A.L.K.E.R, we saw a 17% performance boost, allowing the Radeon HD 5830 to outperform the Radeon 5850.

Power consumption and temperatures

Under load, the Radeon HD 5830 consumes 6% less power than the Radeon HD 4890, and achieves the results of the 4870 in this parameter. Although the Radeon HD 5830 is slower than the Radeon HD 5850, it draws more power due to the high clock speed of its GPU. As a result, we see a 13% increase in power consumption compared to the 5850.

The sample of the Radeon HD 5830 that arrived to us had exactly the same board and cooling system as the Radeon HD 5870. And so we were not much surprised when it turned out that the 5830 has the same operating temperature as the 5870 and even the 5850. True As accurate as these results are, they are just as useless - AMD partners will use their own board design and their own cooling system to produce their variant of the 5830.

Conclusion

The Radeon HD 5830 graphics card is a noteworthy member of the updated Radeon HD 5000 series, delivering impressive levels of performance at a much more modest price point than the big brothers the Radeon HD 5850 and Radeon HD 5870. In fact, the Radeon HD 5830 graphics card is an excellent choice for those who want to wants to spend $ 250 on a new graphics card, and interestingly, this particular model will put a lot of pressure on NVidia's GeForce GTX 200 series graphics cards.

The Radeon HD 5830 is about 17% cheaper than the 5850 and is 17% slower on average. It should be mentioned that when buying a Radeon HD 5830, the consumer gets the same set of functions and technologies as in the 5850, only the price of the new video card is lower. The Radeon HD 5830 graphics card will be good for those with a 22 '' (or smaller) monitor.

At resolutions of the order of 1680x1050 or lower, the Radeon HD 5830 will deliver the same toy speed as the 5850. At least with the exception of Crysis Warhead, all the toys worked fine at 1680x1050 with graphics settings set to maximum.

For example, the Radeon 5830 video card showed a frame rate of as much as 88 frames per second in a Wolfenstein game running at 1680x1050 with 8xAA / 8xAF. The average frame rate of Company of Heroes was 87 frames per second, S.T.A.L.K.E.R .: Call of Pripyat gave 65 frames per second, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 showed 90 frames per second, not to mention Street Fighter IV with its hundred fps.

At a resolution of 1680x1050, almost all toys produced more than 60 frames per second, which makes the Radeon HD 5830 an ideal product for gamers playing at low resolutions. Of course, in a large number of toys, the Radeon HD 5830 coped well with large resolutions of 1920 × 1200, and even 2560 × 1600 providing a "playable" frame rate in most toys.

Another tangible plus for the Radeon HD 5830 video card is its overclocking potential. We managed to reach a core frequency of 900 MHz and a memory frequency of 1300 MHz, but despite such a seemingly small increase in frequency, the performance gain was quite noticeable. The frame rate in toys has grown by an average of 17%, imagine if the core could be overclocked to 1 GHz!

At the moment, we still do not understand why AMD is limiting the overclocking frequency of its video cards. Perhaps they are trying to avoid such problems, which we had when testing an early sample of the Radeon HD 5970 (http: // hard .. Frankly speaking, AMD's fears about extremely overclocked frequencies are incomprehensible, because any enthusiast knows what he is doing.

But the fact that performance can still be increased by overclocking by 17% is already a big plus for the reviewed product. Another plus is the design of the boards and third-party cooling - we've already seen some awesome 5830 graphics cards with excellent cooling systems, and if these graphics cards stick to the $ 250 price range, we suspect that they will be difficult to skip buying.

Website verdict: Have you bought a 22 '' monitor and saved up $ 250 for a video card? What are you waiting for? The Radeon 5830 is made for you!

pros

  • Excellent performance
  • Low price
  • Relatively good overclocking potential

Minuses

  • Bulky board
  • Limited frequency

Both in terms of price and in terms of performance, the difference between them came out quite large. Some intermediate model was required, which, moreover, could finally completely replace the old single-chip flagship of the company represented by the Radeon HD 4890.

Without spending energy on developing a new GPU, AMD did it quite simply and released another stripped-down version of the RV870. But unlike the popular Radeon HD 5850, the new video adapter came out as a real "stub". Of the 20 SIMD cores of a full-fledged Cypress, the Radeon HD 5830 has only 14, i.e. instead of 1600 universal stream processors, the junior model costs 1120. Accordingly, the number of texture units has decreased to 56 (4 per SIMD core). As you can see, the number of computing units has decreased by as much as 42%. And the number of rendering units was cut in half - to eight. Just like the RV840 or the old RV770.

With such characteristics, you should not initially count on a high level of performance. But if we compare with the old solutions of the Radeon HD 4800 series, the new accelerator Radeon HD 5830 is still slightly better. The advantages over the Radeon HD 5770 are even greater, because the latter is equipped with a 128-bit memory access interface, while the new card has a full 256-bit bus.

To slightly compensate for the huge number of disabled computing units, the operating frequency of the core is set at 800 MHz, which is 10% higher than that of the older Radeon HD 5850, but lower than that of the top-end Radeon HD 5870 (850 MHz). But the GDDR5 memory operates at the same 4 GHz as the Radeon HD 5850. Taking into account the good overclocking potential of the RV870 and the new generation GDDR5 chips, one can still hope for a good overclocking relative to the initial characteristics.

In terms of power consumption, the Radeon HD 5830, unfortunately, is not happy with its low performance against the background of its fellows. According to official data, the peak power consumption of this adapter is even slightly higher than that of the Radeon HD 5850. However, things are not so bad if we take into account the old Radeon HD 4890s, which are even more “appetites”.

But whether the Radeon HD 5830 will be able to compete with the old solutions, we will just try to find out based on the results of our tests. But first, let's look at a real product of this series.

We got an OEM video adapter from Sapphire. The card is packed in a simple bubble bag with a set of the following accessories:

  • adapter DVI / D-Sub;
  • power adapter "molex-PCI-E";
  • CrossFire bridge;
  • CD with drivers.
The graphics accelerator is completely different from typical video cards of this series, standing out both for the PCB design and the unique cooling system.

The video card is equipped with two DVI connectors, one HDMI and Display Port.

A large (if not huge) fan of the cooling system over the entire width of the board (90 mm) with an original curved blade shape catches the eye.

The radiator is not very large. But the whole structure is permeated with five heat pipes.

The tubes are slightly flattened at the base and soldered onto the copper plate of the heat sink.

A separate simple finned radiator is provided for cooling the elements of the power supply circuit.

The board itself looks like this:

The main difference from the reference lies in the redesigned power subsystem. Sapphire HD5830 1GB GDDR5 is based on R2J20602 DrMOS chips manufactured by the Japanese company Renesas. Such microcircuits are usually used in motherboards, and DrMOS from Renesas are used in expensive top-end products, for example, the MSI 790FX-GD70 uses R2J20604.

The RV870 graphics chip runs at its intended 800 MHz.

The board contains Samsung K4G10325FE-HC04 GDDR5 microcircuits with an access time of 0.4 ns, so you can count on an effective 5 GHz instead of the nominal 4 GHz.

To repeat all of the above, a screenshot of the CPU-Z program with the characteristics of the Radeon HD 5830 video card.

In 2D, the frequencies are reduced from 800/4000 MHz to 157/1200 MHz.

The cooling system has shown excellent efficiency. In the Fur Rendering Benchmark stress test at a resolution of 1680x1050, the chip temperature did not exceed 66 degrees Celsius (at 21 ° C indoors). At 44% fan RPM, this is just an excellent result. In simple 3D applications (i.e. in real games), the peak temperature was even lower, and the fan speed did not exceed 40% of the maximum (about 1500 rpm), while the noise level was minimal. In idle mode, the fan is practically silent, its speed remains within 36% (1360 rpm).

In terms of overclocking, the Sapphire video card did not disappoint us either. Unlike the reference models of the HD 5800 series, this specimen does not have the ability to programmatically control the GPU voltage, which, however, did not prevent it from achieving full stability at a frequency of 960 MHz (20% higher than the nominal). Samsung memory also demonstrated excellent overclocking capabilities and complete stability at an effective frequency of 5512 MHz (37% higher than the nominal and 10% higher than the capabilities of the microcircuits themselves).

It should be noted that for overclocking we did not change the native CO, but the fan speed increased to 85%, which was fraught with a very high hum, and such a mode cannot be called practical. But initially we carried out all tests in the automatic fan speed control mode. True, the card could not withstand the intense load and after five hours of testing, minor problems began. After letting it cool down for five minutes, we set higher revs and passed all tests at the same frequencies without any problems. So, in practice, for everyday use, you will either have to limit yourself to slightly lower frequencies, or still sacrifice acoustic comfort and slightly raise the fan speed. But even the fact that, with significant overclocking, the native cooler was able to provide long-term operation in the standard "quiet" mode, speaks of its high efficiency.
