Console Commands and Additional Optimizations

The console in the Prey game, as in other games on the DooM3-Engine, is invoked by pressing the Ctrl-Alt- ~ key combination. In addition to entering commands in the console or changing the parameters of interest using it, you can edit the config file, in this case it is preyconfig.cfg. The most commonly used commands can be added to a personal .cfg file and run after starting the game (exec (file name) .cfg command) or added directly to the command line. Well, it makes no sense to talk about such well-known things in particular in detail, and therefore let's move on to the most important and interesting console commands of the game.

    For a simpler and more convenient opening of the console, you can use the command com_allowconsole 1 ... Thus, the console will be invoked by pressing only the tilde, and not by a combination of three keys, which is rather inconvenient.

    The frame rate (FPS) is displayed on the screen by the command com_showFPS. To stop displaying, you must enter zero instead of one.

    Team exec[File name], as already mentioned, it launches the created config file and executes all the commands contained in it.

    Team noclip, as many people know, allows you to pass through objects in the game.

      - god turns on god mode.

      - give[item name] - the player receives the desired item.

      - ai_skipthink- disables artificial intelligence of enemies.

      - exit exit from the game.

Editing commands:

    - editor- opens the level editor.

    - editFX- effects editor.

    - modView- view models.

    - devmap[map name]- viewing the map in developer mode.

To enable subsequent commands, you need to put "1" after the name, to disable - "0". So, by the way.

    com_precache allows you to use the pre-caching function, that is, loading some of the necessary objects in advance, which slightly increases overall performance, removing the load from the system at critical moments.

    image_useCache allows you to make full use of caching processes for storing graphic data.

    image_cacheMegs command sets the maximum amount of memory used for caching data. It is not recommended to exhibit more than half of the available one.

    image_cacheMinK the minimum amount of memory for caching is specified in kilobytes (!!!). It is recommended to increase relative to default.

    com_videoRam[size in megabytes] - indicates the amount of video memory used. If the game has determined the volume incorrectly, you can set it to the required value.

    cm_backFaceCull the command disables the processing of all textures and polygons out of the player's field of view, thereby eliminating unnecessary loading of the video processor. However, its use can lead to serious failures.

    com_purgeAll- completely clears the memory during loading of new levels, deleting all information about the old ones.

    com_fixedTic if the option is set to "1", then the 60FPS performance limit is removed, but the in-game physics synchronization is broken.

    r_skipUpdates the team makes dynamic lights static while keeping their intensity and direction unchanged.

    r_znear setting this parameter to a larger value increases the distance over which z-buffering occurs.

    r_useTwoSidedStencil this parameter optimizes the processing of stencil shadows.

    g_projectileLights the command turns on the dynamic processing of lighting from moving objects like rockets.

    g_bloodeffects allows you to enable / disable bloody footprints on surfaces.

    g_showPlayerShadow the command allows you to display the shadow of the player himself.

    image_useNormalCompression the parameter adjusts the compression of textures. "0" - textures will not be compressed, "2" - the highest compression, that is, the lowest quality.

Commands for recording and playing demo videos:

    recordDemo[demo name] - starts recording a demo video.

    stopRecording stops recording.

    playDemo[demo name] - plays the recorded demo.

    avidemo[demo name] - creates a previously recorded demo in .avi format.

    avigame allows you to write an .avi file directly during gameplay, without first creating a demo.

    timeDemo[demo name] - launches demo in bench mode with FPS output on the screen after the end of playback.

    benchmark launches its own bench.

    listCmds displays the entire list of commands.

You can also take a complete list of all console commands.

Testing the performance of video cards Lowand Middle-sectors in the game Prey

To test the performance of video cards in the game Prey, the following popular representatives of the middle and lower price sectors of the market were selected:

    Palit GeForce 7300 GT, operating frequencies 400/800 MHz; 256 MB DDR2, 4/8/8 pipelines (vertex pipelines / pixel pipelines / texture units);

    Palit Radeon X800 XL, operating frequencies 400/1000 MHz; 256MB DDR2, pipelined formula 6/12/12;

    Gigabyte GeForce 7600 GS, operating frequencies 400/800 MHz; 256MB DDR2, pipelined formula 5/12/12;

    Palit GeForce 7600 GS Sonic, operating frequencies 256 MB GDDR3 (!), Pipeline formula 5/12/12;

    ASUSTeK EAX1300 Pro, operating frequencies 600/800 MHz; 256 MB DDR2, 2/4/4 pipelined formula;

    Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro, operating frequencies 500/600 MHz; 256 MB DDR2, pipelined formula 6/12/4;

The cards were tested on the platform with the following configuration:

    AMD Athlon 3000+ processor (overclocked to 2700MHz - 300x9);

    DFI Infinity motherboard based on NVIDIA nForce4 SLI chipset;

    Transcend RAM (Hynix chips) 2x1Gb DDR SDRAM 300 (1: 0.7) MHz (2.5: 3: 3: 7);

    Samsung HD160JJ SATA II 160Gb hard drive;

    Operating system WindowsXP SP2; DX9.0c;

    Monitor LG Flatron F700P;

    FSP550-60PLN power supply manufactured by FSP Group Inc.

    Drivers: NVIDIA ForceWare version 91.33, ATI Catalyst version 6.7.

The tests were carried out in three configurations of settings, two modes for each: with and without antialiasing and anisotropic filtering enabled.

Testing at higher settings:

All parameters are enabled, texture and shader settings are set to maximum quality.

Test results:

In light modes, without anti-aliasing and filtering, the Palit GeForce 7600 GS Sonic wins. In principle, it is the favorite in this study, since it has the fastest memory and sufficiently high chip frequencies. Besides, Prey is an OpenGL game, and cards from NVIDIA are known to outperform competitors in such games. So it happened now: in light modes, three cards based on NVIDIA chips showed excellent results, only Palit Radeon X800XL could compete with them. The other two Radeon were far behind. Moreover, the gap between the X1600 Pro and X1300 Pro turned out to be minimal! Apparently, the bottleneck for the X1600 Pro is again its texture units, the load on which in this game is very high. Even three pixel quads in the X1600 Pro versus only one in the X1300 Pro did not save the situation.

But when you turn on the heavy mode, with anti-aliasing, the picture has changed slightly. Palit Radeon X800 XL took the lead, its advantage over Palit GeForce 7600 GS Sonic was about 10%. The rest of the picture has not changed.

Testing on medium settings:

The quality of textures and shaders is average, the settings for reflection, bump maps, glow, particles and surfaces are disabled. Shadows, reflections and bump are included.

Test results:

At medium settings, there is a problem with the Prey benchmark - the FPS ceiling is up to sixty. This, in principle, was one of the reasons why testing was carried out for mainstream and budget cards. The ceiling problem can be solved and the solution was described above. However, as already noted, this leads to some defects and failures, so we did not use this method.

As for the immediate results, the picture has not changed in the light modes - the X1600 Pro and X1300 Pro are far behind. Palit GeForce 7600 GS Sonic does not leave anyone the slightest chance. In heavy modes, it also leads, but with an increase in resolution, its gap from Palit Radeon X800 XL is reduced to a minimum and disappears altogether.

Testing at low settings:

The quality of textures and shaders is low, and note that we did not disable shaders completely! All other options are disabled.

Test results:

The performance gain in low modes is noticeable only for two lagging cards, while the rest easily reached the 60 FPS ceiling. Moreover, the gain of these cards is quite solid - about 50%! But in heavy modes there was already a struggle, in which Palit Radeon X800 XL won, although its advantage over its closest competitor was within 10%. The outsiders of testing did not manage to come close to the main group - three GeForce, and those, in turn, did not seriously compete with the leaders.

Outcomes

So, without exaggeration, the game itself turned out to be gorgeous. Well-designed atmosphere, quite entertaining, albeit predictable plot, unobtrusive and not very stressful gameplay that does not let you get bored for a minute. Every moment the game presents something new, and this should be appreciated. The very high quality DooM3-Engine has become an excellent basis for the game, has undergone some improvements and looks even better. You should not expect a revolution in the genre from Prey, although we did find a few fresh and unfinished ideas. This is a very good and high quality, almost classic shooter.

As for the testing, it only confirmed our conclusions regarding the prospects of certain video cards, which we previously made in the respective reviews. The highlight of the program is the Palit GeForce 7600 GS Sonic - a card that offers high performance, although it belongs to the mid-price segment. The success of Palit Radeon X800 XL proved several points: firstly, this card is still competitive, and secondly, we can conclude that the graphics engine has been optimized for ATI cards.

As for the Palit GeForce 7300 GT, it has shown itself from the best side, practically keeping up with its elder brother Gigabyte GeForce 7600 GS, which does him honor, especially considering the difference in their price.

"Performance" of Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro cannot be called anything other than a failure. ATI's X1600 series turned out to be not very successful, at least the cards do not work out their money. Well, ASUS EAX1300 Pro showed exactly what was expected of it. These cards do not compete with the budget GeForce 7300 GT and can hardly be considered a profitable investment.

Back in 2006, Human Head Studios presented a good-quality peppy shooter Prey, about a guy of Indian descent, beating off his beloved from aliens. For a long time, the copyright holder in the person of Bethesda Softworks tried to somehow develop the original ideas, and we even saw the amusing trailers of Prey 2. But in the end, the sequel was frozen, and work began on a completely new project and relaunch. The legacy is the idea of unsuccessful contact with aggressive aliens, otherwise it is a completely new game. The developers from Arkane Studios did not disappoint, and gave us another great game. And although many have already spoken about Prey 2017, we will not ignore this topic either. At the same time, we will supplement the review with comparative testing of video cards.

Prey skillfully captures the player's attention from the first minutes, quickly twisting the intrigue and drawing him into a whirlwind of strange events. As the introduction progresses, it becomes clear that the hero is participating in some kind of experiment, and the scope of this experiment expands rapidly when measured life turns into a simulation. Broken glass reveals a vast laboratory room and true reality, and an unknown voice over the radio provides clues and guides the hero on his adventure.

The hero of the game, Morgan Yu, finds himself inside a large space station with fragmentary knowledge about himself and with a complete lack of understanding of what is happening. We try to navigate a difficult situation with the help of unknown prompts, our own addresses from the past, and the instructions of the brother-director. Transtar Corporation develops advanced technologies for brain modification. All these activities are related to the study of alien life forms. The creatures called typhons were kept in isolation for the time being, but, as is usually the case, at some point everything went awry. The aliens broke free and began to take over the station, wreaking havoc and death. In such an environment, it is necessary not only to find answers to questions, but also to survive.

Prey delivers a high level of immersion through skillfully presented intrigue and how we get to know the game. In the absence of an explicit plot corridor with a certain freedom of action, the game willingly shares information about its world through numerous audio recordings, reading mail on personal computers and other sources. A common mosaic is formed from different fragments. As you progress through the storyline, the incident becomes overgrown with details and details. And the more attentively you study the world, the more you will learn about the station and individual personalities. It is enough to show some perseverance in research, and the game will begin to grow overgrown with additional tasks, expanding the main adventure.

At first, real people are represented mainly by mutilated corpses. But at some point it will come to meetings with survivors, which will not always take place in a situation of complete mutual understanding and joy. We may face dilemmas where the fate of specific people will depend on the final choice. And the game itself brings us to a variable ending, which consists of the final actions and the chain of previous actions.

The gameplay is also based on variability. Initially, Prey resembles a shooter with advanced research and leveling in the spirit of BioShock. In the plot and visual terms, there are also a lot of analogies, but as you delve deeper into the station, you realize that this is a completely original game with different accents in the game mechanics. Prey encourages caution and a skillful combination of skills, which is determined by the game circumstances and the characteristics of the enemies.

The simplest opponents are facial expressions, which can turn into different objects. These creatures can be hammered with a simple monkey wrench, but due to their ability to mimicry, their unexpected appearances can be well worn. This forces you to take a closer look at your surroundings - a slight tremor, a cup falling off the table, or noise can indicate a threat.

Large creatures do not exhibit superior feigning skills, but can quickly change position and disappear into thin air. The most dangerous phantom enemies demonstrate good survivability and lethal combinations of energy strikes. There are varieties of alien creatures that can create small assistants for themselves or control people. Physical damage is often combined with psychic or telekinetic damage, which makes it more difficult to control the hero and aim. Therefore, it is best to strike unexpectedly, hide and not forget about a bottle of alcohol to normalize your state of mind.

The best combat partner for us will be a special gypsum cannon. It allows you to flood the enemy with foam and temporarily immobilize. Thanks to this technique, you can fix both small mimics and more serious enemies. All of them will quickly break free from the shackles of the foam, but a short delay is enough to deliver a couple of blows. The cannon is also a means of repair, if you need to temporarily block a short-circuiting electrical panel or stop a fiery flame from a punctured pipe.

There are also deadly weapons - a pistol, a shotgun, a beam cannon. They give more confidence about a simple wrench in hand, but limited ammo supplies force you to act carefully. Many enemies are difficult to kill with banal point-blank shooting, as this will require a hefty portion of valuable ammunition and a large expenditure of medical supplies. Stealth is used, which will provide the advantage of the first strike, the repaired turret will support with fire, the captured gas cylinder will turn into a projectile. If the fight does not bode well, you can distract enemies and try to sneak around unnoticed.

There is a funny illegal weapon that can be used in solving other problems. For example, a dart launcher will allow you to press a button on a remote control that cannot be approached close due to grills or other restrictions. The shocker will allow you to calm down violent people who have become puppets in the hands of special typhons.

Large levels with complex internal architecture always provide a wide range of options for action. The station is divided into several large compartments with an intricate structure, where the interiors intersect, some doors are open, many passages are blocked. In fact, these are separate mini-sandboxes available for careful study. We choose different paths based on our capabilities and personal tactics. Somewhere it is easier to crawl through the ventilation duct, somewhere with the help of ingenuity, you can find an unexpected solution and go into a new room. Certain sectors at a certain level of development are very dangerous for us or are simply closed. You can look there when you re-raid this location, when there are new opportunities to unblock the passage or sufficient forces to resist powerful enemies. The narrative in the game is built in such a way that you often have to return to old places, although within the framework of the main story it all looks logical and not burdensome. If you are scrupulous about completing absolutely all side quests, then perhaps this will require more time and boring scouring through the levels.

The abilities of the hero during the game are improved by pumping. Upgrading skills is carried out when installing neuromods, and each new improvement requires more of them. At the beginning, we have three branches of pumping the scientific, engineering and security directions available, which allow us to improve health, weapon damage, increase hacking and repair skills, and much more. Some of the skills affect the possibilities of exploring the world. With the appropriate strength, you will be able to disassemble rubble and open new passages, hacking skills will allow you to hack into various computer systems.

At a certain point, Prey takes the hero's capabilities to a new level, opening up specific branches of psi-skills. By pumping them, Morgan will be able to beat typhons with energy, he will learn mimicry and mind control skills. This will greatly expand combat and research capabilities. Combining Shotgun and Energy Strike makes it easier to destroy a tough opponent. And having turned into a cup, you can roll into many cracks and previously inaccessible rooms. As a result, we will become closer to the original enemies, which can affect the attitude of the computer security system towards us. Having increased the psi-ability, the hero will be forced to resist the security turrets, which will begin to take him for an "alien". And all this will ultimately affect the ending and plot denouement.

With the pumping of inhuman abilities associated with the need to scan typhons to obtain the appropriate experience. It is clear that it is extremely difficult to do this in an open battle, which makes you be even more careful or even more impetuous in your actions.

Gathering ingredients and crafting consumables is essential. On every table or in a drawer, there is always some kind of junk that you can throw into your inventory. At special stations, the trash is processed into components to create ammunition or recovery means. And this is very much in demand, since in tense skirmishes, supplies disperse quickly. And if you do not take care of collecting items and crafting, then the found cartridges or grenades are clearly not enough for all serious opponents. Along the way, you can find different blueprints for new weapons, although getting ready-made copies will not be difficult.

Periodically, Prey reminds us of space, forcing us to go out into open space or travel through compartments with zero gravity. Such walks are no less dangerous than exploring internal compartments with aggressive creatures. After unlocking the locks in different compartments, they can be used at any time to more conveniently move between distant parts of the station.

Distinctive styling plays an important role in creating a special atmosphere and a sense of deep immersion. Arkane Studios once again shows that without striving for underlined realism, interesting images and a convincing world can be created. Prey events develop in the 30s of an alternative future, where the development of the world took a slightly different path in the 60s of the last century. And the surroundings are more in line with the spirit of retro-futurism, reminiscent of old science fiction movies. But it looks stylish and beautiful. By the way, local electronic music quite organically fits into this style.

An interesting visual design is combined with high-quality technological performance thanks to the CryEngine 4. Prey shows detailed interiors with a lot of glare and reflective surfaces, and a good play of light.

Nice picture does not put forward prohibitive requirements for GPU power. We decided to reveal the topic of performance and conduct comparative testing of video cards in Prey. We used our standard test platform for video card reviews. The test scene is shown below.

The selected profile is the highest quality graphics (Very High), which provides anti-aliasing SMAA T2X. Test results in 1920x1080 resolution are presented below.

The results show that even budget video cards GeForce GTX 960 and GeForce GTX 1050 Ti can provide 40-50 fps, the old Radeon R9 270X is noticeably worse, but also produces more or less acceptable results. Better to play on models with 3 GB or higher memory. Higher class video adapters already produce more than 60 fps. The Radeon RX 570 and GeForce GTX 780 Ti are on the same level, and the Radeon RX 580 is weaker than the GeForce GTX 1060 in the 6 GB version.

Older models are additionally tested at an increased resolution of 2560x1440.

Radeon RX 580 and GeForce GTX 1060 cope with such a mode with dignity, the advantage of the NVIDIA representative remains. Loading video memory in this resolution at the level of 4 GB and higher.

Prey is another great game from Arkane Studios. Although it was released six months after Dishonored 2, it feels very different. The development was carried out by another division, which tried to do something original, and the authors certainly succeeded. Prey is similar in spirit to BioShock and Deus Ex, but from a mix of familiar ideas, something distinctive and original is obtained. This is an atmospheric fantasy adventure with an interesting story, original style and thoughtful gameplay that provides many opportunities and provides variability in the passage. Prey can only confuse those who expect a banal shooter in a beautiful wrapper, because the game is deeper and more cunning. Probably the best sci-fi action movie of 2017. Do not miss!
