Two cores, four, eight ... manufacturers continue pull the wool over someone's eyes uninformed buyers, successfully convincing most of them that the number of cores is directly proportional to performance. This is not entirely true - not all Android applications are capable of using even two cores, so you should not expect performance miracles. They will not be, especially since all eight cores Oxygen's Mediatek MT6592 chip is based on unproductive(but economical) ARM Cortex A7 architecture, but work at frequencies that are low by today's standards 700 MHz to 1.7 GHz... Not the least role is played by the built-in storage memory - the results of the AndroBench 3 benchmark show that its operating speed noticeably lags behind that of the memory of Motorola Moto G, and sometimes even Sony Xperia M2. Yes and video adapter Mali-450 MP4 is not the newest model, slightly behind Qualcomm Adreno 320 in Snapdragon S4 chips.

Disappointed Are we stuffing a smartphone? Not at all... It's nice to work with the browser, no delays, all existing games run smoothly at high or even maximum settings (although it should be noted that the maximum display resolution is not that high)... In a budget smartphone, such performance is still rare, so in this discipline the Archos 50c Oxygen has shown itself very good... You just need to understand that the cherished eight cores do not put the smartphone on a par with the flagships of the Samsung Galaxy S5 level, and if performance (as well as its stock for the future) is required as much as possible, then you should look for something more powerful (and more expensive). Well, in its price range, Oxygen is almost unrivaled, see for yourself by reading the benchmarks below. Competitors manage to get ahead only in memory performance tests and, occasionally and only slightly, in graphics.

Of course, the difference in real use cases may be much smaller - benchmarks can distort the picture, using processor resources more efficiently than conventional applications do. But, as we have already said, the system performance in all practical tasks is very good. The only thing to be afraid of is the unexpected tricks of the Chinese company's chipset and the lack of support for third-party firmware like the popular Cyanogemod - Mediatek flatly refuses to issue the source code necessary for their creation, thereby causing the burning dislike of supporters of flashing Android devices. If you are one of them, then Oxygen, like other devices with Mediatek chips, should be struck off the list of potential purchases. In this case, one of the competing devices with a chip from Qualcomm may turn out to be a more attractive option, despite "only" 2-4 processor cores and slightly slower graphics.

Hey, Giktimes! Since the first announcements, many have liked the Archos 50c Helium. First of all, at the price, just below its price segment, and a really powerful, productive processor. As well as a pleasant matte case, which does not leave fingerprints and which fits well in the hand (such a solution has proven itself well since the days of Note3). So, Archos 50c Helium 4G is a new smartphone from the French manufacturer in the middle price segment.

Packaging and delivery set.

It looks like a box from a smartphone.

Inside the box, in addition to the phone and operating instructions, there are: a headset, a USB cable<=>micro USB, power supply

Appearance

Body material - textured matte plastic with leather-like finish). Around the perimeter of the device is a silver edging.

At the top of the front panel there are: front camera, earpiece, notification indicator, light sensor.

At the bottom there are three touch buttons: "Menu", "Home screen", "Back".

On the back panel, the main camera lens and flash are located on top, and the main speaker is on the bottom.

Under the removable panel, the device has 2 slots for Micro-SIM, as well as a slot for microSD.

On the top there is a 3.5 mm audio jack and a micro-USB port, and on the bottom there is a microphone

The right side of the smartphone is occupied by the power button and the volume control button. The left button is missing.

Ergonomics

The smartphone lies well in the hand. There is an inconvenience to work with the device at first (if you are not accustomed to 5-inch devices), but it quickly passes. The phone is well assembled, does not creak.

Screen

The smartphone has a 5-inch TFT-IPS screen with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels. The resolution is low for such a diagonal, but due to this the device shows good performance. The text is read well, the images look decent. The screen has good viewing angles. In sunny weather, the backlight is not enough, in other situations it allows you to read from the screen without any problems.

Interface

The interface is standard for this version of the operating system. You can change the interface as you wish. From the standard settings, you can change the background. Your obedient servant has installed a launcher, of which there are plenty in the Play Market. Thanks to launchers, you can change the interface as your heart desires. Go Launcher EX and Launcher PRO are perfect for you. It should also be noted that any changes to the "stock" appearance and the original Android settings will lead to performance changes. It is convenient to use the smartphone with one hand. You can easily reach all the menus and buttons.

Apparatus in operation

The smartphone has a 4-core MediaTek MT6732 with a clock frequency of 1.3GHz, a Mali-T760 MP2 graphics accelerator and 1GB of RAM. Internal memory for use is available 5.6 GB out of 8 GB - part of it is occupied by system files. For tests, I used a 32GB Kingston microSD card (http://www.ulmart.ru/goods/239204). The speed of the memory card is more than sufficient and does not lead to freezes or braking of the smartphone.

Due to the high performance, games do not slow down. Everything is comfortable. The smartphone worked normally. No manipulation was used to improve performance.

In the test for AnTuTu Benchmark the device scored 29910 points. The screenshots show that the performance is higher than that of the HTC One, although the cost of the latter exceeds ARCHOS 50c Helium almost 3 times!

The main speaker is loud. It provides decent audio playback and also lets you hear ringtone and notifications wherever your phone is.

Camera

The software for working with the camera is standard. There are settings - white balance, ISO, exposure, HDR. Among the interesting options - activation of shooting when the camera captures two fingers or a smiling face.

The phone has 2 cameras: 5MP and 0.3MP. The quality of the main camera is average. Landscapes were often blurry.

At close range, the images were also of average quality. Although if we compare cameras with 5MP from various smartphone manufacturers, the quality of shooting on this unit is very high.

The best shots were obtained when the objects were at a distance of 3-4 meters from the lens.

Panoramic shooting proved to be very good, without flaws in the gluing

The quality of the front camera is more than enough for broadcasting video conferencing.

Wireless interfaces

The smartphone supports GSM, UTMS (2G and 3G) networks, as well as LTE (4G).

The device works with 2 SIM cards and is able to manage the networks of two different operators at the same time. There is support for Wi-Fi 802.11b / g / n in the 2.4GHz frequency band, Bluetooth 4.0. The 50c Helium is capable of receiving FM radio signals.

Autonomous work

The device has a 2500 mAh lithium-ion battery. With moderate use of the device in the talk mode, the charge lasts for 1.5-2 days, while we can still afford to listen to music and surf the Internet for a couple of hours. Games with good 3D graphics drain the phone in 5-6 hours at medium brightness. If you play with a simpler toy, in the style of Tower Defense, the battery will last for a couple of hours.

Outcomes

Archos 50c Helium very good for its price segment. Its main plus is speed. Both the transfer rate and data processing are fast. During the entire period of use, the phone never hung up. There are no brakes when watching videos in high quality, while the size of the screen allows you not to strain your eyes. Convenient to carry in your jeans or jacket pocket. The phone looks classy and elegant thanks to its white color and leather-like back panel. The dimensions of the device allow you to comfortably use the phone with one hand. The device will become a very good choice for those who do not want to choose between quality and price, and for those for whom style is not an alien concept. In general, the emotions from the use are very positive.

Pros:

  • Support for 2 SIM-cards
  • Nice design
  • High speed of work
  • High data transfer rate

Minuses:

  • Weak battery

Smartphones with a large battery have become a kind of visiting card of inexpensive brands. Almost all of them have their own "long-liver". So the well-known company did not stand aside for many. A smartphone has recently entered the market Archos 50 Power, the main feature of which is a 4000 mAh battery. Yes, this is not a record, there have been monsters with 5000 mAh and more batteries on the market for a long time, but they look the same. In our case, we managed to reach a compromise - a fairly capacious battery is combined with a pleasant appearance and small dimensions.

Specifications:

  • Screen: 5 inches, IPS, 293 ppi, 1280x720;
  • Operating system: Android 5.1;
  • Processor: MediaTek MT6735P, 4 cores, 1 GHz;
  • GPU: Mali-T720;
  • RAM: 2 GB;
  • Built-in memory: 16 GB,
  • Support for memory cards: microSD up to 32 GB;
  • SIM slots: 2, micro-SIM + nano-SIM, Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS);
  • Communication: GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz; LTE 800/1800/2100/2600 MHz;
  • Communications: Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi b / g / n 2.4 GHz;
  • Navigation: GPS;
  • Cameras: main 13 Mp (flash, autofocus), front 2 Mp;
  • Battery: 4000 mAh;
  • Dimensions: 145 x 72.2 x 9.2 mm;
  • Weight: 148 grams;
  • Price: 8000 rubles.

Packaging and equipment

The smartphone came to us in its original packaging. The size of the box is very small, simple and without unnecessary information. As always, there is an image of the device itself, its characteristics and information about the manufacturer.

Contents of delivery:

  • Archos 50 Power Smartphone;
  • Charger;
  • USB-MicroUSB cable;
  • Headset;
  • A clip for opening the SIM card tray;
  • Film on the screen;
  • Documentation.

Agree, the kit is pretty good by modern standards. Even if the headset is not of the best quality, and the film is the most common, but they still exist, for which we are grateful to the manufacturer.

Appearance and features

The smartphone is black, completely black. This is most striking at the first examination. The second is its streamlined shape, all corners are rounded, no sharp edges. When turned off, the screen merges with the front panel and you get a completely black bar, it looks great. The bezels around the screen are average, you can't call them particularly narrow. The front panel glass is ordinary, straight, without fillets and 2.5D effect, that is, the films can be glued without any problems. The build quality of the case is not the best. Although the case is not collapsible, the back cover cannot be removed, but it does not feel monolithic. When you press on the back cover, a soft crunch is heard.

Dimensions 145 x 72.2 x 9.2 mm. The length and width are quite standard for a 5-inch device, but the thickness is quite large, but this is due to the capacious battery, so it is justified. The smartphone weighs 148 grams, which is not so much.

The back cover is plastic with a soft-touch coating. It is pleasant to the touch, non-slip, but a little easily soiled. Due to the rounded body, the smartphone fits perfectly in the hand. This applies to both people with a large palm and a small one. In terms of usability, the Archos 50 Power deserves a solid "top five".

The case has a standard set of controls and ports. Above the screen there is an earpiece, a camera and a proximity / light sensor. There are no complaints about these elements, they work correctly. There are no buttons under the screen, they are transferred to the screen itself. Someone categorically does not recognize the onscreen buttons, someone quite likes them, so this moment, as they say, is not for everybody.

On the back is the main camera module, LED flash and speaker. There are no complaints about the sound, it is quite loud, at a high volume level, especially strong flaws are not audible.

On the left side there is a volume control button. An unusual solution, but quite convenient. Below is a MicroUSB port, which is shifted to the left.

On the right is the SIM card tray and the power button. Above is a standard 3.5mm audio output. Actually, this is where the elements of the case end.

Let's say a few more words about the SIM card tray. A paper clip is included to remove it. You can install either two SIM cards nanoSIM + microSIM, or one microSIM and a microSD memory card. It is this option that is now the most popular; in order to expand the built-in memory, you will have to sacrifice a second SIM card. The smartphone has one radio module, the cards operate in Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) mode, which means that one card is unavailable when talking on the other. It is also a standard scheme, almost all modern smartphones with two SIMs work according to it, with rare exceptions.

Screen

The smartphone is equipped with a 5-inch screen, IPS manufacturing technology. The resolution is 1280 by 800 pixels, which gives a density of 293 ppi. The diagonal of the screen, by modern standards, is quite small, in fact, like the resolution. But some obvious flaws in the image are not visible. Individual pixels are visible only upon closer inspection, in everyday use the screen looks good and pleasant. The colors are natural, no obvious shades have been noticed. Brightness is sufficient for comfortable use in daylight. The minimum brightness level is suitable for using the smartphone in the dark.

The viewing angles are wide, which is expected, because the IPS matrix, and they have long been learned to do them well, even in the budget segment of devices.

There were no obvious overexposures against a dark background, the illumination is uniform.

Operating system and software

The smartphone runs on a new version of the Android 5.1 operating system with minimal interference in design and layout. In general, the system is "clean", looks exactly as conceived by Google. And this is good, since the own shells of budget brands often only make things worse. The appearance of the system will be familiar to many users of new smartphones. There is a menu where all applications are stored, access to widgets from the desktop, a double curtain, and so on. The set of preinstalled software is minimal, only Google services, there are no branded or third-party applications.

SIM card management, calling app and writing short messages are absolutely standard. When using two SIM cards, you can choose the one that will be used by default for calls, Internet or SMS, or you can set the ability to select a SIM for each action.

Performance and memory

The manufacturer chose MediaTek MT6735P as a platform. This is an already proven budget chip with four Cortex-A53 cores, the operating frequency of which is limited to 1 GHz. Responsible for graphics processing is the Mali-T720 core with support for OpenGL ES 3.0 technology in conjunction with OpenCL 1.2. This platform is designed for mid-price devices focused on everyday tasks and work with media content. The main advantage of the MT6735P is its omnivorousness in terms of supporting communication networks. The chip works seamlessly with any cellular networks, including Russian ones.

Now about the memory. The amount of RAM is 2 GB, of which 1.3 GB is free after loading the system. A good indicator. In our opinion, and not only in ours, it is 2 GB that is now the minimum amount of memory for stable operation. Built-in permanent memory of 16 GB, of which 10 GB is available, in principle, you can do without a memory card, but then you have to save space and use cloud services.

You shouldn't expect anything supernatural from the Mali-T720. The video core is definitely not for heavy gaming. Timekillers and 2D games can be played easily and without any problems, when launching more complex 3D games you will have to "play" with the settings, the same Asphalt 8 runs well at medium settings, but at high settings, friezes are clearly visible. So if gaming is a priority, then this smartphone is unlikely to satisfy the high needs of the gamer.

As for everyday tasks, such as launching useful applications, the Internet, instant messengers, and the like, no problems were noticed. In the Google Chrome browser, you can safely work with several tabs, while keeping several applications running for communication. There is enough RAM, as well as the speed of the processor. Everything in the interface is as smooth and fast as possible.

Wireless interfaces

The smartphone works on any cellular networks, including 4G. During the time of use, it was noted that the signal reception in the city was stable, no loss of communication was noticed. This applies to both 2G / 3G networks and 4G. Mobile internet speed is high.

The Wi-Fi module is also stable. At 5 meters from the router, the signal is maximum, the data transfer rate corresponds to the declared tariff.

Navigation is carried out using GPS, support for GLONASS, unfortunately, is absent. A cold start takes no more than 20 seconds, and 10 satellites were detected. The positioning accuracy is very high.

Camera

The main camera module has a resolution of 13 MP. Autofocus works with average speed and accuracy. Frankly, the quality of the photo is not at all pulling at 13 MP. If in daylight it turns out to be somehow bearable, then in artificial light or in the twilight, the photo is of very poor quality. The front camera is similar. Suitable only for video calls.

The camera interface is unremarkable. There are few settings, but all the most necessary ones are there. The maximum photo resolution is 4160x3120 pixels, the maximum resolution of the recorded video is 1280x720 pixels.

Examples of photos.

Autonomous work

Naturally, autonomy is the main advantage of the Archos 50 Power. The 4000 mAh battery provided the result in the PCMark test for more than 8 hours. In this case, Wi-Fi was turned on and the brightness was set to 100%. The battery is discharged evenly, without jerks and surges. When it comes to battery life in real life, this is the same smartphone that does not need to be charged every day. In a mixed scenario of use (several hours of Internet, constantly loaded instant messengers, several calls, some games), the smartphone lasts for 2 days. If you use the device in a sparing mode, then Archos 50 Power will work on a single charge for 3 or even 4 days.

Eventually

The Archos 50 Power has two big advantages. The first is, of course, its capacious battery, which provides excellent battery life. The second is the appearance. The smartphone looks simple but stylish at the same time. Completely black does its job. Besides, many will like the screen of the device, it is quite good for this price segment. The nuances include only low performance in games, after all, the platform is already quite old and unsuitable for heavy modern games, at the same time it is more than enough for the smooth operation of the interface and simple toys.

The price of the Archos 50 Power is about 8,000 rubles. For such a stylish "long-liver", it is quite justified. In addition, the brand is quite well-known even in the Russian market.

Pros:

  • High autonomy;
  • Nice screen;
  • Stylish appearance;
  • Fast work of GPS.

Minuses:

  • Low gaming performance;
  • Mediocre cameras.
