Weather in Savona

In winter, in Savona, as a rule, it is mostly rainy and cloudy, snow is also not uncommon here, therefore the best months for a trip, I believe, the period from May to October. There is practically no rain in the city in summer, it can even be called arid.

Port of Savona

The port of Savona is an important link in the economy of the region and the whole of Italy. After all, it is the second most important in the region. The port carries out both cargo transportation and actively cooperates with cruise companies, the largest of which is Costa Crociere.

Sea of savona

The sea of Savona, as elsewhere in Italy, is clean, but of course cargo and cruise ships, of which there are many in the local port, have a negative impact. And this is perhaps one of the main reasons why many tourists do not consider Savona as one of the best resorts in Italy.

But nevertheless, the coast of the city was awarded such an important prestigious European award as "Blue Flag", and they wouldn't have given it just like that. For Italians, this city has long been a favorite destination for their summer vacations.

As a rule, in summer the beaches of Savona are quite busy, especially in August, because it is the time of holidays in Italy.

From mid-June, you can observe the appearance of paid beaches along the entire coast, offering their services for the convenience of vacationers (umbrellas, sun loungers, warm showers, a bar, snack bars and much more).

On average, the cost (per day) of two sun loungers and an umbrella from 10.00 to 20.00 euros... Many offer discounts if visitors take a subscription for a week, two, a month ... Free beaches in Savona are also available, they can easily be found by asking a question to local residents.

Savona culinary traditions

The cuisine of Liguria, and in particular the city of Savona, relies on seafood, meat, vegetables and herbs. A special place in the cuisine of Savona is occupied by spices, which give special aromas and piquancy to not very complex dishes.

Most used herbs:

  • basil;
  • rosemary;
  • thyme;
  • parsley;
  • celery;
  • rosemary;
  • Bay leaf
  • red pepper (peperoncino) which is widely used throughout Italy.

Here are a few dishes that every good housewife in Savona can cook:

Focaccette with cheese(Focaccette al formaggio) - a kind of flat pie of round or square shape fried in a large amount of butter or baked in the oven with cheese.

Ligurian rabbit with olives (Coniglio alla ligure con le olive) - one of the most common Ligurian dishes. The rabbit is fried in olive oil with spices (garlic, onion, celery, rosemary, thyme, sage, bay leaf) and then stewed with a glass of red wine, water and olives. In Italy, polenta is considered the ideal side dish for the Ligurian rabbit.

Dried cod stew with potatoes(Stoccafisso in umido con patate) is another dish often prepared for Christmas in this region. Dried cod for this dish is soaked in water, then chopped and mixed with onions pre-fried in olive oil, tomatoes, salt, pepper, parsley, garlic, wine, water and chopped potatoes are added.

Chestnuts are especially popular in Savona, of which they have managed to make a wonderful delicacy here. They are fried here, added to baked goods, made jam, or delicious sweets that resemble castagne candite are prepared. Which tourists prefer to buy as souvenirs.

Finally, a short video about the main attractions of the city:

Savona is a small port city in Italy. It is often used for Mediterranean cruise routes. The city is actively visited by tourists, and they remain enchanted by the beauty of this corner of Italy. There is really something to see in Savona, since the city has an eventful history.
The observation tower of Torre Pancaldo is the main attraction of Savona. The tower was built in the 14th century. The building is fully consistent with the medieval style. It is named Torre Pankaldo in honor of the famous Magellan's assistant who helped him sail Cape Horn and become the first European navigator to make such a voyage. The observation tower stands on the site of the former city wall.

One of the most beautiful churches in Savona is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. The building was built in the neo-baroque style. The church was erected by order of Pope Sixtus the Fourth, who was going to use it as a tomb for a kind. You can admire the Church of Santa Maria Assunta at any time, but you can go inside only by booking a time in advance.

How to get to the port?

First of all, it should be noted that there is no international airport in the city of Savona... Cities located relatively close to Savona are Genoa(40 km) and Milan(170 km). It is from these cities that we will consider options for travel to the port.

First option- it order a taxi from the airport (hotel) in Genoa or Milan to the port. True, this will be the most expensive option.

The second option is to use a transfer, if one is offered by the cruise company itself... Transfers are available from Milan Airport (Malpensa), from Milan Central Station (Stazione Centrale), from Genoa Airport (Cristoforo Colombo) and from Genoa Central Station (Genova Piazza Principale).

The third option is trains. First, consider the road from Genoa. If you arrived in Genoa, then, first of all, you need to get from the airport to Genoa Central Station.From Genoese The international Christopher Columbus airport(Aeroporto Cristoforo Colombo) the city center is just a stone's throw away (about 8 km). There is a bus from the airport to the city center, it takes about 30 minutes. One more point should be taken into account - the Principe Train Stations stop is not the final one, the route ends at another, distant station in Genoa - Brignole. To go further to Savona, you need to get off at the Principe Train Stations stop - be careful!

After you arrive at the station, you need to purchase a train ticket to Savona. There are trains that run to Savona in 1 hour, or faster trains that reach Savona in half an hour. Trains leave approximately every 20-30 minutes.

From Savona train station to port a taxi ride will take 7-10 minutes. The cruise terminal is located right in the city. You can walk from the city center in 10-15 minutes, and from the railway station in 20-25 minutes.

If you arrived in Milan(Malpensa, Linate or Bergamo airport), then you again need to get to Milan Central Station (Milan Central Station, or Milano Centrale) first. There is a shuttle bus from all three airports. From Malpensa Airport to the Central Railway Station can be reached by the Malpensa Express train (departure from Terminal 1). And from Bergamo, as an option, you can first take a bus to the nearby town of Bergamo of the same name (3 km away) and there take a train going through Milan to Savona (with a change in Milan).

There is a direct train from Milan to Savona, which runs about 5 times a day, the train takes just over 2 hours. You can also buy a train ticket to Genoa and then the train to Savona. The total travel time is about 3 hours.
The train schedule can be viewed here: http://www.trenitalia.com/. Train tickets in Italy can be booked in advance on the Italian Railways website or purchased locally. Be sure to validate your ticket! This can be done at the entrance to the platform (at the beginning of each platform) in special machines (composters in the color of the Italian flag or yellow), there you need to insert the ticket, move it a little, without letting it out of your hands, and get it.

In 2018. the port of Savona was visited by 194 liners and 842.845 passengers. It is one of the ten largest in the Mediterranean and is the base for the cruise company Costa Cruises, so many of its cruises start from here.

If you have a large parking lot in Savona and Genoa is not on your route, you can take the train there. Genoa is a beautiful city worth visiting.

Both Milan and Savona caught a glimpse

We had the following logistics from Riga to Savona: a flight Riga-Milan with Ryanair (arrival at Bergamo airport), then by train from Milan to Savona for 2 hours. We spend the night in Savona. Then they regretted not staying in Bergamo. From afar, the town is very interesting, like Sartin, so medieval.

And the road would not be so difficult, because the flight plus the train tired us very much. We were at the hotel only at 12 at night. We arrived in Bergamo at about three o'clock in the afternoon. We took a shuttle bus to Milan, the fare is 5 euros per person.
We flew back with our "Airboltic" from Malpensa airport, and the bus to the airport costs 10 euros per person.

Train tickets from Milan to Savona cost 9 euros, and there was only one ticket back for 9 euros, the second was bought for 19 euros.

We had three hours before the train in Milan, and we took the metro to the square with the Cathedral. The journey costs 1.50 euros. We were in Milan for the first time, and now we got a glimpse of the city.

We wanted to go up to the roof of the Duomo Cathedral, but we were late. It was already closed. Open only until 18:00. But then we got to the solemn liturgy or Mass. I don’t know how the Catholics call such a service correctly.

We returned to the station and drove to Savona. I was not particularly upset that they didn’t see anything in Milan. The city is not for me. But, if the next time will be longer, then of course, we will investigate it in more detail.

Savona.

Booked Idea Hotel Plus Savona for € 81 with breakfast. An excellent hotel, I highly recommend it. The hotel is located near the train station, it will take about 15 minutes on foot. Breakfast is not bad, you can satisfy your hunger quite well: cheese, sausage, cereals, scrambled eggs and fried ham, fruits, vegetables, rolls, tea, coffee, but the orange juice was just as horribly diluted with water.

We went to registration by 12 noon. It takes half an hour to walk to the port. By the way, the taxi fare is fixed, if you go from the port to the station - 15 euros.

We went to the city for a walk after 16 hours past the tower of Leon Pancaldo (Torre Leon Pancaldo). We didn't go far, only to the Priamar fortress (Fortezza del Priamar).

We walked around the territory and wanted to go upstairs, but the elevator did not work. Z was even a little upset that for the second time on this trip I had no luck to see the city from above.

And then we went back to the ship. I hope that we will not be in Savona for the last time, and therefore we will try to see more on our second visit.

Savona - start to charismatic Genoa

port in the center

the whole cruise day in Savona itself there is nothing to do

We stayed in Savona for 7.5 hours. The port is right in the city. From the gangway to the terminal and exit to the city 3 minutes on foot. Another 3 minutes and you are on the promenade.

Savona is a small coastal town, quite picturesque. Has its own attractions, but almost all passengers of the liners go to Genoa, which is 80 km away. There is a high-speed highway to Genoa, but the trouble is in traffic jams at the exit from Savona.

For some reason, Genoa is undeservedly forgotten by our tourists. When they talk about Italy, the first names come up: Rome, Venice ... Florence. Then: Verona, Naples, Pisa. And almost never - Genoa. And this is unfair. After all, Genoa is not inferior to other famous cities in Italy.

Genoa is not accustomed to lagging behind its brilliant rivals at sea and on land in anything. So, she fiercely contested the title of mistress of the seas from Venice, and from Florence - the title of the main money bag of Europe. And if Venice was called the Most Serene (La Serenissima), and Florence - the Most Holy (La Santissima), then Genoa received an equally magnificent nickname - Magnificent (La Superba). And not without reason - without her knowledge, for several centuries, no one could poke his nose into a good half of the Mediterranean. The wealth of local bankers and entrepreneurs was legendary.

In short, you have to go to Genoa! The best and cheapest way to get to Genoa, as it turns out, is a 29 € boat excursion called "Genova on your own". So we did, ordered tickets, but for some reason the excursion was canceled at the last moment. It was assumed that the bus from the ship would take you to the center of Genoa, and then everyone would choose their own way around the city. Probably, I would have to look for a Hop-on Hop-off tourist bus. In fact, it was a transfer to Genoa and back.

Other remaining 2 options:

Train (1 hour on the way) + taxi from the station to the waterfront (15 euros one way for 10 minutes). Trains run frequently. From the railway station in Genoa, you can take a tourist bus (1.5 hours per circle, without leaving). Didn't check the price of the tour bus. A bit troublesome. Our companions, who visited Genoa, noted the long passages from the railway station in both Savona and Genoa. Also, the confusion with exits in Genoa.

Option number 2 - taxi to Genoa. Travel time is about 1 hour. A taxi meets right at the terminal, and for 150 euros for four people it is taken not only to bring you, but also to drive for 2-2.5 hours in Genoa itself. For an additional hour in Genoa (in excess of 2.5 previously agreed), the driver asks for another 50, but here you can agree.

The only problem is that taxi drivers from Savona are not very versed in the sights of Genoa. They bring them to the Aquarium and explain that this is the center. Go to the Aquarium, or go up the vertical streets to the squares. The aquarium is really worth a visit, but it will probably take two hours. You will spend another half hour at the nearby fish market and you will not see anything worthwhile in Genoa. Therefore, it is necessary to study in advance the main objects of Genoa, which are of interest and which cannot be missed.

Make a taxi ride on them. They have the right to visit many places. Let him work out his money. For obedience and diligence, we threw a ten on our driver. Here's how we managed to embrace the immensity:

The first stop is Piazza de Ferrari. This is the main square of old Genoa. We take a photo at the fountain, see all the palaces, and most importantly - don't miss Palazzo Ducale. Next to it we pass through Piazza Matteoti and via S. Lorenzo to the Cathedral of San Lorenzo. We examine it.

We return to the car and ask the taxi driver to drive you past Porta Soprana - this is a beautiful medieval gate in the Barbarossa wall. There is also a house-museum of Columbus, he was also a Genoese. Alas, we are limited to viewing through the window. For everything about everything, 30-40 minutes around-run.

The second stop is near via Garibaldi. A street entirely surrounded by the Pallazi del Rolli palaces. 10-15 minutes for jogging and inspection. Externally, we examined the beautiful palaces Palazzo Bianco, Palazzo Rossi with an outstanding collection of paintings and imposing courtyards. Alas, we did not have time to view museums.

The third stop is Spinata di Castelleto, a panoramic platform overlooking the whole of Genoa. 5-10 minutes on the photo and inspection. Everything. We did it in an hour and a half. We go down to the Aquarium and Porto Antico. This is the fourth stop.

It is up to you to visit or not to visit the Aquarium (the second largest in the world). At least an hour should be spent on it. Or you can safely dash along the embankment to the fish market, taste seafood and wine, and head back. Pay attention to the La Lanterna lighthouse, which is the symbol of Genoa. This is the oldest (from the 12th century) active lighthouse in the world.

We left Savona at 10, and at 15-00 we were already at the gangway of our liner. There was still an hour left for Savona itself.

By the way, on Android you can download Genova official Guide with a map.

Savona is a cozy southern corner located on the shores of the gentle Ligurian Sea. This city is famous for its history, enchants travelers visiting it with narrow medieval streets and hot sun. It seems to be the earthly embodiment of peace and quiet, and not least the fact that Savona rarely shines on the pages of advertising travel brochures plays a role in this. But in vain.

View of the city and the observation tower of Leon Pankaldo, which opens from cruise ships moored in Savona

After all, it is here that you can find fresh air, friendly smiles on the faces of local residents, willingly explaining to tourists what is what, and, of course, a large number of attractions that will not be difficult to reach, because the port is located in the city center.

So, a whistle is heard, announcing that the ship has arrived at the port, let's go ashore ... Welcome to Savona! The city meets with true Italian hospitality - fresh wind and clear sun. It is difficult to find cloudy weather here: the local sky pleases with the absence of clouds for most of the year. From here you can already see the main attraction of Savona - the Genoese fortress Fortezza del Priamar. Once the main defense of the city from the sea, now this majestic and even somewhat gloomy building rises above the houses, attracting the attention of tourists.

Religious heritage

But we will go to the fortress a little later. We turn onto the small street Piazza del Brandale and head towards the first attraction on our way - the Sistine Chapel. It was erected in the distant 15th century by order of Pope Sixtus IV, the very one who ordered the foundation of the church of the same name in the Vatican. They were built almost at the same time, but if the metropolitan version in a single moment became the pilgrim center of the entire Catholic world, the historical path of the Savona chapel turned out to be less triumphant. It was erected as a tomb for the noble and powerful Italian family della Rovere, of which Sixtus IV was descended.

Behind the discreet whitewashed walls, there is a luxurious hall, decorated with rich stucco and frescoes. Gilded wood carvings, marble tombstones, an ancient mechanical organ - this place is impressive and enchanting at first sight.

Organ in the Sistine Chapel in Savona

The Savona Sistine Chapel is adjacent to the Cathedral. If you wish, you can also drop by the Diocesan Museum - a small treasury museum that has collected a rich collection of all kinds of church relics.

Great canvases

And in the neighboring streets, a 3-minute walk from the cathedral, there is the city's Pinacoteca - Pinacoteca Civica. To get into it, you will have to go around a small cafe and look into the arch, where the entrance to the museum is hidden. It is not easy to go around all the 22 exhibition halls. But it is worth it, since the works of art stored here are real masterpieces, the creations of the hands of the masters of Northern Italy. Here you can also buy memorable souvenirs.

Snack time!

Having seen enough paintings, painted ceramics and other artistic values, we go out into the street. Legs lead us along a straight street, burying right into the Pinakothek. And for good reason, because it is here, on the Vico dei Crema, that you can find perhaps the most authentic café in all of Savona. It is called Fette Panissa Via Pia, and you won't find a better snack. Sitting here, however, will not succeed, but this is not scary - for the sake of a delicious panissa, one of the most ancient Ligurian dishes, you can be patient. The dexterous hands of an elderly Italian woman will cut the dough mixed from chickpea into the thinnest slices, fry them right in front of your eyes and generously fill a paper bag with them. Romance! A rare chance to feel like a true Italian, at least for a few minutes touching the culinary heritage of this great country.

Panissa - Ligurian chickpea flour appetizer

By the sea

After having a bite to eat and having washed down the panissa with cool drinks, you can return to the embankment. Stand a little on the shore, breathe deeply the salty sea air, admire the ships arriving at the port, exposing your face to the rays of the bright southern sun - and back to the historic part of the city!

You won't have to walk for a long time, a couple of steps from the embankment there is a symbol of the city, the image of which is often found on magnets and postcards in Savona - the observation tower of Leon Pancaldo or, in Italian, Torre Leon Pancaldo. This is all that remains of the fortress wall that once stood on the seashore. It is enough to look at the turret, made of solid sand-colored blocks, to literally feel the breath of centuries. Named in honor of Magellan's assistant who was born in this city, it reminds us of the heyday of navigation, when great discoveries were made by great people, when the world seemed truly endless, and only a very brave person could break into a journey.

Lookout tower of Leon Pancaldo in Savona

By the way, they say that it was in Savona that Christopher Columbus, the legendary discoverer of America, spent his youth. Even the address is given - Via Belvedere 7. Not the very center of the city, rather, its outskirts. It will hardly be possible to get there on foot - this house is separated by as much as 4 kilometers from the port. Yes, and no one will let inside, now it is just a residential building, one of many. Nevertheless, this place looks very attractive: here the beauty of the Italian land is revealed to the eyes of a casual observer in all its grandeur. The green caps of tree branches stretching to the sky, the wild coast strewn with huge stones, on which the sea waves break with hiss, the cries of free seagulls, flowers, fruits, the dazzling radiance of the sun, mountains towering in the distance - a fairy tale, and that's all.

Ancient fortress

However, let's return to our excursion. Most of it is already behind, only the main Savonian attraction remains - the Primar fortress. Along the coast we head straight to the destination. The entrance to the territory of the fortress is free, a wide stone bridge leads us under the arches of a heavy stone arch. It is worth going upstairs to enjoy the view of Savona from its main observation deck. Ancient cannons encountered along the way remind of the original purpose of the fortress - a city outpost, the first and main obstacle on the way of sea raiders, allowing civilians to live in peace, hiding behind its strong walls.

Primar Fortress in Savona

The inner courtyard houses an archaeological museum and an art gallery. It makes sense to look into the second only for those who are an ardent lover of this type of art. For everyone else, after visiting the Pinakothek, the collection is unlikely to be of particular interest. But the archaeological museum seems much more interesting.

Time relax

Having enjoyed the heritage of ancient culture, it's time to breathe more freely - our walk through the curious places of Savona has come to an end. You can sit on the seashore, take a fancy to a table in the café located here, or walk a little further to La Tana del Luppolo restaurant, recognized as the best in the city by Tripadvisor visitors. To do this, you will need to get off at Corso Giuseppe Mazzini and head further from the port. When you see a large supermarket on your left, turn left and exit onto Via Buscaglia 5r. True, one should take into account: now we are separated from the port by about 2 kilometers, and if time does not allow, it is better not to go so far and choose a place for dinner somewhere closer.

The path we have walked today is worthy of encouragement - we walked around the entire historical center of Savona, paying attention to the main attractions of the city. Of course, much has remained unnoticed - why not return somehow else? Moreover, Savona is the base port of the Costa Crociere, therefore it is often found on the routes of this cruise company.

And now, time is running out, it's time to return to the liner. Let's take a look around the city with a farewell glance, breathe in the evening coolness, taking with us as a souvenir not only a lot of impressions, but also the amazing atmosphere of Savona, its peaceful and calm grandeur, bearing the imprint of history. Until next time, Savona!
