Fill color in photoshop cs6. Getting Started in Photoshop - Quick Select and Fill

Filling a layer with color is a simple and popular operation in Photoshop. You may need to do this when you need a solid-colored background or to overlay some shade over the image - toning, for example, using a layer with yellow to make a sepia effect.

In order to make a layer completely one color, I counted 5 possible ways.

Ways to fill a layer with color

Method 1

Menu command Editing - Execute Fill(Fill) , or pressing a combination of hotkeys duplicating this command:

Hotkey combination: Shift + F5

A dialog box will open Fill... In it, in the dropdown Use choose Color... The color picker will open immediately. Decide on a color and click OK.

Method 2

Using the Alt + Backspace key combination, the layer is filled with the main color set on the tool palette -.

Method 3 Tool "Fill"

From the toolbar, select fill tool... Click on the layer and it will immediately be painted with the main color (see example above).

Fill works when there is nothing extra on the layer. Otherwise, the tool will paint over only certain areas.

I remember when I was just starting to learn Photoshop, I used this method. The bottom line is that you simply paint over the layer with a brush, like Tom Soeyre painted the fence.

All of the above methods have one common drawback - in cases where it is required, the layer filled with color will not grow. The part of the canvas that was added will be filled automatically with the background color.

Example. Initially, the layer was filled with yellow paint. After enlarging the canvas, a reddish color was added along the contour, in accordance with what was displayed on the background color indicator.

To prevent this, you need to use the following method.

Method 5 Fill layer

Run the command Layer - New Fill Layer(New Fill Layer) - Color. You can immediately click OK. After that, a palette for choosing a fill color will appear. Make a choice.

Good day to all, dear readers of my blog. How is your mood? Are you ready for work and defense? Fine. we have learned, but what if you need to paint over some area? Are we going to puff up to carefully paint over the area with a brush, trying not to touch the borders? Of course not.

One very interesting tool will help us to completely paint over an object in one click. Today I will tell you how to fill in Photoshop using the tool of the same name.

What exactly does the fill tool do in Photoshop? It's pretty simple. It paints the area you want with paint. But here you have to take into account various factors. In general, what am I telling you some bare theory? Let's look at a specific example.

So let's go!

Simple fill

In general, since the circle inside was completely white, and the background outside is also completely white, then the entire area will be filled until it meets an obstacle, for example, the third and fourth circles.

Now take another color of your choice and fill the area where the circle intersects. Only this area of intersection was painted over. But why? After all, we drew 2 different circles? Because we painted them on one layer, that's why they are considered to be a single whole. Now, if two circles were drawn on two layers, then it would be a different matter. One of the circles (on the active layer) would be painted over completely. But read about layers better.

I just noticed that I have these two circles with a filled red area in the center, they look like an eye with a red pupil))).

Painting with a pattern

By default, the tool fills with the color specified in the main color of the palette. But you can also paint over areas with a pattern. Let's try.

Tolerance

Many tools have such a property as tolerance. And everywhere this tolerance works in about the same way.

The smaller the tolerance, the smaller the color range of the painted area. Those. if tolerance 0 and you want to paint over with white on a blue-blue background, then only the shade on which you clicked initially will be filled, and of course all the exact same shades not deviating from the norm by a single gram. And if the tolerance is maximum ( 255 ), then the fill will paint over the entire canvas without exception.

Let's see an example, and then you yourself will experiment. We will take a square as a basis, which changes its color smoothly from yellow to white. Let's try to set different tolerance values and paint them black.

As you can see, the more access, the more it uses the range of colors that it considers native and the more colors and shades it paints. I hope you get the point. Got it? If not, ask. I will answer.

by the way

Finally, I want to tell you about one more point. Filling with color does not have to be any drawing. You can just flood the area.

To do this, select some area (I selected) and draw a selection on a white background.

Now I pick up the fill again and choose any color. The selection hasn't gone anywhere, which is great. Then fill in what is inside the selection outline in a way we already know. Hop! And you're done. Here is such a little trick.

Well, although these are not all properties, they will be quite enough for you. If you want to study Photoshop more thoroughly and in all details, as well as "swim" in it like a fish in water, then I highly recommend that you look through this video course... I've never seen a better one. If I had it before, then the study of this graphic editor would have been much easier for me. All in all, I highly recommend it.

Well, for today I am finishing our lesson, dear friends. I hope that the article was useful for you and I highly recommend subscribing to my blog updates, then you will not miss the release of new and useful articles, as well as various news and contests.

Good luck with your study. The main thing is not to phony). See you in the next tutorials. Bye Bye!

Best regards, Dmitry Kostin.

Welcome to the Start-Luck blog. Today we will continue our exploration of Photoshop. This topic will be of interest to photographers, designers, illustrators and anyone who wants to master a graphic package. We're going to talk about how to fill a layer with color.

I decided to pay attention to this, because I noticed that many beginners, and even those who have been working in graphics for a long time, pouring layers on it, spend more time on it than they should.

For example, artists sometimes just paint each layer with a brush with their own color. But you must admit, when you need several options for a substrate or background for a photo, you do not want to spend hours just looking for a background color.

And if we take into account that the contours in the photo are very difficult to accurately trace with a brush, then this tool is clearly not suitable for us. I will share with you the way I use it. It seems to me to be optimal, suitable for both simple images and complex photographs.

By the way, if you are a beginner web designer, then I highly recommend paying attention to the resource netology.ru ... This university has a course " Adobe Photoshop: The Basics For A Web Designer ". Why it is good: training is conducted by practicing experts who know everything about. Teaching is divided into theory and practice, lectures are held in the afternoon. This is especially useful if you work and study. The process of submitting knowledge is divided into stages, from the beginning to the creation of a website layout.

In a short period of study, you will gain skills to help you. If you were to study on your own, the first fruits of your labor would appear much later. I am a result-oriented person. The blurry prospects that I will someday learn something do not please me. I suppose you will too, and the courses will help you achieve your ultimate goal in a short time. You will be able to work and get paid for it.

Tools for the job

We have moved a little away from the topic, and now I propose to return to it. As always, my work is carried out in the CC version of the program. You can work with the version that you have. There won't be much difference in the interface, so there shouldn't be any difficulties.

For work, I need a picture, it is better to choose the one on which there will be an image of a simple form. For the first time, a picture with a ball is fine. If you want another object with which it is more pleasant for you to work.

I will paint the background white in hot pink. I think the blue and white ball will stand out well against such a background. Again, you are free to choose your favorite color and not limit yourself in anything. Open up our picture in Photoshop, use the Quick Selection tool on the side panel, and select the object.

Highlighted - excellent! After that, in the top line, select the selection. In the drop-down menu, look for "Refine Edge".

We've got a window, we need it.

Now we carefully look at the screenshot and do everything as indicated on it. Then we output to.

As a result, we see the ball on a transparent layer. But you cannot fill it in yet. Create a new layer for the fill.

Painting

And now we can go directly to the fill. Take the scoop ("Fill") on the toolbar, choose a color. With us, as you remember pink, you can fill it with black or white, only if you fill it with white, the result will not differ from the source in any way.

The settings panel should look like this. The Shift + Backspace keyboard shortcut will help you call the fill settings.

Click on the "fill" on a new transparent layer. We get the result we needed.

In addition to everything that I have described, there is also. The tool is in the panel on the left, next to the fill. The principle of operation is the same as with simple fill. Only a gradient allows you to create beautiful, interesting color transitions. Which makes the colored layer more complex and rich.

In the early stages of ball selection, you could use the "" tool. In the right menu with layers, there is a camera icon at the bottom. This is the mask. You could click on it, and then paint over the ball with a brush. After that, again click on the mask icon, return to normal mode, our ball is selected.

Graphics are important!

If you stumbled upon my article, you are probably interested in graphics. Everyone uses it in different areas. It is impossible to deny the influence of a beautiful picture on a person. Everything that we see, you divide into beautiful and ugly. This is how human perception works. For any of your business to work, a beautiful and high-quality presentation is important. This is very important in internet marketing.

Therefore, I advise everyone to learn the basics of digital graphics. You will bring up excellent taste in yourself, learn to see the beautiful, and most importantly, you will learn how to create graphic designs that will work. Any activity has its own laws. There are a lot of them in web design too: layout, color, tone and proportions. All this affects our perception, something attracts, and something repels. Study these laws and let them work for you.

I know many websites that have great business ideas. But they have a repulsive design, it is faded, uncomfortable and does not fulfill its primary functions at all. And if you work on it, even just choosing the right background (I recommend reading it -), the information will be striking, and the user will not miss what this resource has to offer.

On this I come to an end and say goodbye to you. To develop further, subscribe to my blog and tell your friends about it.

I wish you success in any endeavors!

Hello readers.

After reading this article, you will know what a fill is in Photoshop and how to apply it. This will help you erase unnecessary objects from images, create new shapes, frames, etc. on them. Moreover, this can be done either with one color or with a pattern, gradient or shade of the existing background. Let's take a closer look at the main methods.

Paint Bucket tool

Let's start the training with a tool specially created for our purpose with the appropriate name.

It occupies one cell with another - "Gradient", which we will talk about later.

Therefore, if you did not find the first one at once, click on the arrow next to the second or right-click on it.

This tool is used to fill with one color or patterns. How to work with him?

  • Open the image and duplicate the layer using the hotkeys Ctrl + J.

Do you know how to highlight an area? Use the Rectangle or Magnetic Lasso tools for this.

  • At the bottom of the toolbar there are 2 squares one after the other. The first one means the main color. Click on it to select the one you need.
  • Bring the bucket to the selected area and click once with the left mouse button. It will be filled with the selected color. Want to fill part of the image with a pattern? A great idea that comes true like this:
  • The top panel, under the main Photoshop menu, contains the settings for the selected tool. Find a small window with an ornament. Click on the arrow next to it and select the one you like.

  • To change the color of the original picture to a pattern, in the same way as in the previous case, click with the cursor with a bucket on the selected area.

Gradient tool

You already know where he is. Activate it and pay attention to the settings at the top:

Click on the arrow next to the long gradient strip. A small window will drop out where you can select the color and type of the tool.

  • Several icons next to it determine its shape: it can be radial, angular, linear, diamond-shaped, etc.
  • Try different effects from the Mode section, including fade out, soft light, base fade, and more.
  • Do you want the original image to be visible under the gradient? Play with opacity.

To apply the tool to a selected area, hold down the left mouse button on one of its edges and drag from the opposite side.

Fill or brush?

Need to remove an object from an image as if it were never there? In this case, the fill colors suggested by the program will not work, since the original background should remain. To solve this problem, you can go in two ways: use the Spot Healing Brush or fill it with content.

I wrote about how to do this in this post:

The first option should be used when the extra object in the photo is far from objects that are different in structure and color, and it is surrounded by many solid pixels, which will give a sample of the shade of a spot brush.

By the way, you will also find it among other tools - it looks like a plaster. To remove an unnecessary area, simply click on it with a large brush without first selecting the object.

Here's what happened before:

Here's what happened after clicking OK:

Are there any unpainted spots left? Correct them with a small diameter Spot Healing Brush.

Outline

Do you want to frame your photo? Photoshop offers a simple option:

  • Circle the photo with a "rectangle", slightly stepping back from each side.
  • Go to the "Editing" tab and select the "Stroke" command.

  • In the window that appears, specify the desired color, width and blending mode.
  • Click OK.

Thus, the part of the image that remains behind the selection will be filled with color.

Inspiration to you, friends.

Come back to me for a new portion of useful knowledge on Photoshop and more.

Now let's look at the next group of tools.

Fill tools

Fill. Click on this tool and hold down the left mouse button, a selection menu will open: gradient and fill.

Here you can choose what you want.

Bucket - Fills the image (selection) with color or texture.

So, for filling we have the following parameters:

Fill - defines what to use as "paint": the foreground will fill with the foreground color, the pattern will fill with some pattern.

Pattern - a pattern to fill.

Mode - a way of blending pixels, there are many values and will be considered as needed.

Opacity - determines the degree of transparency of the fill.

Tolerance - The range of colors to fill.

Antialiasing checkbox means to soften the edges of the transition.

Let's try it in practice:

Take the fill tool (click on the bucket), move it inside the selection made in the previous step, and click with the mouse. Our selection will be colored in the foreground color (by default - black).

Now on the options bar select: Fill -> Pattern, Pattern -> any you like.

Move our bucket inside the selection again and click. Now it is filled with the template and looks like this:

Please note that in the templates window that opens, only a small part of them is presented. If you click on the arrow on the right, a menu will open, at the bottom of which other collections of templates are indicated. They can be added to the existing ones.

Gradient. Creates a fill with a smooth transition between two or more colors.

Consider the options panel:

If you click on the arrow on the right, a palette with gradient options will open, when you double-click in front of the arrow, the gradient editing window will open (here you can customize your gradient options).

Specifies the appearance of the gradient (from left to right — linear, radial, angular, reflected, diamond).

Reverse - a check mark indicates to geometrically reverse the gradient.

Dithering (depth - dither) - checkbox indicates dither to reduce segmentation.

Transparency - a checkmark indicates the use of transparency.

Let's try it in practice:

Create a new file, take the rectangular selection tool and stretch it in the form of a rectangle, then on the toolbar, click on the gradient icon, in the options bar, click on the arrow and select the gradient you like, to the right select the type of gradient (any).

Notice the first two squares in the gradient picker that opens. They use the colors you set as the foreground and background colors (colored squares at the bottom of the toolbar). The first gradient makes a smooth transition from the base color to the background, the second - from the base color to transparency.

Now move the mouse cursor to the middle of the left side of our selection, press the left mouse button and, without releasing it, extend the line to the middle of the right side (Fig. 1)
Now draw the gradient line diagonally (fig. 2)
And now from top to bottom (fig. 3)

See the difference and experiment with different gradients and their looks.

Saving an image

Our lesson is coming to an end, it remains only to learn how to preserve our masterpieces.

Click the File menu item, in the pop-up menu you will see the familiar Save As item and the new Save for Web item. Let's figure out which one is for what.

If you are working on an image and want to be able to change it in the future, then you should select the menu item - Save As

Where to save and what name to give is your own business, but the format will be * .PSD; *. PDD. It is in this format that all your settings are saved (we do not have them yet, but they will appear later). Thus, not the whole picture is saved, but its parts are saved, each of which you can change whenever you want.

If your image is ready, then select the menu item - Save for Web (Save for Web). The image will be saved optimized for the Internet (i.e. with the best quality / file size combination). The opened save window should be considered in more detail:

The four tabs at the top offer you a look at the options for the image:

Original - the image as it is. Typically large file size not valid for web.
Optimized - the optimal ratio of quality and file size from the point of view of the program.
2-up, 4-up - respectively two and four options for the image side by side, at the bottom of each is the size. You can choose the best one according to your opinion.

Additional settings are set in the upper right corner of this window:

Here you can select the format of the saved image. General recommendations - use JPEG and PNG formats for photographs with subtle realistic color transitions, GIF format - for high-contrast, low-color drawings. By the way, all pictures on this page are saved in GIF format.

If you are using the tabs discussed above, then it is not necessary to customize this part of the window, at least at this stage.

So, choose the most optimal image in your opinion and click on the Save button. The already familiar save window will open, where you should specify the Folder (where to save) and the File name, the rest will already be indicated, click on Save again. The image for the web is ready.

This concludes the first lesson. You learned how to create a new file, select areas and fill them in different ways (color, pattern and gradient), and save images in the desired format.

To reinforce these skills, experiment (create differently shaped areas and fill them in different ways).

In the next lesson, you will learn how to work with text and get acquainted with the basic concept of the program - layers.
