Setting up system recovery

By default, the system protection feature is disabled in the operating system and therefore it is not possible to create a restore point. To create a restore point, you need to enable the system protection function, for this you need to open the System Properties window on the System protection tab. Actually, there you can not only enable or disable system protection, but also create or delete restore points, and also start system restore.

Use the + R dialog to enter systempropertiesprotection or copy and paste:

This will open the System Properties window on the System Protection tab. Restore points are created for all drives for which system protection is enabled. For example, if protection is disabled for the system drive C, you can enable it by selecting this drive and clicking the Configure... button.

After that select Enable system protection and specify the amount of space you would like to set aside for creating restore points. The more space, the more points can be stored, and as the space fills up, old restore points will be deleted automatically. After making changes, click OK

In order to create a system restore point, in the System Properties window, on the System Protection tab, click the Create…

In the next window, enter a description for the restore point you are creating.

You can enter any text in this field. The date and time that this restore point was created will be added automatically.

After entering the description, click the Create button

How to delete restore points

Create restore points

Points can be created automatically and manually (on request). As a rule, they are automatically created when drivers and programs are installed. When installing drivers and programs, they themselves can inform the system about the need to save the current state.

To create manually, open the search bar and type "Create a restore point". The System Protection window opens. Click the "Create" button. In the window that opens, you can give it any name. After entering the name, a point will be created and all the necessary system files that are needed to roll back in case of failure will be fixed in it.

How to restore the system using a restore point?

To use the function, you need to enter the advanced download options.

To do this, open the Start menu, click on the gear icon (Settings), go to the "Update and Security" - "Recovery" tab. Find the "Advanced Startup" item and click on the "Run Now" button.

A blue screen will open with additional settings. Select Troubleshooting - Advanced Options - System Restore.

A window will be displayed where it is possible to select the restore point that we want to use before reverting to an earlier state.

If Windows 10 won't start, then we have two options.

The first is to use a boot disk or flash drive with the Windows 10 installer. After selecting the language in the installer, a window will appear that will allow you to proceed to install Windows using the Install button or the recovery menu.

Click on "System Restore", select the "Diagnostics" section and in Advanced Options select the first item, as shown in the figure.

If there is no bootable USB flash drive, then you can switch to the advanced boot options mode in another way. Press F11 after turning on the computer and the first screen appears. Unfortunately, this method does not always work, it depends on the BIOS / UEFI.

If both options did not work, then it remains on another computer to download Windows 10 from the Microsoft website using the Media Creation Tool utility. Create a bootable DVD or flash drive with the installer and try to restore the non-working computer.

How to restore Windows 10 to a restore point
