Login and display name

When registering an account on Skype, each user is assigned 2 nicknames: login and display name. Login is the nickname that is specified during registration. It is used in 2 cases:

when adding you to the contact list.

And the displayed username is the nickname that is visible to your friends on Skype.

By default, the display name is exactly the same as the login.

Although it has one huge advantage: this name can be changed. But the question arises: how to find out your login and where exactly are the login and display name visible? It's quite easy to understand.

How to find out your Skype login?

As soon as you log into the program, the main Skype window will open. A small program logo will be drawn at the very top, the word “Skype™” will be written, and login will be indicated after it. This is the same login that was specified during registration. It is this nickname that you need to provide to your friends so that they can find you in the Skype database and add you to their contact list.

Just below is the menu bar, and even lower is the program icon (usually green) and another nickname. This is already the user's display name. When you first log in to Skype, these two nicknames are completely the same, but the second one can be changed at any time.

So, since the login in Skype cannot be changed, you can make sure that the user sees it as little as possible (since he doesn’t like it so much). All you need to do is configure the program so that authorization occurs automatically, i.e. the user does not need to enter his Skype every time. To do this you need to do the following:

Open the authorization window in Skype (if the user is already logged in, you should log out of your account by selecting “Skype - Logout” in the menu bar).

And that is not all. In addition to the fact that the user can change his display name, his friends from the contact list can do the same. For example, one friend didn’t like your nickname and decided to simply sign you with your real name (perhaps it’s more convenient for him that way). As a rule, you may not know about this and will rack your brain in vain over how to change your login. But even if you change your display name, your friend's nickname will not change. You will be signed in exactly the same way as you were signed previously. Therefore, you should not worry so much about your unsuccessful login, especially if you have been using your account for quite a long time. All your friends have already seen this login and are used to it. The one who wanted to, renamed you to a name more convenient for themselves, i.e. they may not care.

If your case is special and changing your display name is not suitable, then the only way left is to register a new account.

How do I change my email address?

Sometimes it happens that access to the mailbox to which the Skype account was registered was lost. For example, the email was hacked, or the user simply forgot the password. Since you can easily access someone else’s Skype account using e-mail, it is advisable to change your email address to another one. To do this, select “Skype - Personal Data - Edit” in the menu bar, and then click on the “Manage” link. The Skype website will open where you can change your email. You also need to change your password (by clicking “Skype - Change Password” in the menu bar).

Previously, when registering, the user assigned himself a login - he simply made it up and, if such a name was not taken by anyone, he received it for his use. It could only consist of English letters, numbers and some symbols.

If this is your name, it will be written at the top of the window (both in the program and in the browser version).

You can also find it out by editing your page, where the display name changes.

But now logins as such have been canceled and registration has been made by email address or phone number. It turns out that if a person entered an email address during registration, then it will be his unique identifier in the system.

So, there are three types of logins on Skype:

Alphanumeric (for example, ya-artur88)
As an email address
Phone number

Whatever login you have, you can only change it if you register again.

But then the system will create a name for you automatically and it will most likely not be very nice.

And you also need to take into account that when receiving a new name, it will be “empty”. That is, there will not be a single contact, not a single correspondence.

To add your interlocutors from the old Skype, you will need to make a backup copy, then restore it in the new registration. Plus, send a request to each contact and wait for its confirmation. And it will not be possible to restore correspondence at all.

Back up your contacts.

Restore your contacts from backup.
Send each of them a request to add personal information.

A backup copy is a file through which you can restore all your contacts. It can only be done using the program; it cannot be accessed through the browser version.

After this, all your interlocutors will be added to the list. But if you transfer contacts from one login to another in this way, then next to each of them there will be an icon with a question mark. This means that you will not be able to communicate with any of them - you will need to send a request and wait for confirmation.

To do this, right-click on each contact and select “Request contact information again” from the menu.

The program will offer to send a standard request, but it is better to type something instead that will help identify you.
