VPN for browsers on Android and PC: Download and enable. VPN Extensions Conflict in Google Chrome Browser Vpn Google Extension

Private virtual networks are becoming more and more popular every day. Their functionality is used by tens of thousands of users: from companies or organizations that want to provide functionality for their remote workers, or users who are trying to bypass regional restrictions.

More recently, Opera decided to provide all its users with a free VPN inside the browser. If you are a Google Chrome user, you will probably also want to use something similar in your favorite browser.

There are tons of paid VPN options online, but there are also some really great free options for Chrome users to choose from. In this article, we'll walk you through six of the best VPN solutions for the Google Chrome browser.

Note: If you are using a VPN hoping to gain access to Netflix or BBC iPlayer, then you need to warn that these services and many others block access for VPN addresses.

DotVPN

DotVPN has been around since 2014 and continues to gain momentum. The service already has over 800,000 users according to the Chrome Web Store. It has over 6,500 user reviews, which add up to a four-star rating.

  • Unlimited bandwidth.
  • Twelve virtual locations (Canada, Germany, France, Japan, Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Russia, United States of America, England.
  • Unlimited switching between locations.

The developers also tried to provide improved protection, as this service uses 4096-bit key encryption, which is twice as good as modern banking standards.

ZenMate VPN

ZenMate VPN markets itself as a “cyber security solution”. They have at their disposal a network of highly secure proxy servers that encrypt your information and protect you from malicious sites.

ZenMate VPN service can be roughly divided into three components: Internet privacy, Wi-Fi protection and unlimited Internet access. Your privacy will keep trackers of banner ads, web analytics and social networks away from you while you surf the net. On the Wi-Fi side, you get multiple layers of protection when you're on unsecured public networks. Finally, with unlimited internet access, you can bypass geo-blocking.

ZenMate VPN also provides premium services that improve speed, add additional locations, and provide 24/7 support. Available at $ 8 per month. So if you want to get the most out of this service, then be prepared to pay a relatively small amount.

Hotspot shield

Hotspot Shield is a relatively new player on the field. Immediately, it should be pointed out that this resource is operated by Anchor Free, which is considered the most reliable company in the industry. Fun Facts: Anchor Free has over 10 years of experience with over 400 million downloads through various apps, and has over 20 million active users in 190 countries.

Hotspot Shield services are free and unlimited, and there is also a version for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, OS X and Windows. As you can see, there is a fairly wide range of platforms, which is good news.

Just like ZenMate VPN, this service has a premium subscription that starts at $ 2.08 and up, depending on the length of the subscription.

CyberGhost VPN

CyberGhost VPN is another provider that puts more emphasis on privacy and security than geo-blocking. According to their website, the service is responsible for blocking nearly 150 million ad units, 200,000 malicious websites, and 260 million attempts to track user activity.

Its best features include:

  • Incredibly easy to use: just one click on the on / off button.
  • Protection against hackers, cyber fraud, bank theft and email fraud.
  • Anonymous and ad-free web surfing.
  • Fight against geo-blocking around the world.
  • Protection from sites with malicious content.
  • Data compression for mobile hotspots.
  • Forced HTTP connections where possible.

The premium account is available for $ 3.79 per month.

Browsec VPN

Browsec VPN claims to be an improved counterpart to ZenMate, Stealthy and Hola. Its main advantages are allowing its users to access any site from anywhere in the world, improving the online privacy of users and protecting their personal data from various offenders.

This service takes a big step towards unblocking content from geo-blocking, but instead of opening sites like the BBC or Netflix, it unblocks Spotify, Pandora and SoundCloud, which are completely blocked in some regions.

TunnelBear VPN

Of all the services reviewed in our article, TunnelBear VPN is one of the best. Seventeen thousand reviews, which add up to a five-star rating. Instead of just being a VPN, this service actually encrypts a proxy.

TunnelBear has been around for years and has made a name for itself as a great product for Windows and Mac. If you've been at least a little interested in the VPN topic, then you've definitely heard of TunnelBear at least out of the way.

There is one big difference between the Chrome extension and the TunnelBear app you install - the Chrome extension only encrypts your browser traffic, while the TunnelBear app encrypts 100 percent of your data.

TunnelBear provides users with the fastest VPN speeds of any other VPN on our list, and its servers are available in 20 countries around the world.

Chromebook users can connect to a private network remotely (for example, at school or work) using a VPN connection.

Note. If you're having trouble setting up a VPN on your work or school Chromebook, ask your administrator for help.

Restrictions. Chromebooks do not support IKEv2, XAUTH, or non-L2TP IPsec.

How to create a connection

How to connect to a VPN

Split and full tunneling

Typically, full tunneling is used for VPNs. In this case, all traffic from Chrome windows and Chrome and Android apps goes through the VPN connection. With split tunneling, some sites are accessed through the physical network connection of the Chromebook. This configuration is suitable in the following cases:

  • If the VPN assumes access only to internal sites.
  • When connecting to a VPN, you need to interact with devices from your local network, such as printers.

Split tunneling can be configured in many VPN apps for Chrome and Android, as well as the built-in OpenVPN client. To do this,

A VPN is the best way to bypass the blocking of sites that your ISP has blocked. You can also hide information about yourself, change the IP address and transfer data in encrypted form. But for ordinary users, VPN is primarily the ability to visit sites that have been blocked and inaccessible in a particular country.

I came across this in my own experience. I tested various VPN extensions (add-ons) for the four most popular browsers: Opera, Google Chrome, Yandex Browser and Firefox. I decided to share this useful information with you. Below we will look at the best (in my opinion), free (though not all) VPN add-ons for browsers. I will also show you how to find and install them in each browser. After installing and activating these extensions, you will be able to visit blocked sites, social networks (VKontakte, Odnoklassniki) and other resources.

A free VPN can't be good quality. It is slow and unstable. Unfortunately this is the case. Especially in our time, when a heavy load has fallen on these free services. For permanent use, a free VPN is not suitable. I think you have already seen this.

Better, of course, to buy some kind of paid VPN.

A few words about what a VPN (Virtual Private Network) is and how it works. This is a virtual private network. If this does not mean anything to you, now I will try to explain it in simple language. There are many VPN services, both free and paid. Using some kind of VPN service (configured via browser extension, program for PC, Android, iOS), all our traffic goes through the server of this service. There can be a lot of such servers, in each country and several pieces (it all depends on the specific VPN service).

We get the IP address of the server through which we connect. This allows us to go to blocked sites, since we change our location on the network, connecting through a server installed in another country (where certain sites are not blocked)... All data that we transmit or receive is encrypted. Which gives us additional protection, especially when connecting through open Wi-Fi networks.

Sometimes, the security of using a VPN can be deceiving. Since all our traffic goes through the servers of some company, there is always a risk that this company will use the information that passes through its servers. Therefore, I advise you to use only the time-tested and most popular VPN browser extensions. I will talk about these in this article.

It's simple: if in your country the provider has blocked access to some sites (for example, as now in Ukraine VKontakte, Odnoklassniki, Yandex and Mail.ru are blocked), then we just install the VPN add-on in our browser, turn it on and we can go to the sites to which we have restricted access.

Free VPN for Opera Browser

First of all, I'll tell you about the solution for the Opera browser. For the reason that I myself use this browser, and in this regard it is the best. Why? But because Opera does not need to install any third-party extensions to visit blocked sites. Opera has its own built-in free VPN that works just fine!

All we need is to install the latest browser version. Then go to "Menu" - "Settings", to the "Security" tab, and check the box next to "Enable VPN".

All that remains is to turn on the VPN, and you can go to the sites that your Internet provider has blocked for you.

You can change the virtual location. But I advise you to leave the "Optimal location".

The developers of the Opera browser are certainly great. Not only is the service free, but also with unlimited traffic and speed. And it is very convenient to use it. And most importantly, a company like Opera can be trusted. Anyway, it's better than some VPN services that were created a couple of days ago.

If you use the Opera browser, then the issue of bypassing the blocking of sites for you, I think, is solved.

Advice! If it is not very important for you which browser to use, then you can install Opera and visit the necessary sites through its VPN. In order not to search and install third-party extensions in other browsers.

There are many different VPN extensions for the Google Chrome browser. They can be found and installed from the official store. Let me first show you how extensions are installed in the Chrome browser, and then I'll show you a few specific extensions that I personally tested in my work.

Open the menu, go to "More Tools" and select "Extensions". Then, at the bottom, click on "More extensions".

A new tab will open with a store of various add-ons for the Chrome browser. You can simply search for a VPN, and we will receive a list of required extensions.

It is enough to click on the "Install" button, and the extension will be installed in the browser. Then, its icon will appear next to the "Menu" button.

Some VPN extensions for Chrome:

I tried many different ones. Each has its drawbacks. In any case, the download speed may slow down.

Installing VPN in Yandex Browser

First, update your browser to the latest version. In Yandex Browser, you can install add-ons, among which there are VPN services.

To install an add-on, open the menu, then select "Add-ons". Scroll down the page and click on the "Directory of extensions for Yandex Browser" button.

In the search we enter "vpn". A list of the add-ons we need will appear.

To install what you need, select it and click on the "Add to Yandex Browser" button. I recommend trying: Hola Better Internet, ZenMate VPN, TunnelBear, DotVPN - better than VPN. After installation, the extension icon will appear near the address bar (on the right). Most likely, you will need to run the VPN in the add-on settings.

Installing friGate in Yandex Browser

I think this is the best solution. Everything works well, and it is possible to open through VPN only some sites that are blocked. You can create lists and add your sites there. Many blocked sites are added by default. Installing friGate as described above will not work. You need to download the extension file and install it.

friGate can be installed and configured in other browsers: Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Chrome.

VPN add-ons for Mozilla Firefox browser

You can also install the required extension in the Mozilla Firefox browser. Or configure friGate, which I wrote about above (link is also above).

We go to "Menu" - "Add-ons".

On the extension tab, in the search bar, write "vpn", or the name of a specific extension.

You can go to the full list of extensions by clicking on the corresponding link below.

I have checked Hotspot Shield Free VPN Proxy, Hoxx VPN Proxy, ZenMate Security and Privacy & Unblock VPN.

Hotspot Shield works right after booting and turning on. Registration is required for Hoxx and ZenMate.

After installing VPN, blocked sites will open in Mozilla Firefox. If you don't like the download speed, or the stability of the work, you can try another add-on.

Afterword

Don't get carried away with installing everything. Remember, this may not be safe! Look at the rating, reviews, the number of installations of the extension.

Of the free solutions, I liked the built-in VPN in the Opera browser, and friGate, which can be installed in almost every browser.

Whichever VPN service you use, this has its disadvantages and inconveniences. You need to follow him (enable or disable), the speed may also drop, ping. It is possible that the server through which you are connecting is not excluded.

Don't forget to write comments. Share your advice, opinion, and ask questions.

We figured out the wording, let's move on to the review, in which there will be no winners and losers, but there will be just good extensions.

Browsec VPN for Google Chrome - installation and configuration

Installation in a browser does not require special permissions, which means that "Freegate" will not be annoying with advertisements or perform extraneous actions without our knowledge.

An unusual decision of the developers was to abandon the usual button connection to the server. Access through VPN is carried out exclusively to the sites included in the list, which can be configured by right-clicking on the extension icon.

Before using, create your own list and include the most visited Internet resources.

With the correct sequence of actions, in the right edge of the browser window, you will see an icon with information about a successful connection.

To change the server, you must click on the flag image.

Frigate successfully passed the baud rate test, outperforming many rivals.

Final Comparison Table

The purpose of the review was not to identify the best offers on the market, I wanted to show the main points for choosing a solution that suits your needs. Some extensions that showed disastrous results in measuring data transfer rates may show opposite results in paid versions.

When compiling the final table and the "distribution" of places, not only dry numbers were taken into account, but also my subjective opinion about the convenience of this or that extension.

Also, it is worth noting that during the measurements the extensions could have "temporary" technical difficulties, due to which they showed poor results.

And do not forget about an excellent replacement for extensions, albeit a paid one, but reliable -.

Sometimes a regular user cannot access the desired site due to locks imposed directly by the creators of the resource or the Internet provider with whom the user has entered into an agreement. In most cases, this raises questions about how to work around such restrictions. Perhaps this is by changing your IP address through special means. Today we want to talk about how this process is carried out in a browser known throughout the world.

Almost all extensions or anonymizing sites existing at the current moment of time operate using approximately the same technology, but conquer the audience by providing unique functions. It is about all this that will be discussed further, which will help you choose exactly the tool that will satisfy absolutely all your needs. Let's start with add-ons installed in the web browser, and then we'll talk about anonymizers.

Option 1: Extensions

Web browser extensions are the most popular method to bypass web resource blocking. Our site has already collected many review articles that are devoted to the analysis of well-known VPN tools. We suggest that you study these materials in more detail to learn about all the advantages and disadvantages of these add-ons, as well as download them from the Google Webstore.

Many extensions that provide VPN or Proxy functionality are free, but subject to certain restrictions. For example, immediately after installation, you can choose one of three or four locations to change the address, and the rest of the options will be available only after purchasing a premium account. Accordingly, the speed on such paid servers rises several times due to low workload and other factors. Browsec belongs to the list of similar tools. Its principle of operation is that the user is required to press only one button, having previously selected a location, in order to immediately start the process of traffic redirection. Read more about this solution in a separate review on our website by clicking on the link below.

The developers of the add-on called friGate have created their own database of sites that can be blocked from certain users. This allows the user to work on non-blocked web services without the involvement of a VPN, and when opening web resources with limited access, it will be activated automatically. In the settings of this tool there are several interesting parameters that allow you to improve anonymity, for example, you can enter your proxies or enable enhanced bypass by activating the function "Anonymity"... You can enable the extension to work on any site, even if it works fine using the native IP address.

Additionally, an addition from the same developers called FriGate UA should be noted. Its name already suggests that it is aimed at people using the services of Ukrainian Internet providers. This tool is best suited in cases where you often go to the sites Yandex, Mail.ru, have profiles on the social network VKontakte or Odnoklassniki. FriGate UA provides a standard traffic encryption algorithm, and the connection speed practically does not decrease when switching to blocked web resources.

ZenMate is another classic extension that provides IP spoofing while active. The main difference between this tool and those discussed above is the need to create a profile during registration. This will not only allow you to restore the pre-selected parameters each time you log into the account, but also come in handy in cases where the user wants to purchase a premium subscription for additional options. If there is an advanced paid version, then the free one has certain limitations. This includes only a small list of available servers, which very often affects the connection speed. We recommend using ZenMate for those who are thinking about purchasing premium versions in the future, because only then will the use of a VPN become truly comfortable.

Runet blocking bypass

We recommend that you pay special attention to the "Bypass Runet Blocks" add-on for a user from the Russian Federation, since this application was created specifically to bypass the locks that were included in the Roskomnadzor list. This extension works on the principle of activation only when trying to go to a web resource with limited access, which will allow you not to lose speed with daily use of the Internet, but nothing prevents you from setting up proxying to some other specific site if you need to change your real IP address.

Perhaps, "Bypass Runet Blocks" is one of the most extensive and flexible tools of this kind, since immediately after installation the user can move to the main control menu and select one of the address spoofing modes there. There are three options to choose from, and the action of each of them is described in detail by the creators in a separate pop-up window when you hover over the exclamation mark icon. In addition to all this, the user himself can configure the list of web resources on which blocking is required. In addition, we note the algorithm "Proxy or Die"... It works on the principle of interrupting connections when all Proxies fail and allows you to leave the page unnoticed.

If you have a very weak computer, which does not allow you to install a huge number of extensions and keep them active at all times, we advise you to study the MINI version of the extension discussed above. A full-fledged tool is always in the background and consumes about 30 megabytes of RAM, and this version is launched only when it detects the need to bypass the lock. The developers have described the differences between these two variations in more detail on their official website.

Betternet Unlimited Free VPN Proxy

Betternet Unlimited Free VPN Proxy is one of the simplest extensions of the topic discussed today. You will not find additional parameters or activated options in its menu. There is only a button to turn on and select one of four locations that are offered for free.

The developers also offer to purchase the full version of Betternet Unlimited Free VPN Proxy to open a large list of locations with minimal server load. This will significantly increase the connection speed and increase the variability of IP spoofing. We recommend that you first familiarize yourself with the free version and test it, and then think about purchasing a premium account.

The latest add-on for bypassing blocking sites through the Google Chrome browser, which we will touch on in this article, is called Hola. It functions in much the same way as the tools listed above. There is a free version with a limited choice of locations and low speed, and the creators have added the ability to purchase a subscription to Hola. The tool works stably, but it applies to absolutely all pages if it is in the enabled mode, which can cause a little discomfort when using open web resources.

Option 2: Anonymizers

Not all people have the ability or desire to install an extension in their browser to bypass site blocking. In such cases, web services come to the rescue, performing the function of an anonymizer. They also use VPN or Proxy, but they only ask you to enter the page address to go to.

NoBlockMe

The first on our list was NoBlockMe. This anonymizer is one of the most popular in the Russian-speaking segment and provides a high, stable connection speed, which does not cause any difficulties when processing a large amount of information, for example, when listening to music or watching movies. You just need to go to the link below and insert the address to go to the specially designated line, after which you can comfortably use the blocked site.

Chameleon

The Chameleon is practically no different from the previous solution, but due to its popularity and demand, it is even more often blocked by Internet providers, which is why we placed this site in second place. This web resource functions correctly and quickly, which will not allow you to feel the difference in connection speed when clicking on external links. Additionally, the Chameleon is resistant to the restrictions of the system administrator.

Now on the Internet there are more and more anonymizers, both Russian-speaking and foreign. You can use any tool, since they are not much different in the way they work. It is important to keep several of these sites in stock, as they have been increasingly blocked by ISPs or system administrators lately.

You were familiar with two ways to bypass site blocking in Google Chrome. All of the above options allow you to easily enter a portal with limited access, without experiencing a significant loss of connection speed. At the end, we note that there are also special programs for spoofing the IP address. They are already distributed to the entire computer and the programs that are launched.
