One of the most important tasks is the coverage of the rapidly increasing number of economic objects with statistics. In 1993 alone, the number of economic facilities increased by 1 million units. and currently exceeds 4 million.
In the context of perestroika, serious difficulties arose in obtaining reports from enterprises, primarily from the non-state sector, especially in trade, the service sector, the system of small business and farming. In these conditions, much attention is paid to the development and implementation in practice of selective and other methods of non-continuous collection of statistical information.
In the process of processing, it was possible to preserve a unified system of state statistics, which includes Rosstat, its bodies in republics, territories, regions, autonomous regions and autonomous okrugs, cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg, districts and cities, subordinate enterprises, organizations and educational institutions.
The organizationally unified system of state statistics includes 2250 organizations:
at the federal level - 7;
at the regional level - 87 committees and departments of statistics;
at the district level -2156 regional (city) departments of statistics.
Rosstat is the federal executive body that administers Russian statistics. Its main tasks are:
· Development of scientifically grounded statistical methodology that meets the needs of society at the present stage, as well as international standards;
· Provision of official statistical information to the President of the Russian Federation, the Government of the Russian Federation, the Federal Assembly, federal executive bodies, the public, as well as international organizations;

At the federal level, the integration of information resources of the entire system of state statistics bodies is carried out. The analysis of economic and social processes is carried out on the basis of indicators contained in the state statistical reporting, and on the basis of sample statistical surveys.
One of the most important tasks of Rosstat is the preparation of publications in the field of statistics and informing the general public.
Official statistical publications are divided into the following types:

In 2005 the following periodicals were issued:
· Socio-economic situation in Russia;

The journal "Russian Statistical Review" is also published in English. This magazine has two parts. The first part provides a picture of the macroeconomic situation, presented in the form of tables and graphs. The data presented characterize the trends developing in the country during the year on the basis of monthly indicators. In addition to the materials of Rosstat, data from the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation, the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, the Federal Customs Service and a number of other departments are used.
