Why are there queues for the new iPhone X? The opinion of psychologists. Is Android safer than iOS? Evgeny Zobnin's column iPhone and android from the point of view of psychology

The official sale of the new iPhone X has started in Russia. In Moscow, Kazan and St. Petersburg, it is still possible to buy a fashionable gadget at only a few official points of sale. On the morning of November 3, on the first day of sales, there were lines of 200-300 people, and mostly schoolchildren and students stand in lines, who can hardly buy an expensive smartphone at their own expense.

Channel employees asked psychologists to explain the phenomenon of the "iPhone queue". According to experts, people storming stores in the early morning may have different motivations and goals.

“Many people present themselves through things,” says Alexandra Levina, psychologist at Vita-ars.ru. - With the iPhone X in the package, there are several more messages to other people, all together or each has his own. 1. "I am exceptional" (the new expensive model will not be mainstream). 2. "I am rich" (I can afford it - it is worthy of respect). 3. "I am faithful Apple" (most often new iphone bought instead of a phone of the same brand of the previous model. This is where the need for belonging is realized) .4. "I keep up with the times" (only the model came out - I have it) ".

Psychotherapist Marina Kudryashova believes that iPhone is tightly occupied by the market, like Adidas, Toyota and other brands. “This is a gadget that has gained wide popularity due to advertising and has become a 'fashion accessory', technically quite good, - she emphasizes. - Pricing policy is related exclusively to the brand. Many young people want to be in trend. " From the point of view of psychology, the desire to acquire a fashionable thing is explained by the fact that people are social beings. “It is much more important for teenagers to be a part of their social group than to think that they will have to pay off this consumer loan for a year or even five years,” Kudryashova notes. "Fashion is something that brings together a certain part of society."
Marina Kudryashova recalled that crowds are lining up behind the novelties of designer clothes, popular video games, TV series, books. And this is due to the desire of people to remain in their social group, to be a full-fledged part of it, to be able to communicate on the same wavelength.

According to Yulia Guseva, Candidate of Psychology, Associate Professor of the Department of Human Psychology, Russian State Pedagogical University. A.I. Herzen, the desire to buy an iPhone may be based on human fears and complexes.
“One of the motives that people buy too expensive things and even line up to buy is the motive of prestige. Possessing a thing that most people around you do not have is to stand out. That is why many people want to become the first owner of the coveted thing. Why should a person stand out in this way, this is the next question, says Guseva. - For one, this is a desire to attract attention to oneself, for another - to increase their importance in the eyes of others, for the third - the fear of being rejected by those for whom the possession of any thing turns out to be very significant.

10 most productive smartphones according to the AnTuTu benchmark

Top-of-the-line iPhones outperform the flagships on Android both in the speed of complex tasks and in synthetic tests. For example, with the latest A11 chip, Bionic transcodes a 2-minute 4K video to Adobe Clips in 42 seconds, from Google it takes almost 3 minutes, and Samsung Galaxy S8 - over 4 minutes. In the most popular benchmarking applications Geekbench and AnTuTu, the new iPhones also take the first places by a wide margin.

2. iPhones have better cameras

Some of best cameras among Android smartphones Samsung has Galaxy Note 8 and Google pixel 2/2 XL. The first one does an excellent job with subject photography, while the other two are able to surprise with night shots and photos in HDR mode. However, in the test, which also includes simple scenes with natural light and portrait mode, the iPhone 8 Plus still wins. In most cases, it will allow you to get much better and more pleasing to the eye pictures.

3. Best software and hardware integration

Every technical innovation in the iPhone integrates with a host of iOS software features. This provides additional options and simply provides a new experience for using the device.

An example is the technology by which pressing the icon harder allows you to open a small menu and go directly to certain application functions. Another example is the unique portrait mode with studio light on the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. additional camera and proprietary software algorithms for photo processing.

Also, one cannot fail to note the technology for recognizing the user by face. It is powered by a suite of TrueDepth sensors and artificial intelligence... It is the latter that makes it possible to recognize the owner even in a headdress or with a beard. All these features are laid down at the level of the system itself, while Android device manufacturers are limited to their own shell. To make these features available to everyone, Google itself must take care of them.

4. iPhone remains the easiest smartphone to use

Despite all the promises of Android smartphone manufacturers to optimize theirs and make them lighter, iOS on iPhone remains the simplest and most intuitive system. You can blame her for the lack of external changes, but for many, keeping the design, on the contrary, is a plus. Apple has been improving iOS from year to year, while keeping it simple and recognizable. appearance... By switching your iPhone 6 to iPhone 8, you don't have to re-learn the interface and look for familiar functions. In addition, there is a convenient function of transferring all the necessary data.

5. Operational and large-scale iPhone updates

Distribution chart of fresh iOS 11, according to Mixpanel

An indisputable advantage of the iPhone is the system updates that arrive on almost the same day for all compatible models. For example, according to analyst firm Mixpanel, more than 70% of all iPhones are already installed with iOS 11. The latest statistics on the distribution of Android versions cannot be compared to any comparison. Fresh Oreo is currently installed on only 0.5% of devices, and last year's Android 7 Nougat has not even crossed the 25% mark.

6. The best apps come to iOS first

pocket-lint.com

Many games and applications to this day are initially released on iOS, and after some time they appear in Google play... Examples include both, and, and Snapchat. Even Instagram on Android only became available two years after its debut in App Store... It is much more profitable for developers to create applications for iOS, since, according to statistics, in the United States alone, the average user spent $ 47 on applications in the App Store per year. For Android and Google Play, this figure is $ 30.

7. Lack of pre-installed "garbage"

Having complete control over software iPhone, Apple completely eliminates the possibility of pre-installed applications from third-party developers. This applies to both operator services and partner software, which can be found on many Android smartphones. These can be translators, additional browsers, unknown file managers, office utilities or games. Often unnecessary applications cannot even be erased from memory.

8. Additional features when working with Mac

WITH new function Continuity for iPhone calls and messages can be received directly from your MacBook. Also you can start writing email or edit a document on iPhone and continue on Mac. There is even a universal one that allows you to copy text on a smartphone and paste it into a document on a macOS device.

9. Best service and support

When you have any problems with your Android smartphone, you can try to find a solution in numerous online forums or go to the store where the smartphone was purchased. The seller, depending on the problem, may send to service center... There, the apparatus is usually delayed for more than one week, until the turn comes to it.

For the iPhone, you have an extensive database of helpful help articles on the Apple website, as well as the ability to get direct chat with an employee. service department... If the problem is not solved remotely, you can go to an authorized service center.

The iPhone 7 is a device that, whether you like it or not, generates more debate than the debate of the candidates for the presidency of the United States. The new generation did not become as disruptive as the iPhone 6 once, in two versions of which the traditionally tiny screen diagonal has unexpectedly grown. Nevertheless, for Apple and all fans of "apple" products, the release of the iPhone 7 is a grandiose event.

In one of the discussions, a user who considers himself a fan of Android devices made a list of the main advantages and disadvantages of the new iPhone. Among them are five reasons why the owners of "Googlephones" will spit from the iPhone 7 and five reasons why they want to buy "Apple" novelty.

"Against"

1. Low screen resolution

Despite the fact that the screen in every generation Apple smartphones getting better in terms of brightness, color rendering and many other parameters, its resolution has not changed for three seasons.

I'm not saying the screen is bad. It is sufficient for most users. Until you start looking at fonts and icons. And ... see pixelation. Yes, I find fault. And I have every right to do so, given the cost of the device.

But that's not the point. Key "trick" Apple screens is that they are very easy to break. Regular mineral glass does not survive drops as well as, for example, the latest generation of Gorilla Glass or the shatterproof screen of Motorola flagships. In the new generation, this flaw persisted - at least Apple did not say that they had solved the problem of the fragile screen in the “seven”.

2. No headphone jack

Lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack. Until you come across this feature of the iPhone 7, don't think how inconvenient it is. Yes, there are headphones with Lightning included. Yes, there is an adapter. And here the "but" begins.

The adapter is the first candidate to be lost. Plus, the appearance of the beautiful iPhone 7 with this cheap "layer" between the device and the headphones for $ 200-300 loses much in the integrity of perception. I would definitely leave the adapter in the box and forget about it.

The bundled headphones are not a solution for me: EarPods have such a design that does not allow them to stay in my ears for more than three steps, and after 30 minutes of listening to music without moving in space, the ears begin to ache. Not mine.

There is only one way out - buy wireless headphones or headphones with Lightning. And these are additional costs, and not the smallest ones. Good wireless "ears", for example, do not cost 3 or 4 thousand rubles. I don't like it when my possibilities are artificially limited.

3. Sizes and tradeoffs

The size of the current iPhone lineup is the main compromise of these devices. It would seem that you still need to be happy: a very small iPhone SE with 4 inches, iPhone 7 with a diagonal of 4.7 and a shovel 7 Plus with 5.5 inches.

But a person accustomed to Android has a problem. If he is unlikely to look towards the iPhone SE due to its microscopic size, then the iPhone 7 may interest him. And then the following thing happens. The standard diagonal of screens on Android is a range from 5 to 5.7 inches. Most handy smartphones fall in the 5-5.2-inch range (e.g. Galaxy S7, HTC 10, Sony Xperia XZ). After similar devices, the screen on the iPhone 7 is clearly small.

"But there is 7 Plus!" - you tell me. Right. Only he is such a shovel that it is even larger in size than the hot in every sense new product from Samsung, Galaxy Note 7, where the screen diagonal is larger than in the 7 Plus. And from this, the choice in favor of the "plus" I would also call a compromise: you have to sacrifice convenience and compactness for the sake of big screen which, as other manufacturers show, is not always necessary.

And one more thing - Wireless. Apple at the presentation talked for a long time about the abandonment of wires and the transition to the era of "Wireless", that is, wireless. My legitimate question is: where is wireless charger lost? It's time to add to the iPhone, 2016 is in the yard.

4. No notification indicator

A trifle, you tell me. iPhone can turn on the screen when you take it off the table. Yes, a trifle, yes, he can. But that doesn't diminish the importance of the notification indicator in the least.

I always know which notification came to my Samsung: a missed call - the indicator blinks blue, a message in Facebook Messenger - green, someone wrote in WhatsApp - yellow. Even without picking up the phone, you understand who could call or write you. It is very convenient, but it is not available for iPhone users, which is a pity.

5. Price

Android smartphones have long ceased to be a "cheap iPhone style". Price tag on Samsung flagships or Sony, and recently even on my favorite Chinese Huawei, is as close as possible to the cost of the iPhone 7. But I'm used to looking at what the manufacturer asks for that kind of money.

In the case of the same Samsung, I understand the pricing for 100% - maximum performance on the most modern and technological hardware, best screens(and even curved in a fashionable way), excellent ergonomics.

In the iPhone, you pay for something else - for the bull's eye on the back and the overall balance of the device, which works great despite its mediocre performance by 2016 standards.

For a lot of money from the iPhone, you get the best ecosystem on the market - your MacBook and iPad Pro always work in conjunction with your iPhone, everything is synchronized, everywhere the shared content is convenient. But sometimes it's too intrusive. And some things (such as linking to iTunes, and now also to Lightning / Bluetooth headphones) cause irritation.

The price tag on the iPhone in Russia personally raises questions for me. Another thing is in the United States: if you compare prices with ours, the residents of America will get a device cheaper by one-fifth or even a quarter (depending on the state tax) - that's already a conversation!

"Per"

1. Device "all at once"

Moisture protection, one of the best cameras on the smartphone market, excellent performance, games guaranteed without brakes - the iPhone has everything you need from a modern smartphone. All this is enclosed in a perfectly assembled, pleasant and stylish body, and in the case of a “simple” seven, it is also ergonomically close to ideal.

2. Camera

When you buy any fresh iPhone, you can be sure that the camera in it is the gold standard for the category. mobile devices... iPhone 7 is no exception, but in version Plus more and with a cool chip - a dual camera. And Apple has done a really unique thing. For the Android smartphone market dual camera not news: take the Huawei P9 or LG G5, for example.

But for the first time in the industry, a second camera is being used for portraits (available later in software update) and hardware support for 2x optical zoom. In my opinion, this is a much more applied story than the black and white module in the P9, which improves color reproduction.

The wide-angle camera implementation in the LG G5 is also very interesting in terms of the final result, but the feature proposed by Apple seems to me potentially more in demand. Looking forward to an influx of cool Instagram portraits.

3. Battery

I do not like to live in the constant feeling that the smartphone is about to run out. For me personally, this feeling is internally similar to a situation when you are late for an important meeting - such an unpleasant sensation that is slightly unnerving and unbalanced. Almost any Android smartphone is capable of putting me in such a nervous state.

But the iPhone 7, and even more so the 7 Plus, is unlikely to succeed - since the days of the iPhone 6s Plus, which I tested a year ago, the battery showed its best side - after a whole day of active use, almost half of the charge remained. The promised increase in battery life from a single charge (+2 hours for the 7-ki and +1 for the 7 Plus) should make the iPhone 7 one of the best "long-livers" on a single charge on the market, and it is worth a lot.

4. Music

I love listening to music. Almost any modern smartphone able to adequately reproduce the tracks of my favorite artists. But not everyone is able to do this so that I nod with pleasure when I hear clear sound with honest juicy bass and high level of detail in my favorite headphones.

iPhone has always been good in terms of sound with headphones, and without them too. Even one iPhone speaker The 6s Plus played pretty well, and the stereo sound of the “seven” speakers will overlap last year's flagship.

There are “music” smartphones on the market with special chips responsible for the musical component, which can satisfy even the most discerning listener. But none of them can be called a truly mainstream smartphone for one and all. And the iPhone can - a good choice for those who need good sound (albeit overshadowed by the lack of a standard 3.5mm jack in the new products).

5. Apps and games

Optimization, optimization and optimization again. Launching even the heaviest toys and apps instantly is about the iPhone. Developers still make money mainly on iOS applications (Android is much less profitable) - that's why they pay so much attention to the platform and products for it.

It is here that most of the exclusives live (albeit even for a short period of time) - often it is iPhone users who are the first to receive new applications and games (the same MSQRD or the one promised to us at the Mario presentation).

You do not need to go into details and think about whether the game will start on your device with maximum settings graphics or not - absolutely everything that is available in the App Store will work on the new (and many old) iPhones. And that's great.

conclusions

What do we have at the output? For me, as a person who has been changing one Android flagship to another once a year for many years, one thing is clear: the Android platform is more flexible, the variety of manufacturers and models of smartphones gives customers a choice.

Do you want a simplicity of the interface? Please - here's to you new flagship from Huawei. Appreciate an operating system without add-ons? The top smartphone from Google (formerly Nexus, and soon, most likely, Pixel) is already waiting for you on the store shelf. Want to maximum performance and the best functionality on your device? Look away Galaxy line Note or Galaxy S from Samsung. It is also important that you always have the opportunity to switch to a smartphone from another manufacturer, if, for example, the interpretation of Android from LG or Meizu is boring to you.

With the iPhone, the situation is different - you always have a choice of one or several devices with a familiar interface, which can only be refreshed with a new wallpaper or expanded with a cool new application.

Is it bad? Not at all. With the iPhone, you buy the confidence that you will get the most stable and nimble device that will be relevant for at least 1-2 seasons. And then you'll be waiting for the new iPhone again.

And there will be a new wave of heated discussions and activation of two camps: Android vs. iPhone. This battle will drag on for years. Whose side are you on?

In which he presented his vision of gestures in Android, at the same time calling the current gestures suck. After reading this material, I can confidently agree with his opinion, although before that I considered gestures quite normal.

First, let's explain the ideology of gestures. Gestures don't just allow you to combine 3 navigation buttons into one, they help change the user's interaction with the system. V currently Android has 3 buttons, each of which does a different job.

The task of gestures is to remove the layer in the form of buttons. In other words, to go to the desktop, the user uses a button that performs the desired action. The task of the gesture is to make the user independently perform the action without using the button. Thus, we get rid of the unnecessary layer in the form of standard navigation buttons. Why would a user have to press the Home button to invoke the closing animation of the application when the user can initiate the animation with a specific gesture.

From the point of view of psychology, gestures are clearer and more logical than buttons. Moving the window with a gesture, relying on the physics of objects, the human brain expects a similar behavior of elements on the screen. In the case of buttons, an unknowing person will not understand the functions included in them. With the help of gestures, the user directly interacts with the elements on the screen, this allows him to immerse him in the system, to give a feeling of freedom of action, the user will better understand the layers of the system and its structure.

In Android P, the upward swipe opens a menu of recently launched apps with search. In this case, a second swipe up brings up the menu of all applications. Noah believes that in this way Google wants to abandon the desktop in the future, and the menu latest applications should become the main window of the system. I agree with this position, and, in my opinion, such a decision would be the most correct, since it is the menu of the latest applications that allows, together with gestures, to make the process of using the device as convenient and fast as possible.

Android problem

In the case of gestures in Android P, Noah notes their confusion. Initially, it is not clear whether we have buttons or gesture controls. Android P gestures are not complete. We have a bottom navigation bar and gestures are used. What are gestures for when the lower usable area of the display is still used by the navigation buttons? It's a lack of organicity.

Why is the Back button needed? After all, you could have come up with a gesture that would save the system from an unnecessary and unnecessary button? The Home button is not needed either. The system doesn't need buttons at all - gestures don't involve using buttons.

As an example, Semus cites gestures in the iPhone X, while not considering them ideal, but believing that they are better than those found in Android P. What is the significant difference between iOS and Android gestures? On Android, swiping up brings up a menu of recently launched apps, which is fine, but the animation is the problem. In Android, animation happens in a linear fashion without any freedom. In the case of the iPhone, swiping upward shrinks the application window into a small icon that fits into place on the desktop. From the point of view of psychology, such an implementation is more logical, it creates the feeling that the user with his gesture controls the entire process of hiding the application.

Fixing Android gestures

Noah thinks the implementation of the swipe up with a call to the menu of the last launched applications is good, so he does not suggest changing this gesture. The article focuses on the Home and Back buttons.

This will get rid of the Home button. Thus, we have set the position of the menu of the last running applications in the system - it will be located to the left of the desktop, and the "Up and Left" gesture in this case will be logical. If the user scrolls through the menu of the last running applications for a long time and finds himself at the extreme left point, it will be possible to quickly swipe to the left, which instantly takes the user to the desktop.

The main purpose of the "Up and Left" gesture is to create the feeling that the user himself controls the process of switching to the desktop, and does not use the buttons that perform this action for him. We wrote about this at the beginning of the article.

Noah also did not like the scrolling slider in the menu of the last running applications. The slider replaced the double click on the Home button, which allowed you to switch between the last two running applications.

Now a little about the "Back" button. What is the essence of the up gesture? Noah decided to make this gesture by logging in. That is, the "Up and Left" and "Up and Right" gestures move the user to system windows... Thus, he decided to assign the "Back" action to the "Right" gesture along the navigation bar.

This action is logical, since we switch between the internal windows of the application, and there is no need to go to the system menus, that is, the "Up" gesture (and we previously defined its purpose) will be illogical and incorrect, since we are in the application window, and not in the system.

Outcomes

In my opinion, this vision of gestures in Android P is extremely convenient. Hopefully, Noah will be taken over by Google. What do you think? Share your opinion in the Telegram chat or below in the comments.

- a popular application for shooting, editing and sharing photos - a full year and a half after its release on the iPhone. Until that time Android owners could only watch with envy as their iPhone friends take and share photos with members of the growing social photo network, which by the time of its release on Android had gained as many as 30 million users.

Such a protracted porting of Instagram from iOS to Android is not uncommon. For example, the well-known game appeared on Android a whole year after the release on iOS, and it took twice as long to do this. Thus, obviously, a significant delay between the releases of popular applications on the iPhone and Android is not something out of the ordinary. However, the opposite move - from Android to iPhone - is extremely rare. There are two key reasons why this dichotomy exists: money and simplicity.

In fact, if the app is not a Google product, it is highly likely that the Android version will only be released after the iPhone release. Of course, Android phones used to have the Gmail app. However, it is very rare to see a large application launch on Android first. Even the fact that every month Android significantly improves its market share does not help in solving this situation.

According to Gene Munster, a reputable analyst at Piper Jaffray, Android Market (later renamed Google Play) generates just 7% of App Store revenue. Like, 85 to 90 percent of all dollars spent on a purchase mobile applications, goes to the App Store.

Indeed, we are talking about large amounts. Last year at the iPhone 4S launch, Apple announced that the company had paid over $ 3 billion to App Store developers. (Recall that Apple takes a 30% share of every app sale).

We can only guess why most Android device owners are not ready to spend money on buying applications. And this is a never-ending problem - due to lower incomes, many developers are forced to switch to the App Store side.

However, the money factor cannot fully explain the problem. It can't justify the huge time lag it took for Instagram to release the Android version. Plus, Instagram is free application and the company has yet to define its business model. No, the second half of the problem is explained ...

Maximum simplicity

Thus, we came to the conclusion that many mobile app developers do not choose Android because the platform does not generate sane income. However, an even bigger problem for developers is the question of whether it is possible to create great programs for the platform. Making a great iPhone app isn't easy. Building a great Android app is like impossible.

Every day more and more developers prefer not to plan the release of the Android version of their application at all. Hell, the developers of the popular game Infinity Blade for iOS, they "can't guarantee" it will perform well on Android - because there are so many various devices with Android. All of these devices can have different processors, different display sizes, and different amounts of internal memory.

Of course, this is partly true for the iPhone: the newest iPhone 4S received best processor compared to the iPhone 4, which in turn has a more advanced processor than the previous one iPhone model 3GS. However, iOS developers are confident that the next generation of iPhones will not less more powerful than the previous one. After powerful smartphone Android from HTC may be followed by a less powerful one from Samsung. Some Android devices have physical buttons some don't.

However, this problem is not only from the point of view of "hardware". Various Android smartphones have different versions operating system, and users have no guarantee that the phone they bought today will support new version Android in a month. In the case of the iPhone, it's Apple who makes the decision. In the case of Android, the decision is made by the operator and the individual phone manufacturer.

The last Android version called Ice Cream Sandwich currently runs less than Android. (Roughly 64 percent of Android devices run the version of Gingerbread that was introduced in late 2010).

Of course, on iOS, the opposite is true. Recently, we have already that after 15 days, about 80 percent of users have updated to the last iOS version 5.1.

Let me give you such a comparison. Imagine that Android devices are printers, and developers need to make ink to create an app. Do you always feel a little lost too when you walk into an office supply store for an ink cartridge for your printer? Even one brand has a huge number of models and sizes. So, Android developers need to create such ink that would work with all printers at the same time.

In terms of iOS, everything is much simpler. As a printer analogy, the following iOS devices will print faster and better, but they will still work with older ink cartridges.

The game continues

If you like Android, you buy an Android device. You either don't buy many apps, or at best you buy the apps that are available to you. You just have to state the fact that most of the most interesting mobile developments are left behind you. It's your right.

If you choose iOS, you win. You buy the device you want. The App Store is looking forward to meeting your mobile needs.

Honestly, there isn't much choice for developers. When you are in business, you do not choose between platforms based on your feelings or whims, you choose the path that is most beneficial for your business. Obviously, this is iOS today.
