Installing SSD instead of a DVD drive in the ASUS X550L laptop. Replacing DVD Drive for Additional HDD or SSD Solid State Drive

(Early 2011) at home.

In the courtyard crisis, and the dreams of buying a new MacBook are scattered as smoke. In this harsh time, when a kilogram of ordinary cucumbers stands, as a kilogram of Israeli apples, it's time to get a screwdriver and update your faithful aluminum comrade with your own hands.

If there is no screwdriver, hands, or lack courage, please contact the professionals of modding and repair. Verified masters live in the company Modmacwhich underestimated hands will ruthlessly disassemble any gadget, repaired and gather back without unnecessary remaining details.

Winter Saturday morning, in the drawing of clouds in the sky, I understood - it's time! Having made a backup, my MacBook Pro, we went to workshop For a rejuvenation operation. The plans were replacing the hdd's native loop to a new, as well as replacing the optical drive on a supere-speed SSD drive, using a special OPTIBAY tray.

Few people know, but if SSD drive to put instead of native HDD, and the native HDD to install the second hard disk Instead of a CD drive, then with this scenario, the system will work slightly slower. Better SSD disc stick into the place of the optical drive, and native HDD is left in place. Performance will be higher.

Upon arrival, my laptop immediately moved to the master, and I got a small role of an impassive statist, which fixed every movement of the specialist's hands on camera.

Preparation

So, the MacBook Pro is located on the table, inverted upside down, being our defenseless abstraction. 10 cogs were unscrewed by the deft movements of the cross screwdriver, over the perimeter of the back cover. And then, without applying special efforts, the lid was removed and gently postponed to the side.

Once again, I was released an ergonomic location of all components within the brainchild of Steve Jobs. How nevertheless fascinating all the filling is driven to each other!

The first stage is successfully completed, go to the next level.

Replacing the hdd loop

In my MacBook, the hard disk is removed quite simple. In some models, for example, to pull the HDD you must first remove the battery, but this is not our case. So, what to do, on points:

1) disconnect the loop leading from the battery on the fee;

2) unscrew the two screws and pull out the clamping bar;

3) Carefully pull for a special tongue of the hard disk and fingers (a mediator, special plastic blade) disconnect the loop from the hard disk.

The hard disk loop is very fragile, pulling hard, tear and turn it extremely not recommended.

For what you need to change the loop to a new one: sometimes (rarely, but still) after replacing the ordinary HDD on the SSD, the MacBook disk begins to behave strangely. It seems the disk utility sees the new SSD, formats it and does not find any errors; The operating system is downloaded, but all installation attempts are interrupted with a gray screen with a flashing folder icon or a question mark.

In this case, it helps the replacement of the hard disk loop. The operation is quite jewelry and requires confident movements and some kind of skill of such actions. This is how the replacement of the hdd loop:

1) Gently need to disconnect the loop connector from the board, unscrew the two screws that lock the loop in the housing and two screws that lock the black bar on the front inner wall of the case.

To the fingers gently pull out the black bar, to which the HDD loop is glued and terrified the miniature sizes of the connector, which should be carefully removed.

At this stage, you need to collect all the concentrations in the fist and tweezers disconnect the connector from the HDD loop. It is impossible to swear on the mother, preferably breathe.

After this dangerous procedure, you can exhale and relax, the HDD loop is completely removed.

So, at this stage, we have a native hard disk and completely disconnected its loop. To install a new loop, all the steps above should be repeated in the reverse order. Again, the most difficult part is to connect a small connector to the connector of the new hdd of the loop.

Replacing the optical drive on SSD disk

Gently disconnect the cable responsible for AirPort / Bluetooth and the Camera Cable from the board. These cables (like most others) are very fragile and brittle.

Then we gently remove the cable around the CD perimeter and disconnect the antenna connector.

It remains the easiest: unscrew the three screws that hold the optical drive, carefully remove it, and disconnect the loop connector. All, the floor of the case is done, now you need to insert the drive to the expectant emptiness.

SSD and OPTIBAY.

Everything is simple here. The OPTIBay tray is taken, a new SSD drive is inserted into it, it is inserted to spin two locking screws on the side, insert a short loop from the CD drive in the tray, which was removed in the previous step, and insert the entire resulting design into place. In conclusion, repeat all the above-described manipulations to remove the drive in the reverse order.

At the very end, the main thing is not to forget to connect the back of the battery cable, which was disconnected at the very beginning of this article-instruction.

Hostess at a notes

After pumping MacBook Masters from Modmac Can configure such a thing as Fusion Drive.

Fusion Drive is a technology for combining a conventional hard disk (HDD) and a solid-state disk (SSD) with a 128 GB of flash memory into a single logical volume. Mac OS X automatically controls its contents, so frequently used files, such as applications, documents, photos (and so on), are dynamically moved to flash memory to accelerate access to them. For example, if any program is used frequently, it will automatically be moved to an SSD drive to speed up access to it. As a result, the start-up time is reduced, and as the computer's use profile has been accelerated in the data utilization system and access to files.

By cunning manipulations with terminal teams guys from Modmac can configure MacBook so that the system will see one common disk, capacity of 768 gigs (general Capacity SSD and HDD drives ) That this is one SSD drive.

Performance grows, nerves will be guarded, the owner is happy. I essentially recommended. The only warning is needed during the operation of the laptop to avoid emergency shutdowns, Fusion Drive can "sprinkle", and you have to restore all the information re-( therefore, you must always remember the backup!).

Finally, as a bonus, the laptop's insides were cleaned with a powerful stream of compressed air from dust. Work after this MacBook has become even quieter.

What did we know a new one from this story, friends?

All operations, taking into account the experience of the master in such matters, took 20 minutes from the strength. I received on my hands of my "old man", which in the literal sense of the word came to life. Loading OS X is now occupied by 4 seconds, all programs are loaded so that I do not redeem, plus an additional 500 gigs appeared for storing files. I didn't use the CD drive anyway, so I didn't notice his loss.

Cash accelerates running Systems and programs to a level comparable to conventional SSD, since the data is read from the solid-state drive. But work OS and cache programs do not speed up, as well as copying large files. However, for many programs, after starting, the speed of the disk does not have a special value.

Such a system allows partly to achieve a compromise between SSD speed and HDD capacitance. Depending on the laptop model, the caching SSD is embedded in the hard disk (resulting in a hybrid disk, SSHD) or connected via the MSATA interface.

Does it make sense to install the system on this SSD

I think this is a bad idea. Of course, you can "break" a software RAID and stuff Windows to a small SSD, but you need to consider several points.

1. Low speed drive

Yes, it will be higher than the hard disk, but it will not reach the "normal" SSD. For example, Intel SSD 313 is equipped with a hard-time SLC memory (you will no longer find it in traditional drives), but is limited by the SATA II speed. And even if the drive supports SATA III, the controller is unlikely to be optimized for disk operation as a systemic.

In addition, you should not expect wonders of performance from him also for the following reason.

2. Critical lack of disk space

To begin with, you immediately make all 6 mistakes of people with a small system partition, and this has already been said. It is for this reason that Paul quickly concluded that for long-term work 32GB system partition will not be enough.

But, let's say you were distinted and disconnected / moved everything that can be on the hard disk. It is not clear that at the same time you won, and meanwhile, the SSD is still completely filled with you, i.e. You cannot leave unoccupied recommended 10-20% of space.

On eBay and in Chinese stores, he is worth a kopeck - look for requests HDD DRIVE CADDY., SATA HDD Caddy. etc.

Choosing an adapter, take into account its height (9.5 or 12.7 mm), since the optical drive dimensions differ depending on the thickness of the laptop.

In addition, the adapter may not quite approach in depth. So, I have a little shorter and, as a result, recessed into the housing. But I do not worry, because My laptop does not participate in beauty contests :)

3. Buy good MSATA SSD

More recently available on sale MSATA SSD differed from large felling capacity for the worse, but now the situation has changed.

Large players came to the market, and their MSATA drives are equipped with the same NAND, controller and firmware as flagship models.

This is true, for example, for pairs of Intel 520 and 525 (on Sandforce controllers), Plextor M5P and M5M (on Marvell). The cost of 1GB disk space in MSATA drives is somewhat more expensive, but the presence in the hard disk laptop allows you to do the medium-sized SSD models.

MSATA drives in size are much less than their older brothers, and the picture does not reflect the real dimensions of 3x5 cm and the weight in 9 g.

If you have such a drive is used for cache or there is a free MSATA port, you will get a fast and sufficiently capacious SSD, as well as increase the total amount of disk space in the system. Preliminary be sure toWhat is in your laptop:

  1. MSATA connector is connected to the SATA III interface of the motherboard. We somehow discussed with Artem's insoles this question in relation to his lenovo laptop W530. The chipset supports only two SATA III connections (they use the main disk and optical drive), so MSATA SSD has to be connected to SATA II.

    Of course, even in this case, MSATA SSD can be used, and its speed will be higher than that of the hard disk. However, she still widespread in throughput SATA II.

  2. Supports loading system from disk connected by MSATA. Otherwise, you will need to put the download manager on the HDD.

Information about the presence of MSATA and chipset ports can be found in the Laptop User Guide (including service), on the manufacturer's website or in GoogleDex. We also will also find a laptop manufacturer's forums for possible obstacles or problems.

Nevertheless, is it possible to install Windows on this little SSD?

Want to personally come on a rake? General requirements Before installing the OS:

  1. In UEFI / BIOS:
  • aHCI mode is enabled
  • SSD stands above the HDD in the list of devices from which the boot order is running (BOOT ORDER)
  • Tom SSD should be simple, not dynamic
  • Specific instructions depend on the laptop model and applied caching technologies.

    Bought, replaced HDD on SSD. Until complete cleaning before windows installation 8.1 Little SSD has not been used, since the system was not visible. After cleaning, it works as a small drive for all nonsense.

    Alexey Matashkin.

    Until recently, the main home PC was a tabletop, however, it switched to a laptop. The choice fell on Dell Inspiron 7720.
    One of the important selection criteria was the configuration of hard drives. In a laptop, two baskets for HDD and a place for MSATA, though with the nuances: MSATA is panled with the second HDD, so either one or another.
    It was for this reason that I took a configuration only with 1TB HDD and immediately purchased 256GB SSD to it.
    The system is installed on the SSD, the second disk is used to store large volumes of photos, video, and the like.
    In such configuration, no additional actions did, the performance is more than enough for me.

    By the way, such an adapter with the SATA and IDE interface is on sale in Yulmarct. But the thickness should be specified separately.

    3. 1 HDD at 500GB, 5400RPM.
    4. It is strictly not, especially after I saw the speed of the PC with SSD.
    5. I bought SSD, put it instead of HDD, and the HDD using an adapter installed in the ODD compartment, and the stub from the drive perfectly approached the adapter.

    The cache speeds up the launch of the system and programs to the level of comparable with the usual SSD, since the data is read from the solid-state drive.

    After the "level" asks the comma.

    i'm fine and stupid
    In the working beech there is a PCW 3 on Sandforce, nothing more do nothing there. But to the laptop there is a docking station where the option is just tested with the replacement of ODD through the adapter to the Winchester and sticks out 640 GB from the VD. For a cold backup and not very important there is 1 TB of Hitachi (more precisely HGST Group) and a portable working box Zalman ve-300 with 500 GB VD. This is mobile.
    There are servers on the atom, where I want the IRAT SCD to 60 GB and replace 1 TB laptop to 1.5. But there is not WINDOVS itself, so it does not fall into this statistic.

    by the way, the atoms of the Intel on the board are made - 1 Satumnik either through the standard port or msat. The second is just a Satushnik. I so understood now a lot of who became doing so.

    5. I tried to install Windows 7 on SSD. Did not come out. Restored Windows 8, and soon updated to Windows 8.1. Made the boot directly to the desktop. And I only appeal to the tile when you need to download the application.

    Voted. I have a HDD Caddy with Winchester WD Black 500 GB 7200 SATA2 instead of a DVD drive. And mostly stands SSD Corsair at 128 GB SATA3. The chip is still that on both disks I have a warranty of 60 months. I now do not know what kind of brakes and lags, and even places the car.
    Prior to that, HDD 5400 was standing, only blood pressure. I don't like wheels at all on 5400, they are terribly slow.

    The external panel from the drive went to the HDD Caddy and the outside is not noticeable at all, which is inside not the drive.

    And I also used a tambourine and threatened a lot of time to load a laptop with MSATA SSD when the device (BIOS) MSATA is not supported as a boot. But, as a result, the difference, even with a full 90% SSD, is essential.

    Vadim Sterkin.: Alexander, and how did you try to download from the unsupported MSATA?

    Vadim Sterkin., cloned OS with HDD, leaving MBR on it. There is a wonderful EasyBCD utility for managing the heading sector, the order of loading OS, etc.

    Vladimir.

    Dear Vadim, I want to argue about your approval
    "It is not clear that at the same time you won, and meanwhile, the SSD is still strongly filled with you, i.e. You cannot leave the recommended 10-20% of the space unoccupied. "
    You can win this: I have the volume of 32 GB on the SSD, only the volume occupied by 13.4 GB is installed, which leaves free more than 50%. All programs are installed on another section. Also, the folders are transferred to another section to which the system writes a lot. OS installed 2.5 years ago (how is it - long-term work?) And all this time filling SSD is about the same.
    As a result, the gain of the download speed is noticeable very well, the SSD durability should not suffer.

    1) HP Pavilion DV7-7171ER.
    2) Yes, by default there were two HDDs (5400 RPM).
    3) Toshiba, but I will not remember the model.
    4) No. And at the moment he thought about the feasibility of 2 TB in a laptop, with homemade NAS.
    5) Replaced the System HDD on Samsung 840 Pro.
    I didn't really do anything:
    - By the standard reserve area, it did not post another interest 20-25 for long-lived.
    - did not "tuning" SSD with third-party utilities, as well as branded magican.
    - removed SSD diphration - according to the article from your blog (by the way for 8.1, is it relevant?)

    The speed is quite yourself - I am satisfied. Although doubt and did not cost this.

    Alexander

    I agree that installing Windows 7 - 8.1 on the SSD of 25-35 GB is not worth it. I have 60 GB SSD. After transferring to the HDD of the working profiles of users (but not the entire USERS folder), the paging file, and the folders Installer, MSOCACHE and SEARCHE Windows 7 x64 takes about 34 GB. The freshly installed system will occupy less, but still not an option - it may not be for a long time.
    In my opinion, hibernation for the system installed on SSD is not needed. What is the point of writing a large amount of data on a solid-state drive once if the net start takes a few seconds? Again, no one canceled sleep mode.

    Igor

    Hello, Vadim.

    About ssd I already consulted (See the letter on Gmail on July 19, 2013)So while this case is postponed by financial reasons, but generally tend to buy 2 devices for replacing a regular DVD-RAM drive.

    At the same time, I have an interesting point, relative to MSATA or the connector similar to it. I have a netbook Acer Aspire One D250 (no 3G module). The question is whether it is possible to put a solid-state drive on that connector? At one time, he saw such SSDs on sale but did not buy it because of the fear of incompatibility with the connector, although visually similar. What do you say on this topic?

    As an example, you can see here (connector for 3G module directly above the fan):

    Vladimir.

    Vadim Sterkin.: Vladimir, nothing interferes using sleep, while the speed of loading does not have. What else have you won?

    Vadim, I, in fact, did not write anything or about the hibernation, so your answer is not essentially.
    In addition to the mentioned, another win is that the disk image of the system, made by the Acronis True Image program has a volume of about 4 GB and is created and restored for 8 ... 10 minutes.
    For me, these arguments are more than enough to use such an organization of work.
    Hibernation on the desktop I do not use, using the laptop - I use, but infrequently, since now I mainly work on it from the network.

    Vladimir.

    Vadim Sterkin.: 1. Answer about sleep essentially, because If you use it, you can reboot once a month when installing updates. It knows everything who does not love all the time to start working in Windows from a clean sheet :)

    Vladimir.: Hibernation on the desktop I do not use, on a laptop - I use, but infrequently, since now basically I work on it from the network.

    Vadim Sterkin.: 2. Acronis does not include swap and hibernation files in the backup image, instead of them plug there, so on the size backup And the speed of its creation they do not affect.

    I did not claim anything like that. In my first post, I wrote that the system section can be made small, which just determines the gain in creating an image and its recovery.
    In addition, the transfer of folders to other sections allows NCHHHHe to lose when the OS is restored from the image or even when reinstalling the system.

    3. Array SSD RAID 0 of two 256-GB drives ADATA

    Vladimir.

    Vadim,
    At the very beginning you wrote:
    Pavel Nagaev (MVP Exchange) bought a laptop with a large HDD and a small SSD, to which it set to Windows. However, he very quickly abandoned this idea.
    And further:
    ... Paul quickly came to the conclusion that the 32GB long-term operation is not enough.
    Here, I was thinking from this that I could well have been and so long to work: after optimizing the OS, I was on the system SSD of 32 GB of 13.4 GB. This is enough for work for 2.5 years, and for the Hiberfil.sys file. In addition, the transfer of folders to another section makes it possible to lose anything at the collapse of the system and even with the full physical destruction of the system SSD (stole, burned down in a blue flame ...): For recovery, it will only be necessary to install a new SSD and deploy an OS from the image to it. You will need twenty minutes. Not more.
    As a result of the optimization of the gain of the download speed and the system, the system is noticeable, the SSD durability should not be affected, the image disk image is obtained small - about 4 GB, which is also good: the time for its creation and recovery is 8 ... 10 minutes.

    Vadim Sterkin.: Vladimir, Ok, I understand, your goal is to reduce the size of the system image so that it is faster, and the personal files are not lost when recovering / reinstalling.

    My goal is not to reduce the size of the system image, but ensuring the reliable operation of the computer: the preservation of the data (and this contributes in particular the placement of data and the system on different sections and even on different devices) And the reliable operation of the system, in particular, is a light and fast recovery, and the small size of the image is just a pleasant bonus.

    Vadim Sterkin.: And SSD here with what? What did you win, Flambed RAID and installing the OS there? Just in case, at the boot speed - nothing.

    About RAID I did not write anything - maybe it is a question for Pavel Nagaev? I compared the download speed and operation of the SSD system and on the HDD.
    In addition, SSD allows, so to speak, autonomizing the system on a physically separate device with a pleasant bonus in the form of a greater speed of work.

    Sergey

    "Standard Mobile PC Use Scenario - Instead of Full Shutdown Send to Sleep (incl. Standby mode with connecting to mobile PCs with Windows 8 and above) and the transition to hibernation when the battery discharge." - Yes. But in practice, the complete inclusion with SSD is faster or at least not slower than the exit from hibernation with HDD.

    Dmitriy

    Vadim, good afternoon!

    I just raised this topic in one of the comments from a month ago and you promised to write about it. I was looking forward to him.

    I have two laptops now just running Windows on SSD.
    I will share with you considerations about this.
    With the home laptop, everything is simple, but with the worker it turned out very interesting.

    Home Laptop:
    Lenovo Y580
    8GB RAM.
    Initially, caching MSATA Samsung on 64GB was installed
    Now it serves as a system disk with Windows 8.

    Windows was set by the most common, so it takes a lot of space, all necessary, including a worker software installed.
    Only hibernation is disabled from tweaks, because The launch is still very frisky and this is too explicit way to save 8GB on the disk. The paging file is made with floating up to 4GB, but filled with 400MB, it seems.
    Free 22 out of 60 gigabytes.

    Free space is stable and not particularly decreasing. If you remember that the disk is not rubber and not to use photoshopes and corners, then the problems you have described completely will not arise.

    With a working laptop, about which I asked you last time, I had to tinker and get rid of the problems that you described.

    So.
    Toshiba U840.
    8GB RAM
    caching SSD SANDISK 32GB

    Despite the Core i5 and the large amount of RAM, all the performance rested in a rigid disk on 5400PRM.
    SRT technology worked, but if there is already a computer with a system SSD in your life, it seems only a marketing trick and is completely not felt :)

    The problem could be solved by buying MSATA more, but it was unsportsbid.
    The problem was exactly the size of Windows after installation.
    I needed 10 GB for workflow and data in Roaming. Adding 20 Gigs to this head of Windows 7 after reinstalling. I received a scored disk. And this is just a big minus. And also infused the lack of space "Prosapas".

    The problem was solved by installing a trimmed Windows Distribution from one of the torrents.
    Powered by the possible criterion of assembly, the presence of specially left holes and so on.

    However, after installation, it turned out to be completely normal to register a license in Microsoft, put everything (!) Updates from the moment of assembly. All carved components were really not needed.
    As a result, I received 9GB to the Windows folder (5 immediately after installation), 8 GB for everything else, turned off the hibernation and installed a floating paging file.
    Free space 14 GB and especially not planned to increase.

    For 2 weeks of testing glitches, the system did not reveal.

    I understand that in both cases the phrase "22GB and 14GB free space»It may seem frightening. But I prefer to keep the system partition clean and speed. If there is a housing to put something capacious, you can always put it on the second disk and still have a super car system.

    From here I would like to receive your comment on my exit from the problem with the installation of a trimmed Windows.
    In my opinion the game cost a candle :)
    Prada is of course a spoonful of tar. SANDISK SSD better quality, sure. And in HD Tune Pro, the speed although it holds on 300mbs / s, at the beginning of the graph, it is significantly afraid of up to 150. However, it is only a test, it is not noticeable in this work and is still faster than HDD.

    Dmitriy

    The MSATA connector is connected to the SATA III III interface. We somehow discussed with Artem's penetrate this question in relation to its Lenovo W530 laptop. The chipset supports only two SATA III connections (they use the main disk and optical drive), so MSATA SSD has to be connected to SATA II.

    On his Lenovo Y580, he tried to solve this question for a long time, and I don't remember how and where I received the answer to him :) So I ask to help figure out again.

    By specification disk SATA. 3 (6 Gbps in sec) (up to 500 MB / s)
    HD TUNE gives a miner reading speed 216 MB, middle - 323, maximum - 396.
    Does this mean that I still have SATA 3 on this disk?

    I understand that a stupid question, considering that SATA2 is working to 300. :) But I want to make sure :)

    Vladimir.

    Vadim Sterkin.: if in laptop SSD. Was for a cache, the SATA controller worked in RAID mode (by cr. In the case of SRT).

    Vadim Sterkin.: What did you win, Finding the RAID and installing the OS there?

    Ufff ... So this is not me, and Paul broke something there? And already frightened that you climbed into my computer and found out a terrible secret, which was never there ...
    Generally speaking, I did not discuss the feasibility and correctness of the installation of the OS on SSD, intended initially for the cache, I simply comment on what was done:

    Vladimir.: Pavel Nagaev (MVP Exchange) bought a laptop with a large HDD and a small SSD, to which it set to Windows. However, he very quickly abandoned this idea.

    and I tried to show that you can work with the SEET disco in 32 GB.

    Vadim Sterkin.: But somehow strange that for 2.5 years, OS occupied only 13.5GB.

    How many occupied OS 2.5 years ago I do not remember, but the image of an optimized OS after installing all programs was then 3.2 GB, now 4.1 GB. That is, the size, of course, has grown.

    Vadim Sterkin.: And, probably, you are transferred not only files, but also% appdata%, or very few programs that keep data there (even installed on HDD).

    % APPDATA%, I have not transferred. Folders were transferred:
    1. My documents(more precisely, this folder was in its place since the time of Windows XP);
    2. Temp.(if they say that in this case, the time of hand-held programs is increasing, then I will answer that when installing some little things in two weeks, like me, it is not essential;
    3. Temporary Internet Files.. It is said that due to this, the work of the browser slows down, but at my Internet speed, I will never notice it.
    4. Mail. Bases of Windows Mail Program.
    5. Program Files.. Not transferred, and created! In this folder I install all programs. I have a lot of programs. Such who write a lot on the system partition even when installing them to another little: Microsoft Office. (incomplete), Adobe: Acrobat and Photoshop. Acronis True Image. There are several more programs that write to the system section of the essence of a trifle. The remaining programs are Portable.
    6. Folders Favoritesand Desktop. This is not to lose something when recovering.
    Now on your issues.

    Vadim Sterkin.: 1. The safety of the data lying on the HDD would be exactly the same, even if you did not put the OS on SSD.

    Yes it is. When I conceived to install the OS on a separate medium, first was going to take the HDD volume of 30 .. 40 GB. But while I was looking for such a new one, I came across SSD and simply "nailed" to a novelty promising to the same some benefits.

    Vadim Sterkin.: 2. On the reliability of the system, the type of carrier is unlikely to affect, but at speed - of course.

    I did not assert that the reliability of the system depends on the type of carrier. I think it does not affect. Although I personally familiar with the two HDD of the ten-year-old age, and with SSD I did not even hear about five-year-old, apparently, a little time passed.

    Vadim Sterkin.: 3. Yes, small size reserve image Systems are a plus, I wrote about it. But how many times have you resorted to restoration from the image for 2.5 years

    How many times the system was restored, I did not consider it, but I think that it turns out to be two or three times. It happens that picking some nasty (one hundred percent warranty gives any protection system), I will put a "curve" program, the computer starts without visible reasons Strongly slow down ... In such cases, if you do not manage to correct, I think not long - restore the system from one of the latest images: the work is just minutes for ten minutes.

    Articles are very cool, thank you very much vadim!
    After reading several articles about CZD, I had a question.
    Available laptop Acer. Aspire 5750g, unfortunately, it has only SATA 2 and the system hard drive for 5400 rpm in addition.
    I want to install a second disk instead of the DVD drive unused me. So the question is which disk to use? To put a small CDD (120GB) there and transfer the paging file, the temporary file folder and several applications to it, or to purchase a hybrid disk, to clone the system disk on it, hybrid to place the system, but the one, respectively, to the optical drive place.
    I can't come on my own right, I would like to know your opinion on this. Thanks again, great for excellent articles!

    Maxim

    Vadim Sterkin.,
    Yes, looking at the chipset, so it should be, but, unfortunately, there is only Sata 2 in fact.
    When choosing a SCED as a systematic, another problem occurs, the current size of the system partition is 680GB, but this is another story.

    Maxim

    Vadim Sterkin.I don't even know how "engineers" Acer managed to crawl Sata 2, but even the support service responds that in this model only Sata 2, which is actually confirmed by third-party software, I was also very surprised. I had one question, not on the topic, is it possible to produce a "clean" installing WIN7 using the key preset system? (This is regarding moving to CDS as the main disk)

    Maxim.

    Thanks for the article, Vadim!
    I am answering the questions:
    1. Lenovo IdeaPad. U310. One of the main parameters for selecting a laptop (in addition to the price) was the weight and size of this device, since it was intended for constant wearing.
    2. The disk configuration was a value for me, but the SSD size on MSATA was not determining. I didn't even know that this was a separate disk on a separate interface.
    3. SSD, in my opinion, SanDisk 24 GB, HDD WD 500 GB
    4. Performance was expected: how when working with a conventional HDD, at some points faster due to caching data on SSD. So worked with what I bought. The main drawback of my laptop: This is 4 GB memory, which was for my work a little: even on normal work Not enough, not to mention the launch of virtual machines. When I was tired of tolerate the inconvenience of working with a small memory, I bought 8 GB and installed them myself. "It became easier to live, there was fun."
    5. Then, since it began to change the configuration, and the costs were distributed over time, I bought SSD Kingston 120 GB and moved a system disk to it. Improvements have become noticeable immediately. Now the performance of my laptop is completely satisfied with me. I work comfortably in the main system and in the running virtual machine. The virtual machine lives on HDD, so it works significantly slower than the main OS, but it can be patient.
    Maybe there are differences between SSD discs on SATA and on MSATA, but I didn't notice them on the eye. I have a stationary PC with Win 7 on SSD, I do not see a special difference in speed with a laptop.
    In my laptop there are 2 points left that I would like to fix: screen resolution and WiFi communication quality. I will not change the screen matrix, and WiFi module, I think I will replace. It will be necessary to search for which module is considered good.

    1. ASUS K95VJ.
    2. Bought precisely because of the possibility of manipulations with hard drives, since there is a standard HDD 3.5 "(7200) plus a free slot 2.5" where it was decided to purchase SSD. The choice stopped the Kingston Hyperx 3K SSD 120GB 2.5 "SSD Kingston Hyperx 3K SSD 120GB 2.5" SATAIII. There is a single hemorrhoids to transfer the pre-installed Windows 8 without losing activation, but copped with Macrium Reflect (by the way, free prog). At first, I tried to optimize SSD, but reading your article about myths refused to optimize. windows work And programs on SSD are really very tangible, so this modernization was pleased with this modernization.
    Thanks for the articles on SSD.

    Sergey,

    After installing the ExpressCache utility that is included. The system works from 24g. How cache is visible in drive control.

    CL3R1K.

    Thanks for the article, Vadim!
    There is no SSD, so I can't check my theory myself. The first screen with IRST has the Select The Size Allocated for the Cache Memory and two items 18.6 GB and Full Disk Capacity. Those. You can specify a section for caching on an SSD or the entire disk. And if you assume a specific program with its data always keep on SSD?
    So I understand this will need to create a section for a program with data (for example 4 GB), and the rest of the place to give to another section, which in turn specifies as a cache in IRST. Will there be the first section of the system? Did you understand correctly? Or is there another way to solve?

    And another question is not entirely in the topic, on hard drives there is such a thing as a Bad (Bad Block) arising from different kinds of reasons, and how things are with SSD, do they have such problems? And what happens to faulty memory cells, turn into battered and also marked as non-working? In the case of HDD there is a chance to produce Remap broken sector, And in the case of SSD? Or does SSD do not suffer similar problems?

    Alexander

    Acquired a laptop with ssd cache
    Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E540
    Now I do not understand how to use it, or is it all configured to work?
    No Lenovo programs were installed, found some Express Cache called. But I have not watched it.
    What would you recommend to do? This is the more fruitful to use this Cache.

    Nikolay, perhaps the speed of recording your SSD disk on MSATA is this .. Just physically it can not ... ..

    Http://old.computerra.ru/sgolub/710560/), I agree with the author ... and therefore several more options appeared ...

    1. SSD under the system, programs and working files + HDD for landfill and archives.
    Here you will need SSD greater capacity, at least 500 GB and in this design it seems to me that the disk resource will be faster. You can, of course, buy an SSD for the server, their resource is 1.5-2 times higher, but also the price, respectively. Yes, the idea of making an automatic daily backup of working files with SSD on HDD, really I don't know yet (it will be necessary to learn this topic). Of the advantages - high speed, less noise, heating and energy consumption (on a laptop), from minuses, if the disk "covers" will fly the entire system and work for the last day ...

    2. SSD under the system and programs + SSD for temporary, working files and cache + HDD for landfill and archives
    In this embodiment, I think the disk resource will be saved longer and the main load will take the second SSD with temporary files if it "will cover", then the restoration of work will not be so long as in the second version ...

    What do you say about such options?

    Ruslan

    1. Sony VAIO SVN1311X1RS
    2. No, did not attach, anyway, everything is translated into SSD (32GB is not enough, and 120 will already be enough)
    3. SSD 32GB on MSATA + HDD 320 GB
    4. No
    5., Therefore, I rearranged the OS on SSD, but they are still not enough.

    2 days with a tambourine and found a simple option to put OS on MSATA (the boot order in BIOS has not changed). I pulled out HDD installed OS and already after put back HDD - everything is brilliant - just! Include in the article, I am sure that someone will come in handy, because I will change the SSD on MSATA, after all, it does not prevent an unnecessary place of the usual screw.

    Every year, users are increasingly resorting to the use of optical drives. USB drives and cloud storage services due to convenience and mobility almost completely displaced CD / DVDs. Many users are dissatisfied with the fact that the drive in their laptop occupies a place that could be removed under something more useful. Fortunately, there is a way to make it. Indeed, instead of an unnecessary drive, you can install an additional SSD drive to which you can transfer operating system, and on the usual HDD to store all your files. This approach is very practical and convenient. In this article, consider in detail how to install instead of a DVD in a laptop. Let's deal with. Go!

    Install SSD and HDD on a laptop is not so difficult, as it seems

    In online stores and regular stores where components for computers are sold, you can purchase a special SLIM DVD adapter that allows you to install a hard drive instead of an optical drive. It works as follows. An HDD of your computer is inserted into the adapter adapter, then the disk together with the adapter is mounted instead of a drive, and in place where the hard disk of the computer was installed in the place where the hard disk was installed, SSD is installed. Agree, it sounds quite simple. In fact, everything is not so difficult.

    Let's proceed. You need to start, of course, with the acquisition of an adapter adapter SLIM DVD. Adapters, as well as drives there are two types: 12.7 mm and 9.5 mm. Depending on what your drive, buy the appropriate adapter adapter, otherwise the railway simply will not be able to place on the site of the optical drive. If you have already bought it, you can go to the installation.

    First of all, you should remove the necessary components. It is not difficult to do it, because you do not have to disassemble the laptop completely, and you only remove some of its components. Immediately it is worth noting that if your computer is under warranty, then due to such modifications, the warranty will disappear. Despite the fact that the whole procedure is not very complicated, it should be treated with all seriousness and responsibility. Therefore, if you are not sure of your own, it is better to trust this work to the master.

    First remove the battery, but if you just don't remove it on your laptop, then turn it off from your motherboard to avoid possible problems and troubleshooting. You do not need to remove all the bottom. It is enough to unscrew a pair of screws to get HDD. The same story with an optical drive. On the Internet, you can easily find detailed information on the disassembly of each laptop model (since they all differ). Look at how to remove the drive and hard disk with specific model laptop. After you removed the corresponding covers, remove the HDD. To do this, you need to pull for a special tongue from silicone. Since the HDD is fixed on special clamses, they must be removed by twisting the corresponding screws.

    Now you need to install the drive in the adapter. As a rule, everything you need to install is available inside the box with an adapter, namely: screwdriver, screws, plug, strut and instruction. Please note that from the drive it is necessary to remove special attachments located on the sides, and fasten them to the adapter. Install the HDD in the adapter and insert in the SATA connector. Then mount the strut. The railway itself must still be fixed with the screw on the other side of the Slim DVD. To do this, you will need a fine dump, which comes in the kit. Then remove the mount on the other side of the optical drive and attach it to the adapter. Put the plug. Everything. Now you can insert the drive to the drive location.

    On the hard disk, which is also called the Winchester, with a volume of 250 GB, installed in my Samsung-R719 laptop due to the constant preservation of newly filtered photos, music and video began to miss the place. The question of choosing a new hard disk is more to replace it.

    Another question of selecting a new hard disk may occur if it is refusing due to the aging applied to the magnetic coating or electronic boards. Service centers repair hard drives are not engaged.

    HDD Hard Disk (Hard Disk Drive) or its modern analogue SSD Solid State Drive (SOLID STATE DRIVES) in a computer or laptop is designed to record, storing and reading information. Without a device for saving information, any computer product will not fully work.

    HDD selection for laptop

    For right choice The hard disk for a laptop first needs to decide on its main technical characteristics, such as:

    • Hard disk volume;
    • Information storage method (HDD or SSD);
    • Connector type (interface), with which the hard disk is connected to a laptop;
    • Form factor (geometrical dimensions).

    In terms of memory

    Currently, only hard drives with a volume of 500 GB have for storage of information data. This volume of the hard drive in the computer will be enough to install all the necessary software, storage of photos, music and your own video. If it is necessary to contain an archive from movies, then the Winchester of 1 TB and more will be required. For choosing hard The disk should be taken into account that not all motherboards support hard drives with a volume of more than 2 TB.

    Should not be surprised if set in computer hard A disc, for example, a volume of 1 TB, when checking, will have a capacity of 0.93 TB. The fact is that the computer processes information in a binary system in which 1 GB = 1024 MB, and manufacturers indicate the volume of the hard disk in the decimal system (which does not correspond to the truth), believing that 1 TB = 1000 GB. A kind of marketing technique that is misleading consumers. In addition, part of the hardware memory is used by the computer system for storing service information.

    By way of storing information

    Recently, the market has appeared and becomes popular type hard disk in which information is stored not on magnetic disks, but by microcircuits that are widely used in flash drives connected to USB port.. These are called solid-state drives and briefly indicate SSD (SOLID STATE DRIVES). Due to the absence of mechanical nodes, SSD solid-state drives have high performance and high reliability. But the cost of them more than twice the cost of traditional HDD. So the choice completely depends on the budget allocated to replace the hard disk.

    There is a third, combined type of hard disk for laptops. On the ordinary hard HDD board, the SSD memory microcircuits are additionally installed, in which the information is often stored as a computer system. This makes it possible to significantly increase the speed of the disk as a whole with a minor increase in its value.

    When buying a hard disk for a laptop with a limited budget, I recommend paying attention to the combined type of hard drive.

    By type laptop interface

    Find out the type of interface installed in laptop HDD. Can be in two ways - information and mechanical. With the information method, you need to go to the laptop control panel, then in the list of equipment and find out the model of the installed hard disk. By the number of the model on the Internet it is easy to find specifications from which you can find out all the parameters of the hard drive.

    The mechanical way is simpler, as it does not require searching and understanding the hard disk technical characteristics, it is sufficient to have only a screwdriver with a crusade. First you need to close all programs, turn off the laptop and fold it. Next, turning the laptop to put it in order not to scratch the cover on the soft surface. Usually on all removable laptop covers are inscribed that under them is hidden.

    Attention, before removing the hard disk, SSD, DVD, memory planks or any other device to eliminate the laptop in obligatory You must turn it off, turn off the power adapter from the network and remove the battery.

    Usually the battery in the laptop housing is fixed using two movable latches, which are displaced by the arrow on the laptop cover associated with them runners. Both runners must simultaneously move along the arrow on the lid and move the battery aside, as shown in the photo, and remove it.

    On the cover of the compartment in which the hard disk is installed, there is an HDD inscription, and under it an arrow as a triangle, showing which direction you need to move the lid to remove it after unscrewing the screws located on it.

    To dismember the hard disk connector, there is a tongue of thick plastic. You need to take on it and move the disk, as demonstrated in the photo, away from the connector.

    After selecting a hard disk from a laptop, it became apparent that the SATA sequential interface is used to connect the hard drive. Serial-ATA. The photo shows this type of connector, with which today in the overwhelming majority of laptops, regardless of the manufacturer, is connected to the hard disk.

    And so the SERIAL-ATA connector looks like a hard or SSD disk. Earlier in laptops for connecting hard disks, an IDE type connector was used.

    Connector IDE It is a lot of protruding from the base of two rows of pin-contacts, as in the photo, so it is easy to distinguish it from the SERIAL-ATA connector.

    Sata Revision Specification Speed Speed Characteristics

    To connect hard drives, SERIAL-ATA connectors are used in computers from one of three specifications.

    SATA connectors for all specifications are interchangeable. For example, SSD solid-state disk with SATA 3.0 connector can be installed in a laptop in which SATA 1.0 connector. In this case, the maximum information transfer rate will be limited to the capabilities of the SATA 1.0 connector data.

    The connector specification determines only its capabilities, and real speed Recording-readings is determined by the technical characteristics of the hard disk installed in the laptop. For example, modern one of best hard Seagate discs with a capacity of 3 TB has the maximum reading speed of a large amount of information only 150 MB / s, and small files are only 1 MB / s. Thus, any hard disk will provide maximum data exchange rate regardless of the specification. sATA interface Computer.

    Another thing is if the computer is installed solid State SSD.. In some models, the read-write speed is up to 550 MB / second. To implement such a speed, you will need an interface only SATA Revision 3.0 specifications.

    Definition of hard disk form factor

    The form factor defines the standard geometric dimensions of the hard disk. In laptops, you can meet the hard drives of the form factor 2.5 "(width 69.9 mm) with a thickness of the housing 7, 9.5 or 15 mm. As a rule, manufacturers in laptops Install hard disks of the form factor 2.5 "with a thickness of 9.5 mm.

    Hard disk form factor can be obtained from the technical characteristics of the model or measure the thickness of the disk by any flat line or caliper.

    Additional technical characteristics
    SSD discs

    To properly select a new hard disk, it is enough to consider its technical characteristics listed above. When you select to replace the solid-state SSD disc, you must additionally pay attention to the type of memory chip, based on the solid-state disk, as the resource of its operation depends on it.

    SSD memory microcircuits

    In SSD discs, manufacturers install a memory chip of one of three types:

    • TLC is the cheapest memory type with a resource overwriting at least 1000 cycles;
    • MLC - optimal view memory for a home computer with a resource of rewriting at least 3,000 cycles;
    • 3D NAND is the most expensive and fast memory with a resource overwriting more than 10,000 cycles.

    At first glance, it seems that the 3000 cycles of rewriting to the disk are not enough, but if you make a calculation, then for the SSD of a 240 GB disk of this memory resource is enough for decades of intensive operation.

    For example, in my computer installed SSD disc 240 GB. On a laptop, I work daily and additionally on it is recorded around the clock with three high-resolution street video surveillance camcorders.

    Calculate the real resource for overwriting a SSD disc: - 240 GB × 3000 cycles = 720,000 GB = 720 TB. For a day, no more than 30 GB of video and other information is written, it turns out less than 10.8 TB for the year. We divide the disk resource on the annual scope: 720 / 10.8 = 66 years old.

    Calculations have shown that a solid-state SSD disk collected from the chip of any type of memory in home computer Previously, it becomes morally morally than it will work out its resource.

    How to transfer the system and files
    In a laptop from an old hard disk to a new

    Deciding with the main technical parameters of the hard disk, which guarantee the possibility of its installation in the laptop, you can start it with its choice and acquisition.

    New hard drives are not installed windows system and after connecting it to the laptop it will be necessary to install Windows all softwarenecessary for work. This is a rather laborious process, as it requires care, patience and a lot of time.

    The task can be simplified using special programs For cloning hard drives, for example, Paragon Drive Copy. The program supports the Russian language and any laptop user will figure it out with it.

    In order to use Paragon Drive Copy, it must be installed on old hard disk, connect new Disc To laptop, run the cloning program and wait until all information is copied. Then the new disk is installed in the laptop and you can immediately work on it, as if the hard disk did not change.

    How to install a second hard drive in a laptop

    To transfer the system and files (cloning) from the old disk, you need to connect two hard disk simultaneously to the laptop, which is not provided by its design. For solving this task, two ways are available:

    • Use a special adapter container in the form of an external box;
    • Install instead of a DVD drive adapter container, which will allow you to supplement the laptop with a second hard disk.

    Both options are equivalent and it all depends on the further plans to use the old hard disk. If you are planning a removed hard disk to use as a USB flash drive for storing and transferring a large amount of information, you should purchase an external adapter container. And if the hard disk is required to expand the total volume to store information on a laptop, then it will be necessary instead of a regular drive DVD to install the adapter container.

    I had to take advantage of both options. A few years ago, when it took to increase the volume of the hard disk, and the DVD drive was still in demand, I had to buy an external USB adapter container in the form of a remote box. And the second time, when it wanted to increase the performance of a laptop and increasing the amount of information to replace the mechanical hard disk on the SSD disk. DVD The drive was no longer needed and a container adapter for a second hard disk was installed in a laptop instead.

    Using a USB adapter container

    The market presents a large range of adapter containers in the form of an external boxing, which are designed to connect a hard disk to a laptop through its external USB interface.

    When choosing the main thing so that the form factor and the internal adapter interface corresponded to the form factor and the hard disk interface. Adapters are found, with which the hard disk is connected directly to the laptop connector. They cost less, but in operation are uncomfortable since, by chance, the axes, such an adapter is easy to break.

    The hard disk adapter container is a plastic or metal box with an external mini-USB connector and an indicator LED. The adapter container is connected to a computer using a standard flex cord with connectors at the ends of mini-USB and USB.

    Since the hard disks of the 2.5 inches form factor consume a small current, then the power provided by the laptop USB bus is quite enough and the additional power source is not required.

    To install the hard disk in the adapter container, you must remove the cover from it, place the hard disk in it and take it on the interface connector. After that, close the lid and use the standard USB cord to connect the adapter container to the computer. Now additional hard drive will work as familiar to all USB flash drive. Through the use of the adapter container, it will be possible to quickly connect the hard drive to any laptop or stationary computer.

    Instead of DVD drive

    To date DVD discs They lost their relevance, and installed in laptops optical DVD drives only collect dust. To expand the technical capabilities of laptops, the industry has mastered the production of special adapters that allow instead of a useless DVD drive to install the second hard disk in the laptop.

    Form factor and interface connector in all DVD drives installed in laptops are the same, and they are 9.5 mm and 12.7 mm thick. Therefore, before purchasing the adapter, you should find out the thickness of the drive installed in your DVD laptop.

    Determine the dimensions of the DVD drive in two ways. Enter the Computer Device Manager and using the drive model on the Internet to find its specifications. But it is more expedient to remove the drive from the laptop and measure its thickness, since at the same time it will be possible to study how the drive is arranged, and figure out how it is extracted.

    To remove the DVD, the drive from the laptop housing must be unscrewed using a crust screwdriver only one screw, which is located on the side of the bottom cover of the laptop in the area of the drive area. Usually, next to this screw, there is an ODD inscription and an arrow pointing to the screw head. After that, the drive is easily removed.

    Since the thickness of the adapter for hard disks is significantly different, it is easy to define it on the eye, but not to be mistaken, it is better to measure any ruler or caliper. Measurement using caliper dVD size SAMSUNG-R719 installed in my laptop showed that its thickness is 12.7 mm.

    Where you can buy an adapter for replacing a DVD drive

    After determining the DVD form factor, the laptop installed in the compartment can be purchased by the adapter. In computer and digital technology stores, there is a large selection of Chinese hard drive adapters for installation instead of a DVD drive cost in the $ 15 area.

    Exactly such adapters made in China can be purchased in Aliexpress online store at a price of $ 4, the truth will have to wait for delivery from the month to two.

    My choice fell on an aluminum alloy adapter, since the hard disk is heated during operation, and the metal better takes heat. The method of fixing the hard disk in the adapter was chosen screw, like more reliable. 40 days after payment of the order, the adapter was received by mail. When opening up the soft packaging and attentive inspection of defects was not found. In the premise there was still a small cross screwdriver.

    Replacing DVD Drive Adapter with Hard Disk

    Before installing a hard disk into the adapter, you need to perform preparatory work, which are to transfer a corner with a threaded hole and front panel with a drive DVD to a purchased adapter.

    A corner with a threaded bucks for fixing the DVD drive in the laptop housing is located next to its interface connector and is fixed with two screws. There was no corner on the adapter, but there were two holes with threads in the desired place.

    Therefore, there was a corner to remove the drive from the DVD and observing the orientation to fix on the adapter using the stewed screws.

    The decorative plastic panel installed on the purchased adapter (in the photo of the lower) in the form and size differed from the panel installed on the DVD drive of the laptop. Therefore, so that there are no big gaps and did not break the appearance of the laptop I had to remove the panel from the drive DVD housing and install it on the adapter body for the hard disk.

    The photo shows a laptop in which the adapter is installed with the front panel that the manufacturer has installed. As you can see, the look of the laptop does not please the eye.

    Change panel non-cost taskIf you know where the latches are located and how to press them. It is better to remove the panel from the adapter, as it will no longer need and if the latches will accidentally break, it will not lead to undesirable consequences.

    In a DVD drive, removed from a laptop, a retractable tray for installing the disks on which the front panel is mounted, dried up, and it is impossible to get to the latch in such position. But for its extension, a small hole is provided on the panel, which is enough for a couple of centimeters, pressing a metal rod, such as a needle or straightened stationery clip.

    The decorative front panel on the drive DVD tray is fixed using two latches. One latch shown in the photo is on the edge of the right side of the panel. For the release of the latch, it is enough for a screwdriver blade to prescribe into it in the excavation provided for this.

    The second latch is on the opposite side of the panel and removed slightly from her end. It is exempt from engagement in the same way.

    The front panel from the adapter is removed similarly. After its removal, you need to install the removed front panel with the drive DVD to the adapter and you can install a hard disk.

    After installing the hard disk, it must be fixed in the adapter, who clues the four screws that are already partially screwed into the adapter body. Screws need to screw in such a way that they do not perform, otherwise it will be impossible to insert the adapter in the laptop compartment.

    In this model of the adapter for the hard disk to the left of SATA there is a switch to adapt hard drives different manufacturers:

    • A: FOR HP / CONY;
    • B: FOR DELL / IBM;
    • C: FOR OTHER BRAND.

    A seagate hard disk was installed, which was not in the list, so at random the switch engine was set to position.

    The hard disk adapter is prepared for installation instead of a DVD drive, and it is time to paste it into the laptop compartment.

    The adapter without effort fully entered the laptop compartment, and the front panel merged with the housing, just like the front panel of a previously stood DVD drive. It remains only to fix the adapter, tightening one screw at the bottom of the laptop and you can check the operation of the hard disk.

    After installing the battery, the computer is turned on the Windows system identified the adapter, installed the driver, and the sections of an additional hard disk have become available for operation. When writing and reading from a second hard disk on the adapter panel, the blue LED murmured, and in sleep mode, the shine constantly.

    Thanks to the installation of an adapter laptop for a hard disk, instead of a useless DVD drive, it is possible to store up to 1.1 TB of information. In addition, thanks to the placement of system windows files And the storage of frequently used information on the SSD disk, the acoustic noise, which earlier radiated the hard drive, disappeared, and the laptop Sal work almost silently.

    Why do you need to install a hard drive instead of a drive in a laptop? Increasingly, a solid-state drive is used as the main storage device. Installing the SSD in the laptop makes the download and operation of the system faster. However, such devices tend to have modest volumes - keep hundreds of gigabytes of films, games and the other important information It becomes nowhere.

    With a desktop computer, everything is simple - you can put at least some additional drives. There is no free space in the laptop. However, it is possible to remove the drive that is becoming more useless, and install an SSD or HDD () in the laptop instead of a DVD drive. Connect the hard drive to direct will not work - in laptops, different connectors are used in drives and drives. Adapters with DVDs on the HDD-SATA come to the rescue (you can find adapters and on HDD-IDE, but they are only suitable for old laptops).

    Now we will analyze how to put a second hard disk in a laptop using an adapter?

    There is no difference, which type of disk is installed in the optical drive of the laptop - and HDD instead of DVD, and SSD - will be connected the same. It should be borne in mind that manufacturers of computers such a modification is not provided - official adapters does not exist, only chinese models (for example, optimal). However, due to a very simple device, the adapter is not worried about his quality. But all the responsibility for possible malfunctions, the user takes on itself - he will lose guarantees on a laptop.

    Before connecting an additional SSD to a laptop or install HDD in the drive compartment DVD laptop, It is necessary to ensure security: disable the battery, as well as ground - touch, for example, to the battery, to remove static voltage, which can destroy the components of the computer's motherboard.

    Select adapter

    Many manufacturers are engaged in manufacturing Salace to HDD for laptops. There is no significant difference between them - you only need to choose the suitable HDD adapter. In a laptop, one of two types of drives can be installed:

    • 12.7 mm height - in old models;
    • 9.5 mm - in modern ultra-thin computers.

    It is not scary if the thin adapter is used for a high compartment laptop - the installation will pass without problems. But it is better to choose a suitable adapter to replace the CD drive on SSD in a laptop did not cause difficulties. In addition, it is worth buying a salazzo with special brackets that they cling to the outer part of the computer case, extract the device if necessary it will be easier.

    Discover and HDD

    Creating a laptop with two hard drives is possible in any case, the differences will be only as the computer case is disassembered. Models of different manufacturers may have their own characteristics, but the overall procedure of action is:

    1. The battery is disconnected. If it is fixed, the battery connector is disconnected from the motherboard.
    2. On the lower surface of the housing, screws that hold the drive are unscrewed.
    3. DVD-drive is extracted.
    4. The lid closes the basic details of the laptop is removed. If a separate compartment is provided for the drive, as on computers Sony, I do not need to fully disassemble the case.
    5. HDD is extracted from the device.

    If the second hard disk is installed in the laptop without replacing the old HDD, it is not necessary to disable it.

    Unlike a desktop computer, wires and plugs do not need to be disconnected by hand. They are rigidly fixed and disable themselves when the devices are removed, so there should be no problems.

    Connecting hard disk to adapter

    1. A solid-state disk is installed in place of the old HDD, and the removed hard drive connects to the adapter;
    2. SSD drives are installed in both compartments;
    3. Using Salazok, the drive is replaced by SSD or any other hard drive, the old drive remains in its place.

    In any case, you need to install the operating system on a speedy drive - either SSD instead of a DVD or a disk installed in the main place. This is due to the fact that the SATA cable intended for a DVD drive is 4 times slower than the cable connecting the drive with motherboard. Therefore, with HDD installed instead of a drive, the system will boot much longer and in general the laptop will work slower. SSD speed compensates for this difference.

    DVD replacement on the hard disk is as follows:

    1. The disc is disconnected from native sleds to which it is screwed with 4 screws;
    2. Winchester is invested in the OPTIBAY adapter, it is connected to connectors. From the opposite side, plastic strut is invested, which is included with the adapter;
    3. From the bottom side of the salad, screws are tightened, holding the drive in place;
    4. From the native drive removed fasteners and are screwed to the adapter;
    5. On the outside of the adapter put the plug;
    6. The device is inserted into the laptop drive compartment;
    7. After that, it remains to insert SSD in a sled from the old hard disk, spin their screws and install the device in your place. Next, the computer housing is collected in reverse order

    Problems with the definition of the second disk laptop

    In some cases, the BIOS does not see the second hard drive. It's not a problem. This is connected with the features of the BIOS itself. Loading the system will be held in normal mode. If SSD is delivered instead of the drive and you want to install the system on it, the program will normally determine the disk.

    If the existing OS does not see the second disk, the reason may be the absence of formatting. If you go to the system utility "Disk Management", the new hard drive is determined. Need to format it in file System NTFS and it will appear in the conductor.

    Thus, even an inexperienced user can replace the DVD-drive on SSD, since to install the second hard disk on the laptop is very simple. The main thing is to choose the correct adapter and not lose the screws when disassembling a computer. Below, you can watch the video by hard installation disk instead of a DVD drive in a laptop and mabuke.
